It's honestly nuts how perfect that album is. And how incredibly ahead of it's time it sounds. There are several Talking Heads songs/albums that I honestly think would turn heads if released today as new modern music. Nothing about it sounds dated somehow. There's PLENTY of music I love that is great, but sounds SO of the time it came from. INXS album "Kick" is one that immediately comes to mind. It sounds hilariously late 80s. Almost like it was made today...in an attempt to distil that late 80s, scooped mids, gated reverb, antiseptically clean, quasi new-jack-swing sound. But still a great album. But then there are other albums....that are objectively timeless and sound like they're from every decade...or no decade. Remain in Light is one of those. I'd also say....Revolver(but _not_ Sgt Pepper). Also much of the music of The Police. And maybe Tool's Aenima and Lateralus. OH....and Animal Collective's brilliant Merriweather Post Pavilion. Albums that don't scream "This is when I was made!" and instead work simply due to the music being effortlessly excellent.

Great New Wave Top 5! Parallel Lines is one of the LP’s that is classic from start to finish. You didn’t point out that ‘Fade Away Radiate’ featured Robert Fripp on Lead G. @@pablovargasfuentes817 Television were sharing the stage w/ all the punk pioneers at CBGBs, so chronologically they're not post-punk. There is a little band very well known on my country called "Descontrolados" who were called new wave and post-punk by a magazine, i don't really call them post-punk but the music is really new wave-ish. Check out their EP "Piedad"
The five highlighted albums are my meat and drink, the soundtrack of my life. Devo's live freedom of choice theme merging into whip it from power of positive thinking is stronger, better than stand alone whip it on freedom of choice. If there's one band fantastic band from the era that nobody has heard of I could put you on to it is japanese band jagatara.
With the exception of POWER, CORRUPTION, & LIES (which I've never heard all the way through), I can certainly vouch for the excellence of all these albums. FREEDOM OF CHOICE was one of the very first albums I ever purchased, so it is particularly close to my heart. :) My Gnu Wave Top 5: 1) OUTLANDOS D'AMOUR - The Police (1978) 2) MY AIM IS TRUE - Elvis Costello (1977) 3) Q: ARE WE NOT MEN? A: WE ARE DEVO! - Devo (1978) 4) S/T - The B-52's (1979) 5) PARALLEL LINES - Blondie (1978)
Not sure if the adoption of the genre name was intentional for this reason, but it's my understanding that a driving characteristic of the French New Wave was the new handheld film camera that allowed for groundbreaking new perspectives in narration... So, new tech = breaking the conventions of the art, which also defines the sound of new wave music in the 70s - 80s.
I think Speaking In Tongues is a more poppy and digestible album than Remain In Light, if one is not super familiar with new wave. Otherwise, solid list. I get that you’re deep cuts, but I think Unknown Pleasures is the best thing the New Order guys ever did.
It's more electronica than new wave. The latter is more guitar-based and ragged than the majorly calculated, sequenced perfectionism of 'Violator', or any album of theirs from 1984-1997.
@@somebraveapollo8211 this is not accurate. Synth pop and new wave overlap heavily. The idea that new wave is always guitar oriented is the dumbest shit I’ve ever read.
Good reviews. That said, I always had a problem in separating new wave from post-punk and to make my mind up about the pertinence of separating the two. To my mind remain in light and devo are post-punkers but, all in all, is good music that matters.
Here's your guide: pick up This Year's Model, Armed Forces, Get Happy and Trust. Listen to them. A LOT. Marinade. Pick up King of America because you're interested in hearing what he can do with a more acoustic album. If you like those 5 albums - which are about as great as he gets - move on to Imperial Bedroom and Blood And Chocolate. While those two aren't as consistent (to my ears...I know there are many who think Imperial Bedroom is incredible), they do have some of his highest highs. If you're still onboard the Elvis Costello train, you might be wondering why I hadn't suggested My Aim Is True. I just never liked it. If you do like it - I'm sure at least a million people have - more power to you. The next tier of records I would suggest include Almost Blue (for some good country-rock), Spike (for a wide variety of music), Brutal Youth (for a more "Attractions"-like sound), All this Useless Beauty and maybe When I Was Cruel. If you like those, you don't need my help anymore. Just move on to whatever else he's recorded. There are some hit-and-miss records out there. Some people think (insert record I haven't mentioned here) is one of the greatest records they've ever heard. But those first five albums I mentioned are just about perfect and the only albums I'd recommend to everyone.
@@chrisdelisle3954 BRAVO, mate! My first "punk" album was This Year's Model. Imperial Bedroom is not only my fave EC album but is in the Top Ten of my all-time faves.
A guide to industrial music? Or five albums to get you into the genre? Or are you into industrial? Too many questions! But seriously - so many within this genre - Cabaret Voltaire/Throbbing Gristle/Nitzer Ebb/Ministry/Skinny Puppy/Einstürzende Neubauten/Thrill Kill Kult/Front 242/Coil/Meat Beat Manifesto............ the list is extensive!
Good list, but I'm never quite sure whether New Wave encompasses Post-Punk and Synthpop or if they are different genres altogether, sort of how Krautrock encompasses most of German music from the 70s, be it rock or electronica. Some of my favourite New Wave albums: Simple Minds - Empires and Dance (1980), The Passions - Thirty Thousand Feet Over China (1981), Echo and the Bunnymen (first four albums), OMD - Organisation (1980) and Dazzle Ships (1983), Tears for Fears - The Hurting (1983), first three U2 albums (although they're more alternative rock than New Wave), and Ultravox - Vienna (1980).
5:00 You sure about PolyMoog on "Heart of Glass". I know they had a CR-78 drum machine triggering an early Roland SH-1000 or SH-2000. I would have substituted "Synchronicity" with The Cars' eponymous first album or even The Police's "Ghost in the Machine". Stewart Copeland is the most "musical" drummer ever.
Without schooling , I think a person tends to have his own definitions of what music genres , particularily ' new wave ' is / was . Perhaps some people assume it's bands that wore a lot of make-up / costumes and played music with a heavy synth element . I'm age 51 now and for the first time hearing a solid explanation .
Mate has no script, he speaks from the heart. Sending respect and good vibes.

I love the begining of "King of Pain".
Awesome video as usual Oliver, as a counter to this video you should do a '5 albums to get you into no wave' video
There is a little band very well known on my country called "Descontrolados" who were called new wave and post-punk by a magazine, i don't really call them post-punk but the music is really new wave-ish. Check out their EP "Piedad"
Great video my favourites are remain in light and q are we not men a we sre devo
i would love to see a video on no wave, keep up the great work
The five highlighted albums are my meat and drink, the soundtrack of my life.
My Gnu Wave Top 5:
1) OUTLANDOS D'AMOUR - The Police (1978)
2) MY AIM IS TRUE - Elvis Costello (1977)
3) Q: ARE WE NOT MEN? A: WE ARE DEVO! - Devo (1978)
4) S/T - The B-52's (1979)
5) PARALLEL LINES - Blondie (1978)
Hmmm.... The problem with this genre is that there are way too many to choose from. But you made some solid choices. :)
Love it! Remain in light is fantastic.
have you considered doing any folk sub-genres?
A Freak Folk guide would be sick
I would have selected Regatta de Blanc myself. Synchronicity was a little later than the 80s British Invasion.
As a person who runs a New Order fan account on Instagram, this has indeed made me a very happy camper
I am very surprised that you included The Police in this video. I used to listen them A LOT when I was younger.
I'm surprised that Depeche Mode wasn't included. Violator is like one of my all time favorite albums
They are synth pop.
It's more electronica than new wave. The latter is more guitar-based and ragged than the majorly calculated, sequenced perfectionism of 'Violator', or any album of theirs from 1984-1997.
Yeah Violator is definitely not new wave
@@somebraveapollo8211 this is not accurate. Synth pop and new wave overlap heavily. The idea that new wave is always guitar oriented is the dumbest shit I’ve ever read.
1990? I remember New Wave years from '76 to '84
Good reviews. That said, I always had a problem in separating new wave from post-punk and to make my mind up about the pertinence of separating the two. To my mind remain in light and devo are post-punkers but, all in all, is good music that matters.
They are similar. Post punk is just dark and gothic new wave to me. Then new wave with a bunch of synths and drum machines becomes synth pop.
How bout a guide to Elvis Costello?
Any live boot from 1977 or 1978 beats the studio records. Try Live at El Macambo for instance.
The police & talking heads... this is my kind of list
Amazing work! Please please do Boards of Canada album reviews... Hope you did well at school, cheers!
Lol this is my moms favorite genre. Hopefully I can get into it now
Has your mom got any records from that era? Steal them! Ha ha ha.
You should do a follow-up with Synthpop!
Pretty great list! Not at all related to new wave, but any possibility of a guide to Xiu Xiu or 5 albums to you into glitch in the future?
Good picks. How about Robert Fripp & The League of Gentlemen?
No Songs From The Big Chair by Tears for Fears ???
caleb aldrich I think that’s more Synthpop though there is a thin line between the 2.
Haut Strange The album is hailed as a classic new wave album on most media I can find though. Even in its description on iTunes and wikipedia.
Songs From The Big Chair could be considered a prog-rock take on New Wave imo.
Surprised you didn’t put on any of Elvis Costello’s first couple of albums. They were more guitar focused but still pretty new wave
I would have split enz true colours in there
brilliant selection
Without schooling , I think a person tends to have his own definitions of what music genres , particularily ' new wave ' is / was .
Perhaps some people assume it's bands that wore a lot of make-up / costumes and played music with a heavy synth element .
I'm age 51 now and for the first time hearing a solid explanation .
How about a guide to Guided by Voices? It might take 3 hours but I’d watch it!
Reminder to everyone that Stewart Copeland wrote the music for the first four Spyro games.
I don't know how it happened, but I'm glad.
Yes my favourite games of all time, probably a lot to do with that music
What s your views on The B 52's first two albums?
My man deep cuts wazzup dawg
Please do more metal subgenres for these videos! I'd love to see a brutal death metal one :)
