    In this video, I show a few common problems that make an sv 150 engine hunt and surge and rev up and down!
    These engines are prone to hunting. Servicing the carburettor is recommended first and then set the idle speed

    Hi, everyone. And Hello Mower Man. I am sure you will have covered this in a video somewhere and I apologise if this is going over old ground but I thought I would share my experience.
    A few months ago, I bought a "Mountfield" self-propelled mower with an RS100 motor. It was pretty well near new but had been stored dry for a winter. I put fuel in and after a few pulls it started. However, the first time I used it in anger it started to hunt and has done so ever since. I took it to a friend for advice and we were both left scratching our heads. We found and watched a couple of your videos and visually inspected the carb with all its springs and levers. Everything appeared to be working correctly. Then I started the engine again and my friend said open the throttle fully and see if it revs. I tried and no matter where I put the leaver the revs remained the same and the engine continued to hunt. That’s when he had a “slap the forehead moment” and showed me that the plastic housing around the throttle leaver was broken, just at the point where the cable enters. It is meant to grip the outer casing on the cable so that when you move the leaver the wire moves back and forth inside and operates the throttle at the carb. We managed a temporary fix by locating the end of the cable where it was supposed to sit and the securing it to the metal handlebar with cable ties. The throttle now works and the engine responds and does not hunt. So if anyone has a problem with their engine hunting, before you start stripping the carb just check the other end of the throttle cable it might save you a lot of time 😊 I looked online and the Throttle leaver unit is available for around £20. And from the comments left this is clearly a very common problem. The plastic is simply not man enough for the job.

    this is without doubt the most comprehensive and detailed troubleshooting guide for the Champion SV150 anywhere.
    In the first few minutes i have discovered that I did not have the governor springs in the right location so it could never work properly .There is also a spring missing which I was not aware of. No wonder I could never get it to run correctly without over-revving , cutting out and hunting issues.
    Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and experience so freely .

    I had one recently and it was an air leak on the inlet tube from the carb to the top of the engine. A hairline fracture in the tube itself. Not visible until i took it off. 😁👍

    With a hunting problem on a SV150, it's either an air leak or fuel starvation. So I go through all of the advice on your video and if it still hunts, I remove the main jet and open it up very slightly with a fine drill bit to let more fuel through...that usually fixes it

    Hello Mower Man. Shaun from Shaun's Lawns here, I know this question is nothing to do with the SV 150 but I have just purchased a 2008 Mountfield RM55 160cc Power Drive 464 PD. The question I have to ask you is that I have just serviced the mower including dismantaling the carb as the mower would not start, all complete now and the mower is running ok-ish but it tends to hunt (slightly revving up and down) Do you have any Idea what is causing it. Would be grateful for your expertise advice. By the way I really enjoy watching your vids. Look forward to hearing from you. Shaun

    I have a question, hoping you could answer. Do you know what compression reading the SV150s should be between. I’ve been looking to find what they would have been when they left the manufacturer, and what range it should be in, unfortunately I can’t find any figures on these specific engines. Any help much appreciated. Thank you.

    hi
    i'm currently refurbishing a 1980's vintage mountfield emblem as i think it should see the rest of my life out being an alloy deck and a trusty 3hp briggs and stratton which is what drew me to it in the first place. engine is running as sweet as a nut and is now removed, i have the handles away getting powder coated and i'm in the process of stripping the deck down to clean and re-paint but i'm struggling to fathom out how to remove the front axle? are these held on by bolts which sheer off when they are tightened up (security bolts) ?

    great video , thanks , Ive tried everything . mine starts on choke , revs then dies straight away. when I spray with carb cleaner it keeps going for while pops and burps then dies. , Had carb down three times ,air lined clean as whistle ,changed o ring on inlet manifold ( should this have gasket as well?) , re sealed head gasket ,good plug , check coil lead , cut out switch, clicking and multi meter checked, from what I can see wood rough key looks ok, mind you could not take flay wheel off to see . crank doesn't have a viable key-way. arhhhh dont want to give up !!

      @joeshoestringracer75 5 років тому

      @@MowerMan Hi , thanks, yes the choke opens, closes fine. needle is free and clean. I dont think its a air leak but as Steve says ill check the inlet tube. My immediate thoughts were blocked main jet and float level. But its plastic float and needle and seat is fine. Do you think it would it fire up then die immediately if the coil was duff? and im not sure about the key way i pulled the nut and the ring off but cant see as it obscured, its wood rough key and not a spline keayway on mine.

Same manifold, same threaded breather tube sam flat head design and bolt spacing even the same way of fixing the carburettor control assembly to the front of the engine (3 head bolts across the top) i wonder if the carb and hardware from a briggs and Stratton 35 classic would work on one of these?

    its a chinese copy of the classic 35 but with a float carb and seperate tank. and its a bad bad copy. :-( bad bad engine. 95% of the problems with the sv/rv150 are to do with the carburettor. on some there is a brass jet on the top of the carb opposite the throttle. the jet had been crushed from being overtightned and it never ran good until i replaced that jet. Another thing the ht lead from the coil feels loose at the coil. another bad design. Some variants have a catylytic converter on the exhaust. You can convert them to a paper air filter like the quantum (briggs)
