Fun Fact: The reason the covenant fleet that destroyed Reach was so massive. Was because the covenant hierarchy mistook Reach for the Human Homeworld, due to its resources and enormous military presence on the planet.
Funny. Something similar happened in Mass Effect during the First contact war. The Turians thought the fleet they attacked was the bulk of Humanityd forces. Only to be cauget off guard by reinforcements
Not when your lying hierarchies are trying to hide the fact that humanity is the race that's to claim the mantle of responsibility by word of the Forerunners, the race they worship as gods, and are the only race that's still alive that can easily access Forerunner technology without taking years upon years of reverse engineering.
I too still get chills from it. If you read the books, you knew how it would end, that did not diminish the story one bit. The game was a good example of a tragedy.
"It didn't take long for Reach to fall: our enemy was ruthless. Efficient. But they weren't nearly fast enough. For you had already passed the torch. And because of you, we found Halo, unlocked its secrets, shattered our enemy's resolve. Our victory - your victory - was so close, I wish you could have lived to see it. But you belong to Reach. Your body, your armor - all burned and turned to glass. Everything… except your courage. That, you gave to us. And with it, we can rebuild."
I'd like to think that the Fall of Reach had the same effect on Humanity as the Fall of Cadia. A Fortress world besieged by overwhelming forces whose own defenders fought on even as the world's surface was engulfed in fire and death. It awoken the essence of mankind. The primal desire to live. And every battle following the Fall showed just that. From the lowly civilian factory worker who picked up arms alongside marines on Earth, to the lowly ODSTs who jumped feet first onto hell on every Forerunner instillation they came across, to the ships and fleets of the UNSC Navy who even outnumbered, fought on to the last man. And in the end, the Covenant's own victory, became their downfall. Remember Reach.
Sorry to ruin it but... not really. Reach didn't awaken any primal desire to live that wasn't there. It was a big loss and all but... Reach didn't have like this, oh now we are awake and want to live.
It was worse. UNSC had nothing but normal humans with the enough spite in them to die taking as much covies with them as possible... Cadia was a battle.. Reach signified the End of the War.
The fall of Cadia struck deep through the Psyche of Humanity and awoke a hunger that could only be satisfied through blood, the call for Vengeance for her people shall ring out for Millenia

Reach.... the narration and music really do paint how somber the fall of reach was for the UNSC. Good job. As for losses... the UNSC was outnumbered at least 2 to 1 in the fight but managed to inflict disproportionately heavy losses on the covenant from their stubborn and ferocious defense. Even local militias and civilians armed themselves and joined the defense efforts. Including all reinforcements that arrived, the UNSC navy lost at least 352 warships at Reach alone (which their dwindling navy probably numbered 1000 warships or less) plus an unknown amount of civilian vessels and other non-combat star ships. Many of those ships, were by now either hard to replace like cruisers, or impossible to replace like the punic class super carriers. Human military and civilian losses were well over 4 billion (somewhere close to 4.5 billion). In addition, almost all the remaining SPARTAN super soldiers died here. The fighting lasted just over two months from start to finish. Just shows how heavy the fighting was. That means the average amount of deaths per day was around sixty-two million five hundred thousand. The covenant come in waves so exact numbers are unknown, but the largest wave had over 300 warships alone. That was the main force led by to-be arbiter, Thel Vadamee. The covenant sent the largest recorded fleet in the human covenant war aside from High Charity's escort fleet, and their best and bravest troops to Reach because they thought it was the human homeworld because of the military presence and infrastructure.
A High Command episode about the Battle of Reach would be cool. Although between The Fall of Reach and Halo Reach there is a lot of conflicting information, apparently Halsey’s Journal smooths out those inconsistencies but I’ve never been able to obtain one of those.
The Marines and Spartans aren't mindless humans that are only a step up from being drones. And the planet didn't break, as the video said, life could still be found on the planet after glassing.

Well there points during the game where possible time skips could occur. The first was after noble three and noble six went on that recon mission together. Then they took time to plan an all out assault on the the covenant ground troops and who knows how long that took. Then when they went to sword base, they rested a bit there to recount their losses to doctor halsey and take a mission from her. Then that time he went up into space. They lander at the spaceport before being sent to the corvette to destroy it. Took some time there so they could establish Communcation with the savannah who were sacrificing their slip stream drive for the honor of destroying the covenant corvette. Then when noble six woke up on alexandria. Who knows how long he was sleeping. They made it seem like he woke up immediately after hitting the ground, but I bet he lost some time unconscious. Last but not least was the final mission. They took time to plan that before hatching it. So yea, the fall of reach didnt happen in a day.

Halo 5 player: Let me guess... Your home? Noble 6: It was. And it was beautiful. Reach was like most games. Too many players to go around and bungie is gone but then 343 industries offered a solution, Halo 4.
@@dr.catherineelizabethhalse1820 The only games that could afford that title are 2 and 3, and even then Reach is nowhere near a bad game, only the book purists hate it
The Fall of Reach is one of the most important parts of the Halo lore in regards to the Human/Covenant War; losing such a strategically vital woirld like that in just over a month is devastating defeat. Especially when you account all the effort the UNSC put into defending it, it wasn't enough to do anything but delay the inevitable. Halo: Reach really did a good job at balancing the feel of an empowering shooter, while making you feel the effects of a hopeless situation, as the covenant pull out one trump card after another, as your teammates fall in combat one by one, right down to fighting alone in a classic spartanic last stand.
Fun fact: alot of people still survive on Reach after the covenant left. Just look at halo 5 😅. Another little bit of information. When the covenant found/ attacked, Reach. Reach defensives were already starch thin by that point. Most were either moved to other worlds or destroyed in defending other areas. That only a hand full of ships remain as Reach defenses. 20 ODP with only like 2 dozen (mostly) small ships left fornthe planetary defense.
To say that as a halo fan I still put time in this glorious game. To use a quote from another chariter in the trailer from this game. From the beginning. You know how this ends. Shows the whole glorious game trailer and ends with the still feared elites with the classic energy sword liting up to reveile his face angry. To say I'm a halo fan for life is an understatement. Remember reach.

Reach was like Cadia but the guard broke before the planet did
The planet was turned to molten rock from orbit before the guard broke.
@@tuscan9617 cadia yes, reach the marines abd Spartans fell on mere days
The Marines and Spartans aren't mindless humans that are only a step up from being drones. And the planet didn't break, as the video said, life could still be found on the planet after glassing.
@@argokarrus2731 Spartan, and Marines, didn't broke just days later. Most were still fighting even after the planet was glassed.
@AntiSkillShot the planet wasn't glassed at all, that's also mentioned in the video btw.
“Our victory, your victory was so close, i wish you couldve lived to see it but you belong to reach, your body and armour all burned and turned to glass, except your courage, that you gave to us.”
Hey, you should one day make Latveria or Madripoor for Atlas. I miss more comic book related content aside from Gotham.
I like your recommendations. What do you think of an Atlas episode on Eureka from the show of the same name.
@@louisduarte8763 They are thinking about making a Wakanda episode. But the movie one. Not the comic one.
Some suggestions for future Atlas vids:-
Death Star (Star Wars)
Deep Space 9 (Star Trek)
Sera (Gears of War)
Midgar (Final Fantasy VII)
Cybertron (Transformers)
Hogwarts (Harry Potter)
Outworld (Mortal Kombat)
Yes to all of these.
Thank you guys for covering Reach. Halo will always hold a special place in my heart, especially Halo 3 ODST and Reach. I know there are a lot of topics and places you have yet to cover, but I do want to suggest going over the UN Spacy from Macross. Preferably the original version, and not the bastardization that is Robotech. Thank you, and I look forward to a new year of content from the Institute.
you guys really are just incredible content creators and i gotta say this fosters so much good spirit amongst the communities of these franchises. thanks for the videos :D
Welp, now you have to do the various Shield Worlds!
They count as locations, so get to it! :D
These were the days... We were prepared to fall in 2010. Our last stand not in vein... Remember Reach
The new founding fathers: the purge
The arachnids: star ship troopers
Devil man: devil man
Dante :devil may cry
I was hoping to hear more about the ancient artifacts Reach possessed but this is still a good investigation. Keep up the great work, Templin Institute!
The covenant had to kill all the inhabitants of Reach to prevent Cadia: The prequel
The planet broke before the guard did!
Wait..........
NPC D77798 you could argue the same. The Spartans never stopped fighting for their “home”
Fermion: Gamma station, this is Fermion RSO. Unconfirmed report of an in-system slipspace rupture.
Gamma Station: Impossible. Check your source.
Fermion: Reading multiple pings below the orbital defense grid...
Gamma Station: Oh, this can't be happening.
Gamma Station: There's no mistake. It's them.
Remember people
Fall of Reach: Reach fell in one day
Bungies retcon: about 4 months
Neat
This is why I like the Halo universe. Because of stories, and story tellers like the Templin Institute.

1: Hoo-rah to the lore of Halo and Halo: Reach which made me so engrossed to it
2: your narration is beautiful! cant get enough of it!
3: Reach will be rebuilt and it’ll be even greater, Remember Reach and the fallen defending her
REACH STANDS!
The Planet broke before the marines did!
I think your narration for this video is so fitting because I'm used to (and I'm sure most of the Halo Community) Cortana narrating things and talking in the Halo Universe
Halo Reach is my favorite Halo game yeah the fall of reach that final battle was badass
WORT WORT WORT
I can't understand you. Go back to your planet
AAAAAAHHHHH ROLL THEM UP
Top notch video as always. Sweet mercy, I love this channel. Reach is certainly a remarkable colony that deserves to be remembered. Hopefully we’ll see Reach again in future Halo games or books, this time in the process of being rebuilt as the UNSC returns to its fortress amongst the stars.
Boy, now I feel like playing Halo: Reach again.
Very nice video and good tribute to one of the most important planets in the Halo-universe.
The mountains especially remind me of what we get to see of Alderaan in Revenge of the Sith and The Old Republic.
Ok I’m actually in love with the fact that people still make videos of Reach 🙏
'Its the winter contingency Sir.'
........'May God help us all'
Next time can you go over more geography such as continents, major oceans and cities?
We need a High Command video on the Battle of Reach
Just became a member of the templin institute. wow
Halo 5 player: Let me guess... Your home?
Noble 6: It was. And it was beautiful. Reach was like most games.
Too many players to go around and bungie is gone but then 343 industries offered a solution, Halo 4.
Remember Reach...
War takes but It leaves us with heros and heroes never die!
The only other halo game I've played
I played Halo 1, Halo 3 (the normal one and ODST), and Halo 4.
Did you play any of the better ones?
@@dr.catherineelizabethhalse1820 Reach was the last good Halo imho
@@dr.catherineelizabethhalse1820 The only games that could afford that title are 2 and 3, and even then Reach is nowhere near a bad game, only the book purists hate it
@@lionhartjohn1000 Yeah... Still the the third worst in my opinion. Even ODST was better.
That honestly makes the fact it took over a month to fall much more impressive.
I agree with Templin’s recommendation. Fall of Reach is an amazing book. My favorite part is Captain Keyes’ naval tactics
Recommendation for Atlas. Eureka, America's smartest little town.
Halo Reach is still the best game out of the series
yep
Is Reach the third planet in the Epsilon system? If so, then Babylon 5 orbits Reach pre-terraforming
razgriz501 it’s the second planet
@@ghostofelysium3848 Ah, well. Would've been cool if Reach was Epsilon 3. Nice B5 reference
First actually
Reach was our last best hope for victory..
Oh god, and the Ancient Machine in B5 is like the Forerunner tech in Halo!
Marine: Lieutenant, get on board! We need to get the hell outta here!!!
N6: Negative. I have the gun. Good luck, sir.
Keyes: Good luck to you, Spartan.
Remembering the fallen Noble Team (Carter, Kat, Emille, Jorge, and two Noble Sixes)
Reach is just the love child of Alderaan and Carida. It’s got Alderaan’s mountains, forests, and plains; and Carida’s deserts and ice fields.
It would be nice if on a future Halo title or DLC they return to Reach. It would be interesting to see how much it changed years later.
It’s always a good day when y’all post a halo video. I’m fine with you other videos, but Halo is my fav
I see my peoples tragic history folowed us in the stars as well. Hungarian here! It was a nice suprise to hear the lore of the planet.
Favourite quote from the entire campaign: "I should have become a watch maker."
Chills from your narration. Great job.
The planet fell before the Spartans did
"I know we're losing! I want to know if we've lost..."
I was just doing a legendary play through of this amazing game this week love your guys videos and please do more in the halo universe
Halo is so beautiful.
FOR THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES DEFENDING EARTH AND HER COLONIES.
For anyone who misses the old days of matchmaking in Reach, plenty of people are still playing and finding a match only takes a few minutes! Install on your Xbox One or just pop it in your 360 like you did 8 years ago and have some fun!
That music near the end was intense!

Excellent video on an IP that means allot to me. Also can't recommend Eric Nylund's Fall of Reach enough.
This channel is perfection
I’m not illiterate just blind! And I already have my audible subscription! Thank you for the title recommendation because I didn’t know they had that one available to listen to.
UNSC loses were high but I seem to recall the Covenant taking a few hits too.
