A Wandering Canadian
Poetry by Antoine Gérin-LaJoie
An errant Canadian,
banished from his homeland,
in tears is wandering through foreign lands.
One sad and pensive day,
seated on a river’s bank,
to the evasive current
he spoke these words.
If you should see my homeland,
my sad and unhappy land,
tell all my friends
that I remember them.
As I draw my last breath,
O my beloved Canada,
my yearning glance
will be directed towards you.
song written in memory of the brave French Canadians who revolted against the British colonial government in 1837 and 1838 in the hope of obtaining a responsible and democratic government and who were exiled to Australia, Bahamas and South Africa.
The piano accompaniment is stunningly beautiful.
Un canadien errant, banni de ses foyers,
Parcourait en pleurant des pays étrangers.
Un jour triste et pensif, assis au bord des flots,
Au courant fugitif, il adressa ces mots :
«Si tu vois mon pays, mon pays malheureux,
Va dire à mes amis que je me souviens d'eux.»
Non, mais en expirant, Ô mon cher Canada,
Mon regard languissant, vers toi se portera.
-Antoine Guérin-Lajoie
Deciding on using the extra measure in each phrase really opens up opportunities for you in the song. Such a spacious arrangement ... no. More than arrangement - I hate that word when I hear such a rich and luscious creation. Donald ... what a great composition!
Thanks so much for this accolade, Rupe. It means so much... Donald
Hey Donald ... it's Rob Van Wyck ... I guess I'm using a slightly anonymous alias on YT. Rupe was a nickname of old. Best wishes from Thunder Bay.
Gorgeous, subtle and definitive TTBB performance, Erick and Chor Leoni, and pianist! It brings tears... Thank you so much, Donald
We're so happy to have this great work available for TTBB, and we love singing it. Thank you, Don!
Beautiful 🎼💝🎹🌹
There are few all-male choirs anymore. And I really like listening to male vocals. Your male choir is professional. Congratulations!
@ Thanks for watching! We're so glad you enjoyed it.
Sehr schön 👍🏻
