Haha - something about other people’s discomfort! Good point about the co alarm, I do have one and used it for the first few outings - never went off, so I’ve become a bit complacent - I need to keep it in my stove bag so I’ve always got it! Safety first! Atb, Simon.

Bad weather? I'm assuming you're talking Celcius, right? -5C is a balmy winter afternoon here in Minnesota... -30C is not all that unusual overnight here. He didn't have GLOVES on in the morning? You'd be missing fingers by lunchtime over here, sir. All of that being said, I'd like to try out that tent/stove setup on a cold night here! Looks like it would do the trick!

Simon, enjoyed your video. Just a thought for you. I was sationed in Germany with the U.S. Army when we changed from "C" rations to MREs. We would heat water like you did and heat the pouches in that water. Then use the hot water for coffee, we Yanks don't drink much tea, and it was a way to conserve water. We did this for quite a while before the Army informed us that wasn't a good idea. Seems the boiling water leached some rather harmful chemicals out of the plastic pouches. Didn't kill me but I thought you should know. I think the plastic used for the pouches has been changed since, I certainly hope so. You might want to check on your rations. It was during that time in my Army career that I also perfected the one canteen cup shave, shower, and shampoo. Order is important here. Be well.
Cheers William - don’t want shaving bristles in yer hair haha! That is a very good point about the MREs and one raised by a viewer before. I don’t know if they ever changed the packaging, would seam odd not to - why waste that precious water when you’re probably going to make tea or coffee to go with your meal anyway!! I’ve always done it that way and so far so good - no ill effects (yet!!! Hahaha) I should probably investigate further! Cheers, Simon.
The Polish Army gets nice tents. I wonder what other nice stuff they get. My dad was in the British Army. Our stuff seemed quite rubbish compared to USA, Germany et al. Laughed out loud at your reactions. Well it is late, past midnight. You just seem naturally funny 😄 Thanks for letting me live vicariously in a tent in the middle of winter whilst I’m as snug as a bug in a rug in my bed.
Thank you Stephanie! Some of the old kit issued to soldiers back in the day was certainly heavy and clunky - I wouldn’t have wanted to carry it far!! 😂 Glad you enjoyed the video. 😁👍
Keeping active, hydrated and with plentiful hot food is a big part of maintaining as much comfort in body and mind as possible when camping outdoors in inclement weather. Impressed that such a small stove produced so much heat, albeit with a large stockpile of prepared wood. Well done.
In our old C-rations we used to get big packets of cocoa. I have never found civilian equivalents. Mixed it with coffee sometimes, mostly not. Good stuff!
Bought my daughter that same tent when she was six, they cost next to nothing then (before they were all over youtube). Removed the buttons and sewed it up with zip in one side. Even at 5'8 i find it a tad small so your side wall mod looks like a must-do. She's now 11 and we have had some good nights in it even in winter without a fire. In summer is where it really is best, the thick canvas keeps you from being woken from early dawn light. I can't see CO being a problem with a flue. I've spent many nights in a Lavvu (top smoke vent) with open fires inside. Thanks for the great videos.
Yes, they are great shelters/tents. Mine is the largest of the three sizes (3 grommet holes) and with the side wall is really spacious. Not tried it with an open fire, but the wood burner works really well. Cheers, Simon
The open fires were with a much larger Helsport Lavvu designed for open fires. Even they can get smokey under foggy weather. Wouldnt dream of them with anything smaller.

Simon, my pop was born in the UK, and I am certainly an Anglophile, but I cannot understand the Brit baked beans for breakfast thing! Cringe and shudder. Cheers.
if it ever went extreme to cooler minus 12 to 29c the additions of a sheet of mylar in roof reflecting heat back down from the fire would turn this into a double reflective shelter make it really heat efficient as would bounce lost heat back down onto you insides this lavvu shelter but it would have to be very cold canvas is far warmer than polyester? in cold conds not in sun tho which is why ive switched over to all cotton for summer im off camping today tonite somewhere!! :) unsure yet if i go to coast or forest yet? may keep it local less bother
As a Finn, the word Lavvu has a bad ring to it since the original word is Laavu. Often I see people talking about Pukko, when it is Puukko. Just my odc kicking in... sorry.
Thank you! I didn’t know that - I’ll try to use the correct spelling from now on. I’ve always just spelt it as others do - doesn’t pay to follow the crowds!! Thanks again and Atb, Simon
Excellent video sir. I love winter camping the same way. No need for a million dollar prevost for me. BTW the dog Maggie is fantastic. Dogs always make camping so cool.
I never got a chance to try British rations. They look good and I've always been interested in what other armies eat. In 2011, while I was stationed in Italy, my company went to Ukraine for three weeks of joint training with a bunch other paratroopers from all around Europe. There was a composite company of British Paras there that we immediately bonded with. (Man, those guys could drink!) We went out to the field with them a couple of times and they were ravenous for our MREs. Most of the guys couldn't understand how anyone could actually want an MRE. But when you consider that there are only 12 some odd British menus compared to 24 MRE menus (that rotate every few years), I can understand how something different would be welcome.
She had her dinner at 22.05, it’s a bit dark so not very clear, but she ate! She has a dry, complete dog mix - wheat free as she is gluten intolerant. Cheers, Simon

Cheers Mark! I got one of the lanterns from a local outdoor store and the other, second hand from a bushcraft trade post forum. You can get them online - search UCO candle lantern, there are a few different variants. 👍Atb, Simon.
Wow I think I saw you process wood before. You make it look so easy when I know it's hard work.
I know I am learning a lot. Thank you
Awesome video! You have the best personality. 👏
How much does that fire box costs... I don't know what it is exactly called sorry if I spell wrong
It’s homemade - made from an old .50 cal ammunition can. 👍
Man, when is that next ice age coming so us survivors can just survive ;) jk cheers mate good videos
Please can you let me know where you got that stove :)
Hi hello! The stove is homemade, made from an old .50 cal ammunition can. There are some good tutorials on UA-cam on how to make them. Cheers, Simon
ITS AN AMMO CAN THAT IS BRILLIANT
Wonderful video and you are also a respectable person
Maggie's sort of weather lol 😜 looks great fun 😳😂
Simon, my pop was born in the UK, and I am certainly an Anglophile, but I cannot understand the Brit baked beans for breakfast thing! Cringe and shudder. Cheers.
Hahaha! What else do you dip your black pudding in? Mmmmmm! Cheers Ray! Atb, Simon.
HappyandAtheist nothing better than that in the morning 😂😂
I'll have to take your word for it, fellas! Not trying it any time soon. 😃
I love the English breakfast. Stewed tomatoes. Beans and all.
@HappyandAtheist , the dogs bollocks doesn't sound too appetizing either!!!
if it ever went extreme to cooler minus 12 to 29c the additions of a sheet of mylar in roof reflecting heat back down from the fire would turn this into a double reflective shelter make it really heat efficient as would bounce lost heat back down onto you insides this lavvu shelter
but it would have to be very cold canvas is far warmer than polyester?
in cold conds
not in sun tho
which is why ive switched over to all cotton for summer
im off camping today tonite somewhere!!
:)
unsure yet if i go to coast or forest yet?
may keep it local
less bother
Hope you have a good time Dave!
Why so many thumbs down?! This is such a great vid! Keep doing what you do Simon, it’s awesome!
Thanks Matt! 😁👍
think that was my third or fourth watch......absolutely fntastic
Howdy from Texas. It doesn’t snow here but I’m fascinated by it! 🇺🇸😎🇬🇧
I was in Austin in the winter of 84 and it snowed like hell... I know it was 84 cause my oldest son was born there the following March of 85...
Very nice video. Maggie is a beaut ! Looks like a lot of fun. We enjoy doing the cold camps here in the US too.
Thanks Dan! We had a lovely camp, Maggie is a great camp companion (even with her snoring!!) cheers, Simon
What did you feed the Pooch?????
She had her dinner at 22.05, it’s a bit dark so not very clear, but she ate! She has a dry, complete dog mix - wheat free as she is gluten intolerant. Cheers, Simon
