On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

The F-5 is an awesome little bird don't underestimate this thing, but ya I'm really enjoying this challenge thing in the last couple videos, thanks for watching guys, see you in the next one. Much Love.
Please🙏 MIG-28/F-5 VS MIG-29 Dogfight!
Older fictional VS newer real! Both flying their respective Soviet/Russian colors of their time!👍
That's why we still have them. Modernized so even more deadly
Ohhh shit that second clip scared me hard and send my phone flying
Another awesome video, Growling. Now I dare you to go up against two MIG-31s with the F-5. I bet you would get atomized everytime.
I wish someone made a F20 Tigershark
"I'm not going to defend super-aggresively" - it was at this momemt that we knew, GS screwed up.
"It went underneath, we're good"
GS vs interceptors = gold mine of last words.

Very.
I wasn't the only one that winced when he said that? Maybe a countdown too?
:) Never seems to fail! :)
2:05 … uuuuh overconfidence killed the cat?
btw definitely recommend having a cat for a pet, a miniature tiger in your home is pretty cool
The moment you explained how the R-40 is a rather primitive missile so you wouldn't defend it too aggressively, I immediately said to myself: "Well, and in a few seconds you're gonna get smoked by that thing. Would be a very typical moment on this channel..."
I just love your content man. It's always interesting to see nice aircrafts and helicopters being flown in DCS by someone who knows his stuff, while discussing combat aviation and still enjoying a nice bit of humor. That's the reason why I am a subscriber of this channel.
what was primitive about the R-40?
@@nagantm441 guidance of course
@@nagantm441 The R-40 is a relatively old missile being designed in the 1960s. It was one of the first radar guided missiles in the world. That means that its guidence, as explained by liu, wasn't very good, resulting in a lower probability of kill (PK).
@@stephan0532 for it's intended role, to shoot down bombers, it's pretty good.
Well said.
“So, it’s a pretty primitive Russian missile”

GS' collection of famous last words should be made into a compilation
That was hilarious. Great theater, the suspense was palpable. Then it happened again. Two resurrections, then victory!
Never underestimate your opponent
"Ok, listen ..."

oh my god that was hysterical!
a bit of extra information: The notch's full name is "notch filter", which some of you might already know from audio processing or other information processing. That's exactly what it is, the radar filters out the ground because otherwise it would be way too much useless data. The wider the notch filter, the more it can deal with noise and be sure what it detects is an actual fast moving object, the downside is - as shown in the video - it also filters out possible threats. Higher quality radars can therefore "get away" with using a smaller notch, making almost perpendicular moving objects more likely to be detected
This is helpful thanks 👍
Finally, a full explanation. Thx.
What makes a radar higher quality?
@@gb7418 the better ability to differentiate between ground clutter and actual moving targets in the air. Radar is a very complex stuff so whatever we say is extremely simplified. Better radar comes with more modern radar after more development is done

Mig: And you were saying? 🤣
That's not the F-5, it's the Mig-28 :)

I'm soo glad you explained the notch position got me scratchin' my head for a while. This is why this channel is the best at DCS 👌
"I get it. I understand what's going on!", you just need 3+ lives and all will be good.
Imagine someone throwing a rock at you and you go like " lol that's a primitive weapon I don't need to move".
good stuff, your videos are always fun!
You should do the US vs Russia thing again but with the rule that you can't choose the same jet twice so it's more interesting.
Do like 5 or 6 rounds so you can have different engagements.
Also make it bandit unknown so you have to choose your jet carefully.

XD just as GS said primitive I was like, oh boy that face is going to get primitived like... boom... 😅🤙💯...
Additional unpopular opinion: The Foxbat-E is my #1 most wanted REDFOR jet in DCS. There's something about the purity of a single-/limited-role aircraft that appeals to me, specifically big interceptors with big missiles. Don't even get me started about the split nozzles on the R-40 - it's such a unique design and looks badass as it boosts off the jet.
If used properly as it was intended (and not like a dogfighter .. as the Iraqui found out) its a very dangerous plane..and very tactical..as its suposed to do high speed dashes at enemy aircraft..lock with its basic but very powerfull radar.. fire , hope to keep lock and then turn arround and run away
Those impacts get me everytime.
Yeah me too
Hoping we get more content with Mig 25's , Mig 31's and SR -71's - after all, that hornet shootdown was by a foxbat who then just literally outran EVERY other fighter jet in the air - We don't get enough of these hit and run attacks from the few mach 3 ish jets out there!
Like, could Growling Sidewinder have done this against 2 human players doing hit and runs at literally top speed? I don't think he'd be able to get a solution at all on two foxbats doing mach 2.8 - mach 3 , while doing hit and run strikes......
Well played! Here's strongly hoping for more Foxbat/Foxhound/Blackbird material- it's ridiculously fascinating to see how powerful speed is, in a world today where it's forgotten(and stealth is all the rage- but stealth / merging / your usual firing angles and solutions won't give you a kill on someone at Mach 3)
It didnt outrun anyting in that occasion...just sneaked up on a US strike package...
@@slate4687 just checked the stories of Mig 25's to be sure and You are correct, while there are incidents reporded of Foxbats with insane feats like outrunning Eagles and everyone else, especially during kuwait- the particular F18 incident did not involve the foxbat using it's speed afterwards. It was other engagements where foxbats did that to the US
@@tippership yes in an occasion in 1999 an Iraqui Mig 25 crossed the no fly zone and a couple of F14Ds plus a couple of USAF F15Cs attempted to intercept it..The Tomcats fired a one AIM 54 each wich both supposedly malfunctioned and the Eagles fired AMRAAMs towards the thundering foxbat wich managed to evade the missle volley turning around and going balls to the wall
The Foxbat and Foxhound can't do Mach 3 for long. Every Foxbat that tried it wound up melting its engines and the Foxhound is hardwired to never exceed Mach 2.8. Operationally speaking, both are limited to Mach 2.5 to extend engine life. The Foxbat almost got another kill during Desert Storm, by the way. One of them managed to score a hit on an F-15C that managed to limp back home.
@@RaderizDorret foxbat/hound are limited to 2.8 for safe operating speeds. 5 mins @ mach 3.2 for the foxbat is enough to break from any engagement tho

~~Round 2~~
GS: "Ok listen, I stand by what I said, it's a primitive missile and can easily be defeated"
Foxbat: "How many times do I need to teach you this lesson, old man?"
I just love the engagements with these 'older' jet aircraft. Thanks much! :)
These F5 videos are my favorite. Such a fantastic looking aircraft. On a side note, I feel like you'd enjoy the book "Warriors" by Barrett Tillman. Its a great novel centered around the F-20.
"Warriors" is my favourite air combat novel, but Tillman's other books (The Sixth Battle," and "Dauntless") are also pretty darned good, too. Tillman certainly understands modern air combat, but you'd expect as much from the former managing editor of "Tailhook" magazine.😉
Rounding out my top three favourites are "In The Company Of Eagles," by Ernest K. Gann, about a feud between a German ace and a French pilot, and "Ace," by Spenser Dunmore, about a high scoring WWII German ace. They're all great reads, very well written, fast paced and exciting.
That first R40 knocked me out of my chair 💀
same man! Dcs can be scary as shit
R40T would also be interesting altouh they are rear aspect only heatseeking
I know the F-5 isn't the most capable fighter around, but god damn is it good looking.

4:44 GS: I think it went underneath

Lmao I actually jumped when that first missile hit home. Screen just filled with angry soviet machinery followed by loud noises.
Okay, i have one question.. foxbats being interceptors, ideally, if you merge, they should maintain their heading and accelerate out, right? It would take some time for an aircraft to turn, and if foxbats do their max speed, i.e. mach 3, they should be able to make some distance in between..
I understand that with reheat, the foxbats will be prime target for sidewinders, and those missiles do travel a lot faster.. but i was just wondering about the standard procedure.
Ya If I was in a foxbat and I merged with anything I would light the AB and fly straight.
Actually sidewinders travels around mach 2.5
Got it.. so maintaining altitude will help as well? In this video both the foxbats seemed to be down low and in thicker air, which i presume is not that good for an interceptor..?
@@slate4687 nice, i did not knew that.. thanks man..
So those cant touch things like blackbird, foxbats, etc..
@@GrowlingSidewinder Even if you could turn inside their circle, you might be able to engage with Fox 1??
“It went underneath, we’re good…”
“Ope-“
Love these intercept videos, keep em comin' sidewinder.
Super clear and easy to understand explanation of these technologies and tactical concepts using the tac view!
I know this would probably be a pain for both pilots, but I’d love to see the MiG-25 go against another plane that can’t dog fight. My first thought is the MiG-21 but I’m sure there are other planes that could fit that bill.
MiG 21s are fairly nimble.
Something like an F-106, F-111 or one of the Sukhoi swing-wings would probably work real well though.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 i immediately thought of the F-104 myself.
@@skaldlouiscyphre2453 actually the 106 is a decent dogfighter. Try F-104 for an opponent that can't turn
@@wwclay86 The F-104 is a very competent fighter itself:
"Yeah, just about everybody could out turn a -104 in the usual subsonic dogfight area. But the only birds that gave us a hard time - with the old engine! - were the F-106 and the F-8. The secret was never slowing down and using the vertical to the maximum."
"The F-100D SuperSabre, F-104C Starfighter, F-105D Thunderchief, and F-4C Phantom II were individually evaluated. All of them had difficulty trying to maneuver with the MiG simulator. The F-104, however, did the best against the highly maneuverable adversary. How did the nearly wingless “missile with a man in it” pull this off? By exploiting the 104’s speed and energy advantage. The F-105 and F-4 could have done much the same, but they were found to have very restricted cockpit visibility, particularly when the F-86 was in a position of advantage."
The F-106 might be more manoeuvrable but it's got much worse visibility, based on Operation Feather Duster I anticipate the advantage in visibility likely outweighs the advantage in agility.
A MiG-21 can dogfight, though not against a modern jet of course. But against aircraft of its era it was capable. Even though it wasn't meant to be a dogfighter, it could hold its own.
I suspect that, while harder in the MiG-21, the fight would go pretty much the same way as the one involving the F-5. If the MiG-21 can evade the BVR missiles and get to the merge, the MiG-25 is as good as dead.
All this doesn't mean it wouldn't be fun to watch a 21 v 25 video.
"I think it went underneath. It went underneath. Doh!!!!"
Perfect.
Not throwing shade... just funny as h*ll!!
You sound like Homer Simpson yelling “doh” every time you get a missile up your backside. 🤣
Good thing you didn't give up your altitude advantage there by aggressively defending that missile... I mean yeah you gave up your aircraft and your life, but dude you STILL had your altitude!!
(Sorry couldn't resist...SERIOUSLY, I LOVE these unedited videos!!)
Famous last words: "I'm not worried about this."
"We're gonna kill them now." Couldn't have been said with more authority than that moment.
2:08 well if I see an angry Neanderthal in my yard with a club and I just keep sitting in the porch I’m probably gonna get clubbed
If you keep the threat on the 3-9 line in the RWR, you're not flying in a straight line, but in an arc. If you fly a straight line, the bogey is closing with you, creating up-doppler, which can be detected. And, in the RWR, the threat vector would begin moving off the 3-9 line, either into your forward or rear hemisphere. On the other hand, when you hold the threat on the 3-9 line, and it doesn't move, you are flying on a radius with a constant range to the target, though you will be traversing an arc from the bogey's 2-to-10 o'clock (or vice versa).
Admit it....this was actually a 3v2 engagement in the early days of the Clone Wars. GS cloned himself and sent his 2 clone wingmen out ahead to see how they would die so he could formulate a plan on how to not get killed.
"The Defense Department regrets to inform you that your son is dead because he was stupid." Haha.
"Confidence tends to reflect radar, panic tends to have an IR signature."

Here is an odd dogfight I think you should do:
A dogfight between the A10 and su34. I think I'd be super interesting if it were done
i honestly think it would be interesting, since the su-34 is based off of the su-27, i wonder if it could still maneuver like the su-27
@@iLikeBigBlackMen911 yea that's what I'm thinking, if so, it would be a very good challenge for the A10, if not, it'll be a close one and be super fun to watch.
It would climb high and fast, then dive down and kill the A10. There would be no gentlemanly merge. Even if they did, Sukhoi would extend away, climb, and take full control.
I think it better to be su 25 vs a 10 because su 34 is far superior to a10
@@novahovekh9985 he already did that tho. While I agree it's closer, he already did it. I think it'll be a great challenge using the A10 against the su34

That second engagement GS, where you 'think you are good' and are going vertical...answers a question I posed to you a couple of weeks ago(and you answered it, thank you, but this demonstrates your answer visually). My question was similar to: Is it ever good to go vertical and use gravity to bleed a missile's energy? And the video just showed you GETTING SMOKED going vertical....well done. Another excellent demonstration of 'what tactics not to use'...
I remember that question, glad we were able to answer it 😆
4:50 that actually made me jump
I really enjoyed the tacview explanation at the end.
Great breakdown now I can understand what's happening in the battle.
Always humble yourself in a fight an assume the other guy is much better. Because somewhere out there, there IS that someone. No-one is greater than death.
“They really are primitive missiles”
_Famous last words…_
Back in the 70's the Soviet Russian airforce would fire a heat seeking and a radar guided missile at the same time. They claimed it was because the wanted to make it very difficult for the NATO pilots but I thought it was because they were not sure if their missiles would hit the target. Film footage shown of the two missiles being launched would show the heat seeking missile launched first then the radar guided missile second. The radar guided missile would often lock onto the heat seeking missile and chase it.
You got this backwards. Only the heat seeker can lock onto a missile. Since it is fired first this is not going to happen
Great cinematography, and thanks for the Tacview!
Dude, how many jump scares can you pack in a video? Dropped my drink on the first one. Spit the drink out on the second. I give up!
You know I just watched a video by a very big youtube gamer, who dabbles in DCS, and while generally I love this other guy's gaming videos, it made me realise that the quality of DCS videos on this channel is on another level compared to everyone else.
Capt Scott Speicher was the F-18 pilot that was shot down in Desert Storm. One of his squadron mates had the Mig 25 locked up prior to him getting shot downloaded, but the awacs didn't provide clear confirmation that the Mig 25 was bandit and not just a bogey.
LOL honestly there have been too many times where I'm completely NOT expecting a missile to hit, and then it does and it makes me jump LOL
Lol the Mig 25 can't even turn to save it's life.... literally
I like it how the Fox Bat(s) just didn't put up after burner.
Great video. Used the same tactics to notch SA-10 and SA-12 SAM sites in F19 Stealth Fighter on the C64 (1987). Otherwise you were dead.
During the Desert Storm, an Iraqi MiG-25 scored a BVR kill against F/A-18... So, don't be so hard on yourself for eating two of those primitive missiles in first two attempts...
That MiG-25 was limited to subsonic speeds due to the mass and drag of the pilot's depleted uranium balls.
there is a good video about guning the mig25 by f5 from iran, the pilot talks about it and how others didnt belive it until iraq and an irqi pilot confirmed it and the f5 gun camera had pictures of it too,its in persian language but he uses aviation language so its understandable for you watch it if u like this stuf, his kill was just like yours lead him in a left hand turn.
I must admit that the double kill on those Foxbats was by-all-the-gods-both-sacred-
and-profane _satisfying!_
