Thanks for the tips on carburettor stripdown,my HP 414 was hunting and now it's behaving perfectly. I adjusted the throttle stop screw too and it makes a world of difference.
I come back to click the thumb up and subscribe buttons to say thank you as I worked on my 414 HP following your video and it is now working like an angle. I did not clean the carbo though but install a new one instead as I found it on eBay for less than £10.
I just got round to trying this out and it worked a treat. The job was far easier than I expected, due largely to this video. I bought a $17 AUD carburettor off eBay and it’s running sweet as a nut.
Mountfield is a name I don't know. They look like an MTD The motor also looks like what I call a Chonda. I am fusing with a B&S Quantum with a choke that is hard to start. I am thinking of putting a primer button on it with the primer carb too. . It was rigged by an amateur before I got it. Good video brother. Hunting = carb clean.
Bruce Pender hi mate. I have had 4 of them in this year all with the same problem. It’s not the jets it’s with in the main carb is the problem. Yeah try putting a primer on it I will help i would say
A great video Mick. I bought an ultrasonic cleaner based on your recommendation and they are brill. Cracking channel fella. Best wishes from Lancashire 👍🏼
Thanks, I've cleaned the same carb though probably not quite as thoroughly and didn't realise there was another orifice under the idle screw so need to check that too - issue is it will start on the primer but not run - hoping this will help as it seems to be a very simple carb otherwise! 🙂
@@themowerman thanks, well after pulling the slow jet the o-ring had a break in it so no luck there - I've had it apart and cleaned it around half a dozen times now - even tried WD-40 (a new use for me 😆) and even very lightly "drilled" out the main jet with some micro-drills I "found" from a load of workshop stuff I acquired a while back - so I'm stumped, it seems to have no fuel delivery once started but it's so simple I can't see what else could be the issue other than trying to find a replacement o-ring for the idle jet, but I don't think that's the issue - the whole carb (generic copy) is available for less than a tenner so I might just go with that - annoying but seems to be the most pragmatic solution vs time and effort🤔
You did it again it sounded sweet ticking over i like the idea of plastic decks as the decks always seem to rot away on mowers when there is plenty life left in the engines
Fantastic video as always Mick. Just a quick question when you put the carbs in the ultrasonic cleaner do u leave the gaskets and rubber o ring on the carb or remove them before you put them in the ultrasonic cleaner. Keep up the good work mate 👍
Great video Mick. I have a Mountfield 414, stripped it and cleaned it with carb spray, put it all back together again, and it is still surging and hunting. Am I missing something? Checked the spark plug with multimeter, all fine, plus checked the ignition coil with multimeter, all fine there too. Bulb was pressing fine, no leaks and whilst stripping the carb down I could see the petrol seeping out when bulb was pressed. Any other suggestions?
I had the same disappointing result after I cleaned the carburettor. I'll try the file and see how it goes. My oil hasn't been changed in 10 years 😯 but still shows as clean and sufficient.
Hi Mick watched this video and your other one! Absolutely spot on I stripped the carb down cleaned the jets and it fixed the hunting issue. Now running sweet ! Thank you! Only issue I had was finding a bit of wire to clean the jet ! Do you have a link for the files and drill bits so I can get some for next time😜do you think adding a bit of reflex to the fuel is a good idea going forwards?
Hey , my sp414 is hunting like mad , so going to strip it and rebuild it , on the things that look like brushes under pull start casing the coil I think , there is a loose bolt and it’s sitting at an angle , and they are magnetic so pull to the disc , what should that gap be ? Thanks
Hi do you have that lever still that cuts mover out on handle if so would you sell it as mine is missing I'm also after a grass box for it its a rs100 I have
Hi Mick. Another great video. I need to look at my Mountfield. It starts, but takes a minute or so to finally kick in on full power. Then all of a sudden it stops but does starts again. This can happen several times. Carbon do you think? Cheers.
Alright Mick I’ve just picked up a Mountfield HP164 RS 100, it was hunting so I cleaned the carb and fuel filter, but it’s still doing it, could it be something to do with the values?
It's hard to say.. what I would do is go back to the carburettor.. I have cleaned some 3 times before it stops.. when doing the main jet I rim it out a bit to make it bigger.. dont take to much off .. hope it helps
Hi chaps, the video was a great help in getting mine sorted. Float bowl was full of debris so cleaned and flushed jets with WD40. Worked a treat and then started hunting again. Upped the idle speed slightly and now perfect!
By the way mick I had a Mountfield SV150 little sovereign self propelled mower, it had spark, compression, and fuel but still wasn’t even close to firing up even with carb cleaner spraying in the carburettor! Any idea mate ?

I think you still got the parts from that Toro Personal Pace, including the auto-choke carb and vane. That will swap, right Bruce?
