Wow. As a private pilot in USA I am amazed how Dubai aviation is so advanced. Thanks for sharing. I remembered being a student in Morocco in early 70’s and the school trip that I treasured for life was a trip our French language teacher took us to visit Casablanca Control Tower that dream never left my My hunger to become a pilot. Thanks Monsieur Paraire for teaching me how to dream big. May you Rest In Peace.
This is nothing but an experience I had one time in 2016 when I flew to the Dubai International Airport. As you all know, Dubai is in a desert, and it rarely ever rains, but that day there had been an insane rain shower. Since there's no sewers in Dubai, everything was flooded, including the runways. So we ended up circulating around the airport for at least half an hour before we could land, and I just found it funny how everything was so chaotic only because of rain. I'm from Denmark, so I'm used to it, but it's a totally different thing in Dubai. I also remember that we could see all the other planes in line behind us after we'd landed, and it made me realize how many aircrafts actually land in Dubai every day. It's a lot. But anyway, I just wanted to share it because I've flown to Dubai plenty of times, but this is the one time that really stands out to me. Thanks for reading :)
Hi, Sam,, thanks for bringing this opportunity for the normal people who r not working at the airport and they r not aware of it that how the air traffic is controlled. im proud of it that i have worked at Dubai airport as an engineer for almost 17 years in Air Traffic Control Tower. i joined the Dubai airport in 2002 and worked till Feb 2019.. hell of difference between 2002 and 2019 Dubai airport. it was a golden era of my life to work at such a nice place, Dubai airport. latest equipment, skilled personnel and effective management which made this happen.
My son lived in Mirdif which is on the flight path for DXB we would sit on the roof top of his house and watch the approach and departures. He now lives in NZ so no longer have the opportunity. Love Dubai and love DXB.
Well done Sam! That was a really comprehensive behind the scenes look at the whole operation. People usually don't think about the tech ops side of it, and it was really interesting to see the server room required to run the ATC part, along with all the rest!
i was at first shocked to see rackmount Sun servers in there, but then i remembered that those systems are so complex they need years to build and test before running for another long period. load issues aren't really common since it's sized to the job from the start. (with rarest exceptions)
There are 3 types of ATCs : ground control, departure/approach control , and radar control. First manages the ground operations (taxi, runway selection, terminal clearance, etc), second manages landing / takeoff and it's local to the airport like the first one. Radar control is for traffic transiting the country's airspace.
There are waaay more than 3 positions. Depending airports, you might have : Delivery, apron, ground, planner, aerodrome, dep/app and radar. Now that's just for civilian traffic. If you add military one, you get even more positions, like precision app, mil guidance, tactical atco and so on.. But usually the guy managing landings, departures and all movements on the runway is absolutely not the approach controller. It's the ADC, or aerodrome controller.
In the US, you generally have three types of facilities: ATCT, TRACONS and ARTCC. ATCT= Airport Traffic control towers, TRACON= Terminal radar approach control, ARTCC= Air route traffic control center. Lots of facilities are either of these three or combinations. Within each facility, there are a multitude of positions. Ex: MIA is a combination tracon and atct or what we call an up-down.
