- He’s a travelin’ man who will follow you through a lonesome town. But the chart-topping Ricky Nelson might not have done the same for his own family. They were the perfect American household on TV, but did the Nelson family get along behind the scenes? How did success actually break a marriage in two and divide generations? The answers are as messy as any family drama out there, even for America’s first teen idol.

ANY Ozzie and Harriet FANS? 🤔
i am, i grew watching the reruns of the show thanks to my grandmother ( god bless her soul ) but she told me about the show and i would watch it with her and Ricky's voice was amazing.
😿😿😿😿😿🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌺🌺🌺Garden Party was his final hit. R.I.P. handsome & talented dude!!!🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
YES!
NO. HE IS WAY TO WEIRD.
Yes, I am currently watching the complete series on my Kindle. I'm on season 7 right now. Those shows were great.
"Lonesome Town" is my favorite Rick Nelson song. And in my opinion his looks could charm bark off a tree.
"Poor Little Fool" is my favorite Rick Nelson song. Check out his acting performance when he guest-starred on an episode of The Streets of San Francisco.
Traveling Man was my favorite song for a long time. Long before Garden Party was recorded, which was probably Ricky Nelson's best.
Garden Party Forever Rocks!!! Serious Soul searching!!!
Yes, I grew up with the Nelson family and definitely had a crush on Ricky. My favorite song was Hello Mary Lou. And the tune still lingers to this day.❤❤👍👵
My song: Hello Mary Lou...my husband used to sing for me. It was his favorite, I never did know that, he told my son. He died in 2013, by the way, my name is MARILU.
Me too. I enjoyed Ricky's "Garden Party" song melody and lyrics. The song evokes MANY events of that era!
Liked that song a lot
His rendition of " I Will Follow You " is nothing short of brilliant. RIP.
The whole Nelson family including Ricks kids are all hugely talented !
YES!!
Ricky was just so good looking.
@@barbarapalmer8224 His son Sam looks exactly like him !
Favourite song by Ricky is"That's all she wrote.. l love it
Yes they are! I loved the Ozzie and Harriet show and I'm Black, just sayin for those that don't think someone of another race could be interested in this, I am. I loved the Nelson's and what they represented, that All-American Christian family with good moral values and all. At least that's what the show taught us to believe in anyways, but I knew better then that. Ricky was a good looking guy with it all - the good looks, the talent, the charisma, and funny. So, I don't know why is girlfriend at that time was into Elvis when she had him, oh, wait a minute, I know why because it was Elvis, hot Elvis. LOL But seriously, this just goe to show you that you can have it all, and it may look like everything is great and all when really it's not and there's a lot of underlying issues and skeletons going on in our lives like it was with Ricky and his family. Sadly.
I loved Rick Nelson and still do ! Bless his heart may he rest in peace !
Ricky Nelson was my first heart throb! I was maybe 10 yrs old
The first record that I ever bought was by him. It was called “For You”. I was about 11 years old.
I was born on 1945 & he was my firts crush. My favorite song was "Poor Little Fool". And most of his others.
RIP, Ricky!
@@7owlfthrI was born in ‘49 with an older sister born in ‘43. All I had to see was those words “Poor Little Fool” and I was back in L.A. (ca) in our backyard (above ground plastic pool) - in summertime, with that song blaring out of the radio. What a great time! Oh what wonderful memories. We all loved that song, love Ricky, but I had forgotten it until now. Thank you for your comment!!💕🎶💃🏻❤️🎈
@@Eidann63 I still love that song!
Those beautiful eyes were piercing! A talent sadly missed! ❤
Liked him a lot . But it’s a shame he killed everyone on the plane. If what they say happened is what happened
I was born in 1945, and I was a Nelson family fan. My favorite song was garden party, because it talked about how he was treated after his "friends" rejectred him.
His fan rejected because he wanted to sing new songs.
The entertainment industry, all categories, is a cruel and mean industry. The fans don't want their idol to change.
Look at Taylor Swift & Britney Spear & how their fans act.
His fans were not happy when he played a few new songs. "1971 Rick Nelson plays the "Rock & Roll Spectacular" concert at Madison Square Garden. When he plays some newer songs, the hit-hungry audience boos. Nelson writes the song "Garden Party" about the experience, and it becomes a hit, reviving his career."
Mine was Poor Little Fool
wonderful comment
I watched Ozzie and Harriet for
Years, loved to hear Rickey Nelson sing🌹
A friend of mine from highschool, now deceased, was telling me that when he was being med-flighted back to the states in 1970, after being in a helicopter crash in Vietnam, then when his plane stopped in Alaska to refuel, Ricky Nelson came onboard to give words of appreciation and encouragement to all the casualties, which was very nice of him and showed him to be a kind, considerate person.
Another great actor artist we lost too soon. Ricky was one of a kind with an awesome voice. He may of been a big star today. Ricky was a very handsome man. Garden party was one of my favorites but there are so many others as well.
Oh, I didn't know he sang "Garden Party". Yes, I like that song. RIP Ricky Nelson.🌹❤
My Parents were dancers and toured with Ozzie and Harriet in the big band era. Rickie was 2 years older then myself. Harriet and my mom where good friends. she gave Rickie's baby crib to my mom for me. That's my connection to the Nelson family.
I m now in my 80s, thanks for the memories.
I did watch Ozzie & Harriet and just loved Ricky Nelson I saw him grow up on the show and was truly looking forward to watching him live at the hotel he was suppose to entertain at for New Years Eve. My husband and 3 young sons had just moved to Plano, Texas and were so looking forward to seeing him. We had purchased a special New Years Package with Ricky Nelson as the main feature. We were heart broken, we didn't even go that night, just stayed home and grieved his loss at home, it was so sad, what a loss!
💔💔
Years ago I went to a store and wasn't gone very long. As I was pulling in the driveway and the garage door went up Ricky's song Garden Party came on my radio. I stayed in my car and listened to the song not knowing someone was in my house from breaking in the back. God knew what was going on and He knew I would stay in my car because I loved Garden Party. The police couldn't believe what had kept me from going into my home. Going up the stairs I heard a noise when trying to get out the window. Ricky will never know he saved me from harm but God did. RIP Ricky and God bless you. He knew what would keep me safe. 🙏❤
I was born in 1951 and Ricky Nelson was my favorite ❤
@@JudithBratcher-yr8yf Yes and I'm older than you. He was a natural.
My parents were both musicians and knew Ozzie and Harriet Nelson personally. I had occasion to meet Ozzie myself in my youth when he came to our town to play a concert. It seems, as I remember, that one of his instruments had broken and he called my father to ask if he could borrow a replacement horn for this engagement. I remember clearly opening the door after the bell rang, only to see this man in the flesh that I watched on TV every week. Surreal.
I first came in contact with the Nelson's on radio when I was 6 years old. The TV show was one of my favorite shows.
My Mother loved Ricky! But as for me…his sons, Gunner & Matthew will ALWAYS have my heart! I adored Tracey and I will always be a huge fan of hers as well!
Tracy Nelson had a lifetime of health problems.
My favorite was Fools Rush In. God, I loved that song. He was a gorgeous man and easy going. Him, Jim Croce - we lost them way to soon. I dream of how far they could have gone
I was able to see Rick Nelson perform in October before he died. I was sitting with friend by where he walked out to go on stage. He shook my hand . I was born in 1943 and was a big fan of the TVShow and Ricks music. May he rest in peace.
I loved watching that show, may God bless Rick's family ❤
I was born in 1946 and Ozzie and Harriet was one of the shows that I loved.
Rick Nelson was my heartthrob growing up--I was devastated hearing about his death. He will always be the best looking teen idol!!!
ABSOLUTELY! Rick was YUMMY!!
Except for Elvis
yep, best looking
@donnafraunfelter1554~~I hear ya~~I too was so very saddened when he died~~Take care now~~😮💨😮💨😮💨💗💗💗💗💗
I liked him more than Elvis. 💜
I would faithfully watch Ozzie and Harriet each week, bored with the cheesy stories, but transfixed by Ricky's musical numbers at the end of many an episode.
Only later in my life did I learn his Dad was a famous bandleader, with a radio program before my time.
Lllllllll😢l😢😢😢😢h65😊,
Same here. I was probably 5 or 6 years old when I and my family watched the show. My little friends and I watched faithfully every week. When we were older and Ricky started his music career, we were all gaga over him- all of my little girlfriends and I wished we were older and could go to his shows. We crushed on him for the longest and time!
Yes, we grew up watching “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”. I thought they were the perfect family. In later years, I was confused by Ricky wanting to be called Rick and distancing himself from his musical hits. The song ‘Garden Party’ did help explain some of it. I had no idea of his turmoil and drug use. Shame.
Harriet Hilliard was the "girl singer" for the Ozzie Nelson band. That's how Ozzie and Harriet met. That band had at least one number one hit. When Ricky first got into the music business, his dad was at most of his recording sessions as sort of the executive producer.
I loved watching the show for the same reason. Couldn’t wait until the end of the episodes.☺️
It’s why the first record I ever bought was by Ricky Nelson.
I was crazy about Ricky growing up 💜
"You Are the Only One" is probably my favorite one.
He would close his eyes a lot while singing, probably due to shyness. And I did the same thing, and my mom would commit about me acting like Ricky. 💜
We saw Ricky in concert a week before he died, he had such a beautiful voice.
Being born in 1950 everything seemed to be a certain thing that it never was, but the illusion was a goal for what America stood for, it' values, it's hopes and dreams. We watched all of these family related programs not just the Nelsons. My family broke apart when I was 6 and it was not easy, but you learned to take the good with the bad and keep aiming for the better.
Spent time watching the TV show along with the other family shows then. Loved most of Rickys songs. I still have vinyl LPs of his and still play them.
What a shame. He was so talented, and had so much to live for.
I watched reruns of Ozzy and Harriet. I also loved, the brothers Matthew and Guner their music was the anthem for me...thank you so much.
I remember my mother having a RCA turntable in the early 60s and her having a bunch of Ricky Nelson 45s . I never had one favorite until Ricky brought out Garden Party, I'm 63 years old now and I still listen to Ricky Nelson and still watch reruns of Ozzie and Harriet .
My favorite Ricky Nelson tune is “Garden Party “. I knew that television show existed, but I didn’t watch it much. I guess I was too young at the time to get into it.
Yes I watched Ozzie and Harriet as a kid. My favorite Ricky Nelson song was Fools Rush In.❤
I had only one crush on a singer in my youth and it was Ricky Nelson I never thought too much of Elvis Presley but I did like his movies and I was always questioned about my choice of Ricky over Elvis but Ricky was my favorite my whole life and I bought all his albums! So you can say I am a big fan of Ricky! I am so sorry that his family had too go through such pain and troubles because of drugs, his talent was so strong and I am so glad that you made this video for us too see! Thank you!❤
I had tickets to see his twin sons ' Nelson '.. but it was back around the covid days and it fell through.. if you ever get a chance to see them in concert ( if you were a Rick Nelson fan )...you'd love it.. I hope I get another chance to see them someday
I did get to see them. Was it ever an enjoyable show. Would love to see Them again. Gunner and Mathew have all of the charm that Rick had. Keep the music coming
@@lizodonnell7131 Exactly.. thankyou
Saw them twice. Both good shows.
I just recently said we need to bring back more family shows and that was one of my favorites as a child. Thank you for sharing.
Excellent coverage - thank you
I met he once, and he was a very nice gentleman.
Every morning and evening always listening to his music one of my favorites “Traveling Man and Poor little poor””” 😢
I met Ricky Nelson at the Solano County Fair. Nice man. He saw my 68 GTO & talked about the cars he and David had as teenagers. Imagine taking Rick Nelson for a ride in your car. I was hoping every person I knew would see me. I was watching TV when A reporter came on with a special alert... I will never forget staring at the screen watching the news of Rick's plane crashing. May all his family Rest In Peace. Thank You for the wonderful entertainment.
I love Ricky Nelson .. My favorite song off his was “Garden Party”.. RIP❤️
I watched them as a kid 1960's. My favorite Ricky Nelson song was Garden Party. Love that song. I also like the one he sang with Dean Martin in Rio Bravo. Those were the days!!!
Lol I loved Ricky soooo much at 3 I really thought I would marry him !! Those eyes was all it took lol ❤❤❤
I can understand why women loved his eyes that were pure blue with a bedroom -eyed stare during his performances. Was I jealous? You bet I was because at that time I could not even attract girls that looked like Zelda Gilroy. Old people will know what I mean.
Yep, I was born in 1959 and watched the show with my Mom. I was small but loved the stories.
My very beloved tv family all my life. I adored this show and still do. The Nelsons were and always will be in my heart. I want the family and children to know how much we loved their family and wish for them to be healthy and happy. ❤
Ricky did not die 40 years ago, he died on New Years Eve December 31, 1985. I remember that night well when the news came over the radio in the car. math is hard.
You are correct I remember that night as well.
Remember the night well, was in TEXAS that year. Did not like driving past the area heading north. 38 years ago. Can not believe it. RIP RICK
I was young when i started watching The Nelsons. My favorite song is POOR LITTLE FOOL followed by GARDEN PARTY. :(
I saw him in Vancouver and he gave a autograph to my friend , Love the family
I remember writing to him and getting a signed picture back. I was 10.
Absolutely I remember Rickie Nelson! Loved him as a teen!
Also loved the Ozzie and Harriet Show!
As a teenager in the 50’s, I had a crush on Elvis at 13, but I was knocked out by Ricky! I still think he is the best looking musician, singer, songwriter ever.
Ricky was so bland. Elvis had that dangerous sneer & sex appeal.
Ricky’s eyes were all the sex appeal he needed. Elvis had to work it.
Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson were both handsome and talented musicians.
No way ! Elvis was better handsome.
@@stevemorris6790 Elvis had good ole' boy looks. Rick wasn't quite as greasy.
My first record was Poor Little Fool, a great favourite. The family show was never shown in Great Britain, so sadly we never saw the best of the show!
Hello, Marylou was one of my favorites. Really liked his voice and style. I grew up in the 1940's and 1950's, and was in Ricky's generation. I enjoyed Ozzie and Harriet from 1954 (when we got a TV set!) on. Nice show - the only one I can think of where everyone played themselves!
I watched that when I was a kid all the time I loved it that's when they had some good shows back then not the reality BS shows they got today The definitely going backwards
Of course my family watched. Loved the show. Those were the good old days. Garden party is sadly haunting.
Thanks, brings back memories.
I loved the Ozzy and Harriet show! Watching Ricky grow up, actually growing up with Ricky over the TV screen! ❤
Loved Rick!!!!!!
👋Big Wave Neil😊 Agree with you 💯0%, a memorial combining QEII with PP & a couple Corgis @ their feet representing exactly who held the Commonwealth in good stead for those 70+ years...and yes right there in the center of London!!! 👍👏
Great stuff ❤
Why can't you fix your heading ????
They're referring to Ricky's wife.
Because they’re not talking about his mother they’re talking about his wife.
@@anniedoran6126 the way that it reads is he died 40 years ago then she.... Clarification could had made it better... Like he died and his siblings said ... Or his mother said or his wife said... I'm not a complete idiot but they don't really clarify so when you read The heading you think that you're reading something and then it changes in the narrative..that's my point... A simple fix... I got 3 different answers from the comments so it proves it's not clear
I was in California when it came on the news. I was supposed to fly out that day. Heard he was killed in a plane crash. I called my parents and asked if I could fly home the next day. (I was on Christmas vacation) They postponed my trip by a day. I'm not good with flying and hid accident scared me. Haven't flown since before 9/11.
🙏🕊️❤️
Just a friendly point- It hasn't been quite 40 years since he passed.
I also haven't been on an airplane since 9/11. I'm too afraid to fly.
This was very well done! I can’t believe that Ricky’s wife is the sister of Mark Harmon, who, I believe, is one of the best TV actors of all time!
And Mark Harmon was one of the sexiest men on the planet (deservedly so). He's had a successful career and life w/his wife, actress Pam Dawber.
They also have a sister named Kelly who was gorgeous. She was a model.
@@isabellind1292 I remember him as a football player firstly.
and their father was Tom Harmon who played football for the University of Michigan and won the Heisman Trophy in 1940.
@@jimoathout7543 Wow! They'd never run out of things to talk about when the entire family got together. Football, acting, modeling, singing...oh and Kelly probably increased the sales of "Tic Tac's" across America, lol!
Great video 👍
My husband and I were at the hotel Rick and his band were to perform at the night his plane crashed. I remember someone finally announcing he wouldn’t be arriving, but they didn’t tell us what had happened. We found out on New Year’s Day, just as most of the world did and it was quite shocking and sad! He always seemed so likable and happy go lucky. Terrible for his family to lose him that way!
I did grow up watching Ozzy & Harriet in B&W, wow I’m old. Went to a garden party, was the song I remember him for. Sad how his daughter found out he was dead, driving on the Freeway and the radio announced his passing. What a crap shot.😮
Loved all of them😊❤
I grew up watching Ozzie and Harriet. Ricky Nelson was my teen idol.
Love RN and those baby blues of his. Also "Garden Party" is my favorite song of his. I also give kudos to Ozzie for rejecting an invitation to join the Illuminati.❤
I don't know about the Illuminati but "Garden Party" was my favorite of Rick's songs.
"Garden Party" refers to a show that RN was part of at Madison Square Garden. He was bood etc. for performing his old hits. He wrote the song, and recorded it and made a lot of money from it, because of that Mad. Sq Garden experience. Revenge is sweet.
Very handsome young man with a creamy soft voice.....
I was a fan, weekly lying on floor, face in
hands, swooning over Ricky. 😂💕😜
Remember some of Tabloids on marriage.
I was born in 1951. That was a great tv show. Ricky could sing
My father attended high school with Tom Harmon. Years later, after my family also had moved to SoCal, l BEGGED my dad to contact his old buddy so that l could meet Rick when the star married Harmon's daughter. Sadly, Pops refused.😢
Ricky Nelson died on December 31st, 1985. That's not quite 38 years ago...
It was sad because he was about to remarry.
Watched every episode ! couldn't wait till the end of the show would end in a song ! Summers at the shore in NJ listening to those great songs !
Ricky Nelson was my first childhood idol crush. My favorite songs of his are Travelin’ man, Poor little fool, and Garden Party. I only saw the Ozzie & Harriett Show so I could see Rick Nelson who always sang a song in the show. Such a tragic loss in the end. Now his twin sons keep their father’s memories alive performing their own songs and their father’s song catalog. 🙏❤💕🩷🌹
I had a crush on Ricky Nelson. Thought he was the cutest guy on earth
Ditto!
My former co-worker/friend’s mom was a Harman. It’s how the family (Harmon) spelled their name before coming to North America. Kristin Harmon was Ricky’s first wife, and my friend was Kristin’s (and Mark and Kelly Harmon’s) 2nd cousin. And late sculptor/artist, Jack Harman was my friend’s uncle, and he was (obviously) also related to Kristin who was also a very talented artist. Jack is best known for creating the sculpture of Queen Elizabeth II on a horse in Ottawa, but he was also from BC. My friend looks and sounds very much like Tracy Nelson, Ricky and Kristin’s daughter.
Never missed an episode…❤❤❤
Yes I grew up watching them on tv. Just loved them. I could sense Ricky’s shyness. Loved his sweet voice. I believe the whole family was wonderful and don’t care about their faults.
I was born in 1947 and I remember vividly watching the Ozzie and Harriet Show. My parents thought it was a very good representation of a healthy family. One of my friends bought me a 45 album of his called Wake Up Little Susie and my heart was lost. We put these people on pedestals that we forget they are also human beings and normal people just like we are. We need to stop putting Hollywood people on a pedestal because they are no better and no worse than some of us
Loved the show and Rick’s songs. But I think Wake Up Little Susie was by the Everley brothers.
Travelin' Man, Fools Rush In, Hello Mary Lou Goodbye Heart, Garden Party, I'm Walkin," Poor Little Fool, Never Be Anyone Else But You For Me, It's Late.
Perhaps my favorite TV show as a small child. Garden Party
I was a fan
Thank you
Nice encapsulation. No one ever believed it was all hunky dory behind the scenes of that popular show but it was nice to fantasize that it could be. We loved that fantasy, played out not only in this show about a real life family but also by Leave it to Beaver. Even My Three Sons and the Andy Griffith Show about single parent families (led by dads, rather than what was really more common in reality, moms) somehow managed to create this same feel. It was escapist entertainment that comforted us and created a buffer between what we dreamed life could be and what it really was. I think the ones who had it hardest were families like the Nelsons who lived under the pressure of having to seem like they had it all together even when they didn’t. I’m sorry for them about that.
I loved Rickey. In the tv show he was so much fun to watch. Later I loved his music especially Traveling Man. It’s so sad to hear about their real lives and how famous families let it go to their heads.
Yes, Traveling Man and later, Garden Party❤❤❤❤
loved watching the show as a little girl! it was a simpler time! good clean family shows
I think Garden Party. But there were several. TY fir sharing info.
Wtf is up with the title? He died, her child rumors?
Rick Nelson could have brought us great music for decades if he hadn’t died. 😢
Big fan here!
Why did you make him look like that in the thumbnail lol
I always felt Ricky was Better looking than elvis
I never ever watched Ozzie or Harriet as I didn't grow up in America but I did love Ricky Nelson singing his songs. I liked Garden Party. And all his songs. He had that snicker of his lip like Elvis and so he was a very good looking man.
I worked in a club he performed at about two weeks before the accident. It was such heartbreaking news. He was very nice to all of us. I had always loved his music so I felt so fortunate to meet him. We chatted about his role in the movie, “The Wackiest Ship in the Army” and how much my family loved it.
Born in 1948 & was a true fan of the show. It was a family event to watch the Nelson's.
My favorite song was "Hello Mary Lou."
I think most girls in that time had a crush on Ricky RIP
Could not wait till the show came on tv. Even to this day, I still listens to all of his music. I even ordered the series. As they say, the good die young. Rick is now in singers heaven.😇 RICK, you may be gone but NEVER FORGOTTEN. Always a fan.

For some reason, I only recall seeing it once several years ago. Other than that I don't even recall it being listed on the program guide, but I've heard of it.
Loved the show.
I watched the show in the 80s on Nick at Night. I loved that show! I never knew how Ricky died, though.
