Inside Europe's Busiest Air Traffic Control - Amsterdam
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 січ 2020
- Amsterdam is Europe’s busiest airport, in terms of movements and top 3 in terms of passenger numbers. In 2018, it handled over 70 million passengers, with over 500,000 movements. I visited the Air Traffic Control Tower and Radar Centre in Amsterdam, to find out how the air traffic is managed in one of the busiest European Airports.
The ATC tower controller explains all the working positions, runway configurations and movements inside the ATC tower at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. I was given a behind the scene tour and enjoyed some awesome plane spotting views up in the 101m tower.
Then, I visited the LVNL Radar Centre. A controller explains how the radar controls work. In fact, once the plane leaves the gate it will remain in contact with the tower and many different area controls until it lands and arrives at the gate. The visit gave me a great insight as to how Air Traffic Control works in today’s crowded skies.

As a Dutch pilot flying in and out of Amsterdam on a regular basis, I really enjoyed watching this video tour around various radar control departments. Many familiar voices, but never have seen their faces. Very good work delivered by them; accurate, efficient and always very friendly.
respect voor jullie allen, is echt een gave hoor. ik vind het zo mooi om te zien. alleen begrijp ik niets haha. respect voor al die piloten ook.
What plane do you fly? : )

@@aerodaan Cool! Ik ben cadet op Den Helder op de Militaire traffic control. Na mijn opleiding ben ik AirForce Luitenant 1st class in Surveillance klasse. Mogelijk dat ik bij de reddingsbrigade kom op Schiphol.
So proud of you
The radar controller's explainations were so clear and interesting! You can really tell she loves her job, and is a top expert at it 👍
I agree. She is from South Africa originally with english as her native language, as with all the controllers, she is very fast and bright.
@@SamChui thanks..;)
@@SamChui I could tell from her accent
@@zerobudget124 yeah - at least it was no real dutch accent

The Dutch have got to be some of the nicest people I have ever interacted with. I was transferring through Schiphol a few years back and as I was going through security at the gate, I asked the security officer if I had to take my shoes off. He just looked down at my shoes, looked up at me and said “Well that depends. What’s your shoe size?” with the biggest smile I have ever seen on any airport security officer in the world 😂😂 great attitude!
You are always welcome in The Netherlands, Nasser!

Yeah 100% true. I live in Germany and when i want to smoke weed or just enjoy their nice citys like Hengelo, Groningen, Enschede (hell i LOVE enschede) and so on. thy got Such a nice way to treat strangers

I was a controller at a US enroute center that might be equivalent to what she calls area control in Europe. This woman gave an excellent explanation of how the system operates. Very clear and articulate. I used to enjoy giving tours to visitors and hope I was half as good at explaining the job as she is. Nicely done.
What about the salary of atc in us and Europe ?
@@user-ds7ty8rd6h maybe 400k-500k annualy idk it must be high tho
@@gggf4766 I think that's too high, at least for Europe. Gotta be closer to 100-200k € in Europe I guess, based on a quick research.
@@gggf4766 Waaaay too high. UK starting salary is currently £39,000. With experience, this can rise to around £100,000 at the busiest airports/most demanding roles. £120-30,000 would be about the absolute maximum.
I believe it's slightly better pay in the US.
@@mickeybee you’re right close to the figure, according to Business Insider on UA-cam about Atlanta the worlds busiest airport is $145,000 so I’ll assume airports like LDR, AMS, JFK all do at least $100,000 at the minimum in pay.
This is easily the best ATC video I've seen on UA-cam.
You could clearly hear everyone.
You could read the monitors being shown.
Great questions were asked.
Great people being interviewed.
No unnecessary fluff.
Definately yes bro
And no music overlays
In terms of visuals yes. But in terms of information I would say this video is better ua-cam.com/video/C1f2GwWLB3k/v-deo.html
kempo 95 but it didn’t need to talk about that, that much because it wasn’t about that
The title was not “how does a control tower work” but yes that video is very informative I would have to agree
@@xt7144 the orginal commenter said "best ATC video" which I disagree with because of the reason stated above.
The radar control lady's enthusiasm and passion are raw and truly infectious. Thank God we have such committed and competent professionals keeping us safe in the sky. Thank you for this video Sam.
@ab c she's south african
@ab c She totally has an South African accent. Distant dutch blood.
By far the best view of ATC. Especially the wonderful woman in the radar center who explained things so clearly. Her enthusiasm for ATC, and encouraging people to come into the field was especially nice. The technology in Amsterdam, and the professionalism of the controllers is known worldwide.
LOL! When you are so obsessed with ATC , you start saying "Affirm" in normal conversations! 14:02
That's what our job influence us.. difficult to pronounce numbers with common persons..always comes "niner" or "tree"
I do that ever since…
Just like using the spelling alphabet as done in aviation. Freaks my fellow Dutchmen out.

Someone who answers a question with "affirm" is my kind of person!!
You just know she says it among her friends and family.

The woman interviewed gives that confidence and security feel that I would trust her my life and my kids any day If I actually had any. Marvelous !
There are no shortcuts in ATC. Years of training. Plus everything is organized and has backups, even amount of planes one ATC will handle every hour is managed.
But she sure doesn't think there are any female pilots.
Why is that because shes a woman as you are., how sexist
if you actually had a life ?
Trust no man except God
As a Dutch person who goes to Schiphol regularly, it's so cool to see what's going on behind the scenes. I see that tower so often from the outside, now after all these years I finally know how it looks like from the inside.
Denyo666 raar toch dat er nooit eens een nederlandse zender aandacht aan heeft besteed
Finally? Are there no other video on UA-cam that shows u the inside of tower?

@@fujitofusan not this one. LVNL isn't all that eager to allow visitors inside their facilities unless you have a purpose there as supplier for example.
And even as a supplier it can be a pain.
Wonderful content Sam, these people are unnoticed legends behind the safe journeys of many passengers each day. Tough job but it's really great to see how passionate they are about what they doing.
This video was so amazing. So many people just board a commercial airliner with little knowledge of what it takes to go from A to B. Thanks Sam and all those great people involved.
That lady from the radar control can make a very good teacher. She explains stuff so nicely.
And that while speaking in her second language
Brilliant, Sam, really enjoyed this report. For we avgeeks, any ATC stuff is fascinating. Schipol enjoys a well deserved reputation of excellence. Great work, thanks.
Thank you. I visited Schiphol in December, a friend of mine works there and asked if I like to visit. I was fascinated with the 360 view and asked the PR department of LVNL if I can make a video of how Dutch ATC work. I am glad they're open and up for it so this vlog happened!

Thank you 🙏🏾 so much for this video. It’s great to see what’s going on in the Tower of one of the busiest Airports in the world (one of my favorite too) and for explaining the overall control
structure. 🔝!!
That radar controller broke down the complexity of radar science into little palatable pieces and fed them to us gently, and we absorbed everything so well and that's why we love her❤
It’s like a National Geographic air traffic documentary.

Phenomenal excellent visit with the ATC's in Amsterdam. Thank you for doing this very professional video for us all.
Thanks! I fly to Amsterdam several times a year from Norway as it is just a short stop away and a major hub to anywhere in the world. Always loved Schipol and I have often looked at the control tower and thought the workload in there must be insane. Thanks for the tour, the controllers seemed really professional and friendly.

Fascinating video Sam. The enthusiasm and professionalism of the controllers was so impressive. Thanks once again.
Thanks Sam for this amazing experience. I would never ever imagine i would see all these. Thanks for these videos.

A fascinating behind-the-scenes video Sam, great content. Sat in our seats on ‘planes we really do take it for granted how much work and communication is taking place to keep everything running smoothly. Credit to those who work in this industry, I can’t imagine the skillset and mind required to work such a job. They deserve the high salaries that’s for sure! Keep them coming Mr Chui! :)
Honestly, these controllers are soo professional, their work and their responses to each of your questions. Easily one of you best videos!
This woman is top shelf. Excellent teacher. Not really a trait of everyone.
Fascinating and amazing. Thank you for this!
This radar control lady is the real deal!!! I just loved how she explained everything, with so much competence and passion! Those people are our angels on the ground while we fly and drink coffee! Thank you to all controllers who do their job every day ❤❤❤ i myself got a headache just by looking at those moving dots and numbers.
The way the radar controller says ‘affirm’ @14:03 when Sam explains the tier, I loved it. Very very professional 👍🏻
Awesome video! Loved it! Just so fascinating to see behind the scenes! The people are just amazing!
I always make my stopovers at Schiphol and its fascinating to see how it works from the inside. Thank you for this!
I thoroughly enjoyed the very-informative video on air-traffic control. Thank you, Sam! The controllers explained it clearly.
In every successful takeoff and landing, there is always the hard work of an ATC
i love how they are all laid back and relaxed and doing their jobs like a pros without any sign of stress
Unless they need to assist another sully then yeah I’m sure it’s a smooth riding job
The lady is fabulous she is truly inspiring, in the sense that she loves her job and the simplistic way she explained shows the knowledge. Hats off to you Mam
I love Amsterdam, it’s a beautiful city! But Schipnol is an incredible airport with some awesome spotting opportunities! I’m incredibly jealous of you getting that opportunity to have a bird’s eye view! That was the most informative piece from the woman in radar. Amazing! Thanks for sharing.
Incredibly well done video. The people interviewed are true professionals. It is the people behind the scene, professionals that truly keep everyone safe and they deserve a great deal of respect!
Maggy is so good at her job. Explains everything in detail so simply indeed. Sam Chui in the meantime seems to be so obsessed with only the KLM flights out of all the other aircraft that we have starting from the tower and to the radar control center!
I'm preparing for ATC and this video is so useful. It got me even more excited about the job! Thanks Sam!
Great work. Very informative. The number of hand offs involved in a flight is amazing. Wow! All that done so seamlessly, through so many different organizations, allowing us all to arrive safely at our destinations. Keep up the good work Sam.
An absolute banger of a video thanks Sam and thanks to the great controllers at Schiphol!
Absolutely fabulous. Very informative and the willingness of the airport staff to share this critical and interesting function should be commended. Thank you for your video.

Nice to see that you at Schiphol and at Maastricht euro control, manage to keep all this traffic separated, save and most of the time on schedule.
I just started gaming the best flightsimulator there is, and now I understand ATC much better. And as a Dutch citizen, I'm proud to see how high quality the traffic is handled.
Awww I loved this! What an incredible amount of hard work. These people have to be on and alert 100% of the time. Great video and THANK YOU CONTROLLERS!
Indeed, they work a very intensive hour (could be up to 110 movements) then an hour off. It is a challenging but rewarding job as well.
Very cool video, Sam!
