Had mine since 2010, meant to be a bit of fun for a year or so. I kid you not, maintenance has been a dream, every car I owned before was cheaper to buy, failed every mot. All I've done with this baby is tires, brakes and the battery... it's incredible. I've had it off the road for a year (moved house n covid), took it to the garage expecting the worst... 1 caliper change and the fluids... started up like a dream, cleaned the rust of the brakes and it purrs. It still represents the flagship of the time, no driver assists or auto handbrake etc, but dual climate control, refrigerated glove box, cruise, a nifty screen demist button... oh yeah, and the engine. It's a fairly normal 2 litre until the point that most cars change gears... then it breathes fire and screams until 8000 revs, gear after gear. You, will, smile! Mine cost around 8-9k back then... the missus has a lovely year old golf, 22k.... she constantly tells me she made the wrong choice and wants one. It's just sexy.

Thank you for this video. I have the 2.2 diesel version of this car and have recently been wanting to up grade to a type R but the high mileage and really low price tag always makes me think there has to be something wrong with it, but after this video you have convinced me to not be afraid to pull the trigger if I can find the right one😀

I'm thinking about spending 4-5k on the Type R. I had the standard Civic when they first come out. Paid 12k. Very good cars lots of tech. It's a dive into the unknown with any car. I would think look for one from a dealer and one with lots of History.

Had one 5 yrs ago, sold it with 156k miles. The only issue it ever had was the power steering ecu packed up. I had 3 EP3's before, this was a nicer car but it did feel slower + the EP3 gear box was a masterpiece.

  • @HerbsmanRevs

I've had mine for 8 years, not bored yet. It's been running 250bhp for 5 of those years and it's hasn't had a single issue. Really practical too. Great daily driver track ready car. A bit tame in stock form but there are loads of nicely modded ones out there. Best mod is 4-2-1 manifold, really opens up the mid-range up. Speak to TDi North for engine work/tuning and Grinspeed for everything else.

99K Miles, slowly creeping up to 100K and only issue was the starter motor which I got fixed under dealer warranty. Had it 3 months now and this is the most fun car I’ve driven in a while, Clarkson’s review of this ruined the car for years.
Just check the service history and make sure the valve clearances have been done, I think I’m going to struggle to kill this one.

Issue with higher mileage cars is they'll be harder to sell on in the future for a decent price. But one should be buying cars to enjoy and not to try to profit on...
Anyway the FN2 is probably as good as they come, most things on it can be done yourself if money is tight. I have a regular 1.8 5 door car and I do all my own servicing including changing all 4 corners of the suspension. The FN2 uses exactly the same setup so it'll be just as easy. Obviously check things like clutch and gearbox but they're easily done. They don't seem to rust all that much but check the boot isn't leaking as in get to the lower carpet under the false floor. The leak is easy enough to fix, just annoying in Winter.
The reason why I don't like the FN2 personally is it doesn't come in 5 door and it's too hardcore for my aging sensibilities. I value ride comfort over out and out handling. Taking nothing away from the K20 engine however as it's the last of the line of the high revving NA engines, of which we'll never see again. I've had an MB6 with the B18C4 in it so I fully get the appeal of Honda's VTEC.
