i remember as a child i loved how this looked on the billboards. at a time where i basically only cared for supercars like every child this was quite an archivement. and it was futuristic. they would have to change very little and it woold look totally normal today. i dont get why so many people dont like the look of it, especially the type r, where the rear window bump looks so well integrated with the spoiler.

@@SeanWithaFada i most definitely agree, the spoiler ruined it massively, my main point though was it still looks like a new car today despite how old it is, those other models look very nice, no argument there and personally I would have an ep3 over the fn2 hands down(even though I owned and fn2) but as for looking dated you can't deny the fn2 could have been released recently.

@@SoulTouchMusic93 Inside Lane took both the EP3 (face-lifted) and FN2 to the Hungaroring F1 track during the FK2R launch in 2016 and with a professional driver the FN2 lapped the circuit quicker. They did say the EP3 was more "raw" and fun, but as others have stated the myth of it being slower is exactly that, a myth. The FN2 has a much better sorted front end, more accurate steering and is more stable around corners, if less involving relative to the EP3. “Worst Type R”…the only reason why people say this is because Jeremy Clarksoon said so. Mostly regarding the choice not to continue giving independent rear suspension like Honda usually does.
But for an average driver on the street, this thing will give you a smile, ear to ear.
This one and the next generation after it are the last cars too look like a genuine “small” Japanese sport cars.

I bought an FN2 9 months or so ago and am absolutely in love with it. Cant compare it to an EP3 as I've never driven one, but previously I had an R53 mini cooper S, a Clio 172 Cup and a Fiat 100hp. All were modded in terms of springs, shocks, exhaust, remaps etc. and the first 2 where pretty close to the FN2's power yet significantly lighter. Despite all that the FN2 is my favorite in every way hands down. Yes its big and heavy , plus the stock suspension is merely 'adequate' but as a useable car for a petrolhead it ticks almost every box possible; infinitely reliable even when thrashed on a daily basis? check. large boot and tonnes of legroom in the back? check. Decent mpg when driven sensibly? check. Massively good fun when happily pushed to above 8,000rpm? check. Steering thats light and PAS yet full of feeling & accurate enough for decent B road runs? check. Its not hugely quick by modern standards , but what it does do is make you grin :) No torque whatsoever but all that ends up meaning is you have to really drive it in order to make it come alive. It'll cruise quietly and fairly comfortably if thats what you want, but really working it up to near/on the limiter is when it becomes a Type R. First car I've ever driven that actually feels like it wants you to rev the nuts off it, and shows no signs of discomfort when you do so. Imo as a reliable long term hot hatch for under 4k its probably the best choice out there. Sure you could get a mainstream high mileage turbo hatch thats newer and faster, but how long is that going to last? 200,000 miles later you'd be glad you went for the Honda.

I've always been interested in the Type Rs from the hype they get for well sorted drivers cars. Surprised to see you loved It more than your previous rockets.
Honestly I've overlooked this generation cus of the bad rap people always give it but maybe that's bit overplayed? I might consider one of these over an EP3 now. I'd just assumed the FN2 was a wash.

I had both Ep3 (pre facelifted) and FN2 R's. I actually preferred the FN2 overall. Yes, it was less banzai and manic, but a more refined drive in total. I always felt like I had gone 9 rounds with Mike Tyson in the Ep3, even on short A road journeys it was never a settled ride. Most of all I remember the nasty fight that broke out online in the forums about the new R not being a proper R because of the weight etc, and it was not as fast blah blah. I think the gearing changes made it equally fast as the Ep3, but the engine power map was massaged to give it more down low so it never had the VTEC kick in same amount as the old car. It felt slower, but I never thought it was in reality point to point.
In truth by making the car more comfortable and with more goodies inside Honda were just ahead of the curve, they prejudged that the mass market taste for stripped out rice rockets was going away.

Great sound from the exhaust, lower down torque, great steering feeling (better than the ep3 in my opinion) so don't let the haters put people off. It's a great car. Looks better than an ep3 and more features. If you can get one with the limited slip diff 2010 onwards or champ white or mugen even better

Great upload. Absolutely love the FN2, stunning design and as you said, still fresh. Was totally bonkers in it's day in terms of design. As for that sound, simply beautiful. Love the shot with Cardington airsheds in the background, I'm from Bedford, Brickhill. Not many of these made it down to NZ, but when you see one it's a dream. Meanwhiles, people who want to drive fast (lets be honest, that is what a Type R is supposed to be for) will evade this car like the plague.
Bet you're one of those people who will tie a roof box to a Ferrari "Because it's practical"...
Look, I get it, you're happy with your car, but what if I told you the previous version going back to 1988 are ALL faster, handle better and have far more potential?
I get it, you prolly think I'm just being salty. But with each successive model, performance has gone down, not up. The EP Sacrificed double wishbone for McPherson struts. The FN2 sacrificed the double wishbone it had left in the rear for a solid axle. _A Solid Axle_ ...
I will have you know that in 80's, the understanding was you would only put that technology on the cheapest, most un-sporty cars you could find. Fast forward 30+ years and here we are, back at start.
But why would Honda do that? I hear you ask.
The problem with the actual fast versions of the civic was basically the gearbox and steering. The gearbox was too smooth, the steering wheel too light. And thats how an expensive car marketed at the younger generations ended up being bought almost exclusively by pensioners. The only problem was the low seating position, but with the gearbox being that smooth and the steering wheel that light, the pensioners all bought it en-masse anyway. The devious people at the Honda marketing department saw this happen and told the design department to focus more on old people.
Thats how the EP got its high seating position, lost the double wishbone in the front for the sake of "space and practicality" and why the gearbox is no longer on the floor.. It's also the reason why the EP3 gained a whopping 200+ kg's despite equipping lighter McPherson struts in the front: With the focus shifting away from supension and handling towards practicality and creature comforts, they needed to stiffen up the chassis to at least get a hint of sportyness and added a metric ton of electronics.
This trend continued with the FN2. This time around, the handling/suspension department got sent home indefinitely. The rear double wishbone got ditched as well. After seeing the pensioners being happy with the EP3, the marketing department stated that the Civic was to mainly become a people carrier, forgoing all sportyness. In order to try and please people like me, they kept a Type R version in the hopes it would still cement the Civic as a sporty car in the hearts and minds of the Honda fans.
Alas, you can take schoolbus and strap 4 Veyron engines in it, but that does not a sports car make.

Refreshing to see the UK Type R, I owned a 2007 Civic Si sedan in US, watching this reminds me how fun that car was and that I have to come to the UK and experience the type R's myself. I've always felt here in the states we were always playing catch up to what was available in the UK, though sounds like those earlier years the lsd perhaps was one extra we got that you didn't. Honda nailed the suspension on my 2007, going from 17" to 18" wheels would not change much if anything handling wise without also modifying the suspension.

Fn2 is the more mature intelligent man's Civic Type R,👍 ok I might be so nice cos I actually own one on a GTnav spec that actually has things like voice control it way head of any car from that era and the sat nav is very good. Ive Driven every Civic Type R in carnation including the new ones and this one is by far more fun around town and country lanes and all usable if you'd like a stiff suspension. And you can fit loads of stuff on it and my 3 kids who loves the car compared to any boring normal family car. The interior still space age compared to most hatchbacks not boring looks like the golfs. Yes has a few querks but this is already becoming a classic hot hatch. The GT spec I have dual climate control a cold glove box sat nav cruise control hands-free Bluetooth and as I said voice control all in all a great package. EP3 whas his daddy I'm really grateful but that was a dinosaur compared to this car car and the VTEC kicked in to late in that one find little track car not really a usable one, face my fn2 at Brands Hatch and it had a fantastic sounded awesome with a few mods like HKS and I'm 48 years old and have a massive smile on my face every time I drive it👍👍👍👍

Had 2 ep3s and 2 fn2s plus a dc2 integra in our family. All of them were brilliant. The fn2s were a much better planted ride a very very high speed, far more stable than an ep3, that was because the suspension was much stiffer but the downside was a very very harsh ride which would shake you fillings out if you say in the back. If I had to pick from the 3 it would be the Integra for me (more old school) Whilst it hadn't got the physical BHP of the other 2 its performance was magic and went round corners on rails. Happy days!!!!!!

As for wheels and tyres, it's down to personal preference. I preferred 17" wheels, some preferred 18's and a few 19's. I quite liked my tyres to be stuff if that makes any sense, I don't know much about tyres but there are certain tyres I preferred more than others because they gave more road feedback.

After 8 years of driving turbo-diesels I do miss the deep wells of torque, and I'd like more going on below 4,000 revs, but it actually pulls adequately in any gear, it just takes some getting used to that to overtake you're probably going to have to drop 3 cogs. My main gripe was that for motorway cruising, the short gearing and subsequently the noise that came with the 4000 odd RPMs it was doing simply made it too loud for everyday use. @@tommac19921 I like the idea of fiddling with your gear ratio's to achieve your goals, but I never understood why the 6th gear is so long in naturally aspirated cars. My simple Fiesta 1.6 also did 4000 rpm on the highway. I know they choose 6th gear in such a way as to have the highest possible top speed, but why not have that in 5th gear? And use 6th gear for comfortable cruising and improved fuel economy.
I know this car isn't meant for me, I drew that conclusion that very day. But the same holds true for me for a lot of other hot hatches. I like sporty handling as much as the next guy, but oftentimes I feel like comfort suffers too much. Luckily nowadays a lot of the hatches allow for various drive modes, and are generally pretty comfortable for cruising.

I won't disagree, I didn't like the stock setup, but as mentioned in this vid it's easily sorted with an aftermarket setup

@@HerbsmanRevs I did say to him that if there's a more supple set up available then I'd fit it and keep the car because to me it was the only main flaw, although I'd have liked a rear wash wipe too but that's not a deal breaker. He got rid though and went back to a 320d, each to their own.

Go get one mate. I've had mine for over a year now. Great motor. Not perfect but I paid £5000 for mine with 50000 miles and full service history. It needed a service last month and that was £300. Fuel and tax are expensive but it very cheap speed..
      Safe driving

Oddly enough this has been this most intriguing Type-R for me and I’ve wanted one ever since I first came across it. There is something so special about it! ...unfortunately, I live in the USA though sooooo...yeah...it’ll be a while 😂

I can't wait until this is 25 years or older so I can import one to the states. I am a diehard Honda guy and want to own one of each gen of the Type-R - but I really want to own the ones that didn't come to the states like the FN2 and FK2!

I work in the US alot and one of my colleagues over there has a Honda Si of the same vintage. I think they make 175bhp ?. So a little less than the EU spec Type R. However the US got the Japanese Coupe body which we didnt get. I think it looks better personally.
