Yep, as a Russian, I 100% confirm that at the moment post-punk is having its underground renaissance here. The only problem is that in an internet era most kids refer to it as Russian Doomer Music. And the main difference between Russian post-punk and original one is that the original one often chooses the topic of politics, fears or gothic style stuff whereas the Russian one is all about post-soviet decadence and overall lingering depression/apathy, which is less of a personal thing and more of a millenial generation trait at this point. Also post-punk is probably so popular here because we have at least one iconic band from the 80s that kinda set the course for that genre. I'm talking about "Кино" (eng. Film \ Cinema) that's commonly considered a "Russian rock" band, but many of their songs have this very post-punk-ish vibe, especially the ones like "Спокойная Ночь" (eng. Quiet Night), "Кукушка" (eng. Cuckoo) or "Группа Крови" (eng. Blood Type). P.S.: *POOTIS PENCER HERE* indeed, комрад. Прям в самое сердечко.

When i first heard post punk i felt that this was the music that spoke to me like no other form of music. It was hard to understand in the beginning as I was into rock metal progressive rock grunge everything, but this became and is always the music that is closest to my heart. It is a feeling, not just music.

As a guitarist, you can get a really cool gothy sound by playing those arpeggios drenched in reverb and while leaning lightly on a trem bar, shoegaze style. The wavery sound you get from that adds a lot of cool ambiance.

literally came across this video while listening to post-punk. I've never been so attached to a pagefire video this much. Kinda wish u talked a little about the recent (late 2010's-2020's) resurgence in the UK other than just the Russian side, but I still love the vid, nonetheless :). Some of the most comprehensive post-punk stuff I've seen!
This was very fun to watch, and the song actually sounds great, I would definitely go to a concert of a band who sounded like that! Also, post-punk is an essential soundtrack for Russian environment, once you arrive to basically any Russian city and turn on something like KINO in your headphones, you start to get it.

Dead Kennedys definitely had a goth side that Jello proudly acknowledged. They took UK Decay (possibly the first goth band) out on tour along the west coast, and they are sort of Birthday Party-ish at times.
Great to see there's someone who remembered UK Decay! Mick Mercer used to think they sucked lmao! I think Biafra mean't it as a joke, since those bands all had the same punk roots.
I remember when Katatonia tried to start a post-punk project and they failed because they just couldn't think of compositions in the style. But they made an AWESOME song called Scarlet Havens and released it on Discouraged Ones from 1998.
Coming from no technical music background I've been trying to learn more about genres and how to describe characteristics of music (jargon) and this video has been not only entertaining but one of the best informative resources I've found. For anyone else curious I found some info on ecclesiastical modes though not directly related to post punk, seems like Dorian, lydian, Phrygian, and mixolydian are the main ones, I believe. Aside from aeolian and Ionian.

For anyone else curious I found some info on ecclesiastical modes though not directly related to post punk, seems like Dorian, lydian, Phrygian, and mixolydian are the main ones, I believe. Aside from aeolian and Ionian.
Ahh yes. Goth rock is some of the best music out there. The 80s and 90s really were great for Goths. Before hot topic made it possible for every poser to go into the store and walk out looking like Tim Burton threw up all over them.....

Hardcore punk and post-punk started around the same time (late 70s/early 80s). We weren't supposed to like both at the time, but a lot of us did.
