Wrapping up my learning on the Mig-21 as many of you suggested I used the Thrust to Weight advantage of the Mig-21 to climb and pull the F-5 into Vertical situations which did work well from time to time just be careful if the F-5 has fox-2s its not going to be as simple as just climbing.

“The MIG-21 isn’t really a dog fighter, it’s more of a hit and run aircraft”
War thunder RB: *Haha MIG-21 turn rate go brrrrr*
You get maybe 2 hard turns before you barely stay in the sky. It just feels more nimble than it is because it fights the behemoth that is the F-4 phantom and the retards that try to low speed turnfight in it
The MiG-21 is a great turn fighter, with a very good turning circle and generally great kinematic capability, as long as it's above 500Km/h. When under that speed turning will make you pull very high AOA and Instability, use your acceleration to extend and re-engage.
Mig-21 ended being dogfighter by circumstances not by design. Its a interceptor that happens to turn good as long as it has speed.
@@quint2885 Even the earlier MiG-21s have excellent energy retention if you consider how hard they can pull. Obviously they lose more energy than something like a phantom that just can't pull, but the energy retention is disproportionately high for MiGs compared to the turn rate.
@@quint2885 Its good in a 1 circle its not so good in a 2 circle. The Phantom
is vastly superior in a 2 circle.

I wish I could like this video more than once, I'm a sucker for the MiG-21. I really need to take the time to learn how to fly it.
Something about the Mig 21 that just pulls at my heart strings !
@@eboranshard6220 its an awesome plane and an amazing module for how antiquated it is.
By the way, you can buy one in the USA, deweaponized.
@@mamdouh-Tawadros I'm sure you can but I'm sure you'd be paying out the ass for a plane made in the 60s or 70s and is a former fighter jet that's been ridden harder than a $30 hooker in a brothel.
As someone who was friends with a Vietnamese mig-21 pilot: don't. It's a deadly aircraft, but it's extremely unforgiving, especially when landing. My friend got out because pilots kept dying in accidents.
Regarding the MiG-21 flopping about when the stick is pulled all the way back, at 12:40 I would be remiss to point out that according to the AOA indicator, you were in the Red. Pulling upwards of over 30+ degrees AOA.
The Fishbed is by all accounts fairly straight forward and simple to fly but unlike later MiG's like the MiG-23MLD and MiG-29, there is no more sophisticated means of restricting High AOA flying like a Pull-Through Stick limiter. Its a testament to the unique characteristic vortex lift of the Delta Wing that you could pull such AOA and at lower speeds too.
I wish I had a Makarov.
@@PotatoeJoe69 Yeah as I noted, the MiG-21 and those Delta wing actually give very good AoA performance and at low speeds. But Growling here constantly red-lines the aircraft and I am not sure he knows why it gets wobbly in the flight regime he ends up in. He blames the low speed but we can obviously see the 28*+ AoA he is pulling in a non FBW aircraft.
These videos are amazing, demonstrating the art and science of ACM in a way that would be impossible to grasp without DCS and this youtube channel.

Aah i love the F-5!! Would have loved to see how a fully tricked out F-20 Tiger Shark did versus other planes from that era.
I'd guess maybe a little worse than an F-16.
Missiles taking time to launch is strange knowing that the R-60 was specifically designed for dog fighting where the launch range are minimal and snapshots are frequent. It was to overcome the short comings of the AA-2 Atolls
It doesn't take long to launch, you hold down the trigger, and the aircraft fires when it has a solution that will probably hit. If it's not firing, it's because the missile would most likely not track or not keep the target in the seekers range after being fired. It's weird but I've come to appreciate it flying the MiG-21, when I fire I know almost certainly that I will hit.
A suggestion for future videos. I think it would be interesting to make videos where you change into the opposing aircraft every other round. I dont know how much more work would be involved in that but it would probably be a good way to distinguish the aircraft and the pilots more.
ya the problem with that is that the guy flying with me may not always have the other aircraft or be proficient in it.

If this is modeled correctly, the F-5 and MiG-21 EM charts are nearly identical with an advantage to the MiG in speed and T/W.
That’s surprising considering they seem like opposite aircraft to me (single vs dual engine, delta wing vs ? wing, interceptor vs more normal fighter)
the first aircrafts of both Iranian and Iraqi airforce! cool content!
The Mig-21 is a ground-controlled interceptor. It is not a fangs-out phone booth dog fighter. That means that the pilot, if it wants the fight, should extend as you mentioned, then re-engage at it's own peril.

the newest Mig-21's do that "emergency" power mode trick and (allegedly) keep up with an F-16a. I'd love to see what that fight would look like
It would be really awesome if Longshot could upload his own video of this fight on his channel and let us see these fights from the other perspective too plus all the G pulling voices that make it even more realistic :)
I'd love to see more F-35 videos! Maybe some BVR or some Air to Ground combined with fighter to show off it's stealth and multi-role nature.

The F-15 tiger is my sleep paralysis demon
Good shot by longshot... now there is an understatement.
I think it's cool that you can see the pitot tube wiggle under g's on the mig21
As I've gotten to learn more about these planes I have to say I have a soft spot for the F-5. Totally awesome design.
I feel ya. It's always been one of my favorites.
@@DudemeisterNL I think it was one of the best designs ever simply because they created that monster and it was cheap and easy to maintain. So much bang for the buck.
This shows how critical it is for the missile to lead the target.
I wonder if you're under impression of, Mig-21 can't dogfight against F-4 because the mod you played last video F-4 is so much better.
You know that one it's F-15 flight model right?
Robin Olds himself said in History Channel's Dogfights something like, "it's very stupid to fight Mig-21 in higher altitude, if you can drag him to hi speed low altitude then it's OK but up high, forget it".
no its not using the f15 flight model its modified, also no I dont think that because of the mod lol its well known that the mig21 has a terrible track record against f4s that actually knew it was there.
also note at higher altitude its hard to fight any delta fighter cuz as long as they can dump their nose they will be a problem. also the F-4 could rate the shit out of the mig21 as long it rate fought him. which is exactly what they always did against mig21, was was a successful aircraft as long as it was used as a hit and run interceptor which is how the NVA used it.
@@GrowlingSidewinder While I do agree that F-4 can rate the shit out of Mig-21, but isn't that how you fight a mirage in a Hornet? It doesn't mean Hornet is better than Mirage right?
General Robin Olds himself said that in Dogfights: The greatest air battle once and another episode I don't remember.
Maybe hitting the merge at higher altitude would be interesting cuz Mig-21 can't do shit down low like that.
F-4 pilots drag mig down low and rate fight them. But they also turn tail and run when found mig at high altitude, at least in the same episode I watch the first American ace in that war did that.

quite the show for that driver there.
I've been flying both of these over the last week, trying to get into the late cold war groove. Just a shame most of the PVE servers are almost exclusively more modern jets. That being said the MiG 21 is pretty punishing for a pilot who rarely dogfights anyway. Especially given the multi step process to switch between different kinds of missiles where you can very easily make them all safe as you're in the merge, which is always fun.
Tip when dogfighting, keep and eye on your speed and AOA meters. If you stay above 500Km/h and below the red zone in AOA, you have a very tight turn and almost always enough speed to go vertical or extend and re-engage.
I have the pylon selector knob mapped to my hotas in game. I select the first pylon before the merge and can tap the hat switch to select the next pylon.
@@arguywindham1101you prolly know now but you only need to set it to pylon 4 and it will fire all of them
That typo tho haha, love these!
Hey GS, regarding the UA-cam compression issues, have you tried capturing your gameplay in 1440P60 and then upscaling it to 4k60 (a good, simple upscaling filter would be a 4-tap Lanczos, the ringing it causes should also help improve the perceived image sharpness before compression, but there are more advanced options if you would like to avoid that...) and manually encoding it with the VP9 codec (which is the same codec that UA-cam uses for their HD videos, so there would be much less unnecessary information loss than when transcoding between codecs) before you upload it to youtube?
Even if you can't take the time to transcode your content into VP9, you'd still theoretically get the benefit of less information being thrown away by UA-cam, since they allow 4k60 video to transcode with the highest bitrate).
One last thing to check is the bitrate of your video file right before you upload it (if you can't easily see it, it is approximately equal to 8 * VideoFileSize(In MB) / VideoLength(In Seconds)), as UA-cam now *recommends* a bitrate of up to 85 Mbps for 4k60 videos.
So if, for example, you have a 15 min video that you're uploading and the file size is less than 9.56 GB, then you are not giving UA-cam the best possible chance of keeping important image details.
PS. I still enjoy the 1440p60 content *MUCH* more than the 4k30. The increased smoothness and easier tracking are well worth the sacrifice in resolution, especially with you calling out the bandit's position in difficult to see situations!
Weird I typed in your name with mig21 next to it and boom new video. Nice!! Is it possible to get some saab j35 or j37 videos!?

With first stage flaps you actually have BLC (boundary layer control) on the Bis - but it actually reduces your max thrust.
You should try a no flare Fox 2 dogfight, it would certainly spice things up.
I wonder how the upgraded version of the F-5 - the F-20 - would do in all these F-5 battles.

I read a document that said the mig21 (it don't specifically say the version) had better instant turn and all around better maneuverability against the F4C (not the E so probably not against the Bis).
The document was from John boyd about energy maneuverability I think.
Yup and that’s why the f4 would rate fight the mig
Lovin these MiG 21 V F5 duels!
Do Gripen vs f 16 plz
The 21's big burden was its initial design concept prioritized only for Mach 2 and two inferior K-13 heatseekers. Later "facelifts" refused to remedy the initial trade-offs like avionics, radar, lack of cannon etc. Everything in the later life of the type was just afterthought. E.g. the lack of lead computing on the gunsight is a big letdown from a jet that served in many countries as the main fighter (unlike the F-5 which rather had its reputation as a trainer or secondary craft for select tasks ). Third-party avionics upgrades like the LanceR package shows that if the type had got more love in the 70s and 80s (instead of the failed Mig-23), it could have been pucker factor 9.5 for many contemporary opponents. Sad to see such wasted potential. :(
Mig 21 has lead computing no
I do not understand how missiles can just fly by your opponent without exploding.
G/S - 6:00 I'm surprised that the proximity fuse didn't go off and shred the F-5, even from several feet away. It did with yours at 16:27 so I'm wondering if the NATO and Soviet missiles have been modelled accurately where one has proximity and the counterparts don't. However, that doesn't make any sense because the Soviets reversed engineered the Sidewinder when one got lodged in a North Vietnamese MiG-17 during the Vietnam War but didn't go off.
Just a quick correction on your last statement... It was a Chinese MiG-17 and that was during the Second Taiwan Strait Incident in 1958, not the Vietnam War...
The R-60 is a very light missile and only has about 3Kg of explosive for a war head, to proximity fuse and deal any amount of damage it must be very very very close to the aircraft, preferably scoring a direct hit. Quite the contrary from the R13 or R3 with over 10Kg of explosive.
Interesting. In hands of Soviet pilots F-5 outmatched Mig-21 and Mig-23 in a dogfight. Which led to Mig-29/Su-27 development.
Also Mig-21 pilots were not taking missiles into air and were relying on built in canon and canon pods.
Так не F-5, а появление F-15 и F-16 сподвигло созданию следующих МиГов/Сушек. А под F-5 они просто выработали тактику ведения воздушного боя, противник не такой страшный был
