New Wave is a loosely defined music genre that encompasses pop-oriented styles from the late 1970s and the 1980s. It was originally used as a catch-all for the various styles of music that emerged after punk rock, including punk itself. Later, critical consensus favored "new wave" as an umbrella term involving many popular music styles of the era, including power pop, synth-pop, ska revival, and more specific forms of punk rock that were less abrasive. It may also be viewed as a more accessible counterpart of post-punk.

@@StellasEncounter , New Wave is a term grouping many after-punk genres : poppy, more electronic, dark wave, new romantics, . . . But punk music made the revolution.
We cannot define "New wave", the term is too vast. It was all these new music styles that created this wave. And yes, Cocteau Twins and so many other bands are for me part of New Wave as well as Siouxsie, Echo, and so many others. But Spandau, Duran, Depeche Mode, . . . are part of the New Wave too.
Nobody said you're Pop and got synth', then you're New Wave. And within New Wave so many bands switched from one genre to another (and another).
@@StellasEncounter , I started the 80's (decade of New wave) when I was 16, and in clubs, on radios, in concerts, fanzine/musical press, . . . you could see , watch, read, . . . all these sub-genres on the same line-up or playlists.
New wave/post punk is pretty much artsy punk music you can dance to lol Fun music.

As a child of the 80s I love this content. I still got a soft spot for some of the College Rock bands of the time like Oingo Boingo. New Wave did seem to fit a lot of bands that were key board /synth bands of the day, DEVO, Berlin, Missing Persons, very early Depeche Mode.

NewWave bands brought me back to the pop music scene in the early '80s, which this Boomer had left in the mid-70s... Most of the bands mentioned here -- esp TalkingHeads, ElvisC, Blondie, Police -- were huge favs of mine.
Stella's clear discussion left me for the first time understanding that the label "NewWave" was a marketing tool to get around the anti-capitalist Punk movement prejudices!

New wave was a bit of a lazy media label that kind of put together bands that actually had nothing to do with each other but allowed record companies to market them, at least the more commercial ones, as a trend. In America it was more the neon, skinny ties, bouncy punk-power pop of the likes of The Cars and Blondie that I always think of when new wave is mentioned. In UK maybe the likes of Elvis Costello or Squeeze, but I totally refuse to put post punk acts such as Joy Division, Siouxie, PIL, The Fall, Echo and the Bunnymen, even Talking Heads, Suicide and Television in America, as New Wave. Several if not all of those bands actually hated that monicker.
Huzzah! Funny, had just spun up a new wave list, but will switch to this goodness. A moment of silence for the passing of the beloved mole :)

Thank you for mentioning Pere Ubu, one of my favourite bands from that era. I was about twenty when New Wave came along, and I separated that genre from post-punk by considering pop bands like Blondie, Elvis Costello and Talking Heads as New Wave, but bands with less commercial appeal, like Pere Ubu, early Scritti Politti, PiL, the Pop Group, etc as Post-Punk. I certainly regarded the New Romantics as New Wave, and I remember how the music press derided them mercilessly: all style and no music.
Pere Ubu are more post-punk I agree, they are also mentioned in the post-punk video. Just wanted to mention them a bit with Devo here for proximity, because I loveeee Pere Ubu too!
The new wave term is perfect . It doesn’t mean the bands played similar music to each other, it just means what it says, all these bands were different from what was going on at the time, thus the “ new wave.” Pretentious people choose to take issue with the term. Anyway, great show! Viva Echo & The Bunnymen, Blondie, Siouxie and The Banshees, Nick Lowe, The Smiths, Psychedelic Furs, and the criminally under-rated band Felt, from England.

In the 80s the small record shop (in Germany) I regularly went to had 2 big subsections: heavy metal and new wave. And under "new wave" they put everything from actual new wave and goth to industrial, alternative rock, indie pop and even hardcore punk and crossover thrash. So yeah, indeed a broad umbrella term.

Another great video from Stella. I'm a huge fan of new wave because i started buying records around 1983 when i was 13. MTV was huge and i did so much experimentation with my hair and makeup based on these artists. I loved the androgyny too. I'm gonna try to get tickets to see the Culture Club, Howard Jones and Berlin tour. And you better believe I'll be decked out in 80's clothes, makeup and heavily moussed hair!

Your production quality really is quite good, I love the intros. This music was the soundtrack of my youth, and will be forever in my d.n.a. Most of it still sounds good to me, even though my music tastes generally lean into heavier territory these days. But there’s do denying the high levels of songwriting from that era. Pre-MTV the Cars, Blondie, and the Police were already having hits and getting a lot of attention here. Even without MTV (which most definitely helped), a lot of these acts would have still been successful because the songs were really good. Thank you.
80s are perhaps the greatest era of pop music!

NU WAVE was more classified in the 80s to be Alternative with actual groups from the 60s as The Velvet Underground and the Ramones being parent groups. But I was very fortunate being born in 1969 and seeing and actually experience it at concerts and dance clubs!
Most musicians dont really like referring to or placing themselves into genres, but new wave was more like a mentallity rather than a musical genre. In my opinion almost everything we listen to nowadays can be traced in this period of new wave. I like your videos, they are generally to the point, but no, in this case you missed dealing with one of the most important periods of music so far. *Edit:* I listen to many kinds of music and artists; Im not prejudiced towards any kind of music or artist. This, I feel, gives me the freedom to see and regard music as one single entity. I think that ABBA's "dancing queen" is one of the best dance songs ever made, and at the same time one of my top10 favourite albums of all times is Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works. I can listen to Madonna and M.Jackson with the same ease I can listen to KVB, Ride, Dave Brubeck, J.Maus, Chameleons, Tashaki Miyaki, Jim Noir, Dan Deacon, Alexander Robotnick, the Clean, Mogwai, Mouse on Mars, Giant Sand, No Age, JJ, Triffids, Belly, Stereolab, Saint Etienne, East River Pipe, I. Xenakis, Schneider TM, etc., just to mention some well known ones.
To me these few years of New Wave are the most important, most influential and most interesting musically.

@@StellasEncounter True, and as I said I like your videos. Ive seen all your videos and so I think I can tell when you cover a kind of music you like and when you dont like this music. Thing is, and that's just my opinion, you shouldnt allow your taste in music to affect the way you cover the subject you choose to cover. I think this is what happened on this video.
Many believe that New Wave is not as serious, to put it this way, as other kinds of music. This completely wrong. This era (from ~1977 to 1984/85), and excluding classical music, is perhaps the most influential in the history of music, and a large part of it belongs to New Wave. If you consider the time span from this era (say +40 years), there's *no other era* in music where you can put on a vast amount of records 40 years later, and still sound as fresh as new. I think I can prove that most of these records will be New Wave ones.

@@papertoyss I do love New wave music, despite the fact that many hit wonders get a bit stale and cheesy after repetitive listens. but you might be right my taste tends towards more alternative overall. I'm not sure if my taste had affected how I approached this video. New wave is not as serious/grim as post-punk etc, but it's very influential as you said!
@@StellasEncounter Yeah, that's what I thought too. I was so into shoegaze once uppon a time that I thought it was the best thing ever happened to music. I was wrong. I somehow re-evaluated my standards in music, I searched for my influences and roots in music and found them all in this era. Large part of them undeniably and irrevocably belong to New Wave.
Of course you're young and you probably (probably!!) lost the opportunity to actually be influenced by so many different kids of music as we got to listen to back then. This, if true, and imho, is unfortunate, but it's not too late to experience diversity.
If that's the case, my advise would be "open your mind", *literally.* Listening to music with an open mind, you enter a whole new colourful, aromatic Universe.
It's about time a UA-camr gave some exposure to alternative music of all genres and eras. Thanks! You'd probably be an appreciative member of the audience on the weekly karaoke night which I attend here in New Jersey, because my performances are heavy on Post-punk, New Wave, and Grunge. 😀🎤
Hispanic countries also had a huge new wave (or new wave inspired) movement, all across spain and Latin America during the 80's and 90's, although they wouldn't refer themselves as new wave, in spain the movement was refered to as "la movida madrileña (the madrid movement)" in Argentina as "rock nacional (national rock)" and in mexico and several other latin countries as " rock en español or rock en tu idioma (hispanic rock or rock in your language)" this later one began as a campaign to sell more alternative hispanic music to compete against the english market.
A common theme amongst these bands (specially in Latin America) is that they would take inspiration from post-punk, new wave, ska, synth pop, etc. And mix them with folkloric rythms creating an eclectic sound.

When it comes to Australian new wave, the first band that popped into my head was The Models. Their early albums in particular (eg Local And/Or General). Also The Sports and Mi-Sex.
Split Enz didn't start out as New Wave but from Dizrhythmia onwards moved in that direction (True Colours for example).
A lot of Oz rock of the time was "pub rock" strongly influenced by ACDC (eg The Angels, The Radiators) but some bands had closer ties to New Wave and arguably were a parallel evolution into the indie type of sound that you associate with REM- bands like The Church and Gang Gajang.
While INXS evolved into stadium rock, I agree that their first few albums have a very New Wave vibe.

I can see New Wave as a literal wave that washed over the worst of the bloated self-important music in the 1970s. There was a sudden, surprising surge of energy. Helped perhaps by me being a kid at the time.
I've been listening to quite a lot of Yellow Magic Orchestra, since Ryuichi Sakamoto's death. I always admired him.
And, lest I forget (again)...I really liked your blue velvet dress. Very cool.
yes, it's a great genre and such a huge one to cover in 20 minutes. Lot of good mention. I would add "Urrgh a music war" as one of the greatest new wave movies I've seen. It's more of a collection of live new wave performances including the Go Go's, Oingo Boingo, Wall of Voodoo, Police, and Gary Numan. Most of it can be found on UA-cam. I also thought Trevor Horn had a major part in new wave with the Bangles("Video Killed the radio star")his work with The Art of Noise, Yes, and other production work he did. I always though Flock of Seagulls really left an imprint when they came out. New Wave also had some influences in R&B with stuff like Irene Cara and the Pointer sisters; and later Lady Gaga. Still with the influences I felt like new wave died out pretty quickly and got tagged as "nostaliga". Johnny Marr had a notable interview where he scorned bands with 10 syllables and only using synths but later paired with Bernard Sumner in Electronic. By the end of the 80's people grew tired of new wave and hair metal and as you mention bands like The Smiths and REM paved the way for alternative and college rock. Great video again, Stella. I was alive (and a dj in the 80’s) and I’d like to add a few things: new wave was noticeable by the production and recording also. The drum and bass parts became simpler (and that loud snare drum ), keyboards had colder sound; this part of new wave identity even influenced other genre at the time: for example, listen to the difference between the 70’s and 80’s musical style / production of heavier bands like Aerosmith or Scorpions.
Every roots of funk, disco, soul, groove were almost purged from the music.

Nouvelle Vague was a French cinema critics' term from the late 1950s and 1960s. Of course, critics being critics, it was translated into English twenty years later so that a new generation of critics could pat themselves on the head about how smart they were.

What you failed to mention what killed off new wave in 85 was the LA Glam Metal scene from 83-91. Starting with Motley Crue, Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Bon Jovi all the way to Mr. Big, Warrant, Extreme, and all the copy cat bands at the time who mainly wrote songs about sex & partying.
Until Seattle Grunge killed it dead.
But MTV also started to give the cold shoulder to most of the new wave acts they started the channel with. Goth, Indie, Shoegaze, and a few synth pop acts now had “Alternative” music as the new umbrella for both the US & UK markets. This got fractured somewhat as Chicago House music & Detroit techno as well as Industrial music moved on from anything that sounded new wave. You didn’t have the internet promoting any of these new styles. It all was word of mouth until REM, Sonic Youth, and some other bands had signed to Majors just at the end of the 80’s.

I grew up with 80ies pop music. Bananarama, the Bangles, Pet shop boys, the cure, pat Benatar, Depeche mode, a-ha, Alphaville, boomtown rats, buggles, culture club, dead or alive, eurythmics, frankie goes to hollywood, billy idol, joe jackson, howard jones, kajagoogoo, king, the knack, cyndi lauper, madness, martha and the muffins, men without hats, midnight oil, new order, the police, spandau ballet, stranglers, talk talk, kim wylde, a lot of that would be considered New Wave or Newpop/Newmusic. And certainly German New Wave: Nena, Nina Hagen, Peter Schilling, Andreas dorau, Döf, eav, extrabreit, falco, fehlfarben, geier sturzflug, grauzone, hubert kah, ideal, Witt, illi berlin, markus, rio reiser, spider murphy gang, Steinwolke, trio, united balls, Zoff... what a beautyful time and childhood!

You forgot to mention Echo and the Bunnymen. And just so you know, the "t" in Spandau Ballet is soft: "Spandau" is German, but ballet is French, hence the "t' sounds like an "eh"--Spandau Ball-eh" But just the same, I'll always love you, Stella.

Blondie does not fit the New Wave fuzzy concept very well outside maybe 1 or 2 hits that even I can remember (a big fan of Blondie since my childhood). Talking Heads does because the other thing outside thing that fit New Wave was to be very different than the mainstream pop of the time, basically New Wave was the Alternative Rock/pop of that era, but that was also true of other labels like College Rock.

the record companies did all they could to blacklist punk/new wave artists because they new their dinosaur rock would soon be history, obsolete.. punk/new wave/alternative rock replaced boring classic rock.

I loved the Knack, but don't get why they would make the New Wave list other than coming out when that label was hot. All the marketing for the band around 1979 or so described how the music had the feel and excitement of the 1960s rock of bands like the Beatles, and Stones but was somehow also fresh and new.

Love your work but a lot of this was not new wave it was new romantic electro pop 2 tone or punk skar rock steady like UB40 also there is some early 80s sorphistie pop new wave was a music style bast on pub rock punk and in USA Bruce Springsteen n punk it was also left leaning as punk was right leaning not always but Adam ant was punk auntie royal so new right that become the first new romantic and that.
