    It has been my dream of over 7 years in the UAE to visit the Dubai Air Traffic Control tower. There were times I thought it was almost impossible and giving up. My persistence paid off finally! I was shown all the scenes at Dubai Air Traffic Control. Never give up your dream! Work hard towards the goal!

    This is nothing but an experience I had one time in 2016 when I flew to the Dubai International Airport. As you all know, Dubai is in a desert, and it rarely ever rains, but that day there had been an insane rain shower. Since there's no sewers in Dubai, everything was flooded, including the runways. So we ended up circulating around the airport for at least half an hour before we could land, and I just found it funny how everything was so chaotic only because of rain. I'm from Denmark, so I'm used to it, but it's a totally different thing in Dubai. I also remember that we could see all the other planes in line behind us after we'd landed, and it made me realize how many aircrafts actually land in Dubai every day. It's a lot. But anyway, I just wanted to share it because I've flown to Dubai plenty of times, but this is the one time that really stands out to me. Thanks for reading :)

    Well done Sam! That was a really comprehensive behind the scenes look at the whole operation. People usually don't think about the tech ops side of it, and it was really interesting to see the server room required to run the ATC part, along with all the rest!

    • @udirt
      @udirt 2 роки тому

      i was at first shocked to see rackmount Sun servers in there, but then i remembered that those systems are so complex they need years to build and test before running for another long period. load issues aren't really common since it's sized to the job from the start. (with rarest exceptions)

  • @jokerash
    @jokerash 5 років тому +84

    There are 3 types of ATCs : ground control, departure/approach control , and radar control. First manages the ground operations (taxi, runway selection, terminal clearance, etc), second manages landing / takeoff and it's local to the airport like the first one. Radar control is for traffic transiting the country's airspace.

    • @YoanGraf
      @YoanGraf 2 роки тому +6

      There are waaay more than 3 positions. Depending airports, you might have : Delivery, apron, ground, planner, aerodrome, dep/app and radar. Now that's just for civilian traffic. If you add military one, you get even more positions, like precision app, mil guidance, tactical atco and so on..
      But usually the guy managing landings, departures and all movements on the runway is absolutely not the approach controller. It's the ADC, or aerodrome controller.

    • @sliferxxxx
      @sliferxxxx 2 роки тому +5

      In the US, you generally have three types of facilities: ATCT, TRACONS and ARTCC. ATCT= Airport Traffic control towers, TRACON= Terminal radar approach control, ARTCC= Air route traffic control center. Lots of facilities are either of these three or combinations. Within each facility, there are a multitude of positions. Ex: MIA is a combination tracon and atct or what we call an up-down.

All this adds to the stress levels. In heavy traffic airports, emergency situations are not very uncommon and one has to keep calm and still maintain a calculating head amidst high stress. The good news is we are given proper rest and relieve periods in shift duties so we can manage stress effectively.

    Thanks Sam for this. I have always wondered / imagined what happens behind the scenes at Airports, especially in the traffic control section. seeing how busy DXB is, I cant help but still wonder how they handle hiccups like delays, mid-taxi cancellations, landing emergencies. and issues like what recently happened in the UK with the drone scare...

    Great video and really informative. Most of the people featured in this video acknowledge how important the team approach is to ensure things run smoothly and that the right people get the right information on time.
    As the ‘Head of ATC Engineering’, I would suggest that Clay Willing attends a leadership & management course!! Reference to ‘his aircraft’ and ‘smooth landings are down to my equipment, bumpy ones are down to the pilot’ was the most arrogant statement I’ve heard for a long time! Seems like he needs to learn that it’s not all about me, it’s about us and our team!!

    from Buffalo NY USA. Fantastic airport - the best planning and technology are visible - planning for the future 5 runways, WOW. Wonderful people. If I were allowed to make a video there I would request to wear native attire out of respect. Dubai - a peaceful Oasis in a troubled part of the world. My kindest greetings and salutations to you all.
