  • Think running is a cheap sport? Think again! I don't mean to be a party pooper but let me explain why running is actually an expensive sport. In this video, I'll break down all, well most, of the costs associated with running and why it's not as budget-friendly as you might think.

    Hi bro another great video, yes it's an expensive sport, have you done a video on cheap buys & bargains? when a new running shoe comes out the previous model is dramatically reduced in price making it a good buy. Nutrition Gels always come on offer in supermarkets etc. I recently went to ASICS outlet at York outlet village, there was Nike, Adidas & Under Armour. Plenty of discounts with a bit of patience & looking around. Thanks Aubrey 👍🏼🤩💪🏼

    People like to talk down to runners. I have a Fenix 7 Pro Sapphire Solar with Titanium band. I have 14 Nike Aeroswift tanks ($90 MSRP each), Rabbit shirts, New Balance shoes, Beats Fit Pro. A ton of Eastern Mountain Sports and New Balance pieces for running when it's below freezing. Hats, gloves of different thicknesses, ski mask for running in a blizzard. I have a home gym and a gym membership. It's nice to do it at home when the weather is bad or you're in a hurry. The gym has better, overall equipment. I play tennis too.

  • @jdelarunz
    @jdelarunz 9 днів тому

    You're either exaggerating or overspending (or both). Yes my Garmin cost $600 but it will last 6 years, so $100 a year. Clothing from Decathlon, just as good and much cheaper, say another $150 a year. No need to buy such expensive shoes, say three pairs a year at $150 each, so $450 a year. I only do half-marathons and below, so I've never even tried a gel. $0. Hydration: it's called 'water' and where I live it's free. $0. Running with friends is $0. There are tons of free training plans online: $0. You'd eat pasta anyway, so extra cost is $0. Three races a year, so say $300. There's a complete year of running for $1000. Now compare that to cycling.
    So it short, running is as cheap as you want it to be. Stop buying useless crap. And whatever the shoe-tubers and influencers (and the brands pushing the narrative) say, you do not need to have a dozen pairs of $300+ running shoes!

    • @AubreyRunning
      @AubreyRunning  8 днів тому +1

      You forgot one option beyond exaggeration and overspending, and that’s just being lightheartedly jokey about some truth to this sport we love.
      The point about the clothes from decathlon is true but only comparative to other running clothes and not normal clothes. A running T-shirt compared to a standard T-shirt for example and that goes to shoes as well. Anything specifically engineered for running or any other sport will carry a premium.
      In terms of hydration, I partially agree but the whole reason electrolytes exist goes beyond just water. Think of the nutritional value of salts and other minerals… I get your point though but when it comes to marathons you will be doing your body justice to replenish on both carbs and salts. Your performance will improve with these additions.
      Yes there are tons of free plans but they lack customisation to your own running and this is particularly important for new runners. When you then pick up what you’re doing, I agree with you. No free standard plan will beat a knowledgeable coach, ever!
      My main point though is that this was intentionally funny and exaggerated.

    • @jdelarunz
      @jdelarunz 8 днів тому +1

      @@AubreyRunning I agree with that, what really irritates me is that, like most things, the advertisers and marketers for the brands have got their teeth into running and are working hard to make you feel inadequate if you don't have the latest supershoes and six other pairs, all the fancy clothing and the rest of it. The pills, powders and potions part is also 90% BS and extremely profitable, trying to normalize supplements rather than a good diet. For the salts and electrolytes you can find excellent options in any drugstore for much less than the over-hyped, over-sold dedicated running options.
      Sometimes on UA-cam you get the feeling that everyone is getting high on their own supply, that the UA-camrs are inundated with free "kit" and fancy shoes and that sends out the message that all this consumption is normal and necessary. I presume that videos reviewing "stuff" with the associated affiliate marketing are the most profitable, again skewing the game. This is not a personal attack in any way, just the nature of things. :)
      Good luck for your first marathon! Enjoy the experience :)

    I mean, I get the point, running can be expensive if you let it be, but that's every sport/hobby these days - every business and influencer out there is trying to sell you stuff by convincing you that you need it and it's particularly bad in running because it's such a popular sport. In reality, the minimal kit required to go out running a couple of times a week *is* cheaper and more accessible than almost any other sport. I know the video is partly exaggerated for fun, but I don't like the message (from the whole community - no shade specifically on you for this Aubrey!) that you need all this stuff if you want to "take your running seriously". I'd rather people were critical about what they personally really need, instead of it becoming normalised that everyone needs all this crap just to be a casual runner getting outside a few times a week.

      @@AubreyRunningI'm not sure if I'd agree, most of the things you said can be cut in price. You can find lots of shoes second hand online (making sure they are definitely in good condition), cheaper running watches, cheaper clothes, eggs instead of protein powder, snack bars instead of gels etc etc. I am a fan though, don't get me wrong, just want to make sure anyone newer to the sport isn't put off as you really don't need to spend a lot of money to have fun or to be a very good runner.

      @@AubreyRunningAlso not to get too political but I do believe a lot of this stuff is a product of a highly consumerist society, not being content with what we have which makes these companies richer and damages the planet more. Let's all just be happy with what we have!
