And I literally fell in love right with your version - so much so that without speaking French at all (I am a Russian living in the Ural Mountains), I learned its words and now perform it in a narrow circle of my friends with a guitar, in your manner. So now my friends call me Un Uralien errant as a joke. We Russians have a very popular folk song of the XIX century about our Siberian wanderer who returns home after escaping from prison. So now I'm also singing about a Canadian wanderer. Thank you so much for such a wonderful lyrical performance! Peace to all peoples.
Jim, you are totally wrong in your closing comments as to the origin of this song. The lyrics of Un Canadien Errant were composed in 1842 by Antoine Gérin-Lajoie at the request of his friend Cyprien Pinard while they were both at the college in Nicolet. This song tells the grief of a Canadien patriot (today’s Québécois) exiled in Bermuda or Australia following the defeat of the Patriot movement by the British in 1837-38. The deportation of the Acadians by the same British was in 1755.

This has been one of my favorite songs to play on my Appalachian mountain dulcimer. Love your version and thank you for the translation. Some of my ancestors were among those exiled.

Hello Saiko. I'm glad you enjoyed the song. This recording was made 50 years ago by myself and 3 other guys. There is a photo of our group at the very beginning. We made it with a simple reel-to-reel tape recorder (before cassette tapes) in an apartment in Montreal. It was 1968 and several musical variations of Un Canadien Errant were around. We did not have any sheet music so I think we just chose a sound that went well with the guitar chords and harmony we liked. Thanks for your kind comments. Jim Franckum
