Overnight Wild Canoe Camp. Homemade Canvas Baker Tent. Steak and Chips.
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 вер 2019
- In this video, I head off in the canoe with my faithful dog Maggie for a bushcraft wild camp in my homemade canvas baker campfire tent. After paddling to our secluded riverside spot for the night, I set up camp, collect and prepare firewood, collect and purify water and settle down for the evening around the campfire. A hearty dinner of steak, chips and mushroom and a couple of my favourite hot chocolates complete the evening. Morning brings beautiful sunshine and a breakfast of bacon and eggs before packing away and heading off back down the river.
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Anyone else rewatching alllll of Simon’s videos ? I am haha
Eagerly awaiting the return of the King of the forest 🌳!
I decided to go back and watch all the ones I originally missed
With each and every video I am always dumbfounded with the production quality of your content, the amount and quality of your kit, and your bushcraft skills! And of course how amazing Maggie is 👍
Thank you!! 👍
I am at high altitude Colorado Rocky Mountains. The wind is so bad from a snow front coming in. We can not set a tent up....so bedded down in our van. Can't enjoy the tent so do the next best thing...watch Simon do it!.....Simon, may your feet be sure on the trail and your campfire warm at night...you did another great vid!
The fact Simon ate the mangled egg and have sweet Maggie the intact one ☝️ shows how kind his soul is
Just wanted to say a big thanks to you Simon on behalf of myself and my son Toby (aged 6). We found your channel during these testing times we’re in with Covid and it is the highlight of our day watching. Especially with children during these times mental health is a massive factor and it’s content like yours which has certainly made this whole experience bearable. We watched one recently with you and Tom and Toby said it’s inspired him to want to do things you guys do with me which is fantastic. Please keep up the great content. Ps. He’d love a shout out on your next vid, we are so proud of how he’s cooed during this time so it would mean so much to him. Cheers Andy Wilson & Toby.
Thanks Andy! Hopefully things will start to ease a bit over the next few weeks and months and you and Toby can get out and have some adventures!
Say hi to him from me!
Keep well,
Simon
My happy hour is when I get to sit down and enjoy videos that have been put up on UA-cam by individuals that I really enjoy watching. I don't drink so my happy hour falls later than most people's . I'm really looking forward to this one tonight because it's my favorite, and I have a new one that I haven't seen.
Thanks Simon ! I really needed this one this week , especially after a career as a first responder. All the stuff in the media and on Facebook at this time of year is hard on those of us who put it all on the line over the years . Thanks for what you do Simon. Have a great day !
This is exactly how I feel, could not put it into words like this -thx 4 that!
When I finally come home after I have spent a day with cancer patients, and I see he has put out another video I can't wait to sit down and watch . Good end to a good day
Well said Michael Jack! Same sentiments here
Thank you Michael and all of you! That means a great deal to me! All the thanks should go to you guys for what you do day in, day out! 👍👍👍
Draculhuhn hats off to you too it means so much to your patients thanks for them
@@jeffstevens763 thx, hun! 🐰
Just browsing your older videos and there was Maggie. I miss her in the videos. Gone but not forgotten.
So enjoyable to see a man and his dog camping. Sharp looking tent. Thanks for all you do to entertain us all. With love and respect from Minnesota, USA ❤
This is honestly one of the coolest tents I've seen 👍
Dont Lie..chuckle
I had some things in mind to say about your production quality, your personal qualities, the way you manage to share and inspire with your obvious love of being in the outdoors, the way you seek out, use and demonstrate quality gear, but meh... TL:DR it’s better than Telly mate. Ta.
😂👍
top vid has always simon RIP Maggie xx
Best camping show ever.
That is excellent custom canvas work Simon. That takes a lot of talent, layout planning and skill. WOW!
Loved your opening today gliding down the river. So pretty and pleasant! That tent is the BOMB!!!! A mouthwatering meal!!! Your photography, choice of scenes to feature and editing is excellent, making your video exceptionally nice to watch! Thanks Simon for a great share!! Hi Maggie! Cheers!
It’s December’23……..sure gonna miss Maggie, she was a fine companion!
My heart rate and stress just melt away watching these videos. Cheers Simon.
Love this show. I’m an Irishman living in Australia since age 21 . Lived in England before that and travelled over and back as a kid to visit my cousins . Now 55 years old and sitting around during the pandemic. I have watched heaps of your shows now . Great to see the nature side of the English country again . The city of oxford is very dear to me growing up where my cousins live and it was a lot smaller then . We were a stones throw from the bush and great fun every summer . Great home built canoe . I started out also as carpenter joiner and my boss who was very creative and I always planned to make our own also .but time got away from us and I left Ireland to see the world . Great show thanks again
Thanks Gerard -glad the videos bring back some good memories. 👍
What a peaceful break, thank you for sharing, you have a knack of taking us all away with you and for the moments of escapism that gives me from a hectic week.
If you can say, is Andy from Kent survival OK as its been a while since he has uploaded
Yeah I was wondering about Andy too
Simon mentioned in a recent video Andy is OK just life getting in the way.
Love it when Maggie is with you!!!
Your doggy is very good, if I put steak to warm up like that by my pooch, I’d be having mushroom and chips for tea!
I am so glad to find someone with enough sense to make a tent with a floor.
Even before the video is starting I just know this is going to be great! Love your and Maggie's adventures.
Always a pleasure love Maggie unable to do what you are doing because caring for others so please carry on doing what you do God bless 👍
What a terrific tent, and how good to see Maggie in her prime. A beautifully edited piece.
Simon that was a fantastic video. Thank you for doing these for us all to watch. It warms the heart and soul to see man and his dog out in the woods enjoying life as it should be. I wish you all the very best with the channel. Cheers. Roger Henderson.
Thanks Roger! 👍
Awesome tent Simon. Love how your dog waits for you to get her some water from the river to drink. Keep up the great work
Always great to see Maggie.
What great spot to camp in, your tent blends in well to the surroundings, a place your sit at for days drinking tea and watch the day go by. Now I know where my Oztent design was inspired from, 1800s fur traders.
Your own Secret island... you lucky lucky man!😀
Hahaha - if only! 👍🛶
Dam right brother, its all about knowing where to look. A think you need a bigger plate.
@@johnjohnson8448 Yeah, he does need a bigger plate if he's going to eat a steak like that one! And did you see the size of that mushroom?!? Simon, you don't need a bigger plate, you need a *tray!*
That foldable pan is a Bobby dazzler 👍 and you've done a great job on the Baker tent 👍. Nice one
That tent, good sir, is OUTSTANDING! Great long camp tent. Looks very comfortable.
I love watching you and Maggie. The different gear and fire styles are very interesting.
Lovely video Simon, tent looks awesome, and that steak, yum yum.
Your vids are always a breath of fresh air, thanks Simon :)
From across the pond.
I want one !
My favorite set-up at the moment is my OT 2.0 in summer. It can't compare with that set-up! I'm your bigest fan hear in the USA Simon
Just wanna add another comment just to say I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You seem like a really genuine guy and I would absolutely crack a cold bubbly drink with you!
Your baker tent build inspired me to make a rucksack. Thank you! Great channel! Cheers! 🏞🌳🌲💚
Nothing like a peaceful paddle up a small stream. MMM Love your tent and canoe very nice quality. Maggie lucky girl steak with her dinner.
When I saw the title I went and got a nice ribeye steak and potatoes. Cooked it up and then watched the show. I do this because every time you cook something good Maggie gets her part and my dog Larry looks at me "where's mine". I was ready this time. So enjoy your trips. Do as many as you can. Time does gets away from us.
Good one. I really like that tent that you made. Save that it didn't rain, you showed why it's a classic. I watched you sew it, but I still can't believe it. Good show Simon...and Maggie.
To make your own camping equipment and use it well must be very satisfying brilliant mam cheers 🔥
Lovely trip,i suspect you wont have to wait long to give the Baker a thorough wet weather test as this is the British Isles after all.Betting it will out-perform any nylon pod/wigwam system.
Love your videos, your canoe, and I love your pal Maggie, too. Thanks for everything you do!
Binge watching Simon,I'm loving each and every video.
Nice video, the kind that I really like, overnighters showing your beautiful countryside. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOU for how you respect and treat Maggie. That sweet dog came out of that tent and sat in front of you showing the most loving affection. There are a couple of Bushcrafters with dogs who make jokes at their dog's expense, and I personally, don't like that. You share your food generously with her. Just so amazing. If I had unlimited resources, I would share it with you. If I win the lottery, you are at least, 5th on my list. All the Best.
Thank you Joyce!
So that method of cooking with the steak in the culinary world is called a reverse sear, also I really liked that spice pouch.
Thanks Timmothy! 👍
Always a joy, Simon.
Your love of what you do is contagious! Be well!
just wanted to say what a pleasure it is watching some chilled out camping, when the weather is so rubbish, Cumbria, february. me and my dog Dudley are curled up on the sofa in front of the woodburner, waiting for for better times to go out and enjoy! Thanks Simon
Thanks George! Fingers crossed for an improvement in the weather soon! 👍
Simon + dog +natureza = vídeo show
Um forte abraço do Brasil
Great video love the tent you did a great job of sewing it up!
OMG! Awesome build, Sir. Forget the steak, I’m drooling over the tent. 👍😁
I liked the woodcutting edit. There was a real rhythm to it. You certainly saw like a man who can saw all day if needed.
The hot chocolate was just a happy coincidence.... What you were craving, was water. Of the three macro nutrients (fats, protein, and carbohydrates), protein requires the greatest amount of water to digest. Make sure you have a ready supply of potable water when consuming a lot of protein.
As always, loved the video...
Thanks Chris - yes, thirsty work eating a steak! Water was in plentiful supply on this trip. 👍💦
I sure love Maggie! Always great to see you both out enjoying the woodland. The tent is awesome.
Thank you , Simon .
🐺 Loupis Canis .
I have watched alot of Your adventures. This is the best one so far. You and Maggie in the canoe , Your outstandingly made tent , Bushcraft made fire , food . It doesn't get much better than that. I wish I could hangout out with a really cool person like You. I love it and do it but not nearly as good as You do it. Thanks for Your videos !
Aul Maggie the most famous dog on UA-cam she's so loving she's an amazing dog love the video Simon
Great design ! Must have been such a experience enjoying your hard work ...,very satisfying 😁
Simon, I LOVE the Baker tent! Really takes me back to my days as a Boy Scout! Bill Doyle
Maggie is such a beautiful dog 🐶!
Very much enjoyed the video. I love that tent as well. Your canoe sure seems to be a nice paddling canoe, responds nicely to the paddle
Watching you and Maggie was a nice mini vacation, thank you :)
An absolute pleasure to watch. Thanks
Great tent !!
can you handle stinging nettles like that to make a tea? ... someones going to tell me they aint stinging nettles lol!!!
I noticed that too! I think he is using the leaves to pick the stems, stopping him getting stung. Show off 😆
@@StevieWyatt cheers Stevie... I always assumed it was the jaggy leaf that had the sting, I await an 'experts' explanation ...
Yes, they are stinging nettles - if you’re careful and pick with an upwards movement, you can avoid getting stung (well, you still get stung a bit!) 😂
You can pick nettles all day without being stung if you do it positively and firmly. But, the formic acid will soak through your skin and be worse than a sting.
I might just stick to the Tetley's then 😂
O Boy! you're gonna overdose! haha, Enjoyed the video a lot mate and im loving that grill!
Cheers matey! 😂 wired on hot chocolate!
You get my vote as the best tent for one person plus dog. The fact that you made it yourself is awesome I have kept this video as one of my very favorites.
Thanks Wayne. 👍
Of all the 'bushcrafter' U-tube vids I've seen........your's is the most genuine. Good job. And great job on the tent!
Thank you! 👍
You work hard and you deserve it enjoy your night I like your light
Is a old light
As usual I'm six months late, but wow a great vid. The tent looks of commercial quality, probably even better. with hidden detailing.
That meal would be mega expensive in some pretentious gastro pub, served on some odd piece of rock or something equally ridiculous. When prepared on an open fire and eaten in the glooming after a busy, fulfilling and calming day, totally priceless.
Thanks
Ian
I’ve heard a pub somewhere in the uk, where they serve food in a welly boot! 🙄 Cheers Ian. 👍
That is the most beautiful canoe I've ever seen!
Thank you Cheryl! 😁🛶
@@simonablokeinthewoods Where'd you find such a beautiful canoe?
I dig baker tents and had one custom made not as nice as yers
this is the best I have seen 🤠
Thanks for taking us along.
Nice. Thanks. Good of you to bring us along. It appears that Maggie really approves of your new tent, the way she arose in the morning, all smiles and licks.
For those of us unable to match your talents in tent making theres a unit called Backwoods Bungalow 2 , someone might like that style of tent.
Your steak cook is officially called reverse sear, athome you can heat the steak up in the oven at a low temp till you get the internal temp you want and then expose it to a raging heat to get the outside crust you like.. good stuff.
That’s exactly what I do at home! 😁👍
The Backwoods Bungalow by OneTigris is a decent little tent - I’ve got one to try out -watch this space! 😁👍
Entertainment while I had breakfast.. very good 👍
Love your canoe, love your dog, love your tent. Love your video. Thanks for sharing all the above. atb -Larry
Looks like a beautiful place to camp. Calming and relaxing.
What a nice tent and what a lovely dog.
Excellent!! Nice old school baker tent, cooking over a campfire, dog and canoe in the woods. About as good as it gets. Another fine job, thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Maggie must have the patience of a saint. The steak on show like that :)
Great Video, tent and what a lovely dog Maggie is
Maggie is a great companion, trained very well. If that would have been my dog, the second I'd turn my back that steak would have been gone. My dog knew a lot of tricks that I taught her, but making a steak vanish was one she didn't need to be taught. I miss my dog, so Maggie helps remind me about her. Thank you Simon for the camping trip. Tomorrow I'll go kayaking again. Getting out on the water is relaxing.
Maggie once took a whole roasted chicken of the kitchen side - the only evidence was a greasy smear across the kitchen floor!
Glad to see she is still running about. Chicken bones cooked are very bad for dogs, being brittle and splinter getting caught in their throats. So that day Maggie was just on good behavior for the camera.
This is way off the subject, but since you have Dutch ovens how do you keep them clean.? I end up scrubbing with Dawn dish soap because it just doesn't get clean unless I use it. But with the use of Dawn soap it removes the oil covering so I end up reapplying the oil. One thing I read was not to scour it because it also removes the oil that needs to be built up to keep it from rusting and stick resistant. I'm guessing I just have to keep doing what I'm doing to get them clean. The black soot on the bottom gives me a black hand every time I grab it forgetting not to touch the bottom. It's funny how water repellant the soot is; No matter how much water the soot does not come off until I use soap.
I come here(ur channel) often to 🧘♀️meditate,
So peaceful and calm.
Très beau et bon vidéo, et toutes mes félicitations pour ta tente; pour moi, elle est exceptionnelle.... Tu as aussi un très bel emplacement pour du camping. Encore Bravo, et Merci pour le partage.
Merci Denys!
Oui ami, et bon!!
After watching the how to videos of your Baker Tent it was great to see her out in the field. You have done an amazing job! it looks so cool. Your steak dinner looked awesome..I was slobbering more than Maggie over that steak! The time taken to make your videos very much comes across in the finished product. Thanks so much for sharing your special times. Take care Tony
Rising the bar of excellence! Stellar video.⛺️
Thanks for the video. I am enjoying this one for the second time.
I'll add to your instructive blog. Yes--the Baker is a heavy tent, but it really works in front of a nice fire. And part of the gear when flat-water canoeing. I bought one from "Duluth Packs" along with some very nice canvas canoe packs. In the 1980s, I took off on white water canoeing. Which soon led to flat water with a down-river race boat. Made by Chestnut in New Brunswick it was an 18-foot wood canvas beauty. Gorgeous lines with an amazing hull speed.
The whole kit including the "Baker" and "Duluth" packs went together very comfortably.
Keep the open side up.
a man and his dog, a piece of canvas and half a cow, what more could you ask for - loved it, so simple 😁
Another wonderful film. Great inspiration for outdoor lovers stuck inside at the moment
Only just discovered your channel. What a treat your videos are for the soul.
I've only seen a Baker tent sketched in old Boy Scout handbooks. Very nice!
Watched this 3x. Still fun!
Best tent ever and best video as well. Luv the pup🐅🐾♥️♥️♥️
Thank you! 👍
Hey simon simon hope you well , is quite nice I'm watching Maggie for the first time actually sweet dog . 🙏🌠
You have a beautiful set-up. I enjoy all your videos. Thanks for making them.😊
Thank you for making the effort and taking the time to bring us along with you. For those of us that can't get out there quite so often , the lack of your filming would be a great loss to us all
Thanks Mike! 👍
03.30am and now I want steak and chips, thanks Simon. 😁
