Do you think the Will Smith Genie will be able to hold its own compared to Robin Williams' legendary creation of the role? Hmmm. Let me know your thoughts!

Hi daddy
My issue with Aladdin is not Will Smith's Genie being blue, but the fact that the guy playing Aladdin is HELLA UNATTRACTIVE! That's ruined for me!
So sinbad did make a genie movie called shazzam, I knew it was real!
I for one still appreciate your show more when it doesn't have sponsor spots. much love sxephil
So good to see a UA-camr like Will Smith make it in a mainstream movie
😂😂😂
LMAO
That's hot
Sarcasm level 99999
People are mad at the guy for his race over a fake country.
No ones mad at the model lol he had no control over how people would react to him, I think people are outraged more over the significance of Black Panther being a character specifically for being race orientated to uplift a marginalized group, the country being fictitious is not relevant to to the reaction, but it is in the context in which the fiction happens and why it happens. (You get it, civil rights... etc yadayadayada)

Isn't it racist that white people cannot model black panther merch, that's ironic.
I can't tell if this user is being sarcastic or not. Isn't it racism to not allow someone to wear something based on the color of their skin.
That tweet's a joke...
It’s almost like they’re racist... hmmmm
It's like if people were mad about a black person wearing a "Valhalla forever" top.
I'm slightly disappointed that you called Bao their weirdest short film. I thought it perfectly depicted how life as an aging Chinese mom was going through "empty nest syndrome". As an Canadian-born Chinese, I identified with the son. The "dumpling son" was created to symbolize how her own son grew up really quickly and had left the house to pursue his own life. Many asian moms are overprotective of their child, like not letting her "dumpling son" play soccer because she was afraid of him getting hurt. Reminded me of how my mom didn't let me play hockey growing up. Also, asian parents rarely verbally express their love and it is most commonly expressed through cooking which is what was done in the short film. I feel like I am in this exact scenario as I am leaving home for grad school so this is kinda a short that really hits home. I think the film was trying to emphasize the mother's desire to relive her son's childhood and the whole growing up process. It also tackles the son returning home and sharing a favourite food with his mom, which is how we say we love each other. And I'm not offended by your opinion Phil because I have been watching you for well over a decade but I definitely see this was catered towards the Chinese-Canadian/American audience so not all demographics will understand it since this was created by a Chinese-Canadian. So I just thought I would share the thought process behind this short and take the weirdness out of it? Thanks for all the awesome content you always put out consistently and you're still only one of the few UA-camrs I watch religiously. :)
I hope you don't mind me throwing my two cents in! As someone who is not Chinese/Does not have Chinese heritage I still found Bao to be a heartbreakingly beautiful story and I was also disappointed at Phil's reaction. The animation, music and overall storyline were touching and clearly representative of a deeply human and personal story. That many, including myself, can relate to. As someone with older parents knowing that I'll be leaving the nest soon, it made me reflect on how I treat my parents now. It's fantastic to hear how much this short film means to you and the more subtle intricacies of the relationship and Chinese culture that I most definitely missed!
@@bonnie-gracemacklin1889 Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the short too! Glad to see that it touched hearts multi-culturally as well! :) Good luck with leaving your nest and I wish your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
I 100% agree! I’m not chinese but I am of Asian decent and this definitely is one of Pixar’s most relatable short films. It makes me a bit sad to see that so many people missed the allegory the film and dismissed it off as being weird :(
Yeah, bc a mother eating her food son is normal
I don't think it's the dumpling son that's the issue. Pixar covers that stuff anyway. It's the fact she ate her son.
"what company are people angry about today" lmao
You always comment on every gmm video.
Wasn’t funny but okay
To true tho
Forever 21 should be apologizing for making a butt ugly sweater, the model they chose is irrelevant.
word
!!! this
Ugly Christmas sweaters are highly fashionable.
I feel like is was ugly on purpose.
I was looking for this comment that I was going to post. Thank you.
And caring for what model color they choose, is racist.
I choose this time to see who is racist and who isn't.
I always get called out on looking like either superman, or wolverine, which both don't look alike, but I've never been called a Thor. I don't have blue eyes and blond hair. Doesn't mean I can't wear Thor gear.
(choosing hair color and eye color is pointing out color of skin shouldn't matter. What if that white model is a huge fan?)
(Not that I'd wear superhero shirts in public, but I got two superman and venom.)
Here's the "Can I wear Wakanda stuff?" hierarchy; Do you like Black Panther and the vibe of the cool Afro-futurism? You can wear the gear. If you think only black people should wear it or even make the salute... wow you missed the whole point of what Wakanda tries to be. If you claim cultural appropriation on anything, do you realise you're endorsing segregation and anti-diversity? Sure be protective and proud, hold your culture's use by others to a standard, but educate don't discriminate. Fact is though the only people I ever see being overly sensitive to their perceived cultural heritage are those who have never travelled, have very limited bubbles and are the least worldly people you could meet. ie no perspective.
@Anas Braham When this stuff angers me I certainly feel that way. But as an old school nerd, one of the things I am most proud of is that we are actually the most accepting of new blood and have been forever (any chance to talk about the things we love right). So the newbies should count themselves lucky the reports of old nerds "gate-keeping" are not actually real for the majority.
Afro futurism is racist.
I agree with this comment so much. The only people I ever see endorsing these ideas are people with no perspective. What is the point of holding culture hostage? Why can't people of all races just enjoy things without it being a problem? This attitude is so ugly to me, and I can't stand how we are going back in time with these ideas. To me it's not even a race thing. It's a nerd thing. I love superheroes, and if anyone told me I couldn't wear a certain hero shirt because I was black I'd be like what the heck. Black* Panther wasn't even made by a black person.....So stupid
You can't culturally appropriate a fictional culture from a fictional country created by two Jewish dudes. And if you're gonna scream cultural appropriation on the internet, you might want to look at who created the first computers, who created the phone, who created the Internet and since Phones basically are mini tv's, who created the TV. Because if you're screaming cultural appropriation over a fictional country's fictional culture, You might not want to be culturally appropriating another cultures technology in order to do that.
That would be true if their wasn't so much hypocrisy when done in reverse not to mention the history of exclusion of colored folk when it came to anything. Please don't be hypocrite with this double speak.
Wait, did I just hear that we outlawed the "the shackling of women during childbirth"? Who is shackling women during childbirth lol
And nice to hear they finally will get access to clean tampons in prison... Honestly would not have believed someone if they told me that that wasn't already the case.
@@Gravewhisper lol, only dirty tampons for the felons 😂
Pregnant inmates who give birth are often shackled to the birthing bed to protect medical staff. It’s considered cruel and inhuman by many and has been highly debated for sometime.
Fun fact, women in the 1950’s into the 1960’s were also often shackled to beds during births. This was called ‘twilight birth’ where women were heavily sedated and strapped to bed while they laboured. Medical staff claimed it was the healthiest and safest method and claimed they were saving women from the trauma of childbirth and that the women no longer had to remember the act of childbirth. In reality the sedation was poorly monitored and women often were left for hours, if not days, to labour in a state of half consciousness at times in their own filth and unable to communicate or were ignored. It continued for so long due to the era and the shame these women often felt. Luckily twilight birth fell out of favour as more women became aware and empowered in the late 1960’s and 1970’s.
@@jessicah9311 that is a horrible "fun fact", and a practice that needs to stop in prisons.
@@jessicah9311 That's a very interesting/horrible fact. I think there might could be some scenarios where cuffs would be necessary (you never know how horrible some people can be, or what they might do), but I don't think it should be required by any means
As a black male I can literally not care less about forever 21 having a white guy in a wakanda forever sweater or any gear for that matter it doesn't offend me in the slightest... swear we be heated over nothing nowadays....no this isn't cultural appropriation and no this is not racist....now people react differently to things I understand that but come on people....
I think there really needs to be a discussion within our own community if we are going to culturally horde and remain othered or if we should capitalize on the popularity of "black stuff" and move forward towards equality.
I mean, no one says shit about my braids now..... mostly because of it becoming mainstream and accepted. I remember not being allowed to have protective styles in elementary school because it was against dress code. I would prefer cultural integration so my kids dont deal with the same shit.
Of course, it isn't cultural appropriation (for one, that isn't a thing) because it was written by two white guys. People need to understand that Black Panther isn't black/African culture. If anything, it is American culture.
I mean, the picture itself isn’t racist, but the black people saying only black people can wear Wukanda gear are 😂

I like how that Forbes list said “we want this list to be people who got rich off their fame” and then put Kylie Jenner in the same list as Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan the two greatest athletes in their respective fields who spent their entire life practicing day in and day out to become the best. Kylie was born pretty and into a wealthy family... not exactly the same Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan yes they have built wealth on their fame just like Kylie but HUGE difference in how they earned that fame. Just a thought, pretty pointless list in my opinion.
This is what circulates racism!
I mean, as a "black captain america fan" whos actually attended comic shots in a 300 dolar civil war suite only receiving compliments I'm disappointed that other blacks would sooner be upset over a white person modeling FOR black panther clothing line.. I agree so much with this. I always thought that we were all Americans first (speaking to my nation right now) and that our ancestors fought for us to be united as people. Sometimes when I look the way people act today and it's almost as if some people want us all to feel segregated. I hate this idea that seems to be perpetuating that people are their skin color. I feel like it's insane that I have to even say that in 2018.
This guy gets it. You don't bring people together by putting up more barriers.
It's cherry picking at its finest. People were saying black panther was so important because it was the 1st black super hero movie. Dude, wtf about blade?! Blade was bad ass. Bring back Wesley Snipes as Blade marvel!
Everyone forgets about Spawn too. The movie wasn't great, but it's still something.

Glad to hear he's blue in the movie, though.
Indeed. Williams' Genie can't and never will be outdone. And we all know how an actor trying to do the discount R.W. Genie just doesn't work. Oh please, if Wakanda WAS real and had actually sit out of the Civil Rights movement and didn't interfere during Slavery, you'd have a lot Kilmongers
@Namelessandpure Wasn't that T'Challa's point and why he yelled at his ancestors for doing nothing and turning their backs on the world? And how their insistence on keeping Wakanda a secrete led to them abandoning Eric the child who grew up to be Killmonger.
@Namelessandpure
The thing is... was Wakanda this super advanced place during the time these events were happening though? Would they have actually been in a position to "Do anything?" Also, let's not kid ourselves, Killmonger's biggest motivator for taking over was that with his father being the eldest son of the king, the throne technically SHOULD be his and he felt entitled to it, having been cheated... the rest is utter fluff so he could sleep at night thinking he was "Doing a good thing." Don't get me wrong, all that aside, he was a pretty cool character, nevertheless. Definitely had more depth than T'Challa. Though the complexity of villains and inserting the doubt of whether they're actually "bad" people, is one major advantage Marvel has had over DC for many decades.
Rest in peace Robin Williams, you'll always be our genie! 💜
He has been set free! Robin is a free genie.
Just like heath ledger will be the best joker ever.. doesnt mean the joker should never be used in another movie.. we need to just appreciate it and move on.
If a white person isn't allowed to wear Wakanda merch then a black person shouldn't be allowed to cast a James Bond.
On a personal note, my cousin was in jail for 3 years and got an early release. He was put in a halfway house, got a union job, and had to go to a few AA meetings a week. He had been given his freedom early but the idea of living in a halfway house and doing chores pissed him off. He got picked up for breaking his parole and running from the law. Got 14 months back in. Its not about the charge and how “small” it is, but the person who does the crime. They might just not be able to function in a community even with being given a place to live and a good way of life.
Y’all know Will Smith cannot be Robin Williams right?
It’s a catch 22. No-win situation. No one can be Robin Williams so no matter who played the genie no one was going to be happy with it.
That's not really a catch 22
Hmmm. I sort of feel like the genie is actually a fictional character who was portrayed by Robin Williams. If George Clooney wanted to play him, followed by Christian Bale and Ben Affleck, he will still be a fictional character and each will only be slightly different versions that everyone will have a regurgitated opinion on. Oh well...
I mean, he isn’t played by Robin Williams on the stage show version, and that is still an excellent piece of entertainment.
I think it'll be interesting. I just don't want Will Smith to be playing Will Smith. He's talented as an actor but annoyingly doesn't challenge himself enough to take on roles of oddity
Its funny cause a few people I know forgot that Robbin Williams didnt do Aladdin 2 and it did okay and didnt sound bad.
It's a real shame, stan Lee just wanted to make people happy, and yet all people can see is each others skin color.

I'm not mad about the model, it's hilarious. As a marketing strategy though, just because of how sensitive and PC culture is right now, it wasn't smart. The only thing that can stop the cycle is someone deciding to be the bigger person and at the very least having the willpower to leave the circle jerk. Who cares about a couple of tweets from people offended by a sweater? We get it "outrage culture has gone too far" ugh everyone just shut up especially those claiming to be on the more logical side of the argument. Practice what you preach and get the fuck over it, it's getting more annoying than the faux outrage stuff at this point.
@Nilly Sigger Companies are getting bullied? That's just called capitalism. If people don't want to buy from a company because they employ someone that they find very offensive (and again we have no control over how someone else feels whether we deem it right or wrong) they have a right to get on a soapbox and declare that they will not support that company. If enough people feel that way then it makes sense that a company would choose to keep thousands or even just hundreds of customers as opposed to one employee. People have been fired for far less. That's just how this economic system works.
In retaliation, you could form a boycott of companies that fire employees for "moral" reasons or out of fear of economic loss. If you can get more people to boycott than the other side, then you'd probably win. The problem is, it is much easier and there is much more incentive to fight for something that feels like a personal attack than to organize against the feeling that people are being "too PC". The SJW's have more energy because a lot of them really feel personally offended.
As an average citizen, you get only 2 flexes of power, economic and voting. If you thought someone was threatening your rights or personhood, this would be the only real path to justice. It doesn't matter whether you agree with their stance or not, they feel the way they feel and probably won't be convinced otherwise. They are doing exactly what the system is designed for. If you don't like it you can try to beat them at their own game. However, it gets hard to continue to exert that people care too much by showing all the signs of caring too much. You'll always come off hypocritical and just as sensitive as the people you are calling too sensitive. It will always be a more annoying version of "I know you are but what am I" echo chamber.
If your end goal is to make people who are offended stop being offended by telling them they aren't allowed to be offended, because you think they are too sensitive-- you're in a losing battle. This is why telling a sensitive person that they are too sensitive usually just makes them either cry or get mad. There's no use, and it just makes me think that people like you are just as sensitive only about different things.
Chill news day, I like it
Less than 4 minutes in, and my favorite part of the whole video is the picture Phil used to show Elon Musk. hahahah I love it!
The shade of the model’s whiteness likely wasn’t on the marketers minds or even slightly considered. It’s just too bad that the shade of one’s skin is the only thing that matters to the people partaking in the outrage. But somehow forever 21 stand accused of being the racists, interesting how that works.
Tell me about it 😂 I swear, these 'SJW' types are more racist than the supposed nationalist/fascist they claim to be fighting lol
I'm sorry but this is not entirely right. This is an advertisement where a product is being shown. The skin colour most definitely plays a role since it gives a certain look to the product. Making it look better or worse depending what colours are in play. So of course skin colour can't be ignored since it will make your product look a certain way. That said: this might as well be the new way ads work: do something you know some snowflakes will be offended about and they'll make you famous for, then just apologize and you basically had free advertisement.
I guarantee the race, skin tone, hair color, gender, and everything you see was considered. Everything yoi see on t.v. or newspapers have been made the way they look for very specific reasons. They could have easily done this on purpose to go viral. I do find.it odd that the model is extremely pale almost as if they were mocking.
@gillysuit2 well not really. It's not racist to realise or state that different races have different type of skin colour which goes better with certain colours. Certain colours look better on certain skins. When you advertise your product you want it to look best so you'll have people modeling for it that make it look best. I'm not saying skin colour is the only criteria obviously but it is one of many, along with other features of models. It's the same reason models on catwalks are that thin, it's because designers want their products to be shown the best way possible. And they look best on very thin bodies. At least most of them and at least in their opinion and they're the designers so I wouldn't argue that. And in that case people talk about fat shaming when it's not, it's about showing the product in the best possible way. Do you understand what I mean now?
@@chrisreid9227 There were people mad about a model's skin color. How is this ok, ever? Black model, white model, whatever. Seems like we have lost racial progress in the last decade.

ScreenJunkies had a really interesting video this morning where they discussed the whole Will Smith Genie situation where they pointed out the significance of Robin Williams playing the character. Time after time, people have said that no one can replace Williams as the character, which I think Disney realizes and have taken on board, perhaps leading to this different interpretation of the character. Will Smith doesn't look like he's trying to be or replace Robin Williams, which he shouldn't . If he tried to be that Genie, there would be even more outrage. Disney is putting a twist on the character, taking it in a different direction to the iconic Robin Williams take on the character, which I think is a good idea

I have a problem with the Forever 21 backlash. This is not a battle worth fighting. It is a model wearing branded merch. He's not the spokesman for Disney's black panther department. No one is getting mad when a colored woman wears caption America merch. Following the megan Kelly controversy I taught my boyfriend (28, white) why black face matters. Why you can dress up as the black panther even though you're white as long as you dont put brown paint on your face. I told him about how alive racism still is. He didn't know. I'm his only black friend. He's not exposed at all, so you can't be mad at his ignorance. He thought he was woke just for not caring about being in an interracial relationship. But getting mad about a model wearing clothes? Disney merch for a fictional country's slogan? This is a set back.
Hopefully you won’t be guilting him out of existence

100 comments about the sweater for every 1 about the changes to the prison system, which is far more important. And you wonder why outrage culture won't go away?
What are the odds that people will know enough about a topic as convoluted as the American "justice" system to contribute to a discussion on a public site. Moreover one that people from outside the US can post on aswell. Their problems are not the world's problem so people find it easier to contribute to a simpler topic. Just my 2 cents
The sooner outrage culture goes away, the sooner real outrageous issues are front & center.
I am outraged with outrage culture
You are missing the forest for the trees. Because so many people are racist and won't admit it (ie everyone complaining about the white model) we have more problems than anything that could be solved by prison reform. The racists cause outrage mobs and protests so that people can't communicate honestly anymore, which expands the divide between the people, and the data is showing that is making them go further to the left, which will cause more outrage mobs, and continue the cycle.

In designing a criminal justice system, there are two end-goals (that doesn't have to, but sometimes do, conflict with each other). Those two goals are: 1) *punishment* and 2) *reform.*
The design can be focused on achieving both goals. Or it can be focused more on achieving one over the other. Another possibility is that it doesn't aim for either, and/or it fails to achieve either, and thus it is essentially dysfunctional.
Getting mad at a company for using a model is RACISM. It's literally the definition of racism - blaming someone for the color of their skin....whoever is best fit & best qualified for the job should get the gig - NOT because of what race they are...

@@typhoonzebra got em
On the prison bill, im a corrections officer and i went to school for criminal justice. I learned those same staggering stats on recidivism in school. However with experience i can say now that they are very misleading. Many people commit small offenses on purpose during the winter to stay for the colder months if they are poor or if they need to eat/sleep. Also many come in for medical care, dental is a big one and so is childbirth. So its not that the system is broken, it is the only way some people see to survive. Theres also a lot of other reasons people come back on purpose, making contacts for dealing drugs, networking ect. Not trying to make some kind of argument it just astonished me when i saw people would go to jail on purpose, and its a topic today so figured id give my 2 cents.
That may be true, but if you look at countries like Sweden they have far less criminals going back to jail a second time and they are in a geographically colder region of the world (maybe not as cold as Alaska, but colder than most of the US) with prison cells that resemble hotel rooms... Yet less prisoners return to the prisons... There are many factors for this that are not necessarily rehabilitation, but rehabilitation DOES help with getting those prisoners who are poor better skills to get employed so they don't need to spend winter locked up...
There are other reasons, like I am sure without even needing to look at statistics that Sweden has far less of a homeless population, but that's also something America could potentially take steps towards improving as well... The US could also figure out a system of healthcare that can't make a middle class family suddenly in debt due to medical fees that pay for one family member who has cancer... I couldn't believe it when Totalbiscuit's wife said she was like half a million in debt or something crazy as a result of her husband's cancer treatments which really didn't even save his life (and may have even shortened it, since chemotherapy is quite damaging to the body... It's a race to kill the cancer before the patient is killed by radiation or the cancer...)
Anyway, I basically agree, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce the amount of impoverished folk going to prison and rehabilitating them to ensure they have the skills to do a job is giving them a much better chance than basically releasing them back onto the street with, if anything, a deficit of skills at their disposal after having just sat around in a prison cell for 15 years or so... It's not going to solve everything, but I think it is a step in the right direction...
@@RabbitTalk That's basically the Scandinavian prison system in a nutshell. Up there, the recidivism rate is 20 percent on average, and it's actually going down.

I'm a black female & the mainstream audience taking this Black Panther movie WAY too seriously. Blank Panther is a fictional comic book character, Wakanda is a fictional location created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee two dead white men. It does not matter who wear these Wakanda sweaters or shirts. People getting angry over fairytale/fictional things is beyond silly. It's as if a group of people would get angry with models for wearing I love Atlantis shirt b/c Aquaman is coming out. Nobody should get upset if someone wears an I love Gotham shirt, Wakanda Forever shirt or Superman can find me in Metropolis shirt. These are fictional places. Sidenote there are people looking up Wakanda to see if they can find it on an African map, people also try to book flights to Wakanda thinking it is real. This is peak stupidity.

I am so happy about the justice reform progress. It's a bit small but progress.
Someone said it in the comments below but I want to expand on it: Companies know exactly what they are doing. They know what makes you mad, they do a lot of research. They know that anger drives up clicks and clicks get eyes on merch. So they stir up some anger, get tons of people to hear about their product for way cheaper than it would have cost to put out tons of ads. Then they can issue an apology, make a change and oh look! everything is fine, because everyone forgets about it until the next outrage comes along. They're marketing outrage and I've said it before and I'll keep saying it. They found a way to turn anger into profit and it wont stop anytime soon because... they turned anger into profit. You find a way to bottle lightning you don't just stop.
Hey Joseph, I know it might sound insane. But I got tutoring from companies and the rabbit hole goes deeper than you think. They told us about many morally-questionable strategies, and how they monitor not just everything related to their brand, but YOU, by name. The manipulation of customers was a recurring theme, and while we really can't know for sure, it's very believable this was all planned.
^ I’m in marketing & trust me there are so many terms for campaigns like this. Forever 21 and many fast fashion brands will do something like this because it brings people to their website without having to spend money on actual ads. I always advise people to take at least 1 marketing class in college because it will show you how manipulating companies are & to them it’s part of the job so they don’t think twice.
You cant stop a company doing outrage tactics, its easier to ignore the people getting outraged, those lonely miserable people who want any snippet of attention will shut up if people stop caring so much.
The Genie's main characteristic is how charismatic he is. Will Smith can be charismatic and is a completely different actor to Robin Williams. The best way Disney can pull this new version off is to give us a completely different but still likeable Genie rather than recreate the original.
