Thanks a million guys they just dropped my framing package this morning your method simplified it fantastically. It’s been 40 years since I laid out, I feel like I owe you a beer…lot of great tips (got to buy another 100 ft tape that was awesome)
We are building a post frame building. Thanks to this Chanel we aren’t building a pole barn. Just bought lumber and starting on leveling and making a pad. These videos are amazing. 102x42 wish us luck.
I remember back in 89 going over this with the head of our survey department at Burgess and Niple as a new hire. I think we did 4 or 5 practice layouts before going out to a job site. He didn't want anyone using the laser layout system who couldn't do a manual layout. Batteries on that old equipment would always die when you needed it the most. Those ni-cad bricks weighed a ton when you had to make sure you had enough power for a full day. Great video
Very timely find for me. I just picked up a 70 x 30 shelter kit from an auction yesterday (12/29/2022), and I would like to mount the support posts on Sonotubes. I am looking forward to learning exactly where and how to place those tubes and posts; pre-fabricated steel isn't nearly as forgiving as wood. This channel is THE best instructional place for us unranked amateurs to learn how to do it. Thanks for making these videos!
I was lucky enough to be taught how to do layout with batter boards and string line when I was first in the biz 30 years ago. Set batter boards 5 ft outside of building lines. Buildings are always right on with square. It's amazing how many builders don't know how to do it this way.
This is a gold mine of information!! On a previous project me and my younger brother were to put up a lean-to shade area next to our barn and in our attempts to make the square posts straight and equidistant all around was almost impossible and we barely managed to make it square... B U T! After watching this video and going step by step we have flawlessly thrown up 8 posts for another shade project and it’s such a relief to have this kind of video for help. You definitely deserve a Nobel prize for this masterpiece of a video
When the batteries die or you forget your calculator, the '6' '8' '10' ratio works too. You are a very good teacher, and make layout look easy, thanks for your informative videos.

The video was really well done and very informative and I appreciate your expertise and the time you took to make it. Thanks!
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Your help has been immense in helping us layout our deck. I am teaching 3 teenage boys how to lay out a deck or building and asked them to watch this video before we start. Well done.
Thank you! I was having trouble squaring the corners of my 12x24 deck layout using string and the 345 rule. After watching this I bought two identical 100' tape measures and easily squared it up.

I went back to check what was said and it was 68' 5 5/8" so I stand corrected.... the app calculation is good. good video. I'm planning a garage and will build on a monolithic slab and this video is helping me understand how to ensure my slab will be square. Thanks!
Awesome video man! About to build my first pole barn in a couple day and wanted to see what was the most efficient way to do so and I found it! also thanks for the knot for the string line, I always fight it. Great job on this video. I have seen your other videos on this subject and they are good to, but I like how thorough you are in this one. Thanks! An idea for another video might be how the site is graded before you do the layout. Fill vs. virgin soil, problems with rocky soil, things of that nature. I am toying with the idea of doing that part myself for my DIY project, but I need to research more about that topic.
This was so informative. Simply explained. Great job. I low-key want to work for you. If you ever expand, and in need of workers, look no further. Thanks for the great content!

Glad to see the new video. It seemed like the last few have been a little less on the building and more on the behind the scenes material, which is good as well.
Kyle ALWAYS enjoy your vids but we just put our poles at the 40 x60 then adding the perlins stops us from having to trim the metal off on corners and gables,,just the way we do it...have a great and safe year...be blessed
Great explanation on the process. It would be awesome to see a detailed explanation on setting brackets and some more info on the story pole. I did see the story pole video, but still confusing about the grade measurement.
I was assigned this video for a carpentery class. It helped me to better understand how to use the Pythagorean theorem in a practical context, so thank you for that. A lot of the terminology you used is still foreign to me, but I learned a couple new words here. The elevation grading was confusing to me, so it may have been illuminating to see more of the project coming together.

I am sure you could save hours if you went metric, 65' and 5 5/8" - asking for trouble. Still, you seem to get there in the end. Look forward to seeing more. Brilliant.
Excellent layout explanation. I plan on linking this for my construction class because of the tips shown (Pythagorean triangle, height setup of batter boards, string adjustments etc). I’ll have to tell them to ignore your dimensions though as we work in mm in Australia.

Thank you Guy’s for taking the time & effort to make this Video to help others! I have watched your Video a few different times and have learned a lot from it 👍 Again, Thank You!!
I do it a little differently but basically the same. We chalk lines right on the ground, but your right that if there's slope, the measurements will be off. But I do foundations, not post frame, and the dig is flat. You only really need to measure one diagnal, and then it's just lengths of walls after that. There's no doubting the accuracy here though, your money! Nice clear instruction Kyle!
@@psidvicious Math never lies. I'm not discounting double checking. On more complication building sites, you have to pick just 2 lines to square. Always pick the largest portion of the building, and then everything else gets measured off of that.

Quick story about steel tapes. Was building an athletic track for a High School and the survey that was provided was very minimal. Had to pull 100ft tapes often. After we set our forms for drain system we had to get a survey check before pouring. Turns out the shrinkage and expansion of a steel tape with 20 degrees Celsius (68F) of variance is enough to fail you when the tolerances is 2cm (¾ inch). Great vid btw

The devil is in the details with the metal siding/trim, and your vids have really helped me develop a solid game plan. You do great work, and also don't take yourself too seriously. Hope you keep making videos.
Great vid. How do you make sure your first line is in line with the direction you want the final layout pointed? Looked like you guys arbitrarily set two points to create that first side
Excellent!! Thank you for reaffirming the importance of batter boards at grade. Wasted a day of my life chasing square with batter boards set just any old way. With the rise between them adding a not insignificant length on the string line. In this video the columns are 8 ft. on center. Is your column spacing whether its 8', 10' , 12' on center determined by anything specific or simply what lays out the most accurately inside the structures dimensions? Have a great day! And keep it up. One day I'll be able to cut steel trim corner details as clean as you do.
Thanks for the step by step. Even if you know how to do this, its good to get some pro tips and reminders, for those of us that don't do it all the time. Thanks dudes! I am laying out a 36’x36’ pole barn and getting that diagonal correct was an issue to get for me to get until I downloaded that app! Thanks again
Great video, would really like a handy tip on how to measure the diagonal measurements when your by yourself, I am having trouble with this because the batter boards are about a foot away from where the 2 lines meet on each corner.
You guys did a great job breaking down the steps, really enjoyed watching!!! How tight can you pull your stings siring that knot, curious for those windy days, and long pulls…. Definitely gonna try to burn that one in the brain tho it’s quick and seems to hold on well
I'm not sure what was worse, the tape getting painted or the way it was "accidentally" dropped right in the way of the paint! 😂 Your job site humor is on point. Really great video on building layout though. Keep up the great work!
Great video. Question. When you mark your 8’ for columns do you center the pier on the string line or do you pull it back 2-3/4” from the line to put the center of the pier to the center of the column?
you do a great job with your videos. since you have quick, easy ways of doing things I was wondering why you don't burn an 1 1/2" when you lay out the post location so that you don't have to keep subtracting that 1 1/2"
Have You tried the stabila LA180L automatic layout station? I use one for doing plates on cut up framing jobs, basements, and decks. Thing is awesome and worth the money, layout can be done by myself in short order
NO!!!! You painted the tape measure! Anyways, great explanation. I've heard you say this before, but I think theres only one video showing it... Can you provide another video explaining the concrete pillars - how to determine the height at the top of them, the setting of the grade board, and then finally pouring of the concrete floor over those concrete pillars? I'm getting ready to start my own project and it would be great to see another explanation before I start it. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Sooooo, I was doing it the hard way (marking my points on the string and looking for those marks) and only using one tape measure. Thanks guys!
Such precision. I'm not in the building trade but I love watching perfection.
Thanks dudes! I am laying out a 36’x36’ pole barn and getting that diagonal correct was an issue to get for me to get until I downloaded that app! Thanks again
This is the best batter board video! Out there!
Thank you for recording and posting this educational video.
Great tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to produce it.
Lol so you do like Greg's way better on the string knot. Excellent work guys.
Great demonstration. I’m sure I’ll be using it in my next Build
Still can't understand how anyone likes their hammer in the back. Love the channel, just found it. Keep up the great videos.
Great video, would really like a handy tip on how to measure the diagonal measurements when your by yourself, I am having trouble with this because the batter boards are about a foot away from where the 2 lines meet on each corner.
You're great man! Everything is strongly professional! My compliments!
You guys did a great job breaking down the steps, really enjoyed watching!!! How tight can you pull your stings siring that knot, curious for those windy days, and long pulls…. Definitely gonna try to burn that one in the brain tho it’s quick and seems to hold on well
Excellent video! Thank you for taking the time to share it.
The best builder on UA-cam 😍🤘🏼
Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge, this is the best channel on you tube
Dude, your videos are really awesome both in content and video quality.
I'm not sure what was worse, the tape getting painted or the way it was "accidentally" dropped right in the way of the paint! 😂 Your job site humor is on point. Really great video on building layout though. Keep up the great work!
Hello from Auckland, New Zealand...
is there a video build series to go with this layout video? I try to watch all your videos, so I can try and prep. for my own building.
Yes I have pne
Accuracy counts. Remember, two wrongs don't make a right but three rights make a left! 😆 Love the videos..great information!
