Tape measures and strings are the main tools needed to lay out a fence. Fine Homebuilding editors Justin Fink and Andy Engel show how to establish a square corner and mark the ground for fence posts.

Nice video. Always wondered how to make sure your square very nice way.
Nice!!! “ Your talking about the tape measures right”. That’s good stuff
Excellent video short sweet right to the point
Wait, when he walked out 16' to the left...how do you know that line is parallel to the house? At :55 seconds you told him to go to the right up the hill just a little bit. Then, even when you did the 6 x 8 x 10 and it still forms a 90 degree angle, BUT the L shape could be rotated to the right if he went too far up hill to the right. Right?
‘You’re taking about the tape measures right?’ I think that joke went over his head
Love the square measurement. Great math boys.
Thanks so much! Looked through 6 videos before you guys showed me to do a right angle
Nice Princess Bride reference there: "I've got a secret though....I'm not left handed." "My name is Inigo Mantoya, you killed my father...prepare to die." Good explanation of the 3/4/5 method, it works great for getting square corners.
Thanks for the great info
Nice job ❤
피타고라스 정리군요. 직각 삼각형~!. 이집트인들이 사용햇었죠 ^^ good~!
privacy for the woods. nice...
I may have missed the 3/4/5 in math class, but I didn’t miss @ 2:18!
That natural rock wall KICKS ASS!
Great, great info. in this video. I'm watching a few UA-cam videos before putting up a picket fence in front of my house. Too bad those wood pricks have infested your comments section.
Do you follow the slop of the ground or make it level ignoring the slop?
Always follow the slope of the ground. If you make it level, One end of the fence could be too high or the other end may be super low to the ground.
I love the Amish guy... Great video
What would happen if it was 9 1/2 ft in this yard? Is this only helpful for a 2 sided fence
The formula (which can easily be done on a calculator) is a^2 + b^2 = c^2. Works with any numbers.
thank
is it square in relationship to the house or does that matter here ?.
Yes that would matter cause it might look crooked so to speak with relation to the house. The older gentleman in the video knows his stuff so I’m sure he took that into account he just probably forgot to mention it.
How did you determine where the corner would be?
Oh my goodness that's the most practical use of the Pythagorean theorem I have ever seen 😲📐👌🏻🫶🏻 thank you
Do you have to measure 6 feet on the long run or can you measure it on the short run?
They had the triangle upside down. You would want to use the longer side of the formula on the longest run.
"There is something i must tell you"
"Tell me"
"I'm not left handed"
“I’m homosexual...also I once killed a man.”
0:59 that got dirty real quick.
2:24🤣🤣🤣🤣
I did it myself with the Woodglut plans. I think this is the best way to find out how to build it.
Pythagoras bitches!
Justin hubba hubba.
the way they make the square don't make sense....if any of the lines you are coming off of isn't straight to begin with then how can it even work out right ...you may have a comer but whois to say the fence will even be straight...any one of them could be crooked...you need to straight lines to work of off...and they don't show how they got that
Yes this was exactly my thought when they made the 90 degree square, how do they make the first line straight?
Jacktards
The first line would be set to your property line. But in this case of the video you can have it wherever you want. This was just a section of fence for privacy in the middle of a yard. He just eyeballed it....
This is the part I am looking for. Asq x Bsq =Csq great. A can be any where to start but how to determine B so that C can be found? How is A and B kept straight?
arn hoI made it by myself thanks to woodprix website.
A lot of unnecessary work for a 16 x 8 fence. It must take you guys a year to fence a whole yard
The measurements would be better done in metric, so the I guess the Pythagorean square should be something like 30 cm x 40 cm x 50 cm. Those are small dimensions however so tricky to measure.
Why would the measurements be better in metric?
It a fence not carpentry
I can made it by myself thanks to woodprix website
I've found great handbook on woodprix website. Good solutions for everyone I think
Great to see that woodprix has new instructions to save my money and energy to build it.
