Here's Why The FN2 Civic Type R Mugen is One Of The Most Special Hondas Ever Made

  • In today's video, I get to drive a phenomenally rare and special hot hatchback - the Honda Civic Type R Mugen. Based on the generally unloved FN2 Civic Type R, this was the first car Mugen ever built for a market outside of the UK.
With reworked engine, suspension and body - only 16 examples were ever sold, and this one is still in the possession of its original owner. When new, these commanded close to £40,000 - but was it worth it?

Your original video on the FN2 is part of why I have one. Everyone gets thier panties in a bunch over not having double wishbones, but frankly, unless you're a driver in the grade of Tom Kristiansen or George Russell (which 99% are not, no matter how good you are on Forza 4, you're just not) you wouldn't even notice if one were substituted for the other. The FN2 might be more "grown up", but that just means it has things that make it an excellent long distance cruiser. The option of Xenon Headlights, Cruise Control and dual zone climate control mean that this thing is as competent at the commute to work as it is the furiously driven track day. I've put 21,000 miles on mine in the year i've owned it. Not a single thing has gone wrong. I've serviced it, I've cleaned it, I've driven it. This Mugen Edition is lovely, and I'm sad more weren't sold. What a cracking car!

    • @ApothecaryTerry
      @ApothecaryTerry Рік тому +1

I've not owned either, but I've test driven both an FN2 and FK8. The FK8 lost out to a 981 Cayman S...by a mile if I'm honest, I found the FK8 outright disappointing, but I still smile whenever I see an FN2. In some ways it is just a worse EP3, but it's also the last, most modern Honda with a proper VTEC engine. Also looks tasty, those triangular exhaust tips still do it for me, as does the stepped dash design.
The FN2 is one of only 2 cars I've never owned that I could have and regret not buying- the other being a Peugeot 306 GTi-6, my favourite car of all time. That and the FN2 for me perfectly represent fun > fast.

@@Trumppower Their current used values are almost identical, around £30k. Running costs are also similar. For anyone without kids, comparing the 981CS and FK8 is a very reasonable thing to do. If the extra seats aren't an issue, the FK8 is a clear loser. It's not bad, it's just a lot less good.
Incidentally, I'm now looking for a fun manual hot hatch. This year I've driven the Focus ST, Leon Cupra 300, 308 GTi, Megane RS, i30N and FK8. Also an S4 and 540i xDrive because I could. The 308 and i30N are much more fun than the FK8 on public roads. Not faster, but all of those are much faster than anyone needs so that's totally irrelevant. As I said, the FK8 isn't bad, but it's not as great as people seem to think- they're now all about lap times, they've lost the fun of old Type Rs.

Absolutely loved my Championship White FN2, I had number 001 - with reg plate HUY. It can be seen in many promotional videos and was even driven by, and photographed with Jenson Button during a promotional event on its release, which can be found online.
It was a fantastic car, and was such a pleasure to drive, you could really enjoy a good blast without actually going ballistic. It was stiff as hell, and it had plenty of weird quirks, mainly the seat returning to it's stock position after letting rear passengers in each time. They were soon redirected to the passenger side only!
It soon became more of a pain than a joy due to my commuting and the fact that my Mrs absolutely hated driving it due to it's visibility and heavy clutch - so I sold it on to a lovely chap with a Japanese tuning company. Safe to say - he's done it justice!
I traded up for a five door manual 125d M Sport which is actually, a brilliant car, and a decision I'm glad I made, because it is everything I currently need and plenty fast enough to get my kicks - but the engine, colour and special feeling the FN2 gave me is something I'll always cherish!

The best thing about the FN2 is everyone loves it. Especially women. And I don’t mean you will find a lady friend because of one, but as a car guy, it makes it much easier when the women in your life enjoy being in the car.

@@johnmitchell2269 The EP3 (mine was the substantially similar DC5 Integra Type R) might handle 'better' in the sense of having a more oversteer chassis balance but it definitely doesn't handle 'better' in the sense of being more predictable and providing more confidence. The flawed suspension geometry sees to that.
The FN2 is definitely more predictable IMO, whereas the DC5 is constantly subject to bump steer and torque steer with that wonky steering rack where the arms come out of the middle of the rack. I tried the SHG Delrin steering rack slider and it still wasn't great.

I've got to say Jay, amazing video and I'm so glad someone with Honda background has done a video on the M20 Type R.
I've owned an FN2 for a year, but boy in that year of ownership I've turned that stock FN2 GT into a mental car compared to some other older hot hatches of its era.
After learning how to drive that car hard, I started going the modified route, found out how to unlock the true potential of the mighty N/A K20. Originally started off with a Milltek exhaust, just to add more sound to it and damn did it sound good when it changed cam profiles! Then I added a K&N panel filter just for some extra induction noise, didn't disappoint either. Shortly after that I had gotten myself a Tegiwa exhaust manifold, getting rid of that disgusting "cast iron" manifold, the breathing aspect was nearly finished, decided to go for the infamous HKS induction kit which many on the groups will know is also called a "hot air intake" since it sucks air from within the engine bay, but the sound you got from it when on VTEC was immense, unlike anything else I've ever experienced. Made the trip to Paul West (TPW Engineering) who mapped my car on a dyno with EcuTek software (4 switchable maps were available), top end the car had gained 30bhp at the flywheel which if you're used to turbo tuning, is nothing. However the power I had gained in the Mid-Range of the engine is even more than the power of the M20 in the Mid-Range having compared my graph to the Mugen one shown in the video. Some cars that I had matched in my 230bhp FN2 on straights and corners were surprised if not shocked. It put a smile on my face every single time I drove it, added some lightweight Rota wheels to it, the unsprung mass helped out in the end as well as polybushing the whole suspension gave you even more feel through the steering and gave the car a sophisticated stiffness without having to lower or modify the suspension. Paired with sticky tyres such as the Michelin PS4, I had grip for days, unfortunately this was an 08 model which did not have an LSD like the last 6 months of production of the FN2 did and CW/M200/M20.
All in all, I still miss that car, that naturally aspirated scream. Now I drive an FK2 Type R which I absolutely love to bits, however even though it offers so much more in corners, it does feel like what the FN2 should've been like. Great review by yourself, hope to see more Honda content in the future.

As an FN2 owner for 3 years, the only true dynamic flaw is the too soft rear beam, and that makes the car understeer. Putting stiffer rear spring or rear sway bar can change the car completely. But out of the box, Renaults and fiesta st are just more fun.

    • @TassieLorenzo

That's very true! A shame that Honda didn't follow the lead of Renault Sport or Ford in setting a mid-corner overseer balance from the factory.
"Putting stiffer rear spring or rear sway bar can change the car completely." I just put wider wheels on the front and set higher rear tyre pressures and that seems quite a bit better without doing any actual modifications. 🙂

It always seems insane to me when people can't justify a few thousand more for a v spec or a mugen, tommi makinen, etc when it'll make complete sense when you sell it. Buying this car new was the smart and obvious choice

People fail to see the big picture and forget about depreciation; which is often the biggest cost.
My little collection includes an old Defender (bought 4 years ago) and Focus RS mk3 (bought nearly new).
Other than expensive servicing and the cost of interest on the loans, I won’t have lost a penny on them.
Looking at getting an Up! GTI runaround too, which I doubt I’ll lose much on either.

I mean, that's not entirely the case when you take inflation into account.
£40k in 2010 was the equivalent of £57k today, so it still hasn't really broken even yet. Also, an extreme example of this would be something like a vauxhall VX490 . They sold for about £4.5k when new, and usable examples sell for about £5k now. Does that mean he's made £500 profit? No!
you've also got to factor in the much higher running costs of owning these bespoke cars too. (insurance, spare parts etc)

    • @kdpwt
      @kdpwt Рік тому

@@ihavenousername1805 but compared to buying a standard car new, where those lost more than half of their value, and even more because of inflation, they seem like no brainers

£37,599 in 2010 according to the Bank of England, would be £47k in 2021.
So on the one that sold for £45k, for 12 years use, it would have cost you £2k in depreciation in real terms - for a car that never had a cult following like the old ones.

But a standard car was literally half the price so it much more accessible to 95% of prospective buyers.
Dumping a shit ton of money into something that'll barely break even after 10-15 years isn't a very good investment.
If you've got money to burn on expensive cars, and you're still worried about the value, then you may as well just get something that's already ballooned in price(focus RS, porsche Gt3 etc) , and 95% of the time you'll get your money back, and usually a few grand more.
Much faster and less riskier than gambling on wether something will become desirable in 15 years time or not.
And breaking even isn't a "huge profit" if you've had a load of your money tied up in one asset for 10 years. That money could have been making you much more money during that timeframe.

OK... So I'm a petrol-head of a certain generation. I'm blessed to be a family man - amazing wife, two wonderful grown-up children, even a dog..! So as much as I fantasize, I won't be getting a Type R any time soon (boooo..!!!) BUT we do have a facelift 2011 1.8 si ivtec which I love. It's a used-buy, had-a-hard-life five-door family run around, but I believe it's got something of the Mugen / Type R in it's DNA. Definitely a drivers car - precise steering, slick gear-change, good linear power delivery, trustworthy braking etc. (and harsh ride over potholes..!) It's a pale reflection undoubtably, but a reflection nonetheless (hurray..!!) All credit to Honda.
