Not DID, just a shitty memory. However, I find it incredibly useful to keep a planner.... NOT for things you 'need' to do. But for things you've done. Doesn't matter if I just played a game for 3 hours, worked on a craft project, did some chores. I write down what was actually accomplished in that time frame.
I have a separate planner for future events/to-do lists/etc to keep track of what *should* happen.
But if I ever feel like I'm not getting things done, haven't been productive, not sure how I spent my time, etc. I can reference the former. I color code things by the type of task for an easy review, too. If I'm gaming, it's probably down in green. If I've been crafting it's in blue, etc. But I can also imagine this would be useful for alters to track who's been out and such.
Also super helpful for my mental health. Maybe I didn't get done what I had planned to do, and feel awful (especially if it was for someone else), but then I look back at what I actually did do and can rationalize why I didn't, at least.

@@guiseofyouth 2020's planner has both month and weekly views with hourly breakdown (it's a Passion Planner), so I plan to just do 'to-dos' on monthly view and 'what actually happened' on the weekly view. 🤔 will see how that works out.

We’ve been trying planners most of our adult life. For some reason we don’t seem to be able to use one for very long. It could be is short as setting it up or as long is a few months. Eventually it stops being used instantaneously. Short of having another person using it with us we don’t know what to do about this.

“There’s just something about a planner that makes me happy” that’s a whole mood Kit. Mine is color coded and keeps me sane. I have ADHD which means my brain will like...straight up forget to file memories. So writing things down physically, and having a color code, really helps me. I like Day Designer planners personally!

I don't have DID. I was born with hydrocephalus which affected my cognitive skills, ie. my memory. I am 44 and in recent years my memory has gotten less reliable so I made an effort to improve my memory and I learned about things like memory palaces and mnemonics.

I have a ton of alarms set on my phone to remind me week by week things that im not good at keeping track of. What days to shower, what day is trash day. Whens my weekly meeting. When to go to bed (I never listen to this one). When to wake up. (Currently turned off) sleep til noon life is fine for now.
Without alarms telling me what to do when to do it I know I wouldn't be able to keep track of if I'd done it.

I have an issue with memory too - I've found a bullet journal so helpful because it's a cross between a journal, a notebook and a calendar. There's lots of great youtube videos out there but I found Kara's (Boho Berry) the best when I was starting out - she has a playlist called Bullet Journal 101. Mine aren't as fancy or pretty but it keeps me organised and is great for keeping track of things I need to do in the future.

"Or your husband's birthday" 🤣🤣🤣 I found that to be particularly funny because I am actually really good at remembering things with numbers. My boyfriend however, not so much. He forgets my birthday EVERY YEAR! He is so bad with numbers and dates he doesn't even know how old he is 🤣🤣🤣 It's an ongoing joke in this house. I write everything on a calendar in the kitchen. My work schedule, pays days, birthdays, appointments. Does he look at it?....No. 😂😂😂 I have to have a good memory to keep up with this guy.

Don't have DID, but here's a tip of how to remember birthday's!
Create a document on your phone (Word, Google Docs, wherever you'll look) and then ask all your friends to text you what their birthday is. You can then write the dates into the document in chronological order, so you can check it at the beginning of each month to see any new birthdays that are coming up. You'll also know for certain those numbers are the right dates, as you can copy and paste exactly what your friends told you into the document!
This can also be used as a tracker of whether you remembered or forgot their birthday, whether you got them a present or forgot, and whether you got them a card or forgot thanks to colour coding! So for example, maybe all the birthday's start as black, and then you colour it red if you forgot it, but colour it blue if you remembered!
Hope it helps! It's saved me so many times! (Oh, and if you use it as a present tracker, don't forget to include Valentine's Day, Christmas and your wedding anniversary!)
    Have a lovely day~ 😁

We don't really do much to help memory except to have every important event (therapy, doctors appointment, party, ect.) on our phone calander and like a million alarms. For times when someone tells me that something happened and I have little to no memory of it, my favorite phrase is: "I can neither confirm nor deny"

with our system, our therapist helped us create a day-to-day schedule to use and be held accountable to by our mom. like, during the morning to afternoon, oliver our gatekeeper won't allow any littles to front so us bigs can get school, chores, and work done that we need to. in the evening after our shift or after we've done everything we need to anyone who wants to (and is safe) can front and do as they please!
also, our brain is very ADHD (diagnosed before we began to split haha) so we already had trouble with memory, and now it's so so bad. i hate lists, i hate cleaning, and i hate chores, so typically one of my tidier headmates will front. i split off a fragment named sunny, a few months ago, to help me clean the overwhelming and panic-inducing mess i had created in our room, and so she usually helps tidy up and clean because she really enjoys cleaning while listening to a podcast or youtube video. thank god for sunny because we really needed her help haha

Ironically my chosen profession is one that requires memory... and my memory is terrible. When I was younger my goal was to be an actor on screen because if I mess up and forget a line we can just shoot the scene over again and it's not a big deal. I never thought I would end up in theater performing live because my memory is just awful. In high school I ended up taking a drama class and the first few scenes I did in class were exactly as I expected where I could not remember any of my lines. I was in Drama for three years though and eventually figured out a few tricks to help me memorize dialog.
    1. Hand write all my lines. Of course I already have a script with all my lines written out but something about writing out my lines rather than just reading them seems to help me memorize them better.
    2. Type out all my lines again. Similar to the writing thing, and at this point I essentially have two copies of my script and I'm typing out a third copy. Again, I'm not sure why but doing this seems to help me remember better.
    3. Recite lines repeatedly until I can do it without looking at my script at least once.
    4. Notice que words. After reading enough scripts I started to notice a pattern where at least one word or phrase spoken by one character would end up being repeated by the next character who speaks. So if not only did that help with remembering what line to listen for to cue me but it also helped to remember what I was suppose to say in response.
    5. Keep my script back stage and rehearse my lines for the next scene before each entrance. This really helped me during "Meet me in St. Louis" where I played the grandfather. Before the show started I'd be back stage going over my lines for the first scene I'm in. As soon as I went back stage I'd immediately pick my script back up to go over lines for the next scene.
Most actors are entirely off book by opening night which means they stop using scripts all together and just have their lines completely memorized. With me having the memory problems that I do that's not possible. I could have the script totally memorized one day and then completely forget all my lines the very next day. That's what happened my first year of class when I thought I had all my lines down but then the next day I hadn't rehearsed thinking I knew it already and all I managed to get out as Sir Toby was "Welcome ass." Because it was for class and not a full play it wasn't that bad and I essentially chose that role almost entirely because I got to say the word ass without getting in trouble and pretend to be drunk. Of course at the time I'd never actually been drunk before and I'd probably do that differently now that I'm a legal adult who has actual experience being drunk.
Anyway... there's a video on my channel where I do a monologue and I tried to memorize the lines using all the above methods that had worked for me in the past but I was going through a really hard time which is why I choose that monologue in the first place. Though I think the words took on a bit of a different meaning for me personally than for the character. Anyway because I was feeling like shit I think I may have been dissociating more than usual which made it impossible to memorize anything. You can see in the video I was reading the dialog off my lap top. I'm also not happy with my delivery in that video and I did it about three different times and wasn't happy with any of them. Still posted the video even though I thought it sucked. In a way acting is a kinda of therapy for me. I use it to get out what I'm feeling in a safe way that other people just read as the character I'm playing and don't even know or associate that character with anything I might really being dealing with. Like when I played King Lear the scene where he's morning the death of his daughter, even though the character was a father morning a daughter at the time my great grandmother had just passed away so I was actually thinking about her in place of the daughter. Got a standing ovation for that performance and my drama teacher even said that's the most dramatic improvement she ever seen in a student considering how badly I botched Sir Toby and then two years later I'm nailing King Lear. All that said... I'm not sure what was going on when I was trying to film that Anna in the Tropics monologue on my channel but I didn't feel like I was entirely myself at the time. And I think that had something to do that being one of the biggest down spirals into depression that I just couldn't focus on anything.
Oddly I don't have any issues remembering physical movements though. Like I can go over my state blocking once and have it all memorized the first time. I think because I've been playing with Transformers as puzzles for pretty much my entire life that I've kinda built up a strong muscle memory. I look at a figure and I have no freaking clue how the heck it transforms... until I pick it up and actually starting doing the transformation and figures I haven't touched in over 20 years still only take a few minutes to do. The body remembers things really well... the brain has memories scattered across 40 different alters. I don't know how that works. It's weird as hell.

I haven't been diagnosed but I'm positive I have chronic derealization and it makes it so hard to remember short term things. I dont have too much of an issue with remembering when I have work and what not (as long as I can successfully keep track of time and date). I don't really do this often but I'm starting to leave myself notes around on doors with things to do in short term that aren't a daily thing so I can't possibly forget. Then I only take it down once the task is done. Thanks for these pointers too. 💛🌻 sending love to everyone

We use bullet lists to keep track of things we need to do and things we've done like paying bills, groceries and such. I also use multiple calendars to keep track of my work schedule since no two days of the week are the same and it changes every four months. I use an email calendar, a white board calendar and a calendar I've generated in a spread sheet app. My calendars are color coded in regards to which client I'm working with (each client is assigned a different color) so I can see my work schedule at a glance. Medical appointments have their own color as due bill payment reminders.
Also we hold on to important emails, flagging the most important ones so they can be found easily. I also use multiple alarms on my phone to keep me on schedule with work.

Make a clean space by the door you leave the house from. Keep it completely cleared off unless there is something you need to take with you the next time you leave the house. If you put it there, it will look out of place which will make you pause and think about why it's there, and remember to do whatever needs to be done with the item. Also put a small write on wipe off board by the same door for less tangible reminders. Use your phone to set alarms for days or weeks in the future and label them with the activity you need to do when it goes off. Keep your important daily adulting tools in the same place all of the time - keys, wallet, ID, etc.

This was super helpful because our system has only recently really started switching pretty regularly and memory has become far more fragmented. I was used to fronting the vast majority of the time so it's been an adjustment to have to figure out what the others in the system did when I'm not completely present or dissociated. Bullet Journalling over the past few years has made a HUGE difference in my life. I was tracking things like taking my meds, drinking enough water, getting some exercise, journaling, etc. I was also tracking bad days and adding something to a drawing every time I survived a bad day. I didn't know I had DID. But I absolutely did know that having a colorful and fun journal had a huge impact on my ability to function on a schedule. We stopped missing medical appointments, stopped missing or accidentally doubling up on medication, etc. Now I know why that helped so much! My bullet journal also came pre-printed with monthly, three month, and yearly goals, along with a place to track progress. Apparently me and our co-host have been coordinating reaching some of the smaller goals without realizing we were coordinating. I'm so thankful for my bujo!

I don’t know if you’ve already heard of this, but the Erin Condren website allows you to make SUPER personalized planners. You can have them colorful and artsy or very well defined and streamlined. They have tons of inserts you can add as well. I would check it out. They can get a little pricy depending on the number of inserts and additions but it comes out to be worth it for the level of organization it provides. Plus you can have one planner span 1.5-2 years, so you are totally getting your money’s worth.
Hope that helps! I don’t have DID, but I do have to deal with Dissociative Amnesia and some anxiety/panic issues that are made way worse if I don’t have a clear vision of what my plans and obligations are. The planner was a godsend.

I am a 2019 high school graduate and even more recently a newly diagnosed DID system. Looking back my memories are definitely of multiple alters' experiences, but depending on what "part of me was expressing" I always always aaalways found it very productive to own and color coordinate all my notes. It separated and individuals trains of thought to more easy-to-follow chunks.
Now with the DID diagnosis, my system has used art and especially color as self-identification. One alter; his color is cobalt blue, another alter is burnt coral red. Very defined shades and tones of hue have helped us find out "who took notes in class" in our attempts at higher education (the diagnosis and process of finding love and support have honestly been more educationally detrimental than my alters' amnesia).
So while it is hard for us to make a time frame of "so and so were fronting from this time to this time" as some systems like the dissociaDID have mentioned doing- we have started/our/ development with just understanding the basic identification of our many identities with color. ^-^
(PS. A vote has started amongst ourselves for our system name being "The Hue system". We are symbolic in nature and were told a system name was meant to be meaningful. Hope the vote goes well ☆)

Or something to that effect, and because I can lose thoughts to the speed of my own mind if something is considered really important, in my view, or that I know I've lost several times already the people I'm close to allow me to interrupt them to dump things before I lose them again. It's pretty much always I say what I don't want to lose and then the conversation continues like I never said anything.

I am both very Type A and just have a horrible memory. Bullet journals are really my favorite way to keep track of stuff; they're both very functional but also they look really nice!! There's a ton of cool stuff out on UA-cam on how to make them. (I usually don't do the full setup like they do; I just have like, a modified planner that I use so that it's a little easier.) Also the Reminders app on iPhone is surprisingly good!!

Hey, I’m recovering from a concussion, so am practice memory and attention span. There’s a whole branch of speech therapy called cognitive speech therapy where you learn about and practice ways to improve your memory. I just started but it might be something the system could do as an adjunct to therapy. I had no idea it existed before my concussion clinic referred me! They do baseline testing then give you goals to work towards. Otherwise I use my online calendar as an adaptable to do list, and ask Siri and Alexa to remind me of things even months away. I put lists around the house - like on the back of the front door - of things I need to bring with me places, steps in routines, etc.

Hello! I don't know if you will see this, but I hope you know you have helped out our system immensely. When I personally found out I was an alter I was in denial and embarrassed. Today I started telling about my story on Wattpad and in Part 3 of "A Dissociative Diary" I have a shout out to you. Thank you so so very much. You were instrumental in destigmatizing it for me. Before when a therapist or someone close to me would bring it up I was very adamant that I couldnt possibly have this disorder. Now I can accept it and work with it. I don't have D.I.D. but I do have an especially awful memory, and I know there's things I do that help. Maybe not in every situation, mostly just to help prevent myself from forgetting in the future. Long list warning, feel free to ignore.
Mirrors generally make decent white boards as long as you clean them off after the writing has passed- I generally do this when there's something abnormal that I have to do the next morning like "you're going into work an hour early today" or "dont forget your belt" and I can wipe it off once I'm done with it. Helps if you don't actually have a white board, like myself.
I custom-make my calendars cause y'know. I'm too cheap to buy a regular one. But I have a key on the side that lists off what certain markings mean: the fish symbol means I changed the fish tank filter, dot means I cleaned the guinea pig cage, etc. I tend to not write full sentences or words and just leave symbols, but you should always MAKE A KEY for symbols you use because you never know when you might forget them.
I almost always carry a pen or marker in my bag (and my pocket when I'm at work) to make sure I can write something down on my wrist or hand. Its helpful if you're like me and have forgotten food in the work fridge or need a reminder later to put oil in the car before leaving or something. People look at me funny when I've got "Chip" written on my hand but hey, I remembered to grab my Chipotle out of the breakroom fridge so who's the real winner here
I know it also may sound crazy but Messenger is also insanely helpful. Messenger has time and date stamps on messages sent, and you can in fact message yourself. You can also search messages for words or phrases in case you can't find them. I find it helpful for journaling; I can send a message saying "blahs blahs happened just now" and look it up later, even if it's been MONTHS or even YEARS. I know other messaging systems might do that but I use messenger. (To search in a conversation, just hit the circled "i" in the top right corner/under the chat head and it should be the fourth option on the list it pulls up.)
The last thing I do if I know I'm definitely going to forget something on the way out the door is that I take a second to write a sticky note and use a little tape to tape it to my front door, essentially writing a question like "did you remember to put your notebook in your bag" before going to a specific class or meeting or appointment. It's my last ditch effort to make sure I haven't forgotten things that I'll need, especially and specifically if I've forgotten them before or if it's of extreme importance that I do or grab said thing before leaving the house.

Our system has found that a lot of strategies that are helpful with dealing with ADHD have been useful in dealing with DID as well! We have both DID and ADHD, and it was a pleasant surprise to have a lot of DID memory stuff be helped by the things we were doing to manage our ADHD. In my opinion, it's worth looking at advice from adults with ADHD!

Our overall memory and maintenance is handled by two, Strat and Jack. Jack is kind of like our mental engineer who deals more with the infrastructure side of things. Strat is more like the network admin. In general though, we tend to centralize our day to day memories. Anything that is more of an emotional experience is often less accessable to others without direct consent; be it an inner or outer world memory.
When we do share these memories they are almost always as seen as if we were watching a movie or in a VR simulation. The information is there but the direct emotion of the event is not. We can perceive and sometimes experience, the event but we are left to make up our own insights and emotions about what happened. If we wanted to know how they felt we can ask but sharing and chosen method (talk or impart emotions) are left up to the memory holder.
We're an old system so those are just the broad strokes. Hope it helps. ☺

Hurrah for old systems! Ours is almost 50, but we're only a year into our diagnosis. Because we split very very very young, we had to learn to work together without ever being aware of each other- and managed to do so until it all came crashing down and led us to start therapy. When our therapist told us we have DID, it was a total shock. Learning your entire life was a lie... has been tough, but at least we are (mostly) aware of each other now.

Finding the Entropy System has been a big help to us in understanding what the condition is and how to cope with it. We've also found that instead of being alone we are actually part of a community of sorts. There is so much misinformation and just plain wrong things out there regarding the condition.

We also do the 3 calendar thingy. On top of that there's a weekly whiteboard in the kitchen where people can jot down what they've done in terms of housework etc. so we can keep track of who is helping out and what's been done recently. We also have post it notepads everywhere we hangout frequently so that quick notes can be made at a moment's notice. One of us checks around regularly to sort of bring it all together and gets a picture of what we've been up to/need to do.

Memory is a REAL struggle for us...We can be so forgetful that we walk to another room to do something or get something & forget why we are going half way or once we get there & repeat this so many times & so regularly before we actually accomplish anything it is truly ridiculous. What we have done to help with this (& to remember to check/write in calendars & things ect),Is, we purchased a $3 clip on lighter leash and attached a small binder clip to the keyring so as we could have a sticky note pad & pen attached to us at all times that we can pull up to write on & it winds itself right back so we don't lose it, when we are about to do something it's easy to write it or doodle a picture on the sticky pad and it's always hanging off of us so it is noticeable I can not tell you how helpful this has been to us... i took a picture but don't know how to or if i can upload it, regardless it is the best & we want to share it! ^.^ - kitty

I have ADHD and have to keep lists or I will forget literally anything I'm supposed to remember. This isn't even hyperbolic. I've tried planners and emails and everything under the sun to keep organized and I could never stick to it. But if I have a paper on my fridge I can list everything and it works perfectly for me. I have to pass my fridge to leave my apartment so I always check before I leave. And take a photo on my phone to know what's up for the day and delete that when I get back home. Everything in one spot and just track everything.

I have terrible memory issues and ADHD and Autism so visual aids do nothing to remind me to do stuff because it becomes visual noise so if it's time sensitive I will have my mom write down things in her phone (I'm housebound and unable to leave without help anyways so it doesn't matter as much but she also has memory issues so writing it down helps her). It helps to have a physical block that reminds me to do things as well but that doesn't always work. It's kind of like a dice game of will I remember to do the thing. My memory is so bad I've forgotten friends before and I always feel sooooooo guilty when that happens it's like I have dementia or something.
