*“Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. “Mankind.” That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it’s fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom… Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!”*

The prophet of regrets fleet was actually on a expeditionary mission in search of more sacred and holy artifacts that’s why the fleet was so small, and during his investigation his recovery teams had stumbled upon a forerunner luminary which his stewards then brought to his attention and upon accessing it, discovered a map of star systems and installations of great significance one of which was the ark, which was then shown to be only accessible by a portal located on a planet called “erde tyre” but what he didn’t know was that it was in fact earth humanities last stronghold which is why he so hastily went to the planet believing it to be an abandoned forerunner world.

    Solid overview. Good job.
    A few points:
The Musashi was a carrier of unknown class. The Basra was of an unknown class although interpreting it as a Supercarrier may not be out of line as it was described as one of the UNSC's finest ships in Operation: First Strike.
The UNSC Fleet was much larger than the 5th Fleet alone, and included at least one more Marathon and 7 Frigates on Mars (Sol Defense Group 3A/5), multiple destroyers and one Marathon assigned to Battlegroup Omicron, multiple carriers including the UNSC Stalingrad (which as part of Battlegroup Omicron were diverted to Onyx) and UNSC Totem Lake, as well as a Valiant-Class Heavy Cruiser, the UNSC Chevaliers. There were also dozens of other small groups of frigates and corvettes. And we know there were far more, the Third Fleet is implied to have been rather large (large for a UNSC fleet being in the dozens), as the Totem Lake was only one ship in Battlegroup Rhino, and upon its destruction there was a request for the entire Third Fleet to be sent to destroy the Covenant ship. We also know the Second, Seventh, and Sixteenth Fleets were engaged in skirmishing around the planet, and likely included dozens of ships.
It should be noted that the fleet seen at the beginning of Halo 3 was the remains of the fleet Truth sent to Earth. There were many more ships that were sent, than what we see in the game. It's likely the Fleet Truth sent numbered in the hundreds. For example we know there were multiple CPV-Class Destroyers around Earth at the time of the Battle of Onyx.
The Athens, Malta, and Cairo weren't actually positioned above Athens, Malta, and Cairo on your map, which annoys my OCD. :P

The fleet been so small is the result of the actions of Blue team and Admiral Whitcome at the Unyielding Hierophant, were roughly 500 other ships were destroyed by a detonation of the stations reactors (he also blew up a huge fleet kindof by accident elsewere with a NOVA bomb). This was the fleet that Regret was originally supposed to be bringing with him to Earth, what he arrives with at the start of Halo 2 is basically his personal escort as one of the high prophets, not an actual battlefleet. He also didn't know Earth was fortifiied human world (its unclear if he knew it was a human world at all), so him walking into the defences was him just been idiotic and a religious nut job, he was the only 1 of the 3 high prophets who was actually a fanatic to the cause of the great journey, the other 2 were in it for the power alone.

Truth did indeed sent a giant final assault fleet to Earth. That was the one that he brought with the Forerunner dreadnought at the end of Halo 2. But earlier, in the days leading up to his arrival to Earth, multiple waves of large Covenant fleets came to Earth(after Truth's first support armada came after Regret's escape). I'd say that up to several thousand ships could have taken part in the Battle for Earth, all of which were presumably lost.

Playing as the Chief, it is so easy to forget how outmatched the UNSC really was. The Covenant nailed Reach and Earth within weeks of each other with relatively little effort compared to what the UNSC was putting into defense. Some of the missions in Halo Reach (New Alexandria, specifically) demonstrated that quite clearly.
Really, by Halo 3, the war was over. It was a case of stopping the Covenant from activating the rings. Not preserving the UNSC or saving colonies and I doubt they could have even done that had the Elites not helped out because they were the ones that took out the rest of Truth's fleet AND stopped the Flood AND provided the necessary support to reach the control room.
It was blind luck that Covenant fractured when it did, which is the only thing that spared humanity from extinction.
Now we have bullshit like the Infinity which can literally ram through Covenant capital ships like they are nothing, and that only 4 in-universe years after the UNSC had to basically start from scratch to rebuild its military power and industrial infrastructure.
    I miss Bungie-era Halo.

To be fair, having easy access to Forerunner sites probably made everything easier to accomplish. Also, fairly sure that the Covenant ran into Earth without knowing it is the homeworld and capital of Humanity as opposed to the site of a Forerunner artefact (the gate to the Ark). My knowledge of the lore though may be mistaken.

    • @FrozenPhoenix15
      @FrozenPhoenix15 5 років тому +53

Exactly. The best Halo stories are born out of Humanity’s desperation during the war. The Keyes Loop, Battle of Sigma Octanus IV, Battle of Reach, capturing a Covenant flagship with a Pelican, a Longsword, and a squad of Marines, The Second Battle of Reach, the Raid on Unyielding Hierophant, Operations Prometheus and Torpedo, the entire Spartan-III program, capturing a Destroyer with a squad of Spartans while destroying its companion simultaneously, the battles for Onyx.
The UNSC was outnumbered and outgunned every step of the way, so they had to actually _think_ their way out of tough situations. Now it’s just: “Throw some Forerunner tech at it. Oh, didn’t work? *Throw **_more_** Forerunner tech at it!”* Where’s the tension?

4:05 This one. The reason there was such a small fleet was because all the Covenant really knew for sure was that there was a Forerunner artifact on Earth (the keyship) - they knew it was a human world but didn't anticipate it being the homeworld, just a colony. It didn't make sense tactically for them to send a massive fleet to what they probably would have expected to be a small colony, as well as their primary objective not being that of combat, just infiltration and retrieval.

A superb video. Absolutely bloody superb. The Battle of Earth was, in many respects, the last stand of humanity. The Battle of Reach was the Covenant’s final decisive hammer blow, shattering the UNSC’s military capacity, leaving Earth as a heavily fortified but only moderately defended world. The UNSC Home Fleet was only a fraction as strong as the fleet at Reach had been, while the UNSC’s only proven assets capable of matching the Covenant evenly were also lost at Reach, most notably almost the entire Spartan corps and the NOVA superweapon project. There was no hope whatsoever for humanity when the Covenant arrived at Earth. It would just be a futile, desperate last stand against overwhelming odds.
Of course, as the Templin Institute mentions in this video, other events evened the strategic situation. The Covenant sustained immense losses during the Battle of Reach, from hundreds upon hundreds of warships to a valuable supercarrier to millions of ground troops. Another fleet of dozens of ships were lost during the Halo Campaign. and then another five hundred warships were lost during Operation FIRST STRIKE, including the irreplacable mobile station known as Unyielding Heirophant. Between the detonation of the NOVA superweapon and the losses at Onyx, another hundred Covenant warships were lost, including a major economic and industrial world. Dozens more warships were lost in the attack against Earth, while the beginning of the civil war at High Charity over Delta Halo resulted in the loss of hundreds and hundreds of warships, millions of citizens and High Charity itself, the seat of Covenant political and religious power.
The end result left the Covenant’s once mighty war machine a broken shell of its former glory. As a result, despite the loss or retreat of most of the surviving UNSC Home Fleet, the UNSC was able to hold onto most of Earth. Most the Orbital Defence Platforms survived to keep most of Earth’s orbit secure, limiting Covenant warships a corridor above Africa, and so when the end of the war finally came, humanity was able to reclaim its homeworld.

The covenant lost only a bit over 100 ships at reach, most of them from the initial assault but over time more and more ships arrived that pretty much gave Reach no hope. Only 6 ships were lost in Halo 1, and at most 13 in Halo 2 (atleast 2 ships on regrets fleet survived, possible more). The First Strike fleet of 500 ships was Truths secret fleet that noone else in the covenant knew about, and he considered its loss a small setback.
All of the losses after Halo 2 were massive to them since the civil war is what caused the majority of their losses, but the covenant empire as a whole had practically no shortage of ships to toss against the UNSC

I believe the covenant lost 2 CSO Super carriers near the end of the war, one at Reach and another during First Strike and IIRC it was theorized that the covenant only had up to 5 of the behemoth carriers. That would’ve dealt a minor blow to their morale No ?...

The new Halo novel with Chief and the ODSTs takes place at the beginning of the war. Soon after the events at Harvest. Blue team and other spartan teams took command of an elite ODST unit from the Navy's Prowler core. They managed to set off a series of portable nukes in some kind of Covenant shipyard or supply station. This station happened to have a CSO class supercarrier under construction. The station and the carrier were destroyed. That makes at least two CSOs destroyed that I know of. Reach and the station. Not to mention the massive force of 500 ships and station lost at Reach.

While Truth thought the 500 ships lost at the Unyielding Hierophant "a minor setback", he had delusions of grandeur and was somewhat disconnected from reality. If all those ships lost, including those at Sigma Octanus and battle of Psi Serpentis, had no significance to the Covenant, why would they escort a Prophet - A prophet - by 2552 to a world that was known to have at least some Human settlement, with just 15 ships? Why not send 1000 ships with a Prophet? The Covenant was understrength too at the end, partly due to the rising tensions between elites and brutes, but certainly also due to losses in the war. Or why just 750 ships in total to the Battle of Reach, the greatest battle of the war. The Covenant were going to full scale war with Humanity at Reach, and they brought 750 ships. That was what they were able to commit. IMO its pretty clear the Covenant did not command as many ships as some think (not to begin with either). A couple of thousands, but hardly more than that.

There is nothing more dangerous than a desperate man, and the UNSC, is a group of very desperate men.
The UNSC's defense of Earth, according to lore, was even more stubborn and fierce than the defense of Reach. They had a few hundred ships, but only one battleship, 5 carriers (no super carriers), several dozen cruisers, and a multitude of frigates and destroyers totaling to about 200 to 300 ships in orbit during the initial invasion. Several battle groups were recalled during the attack, bringing the total up to a little less than 400 (maximum 388) but the most that ever fought at the same time was under 300. by the time the battle finished, less than 200 vessels remained, and most of them severely damaged. Also, much of the polar and eastern Eurasian MAC battle clusters remained intact. The rest were eventually wiped out, especially the african clusters. There were remnants of clusters over the North and south american continents, but not alot. The covenant took massive and highly disproportionate casualties on Earth.

I never agreed with that small amount of ships for the home fleet. We know carriers were part of the home fleet because they would later depart with Battlegroup Stalingrad to Onyx. So I believe that number was just a detachment or wing of the much larger fleet. After all even though the UNSC was severely under strengthened they still managed to wipe out most of the High charity defense fleet that departed with truth (a fleet that was made up of high hundreds to low thousands of ships)

The high charity defense fleet was mostly destroyed or scattered by this time. When the schism happened, the fleet started destroying itself with brute and elite captained ship going into all out war. A month after this fighting, Truth arrived at earth with only a portion of the remaining brute fleet, with the rest still fighting at high charity for another month until they eventually scattered.
Earth never saw that many covenant ships, the majority of them were fighting in the civil war

    • @bluenight104
      @bluenight104 5 років тому +2

MooMoink We don’t know how many destroyed themselves in the civil war and how many followed Truth to Earth. What we do know is that Truth ordered those ships loyal to him to follow, at which point most of the fighting around Delta Halo stopped. We also know most of the elites created a quarantine zone around Delta and tried to stop the high-charity infection, both of which ultimately failed. They then disengaged and regrouped after that operation. We also know that from October 21st (end of Halo 3: ODST) to November 8th (Truth arrives in Sol) constant covenant reinforcements came to Earth and continued to contest UNSC space assets while excavating the New Mombasa artifact. Finally we know that because of the destruction Battlegroup omicron (wrongly labeled battlegroup Stalingrad) the UNSC had at least 1 (The UNSC Stalingrad) carrier in system and probably more.

Mik Moen IIRC After Reach fell Lord Hood against the recommendation of Fleet Com ordered the return of ALL remaining battle groups from every remaining colony to fall back to Earth. This meant that for a approximately 1 month hundreds of ships fell back to Earth, strengthening her already formidable defences. During the battle above earth which took place over 3 months, the U.N.S.C. would receive a constant stream of reinforcements from all over the inner colonies and the battle for the Sol System would take place throughout all of her major colonies not limited to Earth and Mars. As battlegroups of various sizes dropped out of slipspace they would immediately be called into action and deployed at any one of the planets in the system until only a few ships remained.

In the first cutscene of Cairo Station in Halo 2 you can see the exact numbers of 8 cruisers and 67 frigates on a screen when Lord Hood tells Admiral Harper to pull back.

I'd love to see the Siege of Terra or some other great battle from the Warhammer 40k, like the Battle of Macragge.
    Love your works!

Definitely a good video, loved the somber music playing at the beginning to set the tone of the video. Even though I am well read up on the halo lore I still love watching your videos as they give a professional view to the battles and factions.

The Covenant forces really faced spirited resistance. Many civilians together with the UNSC army personnel literally fought to the last man. On the other hand, morale and fighting qualities of the Covenant army were generally very low, and many of them would simply surrender to UNSC forces. This is especially true of the Grunt contingent.
The battles between the Covenant and UNSC on Earth were largely attrition-style tug of war. It was the special operations led by Master Chief and Arbiter that turned the tide. They gave the army precious time to re-organize and counterattack.

There's a comment war going on between some lore fans and it's funny as fuck to read. If you see a comment with the name, "JACCO20082012" the replies under that user's comment is funny as hell, it's practically the Human-Covenant War in text form.

A great game concept would be to play as regular human soldiers on earth while the Covenant invaded earth. More like H3 ODST but different locations around Earth etc

I love your videos on all things Halo! You should explore the UEG/UNSC human colonies size, locations and the like!
