She absolutely is playing the 'woman card'.

Cobalt360Degrees I think her observation is interesting and worth discussing. It’s not a ‘problem’ so much as an observation. I don’t think it’s one thing/person at fault but statistically with all things being equal, it’s unlikely that a list of 10 people would be all male. I believe she was trying to start a discussion. Why it’s a problem to do this because it’s about women is kinda ridiculous to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think Lilly's entire argument of women not being represented equally is irrelevant. Represented by whom? She got on that list strictly on her own merrits, everyone who's on that list is there because of their own individual success. Until we stop seeing each other for who we are and start seeing each other for what we do instead, we'll never get past this nonsense of constantly comparing each other based on gender, race or class.

    • @jblue1622
      @jblue1622 5 років тому +5

Anton.d09 no one is on any rich list because of "their own success" many work in tandem with other successful people, and then there is also the people that help project them up, in this case the people who watch her vids, buy her merch and books and give her a platform to stand on, no one would be shit without the other people around them supporting them

    • @chuchez834
      @chuchez834 5 років тому +16

@@jblue1622 but doesn't that go out the window based on how the article is written? Phil said that it is probably calculated by views and stats off the channel. I haven't looked over the article, but if thay is the case then the article is treating each channel as the person or persons it showcases at the forefront. Merch and books sales are not accounted for so that could explain why there aren't other big names on the list. The list could have been biased toward males, but the youtube platform isn't. Revenue from ads are pretty similar across the platform. But anyother source of income is not controlled by UA-cam ie merch, liveshows, sponserships. It's just strange for a person to say there's inequality from a small margin of youtubers and from a purely speculative article.

I'm an EU immigrant in the UK (no voting right on this issue) and I think they are heading towards a full crash out no deal Brexit. The reason I believe this is because many Brexiteers seem to feel that they are entitled to nothing less than having the cake and eating it - and this is what many politicians promised them before the referendum. The deal was going to be "the easiest" thing in the world to negotiate but when push came to shove they all did a Brave Sir Robin and gallantly chickened out. So May has negotiated the best deal they will get (albeit shite) and now everyone is so hellbent on pointing fingers at whose fault this is that nothing will pass on time...

Lilly Singh's claim that there is inequality on youtube could only be true if the youtube algorithms were sexist, unless someone manipulated the code there is no way that can happen. Female creators most likely get better ad revenue per view than male creators since female creators tend to make more advertiser friendly content on youtube (most of the edgy or risky content is from male creators), but that's not about gender, it's purely about the content they make.

True story. Amazon was using A.I to select job candidates for awhile and they had to scrap it because the self-learning algorithm, based on word usage, trained itself to select male resumes and ended up freezing out women. So it's entirely possible that even an impartial algorithm that shouldn't care at all about gender could learn to prefer and recommend male content.
The issue would be that, as an aggregate, people prefer male content and so the algorithm, trying to predict what people will like, will learn to recommend content created by male youtubers. That creates a sort of feedback loop, which there's no easy solution for that. The algorithm can't determine gender and recommend content just because a creator is female. If it did people would end up hating what was being recommended for them because the content wouldn't match what they naturally prefer. It would create a negative feedback loop and ultimately would re-balance to recommend content people prefer (from male creators).

Also noticed majority of the people on the list were gaming channels but gaming channels have taken a huge hit the last couple years. Markiplier for example has 22 million subs and only makes 1-2 million views or less per majority of his videos. It's not just him either. A lot of gaming creators are starting to stream on other platforms instead now because the views have tanked here. They really shouldn't put out articles like this if they are just going to guesstimate haha.

The Forbes article isn’t fact based. It’s speculation probably mostly off of socialblade numbers.
As someone who was Adwords certified I can tell you most creators... even successful ones don’t know how ads on UA-cam/Google really work...
Everything isn’t Views, there are ad tiers and also monetization ratios.
For some creators 1 Million Views is only worth $500, but on others Channel that would be $10,000...
Different channels are valuable to different brands that also have different amounts of ad inventory...
    So many variables...
And here’s one, Logan was removed from Google Premium Ads, and was suspended from ads...
He and Jake both also lost huge brand deals (7 Figures according to them)...
So yeah the list doesn’t make sense...

About Lilly Singh, I can't agree with her. that's like saying that because the most viewed channels are male, that must mean that youtube is anti-women, when that just means males have been getting more viewers through their own effort than them. Just because you aren't on that list doesn't mean you are being looked down upon, it just means those 10 people have a bigger viewer base than most. Like, you are not going to comment that one of them is a "kid" channel? if a channel primarily hosted by an underage kid, I don't think there is an issue about representation, and more what actually just does the best

@K Webster She implied that this was possibly systematic with the statement "I'm concerned the digital space is going to repeat the mistakes of ancient industries." This isn't systematic. This has never been a systematic issue. People watch less female youtubers because female youtubers aren't making the sort of widespread, mass appeal content that male youtubers are.
there is no system stopping female youtubers from being in the top 10 earners, they just aren't making content for large audiences, and any income disparty is on them.

  • @keeganollerhead2075

Okay but that isn't female representation. Female representation means giving women the same opportunities and roles as men, having a woman be the main character in an action film etc. etc. But the biggest UA-camrs and people who make money isn't about representation and equality, at the end of the day its up to the consumers what they watch. It isn't about representing women or men, it's about the numbers. Also looking at the list it all makes sense, a lot of the top people on the list are gamers that post everyday or every second day, their demographic is young teenagers and kids (who are the people who have the most time to watch and are on the internet more than girls most likely). And saying that women are represented is false, Jeffree Star's channel is aimed towards girls I don't think most guys are watching makeup tutorials. It isn't a woman on the list but women put him there, on top of it Jeffree had one of the best years of his career in 2018. It all makes sense when you think about the consumers, Lilly is just nitpicking and wants to start something out of nothing. There are genuine thing to be upset about involving representation, but being upset about the numbers is just dumb imo. You can't control what consumers go towards.

Gender and race have never been factors for whether I enjoy content creators or not. JaidenAnimations is a favorite, yet I never watch her and think, "Wow, she's a woman." Etika is also a favorite, yet I never watch him and think, "Wow, he's black." I'm certain that's how most people see content creators.
However, I did scroll through my subscription list, and out of a hundred or so, maybe one or two of them were women. I'm no sociologist, but it made me wonder if there is any underlying subtext (are women discouraged from creating content on certain fields? are they just not interested in those fields?). For example, I love music theorists like Adam Neely and Rick Beato. I'm sure that if there was a female music theorist with a comparable (or greater) intellect as them, I'd subscribe to her. But why hasn't that channel made the UA-cam rounds? Maybe I'm ignorant, maybe I'm reading too deeply into it. I just found the brief statistic on my subscription list interesting.

A lot of it honestly has to do with priorities. Men and women have different ones, while women enjoy 'making bank' just as much as men they are, on average, not going to put in the amount of hours and sweat that men often put into careers and businesses. Women prioritize a life/work balance, wanting to have a thriving, or at least not dead, social life while also working as much as they feel they can do while keeping that social life. Men often put that on the back burner hence the old stereotype of 'men prioritizing office work with time at home'. There are a whole bunch of factors. Take myself for example, an early 20s women, I always scored well in math and sciences but I'm majoring in early childhood education because that's where my passion is as well as the work hours that I think will serve me well if I have a family in the future.

If I were to hazard a guess its the nature of the platform and what it requires of someone to get big. If you are not putting 50+ hours into youtube than you're more than likely not going to be a success on the platform. That kind of environment favors men who are more willing to let other things fall to the wayside in pursuit of a career. Men on average (I'd sure as hell not put in 50+ hours a week, and I'm sure I can name at least 5 women in my personal friend group who'd do it happily) are more likely to throw themselves into that kind of meat grinder.

Regarding Netflix, they go into an absolutely INSANE amount of metadata regarding their films and your own personal viewing habits. Therefore the homepage you see on Netflix is different than almost every other user on the planet. It explains why some of those shows can be surprising, they can be the first show to pop up on someone's page, and you may never see it once. The amount of data collection and market research that goes into Netflix is truly astounding.

    • @kgoblin5084
      @kgoblin5084 5 років тому +1

Worth reminding people that Netflix was the company that awarded a $million dollar prize for people to develop the best possible predictive recommendation engine they could. Of course, Netflix never actually used the solution from their prize winner, in part because their business model had shifted by the time the contest was over... and as someone with a bit of history in the same space Netflix & everyone else are kind of dialing it in on the recommendation aspect. Mostly nowadays it seems very dumbly driven by the last thing you happened to watch, rather than a sophisticated & effective attempt to capture & analyze your overarching interests & preferences.
Also, Netflix intentionally constantly scrambles a given users page, and they maxmize number of results shown on the main browse page; in order to maximize exposing the user to as many potentially interesting films as it can. So while your preferences are your preferences, spending a fairly reasonable amount of time on the platform you should still see a lot of shows, not just top picks per the preferences engine.
And of course, part of the browse page is dedicated to semi-fixed content, eg the trending now list is, quite literaly, stuff that is trending right that very moment, which will tend towards new releases. The netflix original list (you know, that bit where the titles are 5x as tall with the fancier pictures) is also largely divorced from a user's preferences.
More likely, I think the reasons people find it so easy to 'miss' content on Netflix comes down to 3 factors:
      a) they do just have a lot of content. Things do just get overlooked
      b) that oh-so-busy browse page, it's a bit too busy. Right now on my browse page, I count 45 distinct lists each showing ~5 shows apiece. That is alot of content, more than enough to miss a proverbial needle in a haystack
      c) on same said browse page, they do NOT properly eliminate duplicates, or stuff you have already indicated an interest in (basically, added to your personal pick list). In pretty much every one of those 43 lists (excluding the continue watching & of course my list), I see something that is ALSO on my pick list... which is taking up space that they could be using to show me other content I am unaware of.

She's nice, she's funny, she's calming, and her content was seriously an aesthetic. Whereas my favorite male YTer is Jacksfilms, because not only do I like his content but I like HIM, he's funny, very talented, and comes off as a genuinely nice guy. I didn't/don't like everything they make/made but even if some content isn't to my interest watching them as entertainers/personalities is why I'm a fan. Has nothing to do with male v female, it's about content and how enjoyable it is to others. Quality, universal content means more fans, more fans means more money, pretty simple.

Yeah, like idk what she wants people to change with her criticism? Does she want people to watch more female creators? It comes down to who is putting out good content at the moment. There are tons of good content creators and tons of good female content creators, but people like what they like and if the women of youtube want to be paid better by youtube then they need to put out better content that appeals to bigger markets, which, sure some of them are doing, but not as many men are watching things like beauty blogs, but they're also a more sponsorable industry which makes up for that difference as you said. I don't know how much forbes took sponsorships and product sales into account more than just what theyre being paid by youtube.

There is no manager or ceo, who could potentially be sexist or discriminate. The only one who can do better is the creator if they wanna earn more money.
Also important: I know a couple of youtubers who still stay anonymous even with millions of subscribers. Noone knows their ethnicity. Most do speak, so we can guess the gender by their voice. But what I mean is that on UA-cam it doesn't matter where you are from and how you look and what gender you are. Good content will attract viewers.

Brit here. I voted remain, because the EU gives us some really important things, it protects our workers' rights, keeps our produce healthy, and our labelling clear, for somebody with allergies that part is a big deal for me, and I didn't like the idea of us losing our standard by attempting to accommodate US standards in both commerce (10 rat hairs per 50g of cinnamon? wtf?!) and working laws. I also didn't like the anti-immigrant rhetoric. I note that most of the areas that voted remain are those with high immigrant populations, and most of the areas that voted leave were those with hardly any immigrants. In other words, when you only know about immigrants from the media, you scared of them, when you actually meet them, that fear goes away.
But learning more about the EU I became concerned about constraints on sovereignty. Especially in regards to the Euro, and proposals that the EU have its own army. Some people in Europe want a United States of Europe, and that's not what we signed up for. Nor is it very democratic, a lot of decisions happen back-door, by people that the public know nothing about - ask the former finance minister for Greece just how democratic he found the EU when he went to negotiate with them about Greece's bankruptcy. So I changed to wanting to leave.
Now I'm not sure either way, I don't know what would be the most beneficial. It's all anybody's best guess. I'm worried that it will lead to the breakdown of the UK Union, because the nations that make up the UK are so divided on the issue. Even tho I am vehemently opposed to the Conservative party generally, I must admit I admire May in this, she has a difficult job of trying to please both sides at once (leave/remain deal/no deal), and the EU leaders as well, and there's no way for her to win in a situation like that, but she's doing the best job she can.

Then again there is a legitimate feeling of uncertainty with how the whole immigration situation has developed.

Frankly if women haven't done enough to knock men off the top 10 spot, as paid for by the open marketplace (ie. viewers and advertisers) how is that someone else's fault? Indeed what is she asking for, should we watch more women solely because of a gender war or should we simply ask advertisers to spend more money with a less effective advertisement? Either way I don't see how the problem is anyone else's fault but the creators. If I were to make a video I wouldn't want free money thrown at me for having boobs.
Frankly if anything I feel that women have an innate advantage over men on youtube anyway. At one point I was above 2000 subscribers without ever having made a video or any form of content. The UA-cam pay issue is a classic case of _equality of opportunity_ vs. _equality of outcome._
There is full equality between the genders when it comes to *opportunity,* so the only way to achieve an equal *outcome* is to handicap certain people because of their gender (in this case men) in order to artificially create an “equality” which is ironic because that method in itself is discriminatory and unequal.

Men don’t have to lose anything for women to gain something. I dont think she’s bashing men or saying they shouldn’t be up there. Just noticing a trend.
Did men lose rights when the women suffrage movement happened? No
Did men lose money when women started joining the work force? No

Anytime someone virtue signals so blatantly with the "If I have to deal with attacks just because I stand up for (insert group), then I'll accept that hate because I'm such a good, strong person!", it makes it excruciatingly obvious that they're just playing X card and trying to get good publicity for it.
If someone brags about how good they are or what they're doing on their high horse, everyone can see it. For some reason, they never seem to realize that it's so transparent.

@@linkplayer20 It is signaling, like making public statements/videos/etc, about an issue or non-issue in society to make the person appear virtuous (like having moral superiority over others)

@- - Uh... No. Not even close. It is anyone of any color, gender, orientation, etc that does it. It has nothing to do with who the person is, it has to do with what they're doing. I honestly have no idea how you even got that interpretation from what I said. Nothing I said had anything to do with minority status or sex of the person.

As a Brit, the ENTIRE Brexit situation is incredibly confusing for a lot of people. The initial votes were incredibly close, the current Parliament is in pieces, Scots and Brits are growing further apart and the unrest in Ireland is increasing daily. Looking at some (usually biased/skewed) statistics I can see how it would be easy for someone from a different country to say what they would expect of us.
In all honesty, I would usually agree that once a vote is made the result should be stuck by. But I don't know a single Leave voter that hasn't said they want a second referendum because they've changed their minds now. A good majority of that side of voters were manipulated by propaganda and lies. Yes, the country and its Parliament is in a shambles. But what is currently being argued is certainly no longer representative of the publics' desires, and it truly disappoints me that people living in other countries, who don't experience this unrest on a daily basis, feel the need to arrogantly weigh in with broad arguments that they, themselves couldn't possibly understand.

SO about the women on youtube thing... It's true that youtube is less moderated than the 'big media'. However it's worth investigating WHY there aren't as many female top creators. I'm a woman and I watch a lot of youtube. The majority is male produced, since I'm definitely not interested in make up tutorials. I rarely see women produced content about things like science, film reviews, tech and etc - things I watch. And I think I have an idea about why:
I have a female friend who works in a small phone reviewing company and they have a youtube channel. The difference between the responses for her videos and the vidoes of her male colleagues are HUGE. Firstly, the company was reluctant to let he make video reviews in the first place, because 'the viewers might not see a girl reviewer as credible'. And secondly, the majority of the comments are about her looks (both positive and negative) and the fact that she's a girl. The majority of the comments on her colleagues videos' are about the content and their performance. She also has to make sure she has the least possible amount of visual blemishes in order to avoid the backlash. A zit on her male colleagues' friend is whatever. A zit on her face is 100 comments of 'you're so ugly' and etc. She has to avoid looking too girly to look credible. You can say that this comes with the job of a female youtuber', and all people get negative comments, but why should it? I wouldn't want to be seen as just a 'female'. I'd never go on youtube for precisely this reason. I'd want to be seen as a person...
I think women on youtube are branded first as women, sexualized and judged on it, and only then as people. The unregulated comments (I'm not saying they should be regulated) allow for a lot of gender-based harassment and this deters women form making video content about things other than women-specific topics (where they're allowed to have expertise), like make-up and fashion, where the viewers are mostly other women. Just my two scents. It's easy to bash youtube or an imaginary patriarchy enemy, but the problem here are the viewers themselves, both men and sometimes other women.. Personally, when I heard a female's voice in ScreenPrism's (film & tv essays) videos, I assumed the female speaking is just a VO artist, and not the content creators... When I found out that they make them I was surprised. And I'm a woman myself... UA-cam is an inhospitable place for women. It's not as simple as 'women are just not doing the work". That's bull* I know of so many women who'd are interested in and would produce amazing content that would never even consider putting up with the feedback and community responses.

The rise of the alt right and so many manosphere, red pill and anti sjw propaganda has a lot to do with this thing. I watch screen prism too and I love them. And I totally agree with you that a lot of women are discouraged to create contents that aren't female dominated as I see a lot of comments saying girls shouldn't do anything that is men dominated, like gaming, skepticism, movie reviews etc. They're automatically seen as thots and only doing it for attention. As if a girl can't be interested in anything other than girly shit. I follow so many channels on UA-cam that are unrelated to each other, makeup gurus, film/movie reviews, reactions, skeptics, news, satire etc. Almost as if a person can be interested in a lot of things and not just things that are common about his/her gender.

Very interesting comment. I will point out though, men creators are also judged on how they look and how "hot" they are by a lot of women. Here on YT, the whole appearance thing is a thing regardless of sex, simply because the creators are on camera. The same as in main stream video. As for women making primarily videos on women specific content, that is their choice. They can create whatever content they want, and I must say, as a woman, that we are way more critical of ourselves and other women than men are. Way more. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason a lot of women don't choose STEM topics for their content is because they believe that it will be way harder for them to do so from other people-again, most likely women-telling them so. I also believe that if they were to start making STEM content, and then quit, it will be more due to their own (sub)conscious doubts, than any harsh comment from either gender. We are the more emotional gender and allow those types of comments to hurt us more and discourage us from further pursuing making that content.
Also, make-up or fashion channels can make huge amounts of money and have the ability to set trends. Not a bad deal in my opinion. To me (please correct me if I'm wrong), it sounds as if you are bashing the women who choose to do that type of content. Like it is beneath a woman to do such things, when in fact, we are the most qualified gender to do those. The topics of fashion and make-up are indeed the most watched by women because we as women are more likely to use the information than men.
Finally, YT is not inhospitable for women. The amount of views depends mostly on how old a channel is, a creator's personality, how they approach different topics, the content itself and YT's algorithm (which can't be sexist as it is lines of code working within certain parameters). Women can make it here on UA-cam if we want by being a bit stubborn, being able to laugh at ourselves, being able to look at ourselves objectively (neither too harshly, nor through femi-nazi eyes) and be willing to make changes if need be (not as in content necessarily, but perhaps how we approach different things). It also helps to have fairly thick skin (and by that I mean that we become/are stone cold-hearted bitches, I mean where we don't let others' view of us mean so damn much), and having a lot of self-confidence.
The ability to just let loose and have fun with the topic(s) and helping to make it(them) fun, interesting and easy for others to understand without being condescending is also a valuable.

The only advantages men have on youtube is that they are not as naturally agreeable or as sensitive on average as, us, women. If women didn't care to insult other women on appearance or be insulted then more women would both be content creators and consumers. However, I don't think being more masculine in those areas is nessecarily fullfilling or recomendable for women. Rather, understanding and appreaciating the average differences between men and women would serve everyone more in the long term.

@@thomassowellaudiobooks6441 & @fearlesslife21 I have watched my friend delete dozens upon dozens of insulting and sexualized comments from her videos. You don't see them, because they have to be vigilantly deleted, one by one. They are mostly from men, not other women. Men very much do care what women are wearing. Just because you're a decent guy / have decent guy friend doesn't mean that's what other people are like, especially on-line. The part where you think women are more critical of each other - that's true to an extent. But the judgment from men is worse, by far. It sounds like you have some anecdotal experience, because women tend to openly criticize each other in person more, while men tend to openly criticize women on-line more. UA-cam is very inhospitable for women. I've seen it first hand and that's what my whole rant was about.
