    While never directly addressed in the show, Academy Award winning actress Sally Field did briefly enter the US Space Program as an astronaut on the Pathfinder mission just prior to filming Steel Magnolias. Either that or we made a mistake in this one. Our apologies to Sally Ride.

      LOL ^_^
      I've never watched the show, despite its intriguing premise, so I wondered if this was some kind of joke the show made about the character.
      That being said, Thanks for summing up the show in this bit. I wish I had the time (and money) to watch all the shows I would like to see, and this one just didn't make the list.
      I will have to find a wiki, though, because I wonder: did the Cuban Missile Crisis not happen in the 'For All Mankind" Universe? This Jamestown Incident seems to be the 'stand in' for that one (almost causing WW3).

    Fun facts about the Sea Dragon: it was designed IRL to take advantage of the fact that rocket fuel isn't that expensive compared to all the other expenses that go into a space launch, by being an absolute massive rocket with an engine comparatively cheaper and less efficient than the Saturn 5's F1 (at least ton for ton). It was meant to be launched from the water not to support it's weight and to dampen it's sound so it doesn't destroy itself. It never got off the drawing board IRL because NASA scaled back it's missions after Apollo 11, and they didn't have anything planned that could take advantage of the Sea Dragon's massive payload capacity.

      I see it more as the power of propaganda harnessed for the good of the many. The Space Race was about developing navigation, surveillance and weapons satellites with global reach. But the U.S. had to _sell_ the space race as a peaceful contest of science and exploration in order to maintain public support.
      In the end though, inventions like GPS, computers, miniaturized computers and vacuum-sealed food have utterly changed our societies and led to even greater technological breakthroughs.
      Humans need a great challenge - typically, we find it in war. But we can also find it in searching for a new home.

      “We came in peace, for all mankind.” was the motto of Apollo 11, well before the meaninglessness of Apollo-Soyuz.

    • @denverbeek
      @denverbeek 2 роки тому +30

      @@Egilhelmson The Soviets never "abandoned" the space race. They led the space race until the US moved the goalpost and declared that "going to the moon means we won the space race". Up to that point, the soviets had beat America to the punch on every space milestone. They maintained their own space station until the US' Skylabs burned up in atmosphere, then they collaborated with the rest of the world on the ISS, fielding the crew modules used to ferry astronauts to and from the station.

    • @bad74maverick1
      @bad74maverick1 2 роки тому +6

      @Denver Beek the Soviets made it to space, but their goal was to the moon same as the US. So lets look at this in context.
      As for the space race the germans beat both and won when they launched a new v2 from Peenemünde, and became the first known man-made object to reach space, traveling 118 miles on October 3, 1942.
      The soviets made it to space first and conveyed aspirations to the moon. The soviets won the orbit race with Yuri Gagarin. The US however beat them to the moon. And their first station was a catastrophe. April 19, 1971, the Soviet Union placed into orbit Salyut, the world’s first space station. Salyut hosted the crew of Georgi T. Dobrovolski, Vladislav N. Volkov, and Viktor I. Patsayev. The flight ended tragically when the crew died due to the sudden depressurization of their Soyuz 11 spacecraft shortly before reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. That left the US ahead with the first successful space station, skylab which lasted May 25, 1973 to February 8,1974 kept astronauts 84 days, a record at the time over the soviets and when tests were completed for the Saturn v phase tests it was allowed to fall back to earth. Now if all that plus the moon landing isn't enough to show the US was ahead in most areas of space exploration, the ussr lost cosmonauts in space accidents when the US didn't.

    My gripe with this was the ROE in the first incident. You're telling me the US didn't have some form of Russian translator with them or a team member that understands Russian? Or why the Russians don't have some form of English translation on them? Not only did they not comply with the Marines to back off, but they apparently thought the Marines weren't gonna risk shooting them. And then the Russians decided to assault the US base Jamestown to get their man back, which alone could spark WWIII without telling their own government. Both sides were very stupid in how they dealt with the situation.

      The russians weren't stupid. This was likely the exact result that they wanted. They felt threatened by the Americans militarizing Jamestown, so they looked for a reason to shoot back but not to shoot first. So they put these cosmonauts there to provoke the americans. I don't think the cosmonauts were on board with that, which might be why one of them asked for asylum in the US despite getting shot by an american. Mother Russia literally put him there to die, just so they can save face.

    Gotta say, I really enjoyed this show. The arcs involving space politics and dogma were some really griping stuff. But I have to say everything and anything involving the Baldwin’s home drama was the biggest pain point. Hell half the time it jumped back to the Baldwin family in the 2nd half of the 2nd season I really just wanted to skip but couldn’t out of risking missing some key point that is sprinkled in for use in the space plots.

      The family drama was great for exploring and critiquing the family dynamics of that time. It addresses the reality of people from that era (and even still today,) not having emotional maturity and rejecting therapy when they desperately need, and the show then demonstrates the consequences those societal pressures can have on relationships. The culture of the time is just as important as the politics and science of the era, and the show makes sure to cover as much of it as it can.

    For All Mankind is the Star Trek prequel I never knew I wanted.
    And it's funny how after writing for Star Trek, Ron Moore did an anti-Star Trek show with BSG, and now he's doing a proto-Star Trek.
    Maybe Moore is ready to do more Star Trek now. I really wish Paramount/CBS would just bring him back and give him control of Star Trek. If Paramount won't do that, maybe Seth MacFarlane should hire Moore to write for the Orville.

    This reminds me of the exceptional Aurora 4X, the infamous spreadsheet simulator. Its creator has forums where he posts battle reports on the games he runs, and one of them is the space race continuing into an interstellar age, with NATO and the Warsaw Pact discovering jump points, settling new worlds, and of course building space fleets and glaring tensely at each other. Then third parties like China get into the mix, and then literal, actual aliens, all while human politics are already on a knife's edge and Earth is no longer our only home, removing the strongest disincentive to all-out nuclear apocalypse... the story of this game report thing was so gripping, would strongly recommend.
