Agreed. I’ve been learning Italian for over 2 years now (I just do one lesson a day - only takes me a couple minutes) and the most validating moments are when I encounter Italian words and sentences in the wild and find that I have full or almost full understanding of them.
Once you know the words and the grammar, I think one of the things that help the most is straight up speaking the language no matter how bad you are or how many mistakes you are. Most native speakers won't mind at all that you are making mistakes or struggling, they will actually be impressed and excited that you are even trying to learn the language.
In high school I saw multiple foreign exchange students get from an elementary level of english to almost being as proficient as the rest of the class in under 9 months. I really enjoyed helping them learn english.
@silviasanchez648 that's true, the only place I have seen that not happen is Montréal. I had gone there on a quick vacation just to get out of town for a few days and thought I could brush up on my French, which I hadn't spoken since college. And I found that the majority of servers in restaurants are just too busy to mess around with it. The second they see you hesitating over a word, they switch into English. The only one who spoke French with me was the son of the owner of a Nepalese restaurant. He was wonderful, and the people at the next table who had grown up in New Jersey were very complimentary and kind as well
@@LindaC616 I can kind of understand that though. You can't just go and do it everywhere as some people are busy so they don't have time to wait for you to figure out the words.
To learn spanish I bought a frequency dictionary with the 2000 most common spanish words. I did this because 80% of the language are these 2000 most spoken words. Then I just listened to spanish videos on youtube and podcasts so that I can better my comprehension and learn how the language is used. Then I studied the grammar and hired a tutor to practice speaking and to help me understand the grammar. C1 in a year and a half.
To me, the "fluency moment" with German was when I went to cafe in Stuttgart and asked stuff without thinking. Before that I was translating in my mind what I was going to say and what I was told, but this time I just... went ahead, no mental translations. Felt so good! Specially because German is a language I learnt as an adult. I was very happy with myself (^_^)
@@reggiebuffat For me learning polish to B1 took around 6-8 months by using anki + watching native content like shows and stuff with polish subtitles once then once again without subtitles, insanely effective strategy ngl
@@reggiebuffat Roughly two years. I started in Frankfurt that has a more "standard" German but then I moved to Stuttgart and I had to partially reset what I learnt because Baden-Württemberg and specially Stuttgart have a very peculiar way to speak and write German. Sitting in the S-Bahn listening to the announcements helped me a lot (same phrases and places, repeated over and over, often with a translation to English and someone speaking out loud).

I understand what you're saying. I'm learning English. In my case, my language is Spanish, and sometimes I don't know if I'm really speaking it well. But I want to give you some great news. Your Spanish is pretty good. When you read it, you pronounce it very well and you can be understood very well. Congratulations!
Eso es porque el español se pronuncia como se escribe. Una vez que sabes el sonido de las letras, podés leer cualquier palabra nueva. Hasta tenemos tildes para saber que sílaba entonar. En ingles se pronuncian las letras de forma aleatoria. Cuando un anglosajón se cruza con una palabra nueva no puede saber al 100% como se pronuncia. Hay varios videos de comedia enfocados en esta particularidad de la lengua inglesa.
Duolingo was great for me learning hiragana and katakana, but after that it kind of, uh.. sucks. Like if you actually want to get to a good level, then you should switch after learning those first two by heart. Livakivi has like 2-3 videos on why and a great full guide that involves immersion (e.g watching anime) and using Anki.
I've heard opinions that as for European languages duolingo might be good as for Asian languages it sucks. But I wish you luck! It might be a good starting point
@@GauranshChhalotre Search up Livakivis ultimate guide to japanese, and stick to that. (Remember though that immersion is more important than Anki) Duolingo won't get you far.
I am Canadian, so I was forced to take French classes from day 1 until it became an elective in grade 10. From grade 1 to grade 9 I learned the phrase "Je ne parle pas le français" (I do not speak french). I have been on Duolingo from the start, I was in the test phase of the app. I can now read full 1700 century French manuscript from French mathematicians and philosophers. It works. Well, I work.
When I took the placement test for French, I realized I’d forgotten most of my French classes, which I took until grade 11. I can still read French, but not speak or write anything but the very basics. I currently and taking Japanese in Duolingo, but I want to see if my autistic children are able to learn with Duolingo, so I might start French with them.
@@Rabellaka. I’m autistic and trying to learn Japanese on Duolingo. I’m only on day 73 but I think it’s working. I still don’t know a lot but the other night, I realized I could understand a decent amount of dialogue when I was falling asleep watching a Japanese movie. That said, I listen to a lot of Japanese music, which probably accelerates things a bit.
My duolingo tips: I use Duolingo on desktop, you get more typing exercises this way, where you have to type out everything (sometimes you have to press the "make more difficult" button) I look away from the exercises with audio in order to practice listening without reading I supplement Duolingo with a conversation with a native on italki every now and then, where I would bring questions about stuff I have doubts about on Duolingo, grammar, nuances of meaning, also making sure it isn't Duolingo which is incorrect, it happens. If I encounter similar sentences I usually try to use different structures to test out my mastery of the underlying rules and synonyms I sometimes talk to myself while doing exercices saying in a target language stuff like "I just made a mistake I feel kinda stupid but what can you do that's how you learn..." I can go on and on with monologues like that. Also Duolingo often punishes you for mistakes that don't really matter like typos or misreading the original English sentence or just writing something synonymous but not close enough - don't beat yourself over that.
I'm sure it varies... but how does a 'typical' lesson on italki look like? I'm contemplating on taking lessons there, but not sure what they look like. Is it just talking, working with a book, specific sheets etc.?
@@91Muzzle this is entirely up to you and the tutor, the platform just functions as an intermediary between you and the tutors, it doesn't enforce much in the way of rules apart from the fact that you can report misbehaviour, demand returns for absence and the like. You have some "test lessons" which are much cheaper to check the various tutors out. In my experience you can just tell a tutor what you want and they'll be open to do just that.
@@91Muzzle you can choose teachers and they will have a description in their profile on what type of lessons you can take. There are a ton of teachers who offer just conversational practice. I did that in Korean, we talked about random topics, or the teacher would ask what topic I would like to talk about. some offer entire courses with grammar books and more typical lesson structures. you can take trial lessons for a reduced fee.
I actually got less motivated to do Duolingo because I heard all the bad stuff from people about how you can’t actually learn a language that way, but this video definitely changed my mind on that. I also think it’s interesting that Spanish and German are the languages you mention because those are actually both of the languages I had been working on the most! It brings a whole new drive to my learning to see that using apps isn’t a total waste.
There are just far better methods and apps (Babbel, Memrise, even Anki if u do flashcards yourself, Italki for speaking). He's okay but.... after 2000 days of other methods it could have been much better :> Duolingo is good for getting started with a language, but i'd say that's about it.
The problem is that people comparte it to actually taking language lessons, which is an unfair comparison and of course Duolingo is not effective in that sense. But as he said, the fact that you just fill small gaps in your day with this tiny lessons, you can actually see the benefit
@@rlsvid Yeah, hate those comparisons. Of course it's not the same as a legitimate course from a professional teacher. The reason I'm doing this is because I can't afford the better way.
I learned Spanish by dating a Spanish girl, moving to Spain and buying a bar in her village. I even married her (in Spanish) in the church opposite the bar. Now I only speak Spanish to my cat "Hola Gatita!"

Exactly what I was gong to say, thank you. I personally love to use Pimsleur Approach as a “staple” language tool, however I supplement with duolingo/ and others. But more importantly, I try to consuming a wide variety of sources of media and entertainment from the target language.

I got fluent in Japanese over a dozen years ago and hospitalized in Japan several years ago and was actually pretty excited to be in the hospital talking to people about my conditions/random stuff several hours a day and learning about the immune system in Japanese with doctors/nurses lol 😂 I even got an ambulance to pick me up in Japanese, and normally they said if I didn’t speak Japanese they wouldn’t have come lmao this was in Tokyo so some people would die in emergencies if they didn’t know Japanese. Because they don’t always have translators available. Knowing languages can save lives and I can relate to the satisfaction of using them in emergencies lol 😂
As a Spanish speaker, I will try to speak to you in English just for practising my language skills. Besides, there are some accents you couldn't understand. (I from Central Western Argentina, near Chile, a very different accent)
I switched to Babbel after you had that sponsored video, and I appreciate the fact that babble actually explaines grammar so much! After like three years or using Duolingo to learn Spanish, I now finally understand when and why to use esto/a/e or eso/a/e. I'm genuinely so much less frustrated now, because I don't get "this is wrong but I'm not telling you why" type mistakes anymore. Also, the app is a lot less buggy than Duolingo. I still think Duo is fantastic for getting started though!
something duolingo doesn’t show you (so a lot of people miss it) is before you start each unit’s exercises there’s a detailsd breakdown of what you’re learning that explains all the grammar. the one you’re mentioning here is actually real early in Duolingo
The thing is, back in the old design, the grammar tips of the Indonesian module of Duolingo were even better than Babbel's in some aspects, but now it's all gone. Babbel only has Newcomer to Beginner 2 and no more. If they'd ever extend the course, I'd buy a paid subscription in a heartbeat, but now I'm just waiting. Duolingo's Indonesian does not go much far away either but it did the work for me for a time.

Great video! You're one of the few guys on UA-cam to not focus on learning a language FAST and I find that to be quite refreshing. It is so easy to lose motivation when you see you're not going as fast as these other influencers say you should. Funnily enough we've both reached about the same point on the spanish path as of now. There's one thing I'd like to add though, about the writing section at the end of the story lessons. While I agree the app is basically useless when it comes to reviewing your answer (as you've shown writing "no no no no" 😂), I still find it to be quite useful to play along and write whatever they want me to write after each story. You have to push yourself a little more (since there isn't much incentive, as you said), but it is one of the few exercises where you have to come up with your own sentences using your aquired vocabulary and grammar notions. I feel like most of the other exercises mainly focus on translating and understanding spanish and while that is quite essential, I found out (in my case at least) that writing and actually using these notions I've been learning was much harder than just understanding them. As if using and understanding were two muscles and that I had only trained the one for understanding. That's how it is for me, at least, I know everybody's experience is different (as you've already proven with your spanish conversation story), but I felt it might be a relevant point

Hi Evan, I started using Duolingo after watching one of your videos during lockdown. I've managed to keep a good streak going (apart from losing a year's worth when my phone died in Denmark 😢) I'm persevering with Spanish although go back to refreshing my French from time to time. My main motivation is keeping my brain active after reaching 65 which came as quite a shock!
You could try learning a language with a different script for additional brain exercise. I think Greek or Russian are easier, because they write vowels, unlike Arabic. I picked up Greek for that purpose and found it hard enough (at 60) even though it is a European language.
@@oakstrong1 Greek & Russian are some of the hardest languages to learn, initially because of the script. I don't know Russian, but Greek is further complicated by having a lot more grammar rules than English. Take for example nouns. In English we simply have 2 versions of a noun, the singular & the plural. In Greek, you have 5 separate cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative & vocative. Each case has a specific function that indicates the meaning of a noun in relation to other words in a sentence.) There are singular & plural, & also 3 genders (masculine, feminine & neuter). Take articles as an example. In English, we use a single word for the defininate article, THE. In Greek, there is the choice depending on the gender, number & case. The choices are: ὁ - masculine, singular, nominative τοῦ - masculaine, singular, genitive τῷ - masculine, singular, dative τόν - masculaine, singular, accusative ἡ - feminine, singular, nominative τῆς - feminine, singular, genitive τῆ - feminine, singular, dative τῆς - feminine, singular, accusative τό - neuter, singular, nominative τοῦ - neuter, singular, genitive τῷ - neuter, singular, dative τό - neuter, singular, accusative (The vocative forms are something completely separate.) These are the words THE for all singular nouns, depending on their gender & case. There are the same number again for plural nouns. There is a similar list for the indefinite article A. So we have examples like: the man - ο άνθρωπος the men - οι άντρες I saw the man - Είδα τον άνθρωπο I gave the man money - Έδωσα χρήματα στον άνθρωπο Do you still think Greek is easier? I think the easiest European languages to learn after Spanish is Italian or Portuguese or one of the other Spanish languages, like Catalan. I speak Valenciano, which reminds me pretty much of a mixture of mainly Spanish with some Latin & French thrown in. Greek is the hardest I have learned, on a par with Thai. Greek is difficult because of the grammar, Thai because it is a tonal language (the pitch of the word changes its meaning) & I'm not used to that. There are 5 tones in Thai: mid, low, falling, high & rising.

165 days into Italian... FYI, Gems are not "useless" if you are on the free version. If I make 5 mistakes in a day, I have to wait hours before being able to continue (or do practice lessons to earn a gem) OR I can "buy" Hearts with gems(if I have enough).
@dees3179 Seemingly, only by doing practice lessons (when I have zero hearts) and occasionally (rare) I get a temporary SuperUser period of a couple of days.
I'm at the point where I'm seriously considering buying the full subscription. I have a lot of down time at work where I could be doing it, but I run out of hearts. I also look up stuff to avoid losing hearts and I think I would learn more if I was prepared to make mistakes,

I learned English in 4 months in a American academy, and now I work for an American company. I feel proud of my self.
13:30 That's me. I'm on a 900+ day streak on Duolingo Spanish, but most of the time I just do one of the listen or speak lessons at like 10:30PM because I forgot to do a lesson earlier.
What I've done that has helped me a lot is trying to do one lesson in the morning and one in the afternoon for the double XP chests. That way, I'm incentivized to spend twice as much time on the app and it's twice as hard to forget to do a lesson.
I did 500 days of Norwegian on Duolingo. Went to Norway and realised I wasn't able to understand what people were saying. I can watch Norwegian shows subtitled and understand but conversational is useless from Duolingo. You need face to face.
@evan btw, Norwegian is an epic language for English speakers to learn because of the amount of oh wow surprises. I loved it. Just slightly pointless for me because most Norwegians speak better English than me anyway.
A few years ago, I was learning Swedish with Duolingo (and a Native speaker at work). I actually learned more about the history of English than Swedish. So MANY words sounds the same as English, even if they are spelled different. Then I tried Norwegian and it was even closer to English. I knew they were similar but 🤯.
Also, whoever was doing the Norwegian sentences had a great sense of humor. One was a quote from the Princess Bride, another about Princess Leia having hair that looked like cinnamon buns. 😂

I appreciate this video so much, i've been wanting to learn a second language for years and i just made up my mind January the 1st this year to start duolingo Spanish. I find myself so excited everyday to study just because i am seeing my improvements everyday in it. I give myself by end of year to hold a proper conversation with a native spanish speaker

spent two years learning spanish in high school, then met a spanish friend in uni who recently took me to spain for the first time. speaking spanish there gave me such a confidence boost to continue my two year streak on duo!
I really enjoyed this one! I'm on day 1220 of Duolingo Japanese. I'm certainly not fluent, but boy is it awesome to be able to make my thoughts understood even if only in short, incomplete sentences. For me, Duolingo is all about establishing a presence of that language in my daily life, and I'm grateful for it.
Im on 51 days on Spanish. I could probably get by asking for basic directions & ordering food on our trip to Mexico in March. I swear Ive learned more in 51 days than my entire grade 11 year.
@@liambyrne591 I went to an immersive English language week some years ago and this happened to me. Also, as I work in English some times I can't find the word I want in Spanish, but I have it in English. 😄 (I'm from Spain)
I don't usually comment on videos.. But this one honestly took me by surprise. It's informative, relatable, and in no way pressuring. Instead, it's motivating and accommodating. Now that the Japanese Duolingo course finally has the speaking option, I think I'll get back to using it again! I'd been so jealous of the options European language courses have 😅
@Rabellaka. One thing that I didn't understand at first was how to make the small sized characters っ instead of つ, for example. You just press "x" and then type the character.
This was a very well made video, I'm currently mid way through Section 3, been doing Duolingo for like 400 days. And I had a lot of questions about the future.
I can only imagine how exciting that must be to finally have a conversation after studying it for years. I’ve always started speaking with people well before I reach the level of fluency that you did so it’s interesting to hear about the opposite approach.
I really wish there was a British English option on Duolingo (British English to Spain Spanish would be perfect). But still, I'm enjoying learning Spanish on Duolingo!

I learned Spanish as a second language, and then German, and when I was volunteering somewhere and talking with someone from Central America, I learned that I have apparently developed a German accent in Spanish and was asked if I was from Berlin. I was surprised and had to say no, I am from the United States. I am happy to report that I finished the German Duolingo tree, and I am now focused on using outside resources to get to B2. Learning a language is really fun and I am glad you have had a lot of success in Spanish Evan!
Dude, you have so many gems!! Too bad you can’t send me any! lol. And thanks for the “discuss the story” tip! I was writing them out but got tired of doing so & have been skipping. My daughter’s using Duolingo in school for Spanish, though she started with Norwegian for fun. I did some Norsk, too, but I haven’t practiced it in a long time. (I was under the delusion that I could juggle 4-5 languages at once but I have since fallen off. I’ve discovered that I don’t remember as much French as I thought I would.) I’m in Unit 25 or 26 in Spanish after 2 years but I got to skip a bunch of the beginner lessons. I needed a refresher since I don’t speak it regularly. My vocabulary has improved & i’m remembering what I learned in high school a millennia ago! I still have trouble understanding the characters like Zari who speak really fast because I’m hard of hearing. Even with hearing aids, I miss things. I still get stage fright when asked to speak in Spanish but I think I could get by.
I just hit the one year mark for my streak. My top 3 languages I alternate between are Italian, Norwegian, and Swedish. I am also hard of hearing and struggle with some of the words. Especially when they speak fast. I tend to mess up on some of them because I can’t make out the word clearly.
Great vid - super useful to see those more advanced lessons (I'm in early A1) Hit day 300 in German yesterday. I've been through periods of feeling like it's a waste of time but then realised (like you said) days where you only maintain your streak aren't really helping. I spent a few days in Berlin around day 90 and honestly being able to ask for stuff in a bakery then understand and answer a couple simple questions made it all worthwhile and hugely motivating. I'm in this for real now! I keep reminding myself years ago I tried to get a haircut in Göttingen, got inside the door realising I had no clue and all I could say was ich möchte der bzzzzz with appropriate mime ;)

What I’ve loved about Duolingo is that it feels pretty effortless.. like I CAN just take a few minutes and mindlessly do the thing… and now im picking up bits of French in music and at the airport! It ingrains it so it you don’t have to think so much about the words and you can just get used to the patterns more intuitively!
Evan, your story reminded me and my mum of the time we were on holiday in Italy and they gave us a French menu at dinner by mistake. My parents worked most of it out with what they could remember from GCSE (I hadn't learned any French by that point) and when the waiter came, he confirmed our orders in German! It all worked out in the end though :)
This is the first video i watch without subtitules and understand almost everything what you saying. Im far away to be fluent on english as I wish, but the big proyects are made of small steps so we have to be proud of our progress. Im glad you want to learn two others languages, in my case these are english and french :)
I love your Duolingo videos. For me, whenever a new one comes out, it's always sort of like a little event. Like "oh what does he have to say about it now?" And it's always so interesting and motivating. Sometimes people are too harsh on Duo, but I've learned SO MUCH since I started using it about four years ago. It doesn't work for everyone and that is completly fine. It works for me and I really enjoy it. I'm very prou of how far i've come with my english and french leassons. I've had my ups and downs like those weeks you mentioned, but I always come back. And slowly but surely, my dream of becoming a polyglot gets closer. I also listen to music and watch some videos here and there. But the majority of my french comes from Duo. Everyone has their own journey that changes and adapts, I'm enjoying mine so far. I studied Spanish in high school (which is several decades ago), and have found Duolingo to be a great way to practice at my A2-B1 level, and you seem pretty solid at B2. Similarly, I just finished another course in it (Scottish Gaelic) and found that it's not really sufficient to have a conversation about anything other than the basics, or even read mass-media news (BBC Alba, though I can usually muddle through an article with the help of Am Faclair Beag, the online Gaelic-English dictionary), so I'm probably an A1 after about 2 years. So Duolingo's effectiveness is variable, depending on what language you are trying to learn. Major ones -- Spanish, German, Italian, French -- all seem to be pretty good. Minor ones -- Gaelic, Welsh, Irish, Romanian --- are more of a taster, to get you into the idea of learning more independently.
If you want to really learn Welsh try out 'Say Something in Welsh.' I am a native Irish speaker, by the way, and their Irish course is awful. I wish they had human beings doing the voices instead of... Whatever they went with.
@@blindknitterthat's one good thing about the Scottish Gaelic course - Duolingo worked with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the preeminent institution for Scottish Gaelic in the world. All the voices are recorded, varying from one of the course designer's grandmothers, to Joy Dunlop (a singer and Gaelic television presenter). I thought about trying the Irish course after finishing Gaelic, as the grammar is similar and there's a lot of cognates, but decided to go back to Spanish to brush up.

Great comment, delivered in multi-languages. Soy Americano -- trato de aprovecharme de cualquier oportunidad de aprender mas Espanol ... especialmente de hablantes nativos... did I say that right? And yes, I know a few words in German too, from a class I took years ago as a college freshman. I think I got a 'D'. Had little interest, but now (at 72), I'm amazed at how much German I still know! (Heck I deserved at least a D+ !!!)
It’s not really about the number of days though, it’s about the number of hours. 15 minutes a day for 2000 days is only 500 total hours. Cambridge (the publisher) estimate 100 to 200 hours of dedicated study with a teacher to go up a level. So 500 hours should have you in the B1 class.
@@joepiekl One thing worth a note, I'll say their hour estimates for C1 and C2 are really, really optimistic. If you get to a C2 in 1000 hours in a non-closely related language, you're a very, VERY talented language learner. But yeah, hours of study are a better measure than chronological time.
@@tomrogue13Well, Spanish is one of the most closely related languages to English (Via Rome and the French), and the Slavic languages (I.e. Polish, Russian, etc), are as different as can be, despite coming from the same original source, Proto-IndoEuropean. I don’t mean to diminish anyone and their journey, but I am inclined to agree that if one did not have this level, almost bare minimum, after a half-decade + of daily usage, I would be very concerned. Coming from an English native who learned Spanish in the US. Edit: I must add however, it is incredibly impressive to become intermediately fluent in a third language, with Duolingo alone.
I’ve only been doing Duolingo for like 6 months and my ability to converse in basic Spanish with people in my area has absolutely improved. It’s actually been really awesome to be able to talk to people with limited English, whether it’s with restaurant staff, a random lady at the park asking me where I bought something, or meeting someone from Facebook marketplace to sell something (all real examples)
After 690 days on Duolingo my understanding of spanish is aprx B1, but I also listen to podcasts on youtube, watch films etc. Struggle to speak though.

33 days into Norwegian! Yeah, it's a weird one to pick, but my Mom came from there and I grew up hearing the language around my grandparents and visiting Norwegian relatives. I've always wanted to try it, and now I have the time.
@@CD3MC Oh, I'm going to -- I'm on Section 2 Unit 5, and I figure I'm going to get through the 40 units in this section and then start with online tutoring/conversation, or maybe a full course with a live teacher. I'm pretty sure my pronounciation is crap. One thing I really don't like about Duolingo is the scattergun way they present grammar and rules -- you're supposed to 'pick it up'. but I'd really like to have a clear explanation of the differences between prepositional pronouns, for example.
@@jrochest4642 Same, I learned a bit of Spanish with Busuu and I really liked how up front they were with the grammar there. On Duolingo I learned way more about Norwegian grammar from just googling thinks that confused me (like hennes vs sin). I'm currently in section 2 too, but currently try to transition to watching/listening to a lot of Norwegian content (mostly NRK) which Duolingo actually helped me with. I originally started learning Norwegian over a year ago from a book, but it's really an unfortunate way to pick up on pronunciation and get a feel for the language. So Duolingo really helped me revive the knowledge I had lost after pausing learning the language and helped me to better understand Norwegian spoken content. But it is lacking and I think I'll go back to my book for vocab and grammar, as well as the many videos on youtube available to learn Norwegian. A real course would be the best thing obviously, but I don't have the time and money. However there is a group of scandinavian language learners at my uni that just meet each other to talk so I'll try to find the time for that. I just recently started to think in Norwegian "by accident" without having to force myself to, but that's mostly because I spend so many hours listening to Norwegian I think Duolingo is a good way to revive a language you 'forgot', when you're being lazy, but you really shouldn't limit yourself to it. And I also think I really need to work on my pronunciation, but what kinda helped me realise my shortcomings is to speak a sentence instead of writing it down, when you get a little microphone in a text field. Because that actually doesn't just say you're correct on what ever sentence you're supposed to pronounce, but chooses the words you're most similar too, which made me realise I really need to work on my 'r's to distinguish certain words. And it also forces you to translate more difficult sentences on the fly and speak them instead of just reading an already translated sentence or repeating a sentence already said aloud

I started Japanese on duolingo earlier this year, I am studying Japanese for years already and I also have classes, but I thought it would be a good little practice to add to my japanese learning journey
I knew completing Duolingo German was worth it when we visited Köln and the locals didn't automatically flip to English when I spoke to them. I was also good enough to inspire my husband to learn French for our next holiday to France 🥳
@kingdra-winston3500 Yes, definitely worth doing. I'm a big advocate for Duolingo. The German course takes you to B1 which is more than adequate for travelling. I also use the many resources on UA-cam like Easy German and I would say you need to do this to progress to reading books in the language or work in the country. They also give you good listening practice which is required for language learning. There are now some useful grammar tips within each Duolingo unit which didn't used to be there. I'm not too hung up about the grammar, but my husband has bought himself a basic French grammar book to go alongside his learning. I would also say to keep going on unit 1. It seems boring and irrelevant, but beyond that, you start learning the useful stuff.

I can passably speak Spanish with my Latino friends, and my opinion is that Duolingo isn’t going to teach you how to speak very well (it takes practice), and it probably will not help you with grammar, but it WILL help you stay active with the language and increase your vocabulary. I recommend it alongside having conversations and practicing

Tiny nerdy detail: I’m still in section 3 and do have these lesson types. But one difference I noticed is for me the “podcast” host speaks in English and only the callers are in the language I’m learning. So that’s one way it’ll get more difficult on later sections.

No sé si algún día leas mi comentario (o algún anglosajón seguidor de este contenido) pero cómo un Colombiano (y por ende nativo del español) me sorprende muy gratamente, ver cómo hay cada vez más y más gente interesada en hablar nuestro idioma. A veces aprender idiomas puede ser complicado; me sucede con el inglés (caso contrario jaja) pero vamos que se puede. Pd. si se nota que Duolingo te ha enseñado bien. Hablas bastante fluido y se te entiende al instante
Just heading towards 1000 days in Swedish, I've been at the daily refresh end of the course for a couple of months now and really hoping they might add some of those podcast or story lessons in somewhere. I feel like I'm at a much lower conversational level than I should be after 2+ years of consistent practise; I can understand pretty much any text or speech at this point but I really have issues with complex sentences when talking myself. I've been watching a number of swedish speaking youtubers and watching shows and movies to take my understanding that extra step towards slang usage and cultural understanding but I'm really finding it hard to practise my speech. Guess its time to bite the bullet and just go spend some time in Sweden, I really want to try living there for a while to see if it clicks with me but don't want to take that plunge without feeling confident in my ability to communicate clearly.
If you’re on the refresh then yeah it might be better to move on to a resource that continues you on your journey (with some immersion for good measure)
Few tips for you: really keep talking in Swedish in Sweden. They may talk to you in english (faster and they basically speak english at a good level) but keep answering in swedish. Also, thats just something we all struggle with. I'm taking real life classes and apart from the fact i'm learning swedish, i don't feel like speaking swedish and still find myself using really basic sentences. Maybe if you learn the grammar structure you'll get better in longer sentences but thats kind of usual anyway
If it’s within your means, I’d highly recommend finding a tutor. I’m living in France at the moment and in the year before I came here, I had weekly lessons with a tutor from italki. Being here surrounded by the language has been the absolute best way to progress in the language, but having a tutor really helped prepare me for my arrival!
They've recently made it so you can only do a lesson to earn hearts when you've completely run out of hearts and I absolutely hate it. Sometimes I just want an easier lesson to recap knowledge I already have, especially when I'm not feeling focused enough to learn a ton of new words. The only way I can do that now is to purposely make five mistakes??
Does it let you do multiple lessons to get back up to five, or just one lesson, which is basically useless? Mine has stopped letting me earn hearts recently too and I’m at a loss about what is going on.
I do Duolingo and get speaking practice from my mom who is fluent in Spanish. She corrects me when I get something wrong. I wish she taught me Spanish when I was little but I’m making up for it now.
I started using Duolingo in 2014 and between 2014 and 2019 I've studied english, then even in 2019 I've started learning German, and since last year i started with japonese, Chinese, Korean and dutch, and some years i have been gifted by the app with the Plus Subscription, and i Hear many podcasts, in english, german, Dutch and Italian , and also read newspapers, books and News, And also watch Videos and series in these languages, I am Brazilian and while iwas writing this comment i was thinking in german

I’m attempting to learn Ukrainian on Duolingo. I learned Spanish in highschool so it’s kind of nice to have that knowledge because now I know what kinds of things to be looking for when learning like conjugations and tenses and the like which Duo has yet to teach me

Agreed. I’ve been learning Italian for over 2 years now (I just do one lesson a day - only takes me a couple minutes) and the most validating moments are when I encounter Italian words and sentences in the wild and find that I have full or almost full understanding of them.

Once you know the words and the grammar, I think one of the things that help the most is straight up speaking the language no matter how bad you are or how many mistakes you are. Most native speakers won't mind at all that you are making mistakes or struggling, they will actually be impressed and excited that you are even trying to learn the language.

In high school I saw multiple foreign exchange students get from an elementary level of english to almost being as proficient as the rest of the class in under 9 months. I really enjoyed helping them learn english.
I normally ask people to correct me, so I know what to correct. People can be incredibly patient and helpful if they see you putting the effort.
@silviasanchez648 that's true, the only place I have seen that not happen is Montréal. I had gone there on a quick vacation just to get out of town for a few days and thought I could brush up on my French, which I hadn't spoken since college. And I found that the majority of servers in restaurants are just too busy to mess around with it. The second they see you hesitating over a word, they switch into English. The only one who spoke French with me was the son of the owner of a Nepalese restaurant. He was wonderful, and the people at the next table who had grown up in New Jersey were very complimentary and kind as well
@@LindaC616 I can kind of understand that though. You can't just go and do it everywhere as some people are busy so they don't have time to wait for you to figure out the words.
To learn spanish I bought a frequency dictionary with the 2000 most common spanish words. I did this because 80% of the language are these 2000 most spoken words. Then I just listened to spanish videos on youtube and podcasts so that I can better my comprehension and learn how the language is used. Then I studied the grammar and hired a tutor to practice speaking and to help me understand the grammar. C1 in a year and a half.

To me, the "fluency moment" with German was when I went to cafe in Stuttgart and asked stuff without thinking. Before that I was translating in my mind what I was going to say and what I was told, but this time I just... went ahead, no mental translations. Felt so good! Specially because German is a language I learnt as an adult. I was very happy with myself (^_^)

@@reggiebuffat For me learning polish to B1 took around 6-8 months by using anki + watching native content like shows and stuff with polish subtitles once then once again without subtitles, insanely effective strategy ngl

I started in Frankfurt that has a more "standard" German but then I moved to Stuttgart and I had to partially reset what I learnt because Baden-Württemberg and specially Stuttgart have a very peculiar way to speak and write German. Sitting in the S-Bahn listening to the announcements helped me a lot (same phrases and places, repeated over and over, often with a translation to English and someone speaking out loud).
I'm really impressed! Hopefully I'll get there with Spanish soon and eventually with French.

Your Spanish is pretty good. When you read it, you pronounce it very well and you can be understood very well. Congratulations!
Eso es porque el español se pronuncia como se escribe. Una vez que sabes el sonido de las letras, podés leer cualquier palabra nueva. Hasta tenemos tildes para saber que sílaba entonar.
En ingles se pronuncian las letras de forma aleatoria. Cuando un anglosajón se cruza con una palabra nueva no puede saber al 100% como se pronuncia.
Hay varios videos de comedia enfocados en esta particularidad de la lengua inglesa.

i am currently learning japanese from duolingo and this video was very informational as i just started last week, thank you kevin de bruyne.
Duolingo was great for me learning hiragana and katakana, but after that it kind of, uh.. sucks. Like if you actually want to get to a good level, then you should switch after learning those first two by heart. Livakivi has like 2-3 videos on why and a great full guide that involves immersion (e.g watching anime) and using Anki.

I am Canadian, so I was forced to take French classes from day 1 until it became an elective in grade 10. From grade 1 to grade 9 I learned the phrase "Je ne parle pas le français" (I do not speak french).
I have been on Duolingo from the start, I was in the test phase of the app.
I can now read full 1700 century French manuscript from French mathematicians and philosophers.
It works. Well, I work.
When I took the placement test for French, I realized I’d forgotten most of my French classes, which I took until grade 11. I can still read French, but not speak or write anything but the very basics.
I currently and taking Japanese in Duolingo, but I want to see if my autistic children are able to learn with Duolingo, so I might start French with them.

@@Rabellaka. I’m autistic and trying to learn Japanese on Duolingo. I’m only on day 73 but I think it’s working. I still don’t know a lot but the other night, I realized I could understand a decent amount of dialogue when I was falling asleep watching a Japanese movie. That said, I listen to a lot of Japanese music, which probably accelerates things a bit.
You didn't use only Duolingo. Duolingo is really bad. You basically have to guess conjugation because they don't teachh any, nor grammar lol
My duolingo tips:
I use Duolingo on desktop, you get more typing exercises this way, where you have to type out everything (sometimes you have to press the "make more difficult" button)
I look away from the exercises with audio in order to practice listening without reading
I supplement Duolingo with a conversation with a native on italki every now and then, where I would bring questions about stuff I have doubts about on Duolingo, grammar, nuances of meaning, also making sure it isn't Duolingo which is incorrect, it happens.
If I encounter similar sentences I usually try to use different structures to test out my mastery of the underlying rules and synonyms
I sometimes talk to myself while doing exercices saying in a target language stuff like "I just made a mistake I feel kinda stupid but what can you do that's how you learn..." I can go on and on with monologues like that.
Also Duolingo often punishes you for mistakes that don't really matter like typos or misreading the original English sentence or just writing something synonymous but not close enough - don't beat yourself over that.
I'm sure it varies... but how does a 'typical' lesson on italki look like? I'm contemplating on taking lessons there, but not sure what they look like. Is it just talking, working with a book, specific sheets etc.?
@@91Muzzle this is entirely up to you and the tutor, the platform just functions as an intermediary between you and the tutors, it doesn't enforce much in the way of rules apart from the fact that you can report misbehaviour, demand returns for absence and the like. You have some "test lessons" which are much cheaper to check the various tutors out. In my experience you can just tell a tutor what you want and they'll be open to do just that.
@@91Muzzle you can choose teachers and they will have a description in their profile on what type of lessons you can take. There are a ton of teachers who offer just conversational practice. I did that in Korean, we talked about random topics, or the teacher would ask what topic I would like to talk about. some offer entire courses with grammar books and more typical lesson structures. you can take trial lessons for a reduced fee.

I actually got less motivated to do Duolingo because I heard all the bad stuff from people about how you can’t actually learn a language that way, but this video definitely changed my mind on that. I also think it’s interesting that Spanish and German are the languages you mention because those are actually both of the languages I had been working on the most! It brings a whole new drive to my learning to see that using apps isn’t a total waste.
There are just far better methods and apps (Babbel, Memrise, even Anki if u do flashcards yourself, Italki for speaking). He's okay but.... after 2000 days of other methods it could have been much better :> Duolingo is good for getting started with a language, but i'd say that's about it.
The problem is that people comparte it to actually taking language lessons, which is an unfair comparison and of course Duolingo is not effective in that sense.
But as he said, the fact that you just fill small gaps in your day with this tiny lessons, you can actually see the benefit
@@rlsvid Yeah, hate those comparisons. Of course it's not the same as a legitimate course from a professional teacher. The reason I'm doing this is because I can't afford the better way.
I learned Spanish by dating a Spanish girl, moving to Spain and buying a bar in her village. I even married her (in Spanish) in the church opposite the bar. Now I only speak Spanish to my cat "Hola Gatita!"

Exactly what I was gong to say, thank you. I personally love to use Pimsleur Approach as a “staple” language tool, however I supplement with duolingo/ and others. But more importantly, I try to consuming a wide variety of sources of media and entertainment from the target language.

I got fluent in Japanese over a dozen years ago and hospitalized in Japan several years ago and was actually pretty excited to be in the hospital talking to people about my conditions/random stuff several hours a day and learning about the immune system in Japanese with doctors/nurses lol 😂
I even got an ambulance to pick me up in Japanese, and normally they said if I didn’t speak Japanese they wouldn’t have come lmao this was in Tokyo so some people would die in emergencies if they didn’t know Japanese. Because they don’t always have translators available. Knowing languages can save lives and I can relate to the satisfaction of using them in emergencies lol 😂
As a Spanish speaker, I will try to speak to you in English just for practising my language skills. Besides, there are some accents you couldn't understand. (I from Central Western Argentina, near Chile, a very different accent)
I switched to Babbel after you had that sponsored video, and I appreciate the fact that babble actually explaines grammar so much! After like three years or using Duolingo to learn Spanish, I now finally understand when and why to use esto/a/e or eso/a/e. I'm genuinely so much less frustrated now, because I don't get "this is wrong but I'm not telling you why" type mistakes anymore. Also, the app is a lot less buggy than Duolingo. I still think Duo is fantastic for getting started though!
Yeah Babbel is soooo much better for grammar and TEACHING than duo I'd say. I breezed through their B2 German section which had so much good info

something duolingo doesn’t show you (so a lot of people miss it) is before you start each unit’s exercises there’s a detailsd breakdown of what you’re learning that explains all the grammar.
the one you’re mentioning here is actually real early in Duolingo
The thing is, back in the old design, the grammar tips of the Indonesian module of Duolingo were even better than Babbel's in some aspects, but now it's all gone. Babbel only has Newcomer to Beginner 2 and no more. If they'd ever extend the course, I'd buy a paid subscription in a heartbeat, but now I'm just waiting. Duolingo's Indonesian does not go much far away either but it did the work for me for a time.

Great video! You're one of the few guys on UA-cam to not focus on learning a language FAST and I find that to be quite refreshing. It is so easy to lose motivation when you see you're not going as fast as these other influencers say you should.
Funnily enough we've both reached about the same point on the spanish path as of now. There's one thing I'd like to add though, about the writing section at the end of the story lessons. While I agree the app is basically useless when it comes to reviewing your answer (as you've shown writing "no no no no" 😂), I still find it to be quite useful to play along and write whatever they want me to write after each story. You have to push yourself a little more (since there isn't much incentive, as you said), but it is one of the few exercises where you have to come up with your own sentences using your aquired vocabulary and grammar notions. I feel like most of the other exercises mainly focus on translating and understanding spanish and while that is quite essential, I found out (in my case at least) that writing and actually using these notions I've been learning was much harder than just understanding them. As if using and understanding were two muscles and that I had only trained the one for understanding. That's how it is for me, at least, I know everybody's experience is different (as you've already proven with your spanish conversation story), but I felt it might be a relevant point

Hi Evan, I started using Duolingo after watching one of your videos during lockdown. I've managed to keep a good streak going (apart from losing a year's worth when my phone died in Denmark 😢) I'm persevering with Spanish although go back to refreshing my French from time to time.
My main motivation is keeping my brain active after reaching 65 which came as quite a shock!
You could try learning a language with a different script for additional brain exercise. I think Greek or Russian are easier, because they write vowels, unlike Arabic. I picked up Greek for that purpose and found it hard enough (at 60) even though it is a European language.
@@oakstrong1 Greek & Russian are some of the hardest languages to learn, initially because of the script. I don't know Russian, but Greek is further complicated by having a lot more grammar rules than English. Take for example nouns. In English we simply have 2 versions of a noun, the singular & the plural. In Greek, you have 5 separate cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative & vocative. Each case has a specific function that indicates the meaning of a noun in relation to other words in a sentence.) There are singular & plural, & also 3 genders (masculine, feminine & neuter).
Take articles as an example. In English, we use a single word for the defininate article, THE. In Greek, there is the choice depending on the gender, number & case. The choices are:
ὁ - masculine, singular, nominative
τοῦ - masculaine, singular, genitive
τῷ - masculine, singular, dative
τόν - masculaine, singular, accusative
ἡ - feminine, singular, nominative
τῆς - feminine, singular, genitive
τῆ - feminine, singular, dative
τῆς - feminine, singular, accusative
τό - neuter, singular, nominative
τοῦ - neuter, singular, genitive
τῷ - neuter, singular, dative
τό - neuter, singular, accusative
(The vocative forms are something completely separate.)
These are the words THE for all singular nouns, depending on their gender & case. There are the same number again for plural nouns. There is a similar list for the indefinite article A.
So we have examples like:
the man - ο άνθρωπος
the men - οι άντρες
I saw the man - Είδα τον άνθρωπο
I gave the man money - Έδωσα χρήματα στον άνθρωπο
Do you still think Greek is easier? I think the easiest European languages to learn after Spanish is Italian or Portuguese or one of the other Spanish languages, like Catalan. I speak Valenciano, which reminds me pretty much of a mixture of mainly Spanish with some Latin & French thrown in. Greek is the hardest I have learned, on a par with Thai. Greek is difficult because of the grammar, Thai because it is a tonal language (the pitch of the word changes its meaning) & I'm not used to that. There are 5 tones in Thai: mid, low, falling, high & rising.

FYI, Gems are not "useless" if you are on the free version. If I make 5 mistakes in a day, I have to wait hours before being able to continue (or do practice lessons to earn a gem) OR I can "buy" Hearts with gems(if I have enough).

I'm at the point where I'm seriously considering buying the full subscription. I have a lot of down time at work where I could be doing it, but I run out of hearts. I also look up stuff to avoid losing hearts and I think I would learn more if I was prepared to make mistakes,
also they help with getting XP if you use them to legendary levels!! i go back and legendary everything just for the extra xp

13:30 That's me. I'm on a 900+ day streak on Duolingo Spanish, but most of the time I just do one of the listen or speak lessons at like 10:30PM because I forgot to do a lesson earlier.
What I've done that has helped me a lot is trying to do one lesson in the morning and one in the afternoon for the double XP chests. That way, I'm incentivized to spend twice as much time on the app and it's twice as hard to forget to do a lesson.

I did 500 days of Norwegian on Duolingo. Went to Norway and realised I wasn't able to understand what people were saying. I can watch Norwegian shows subtitled and understand but conversational is useless from Duolingo. You need face to face.
Interesting! Their Norwegian tree is not very fleshed out compared to their biggest 5 tho so yeah. That’d be missing loads
@evan btw, Norwegian is an epic language for English speakers to learn because of the amount of oh wow surprises. I loved it. Just slightly pointless for me because most Norwegians speak better English than me anyway.
A few years ago, I was learning Swedish with Duolingo (and a Native speaker at work). I actually learned more about the history of English than Swedish. So MANY words sounds the same as English, even if they are spelled different. Then I tried Norwegian and it was even closer to English. I knew they were similar but 🤯.
Also, whoever was doing the Norwegian sentences had a great sense of humor. One was a quote from the Princess Bride, another about Princess Leia having hair that looked like cinnamon buns. 😂

I really enjoyed this one! I'm on day 1220 of Duolingo Japanese. I'm certainly not fluent, but boy is it awesome to be able to make my thoughts understood even if only in short, incomplete sentences. For me, Duolingo is all about establishing a presence of that language in my daily life, and I'm grateful for it.
Im on 51 days on Spanish. I could probably get by asking for basic directions & ordering food on our trip to Mexico in March. I swear Ive learned more in 51 days than my entire grade 11 year.

@@Rabellaka.It’s easier to type Japanese with the romaji keyboard so you say “kakkoiisenseidesu” and it would translate to “かっこいいせんせいです“
Spanish and German have so many more options than, let's say, Greek.
@Rabellaka. One thing that I didn't understand at first was how to make the small sized characters っ instead of つ, for example. You just press "x" and then type the character.

I learned Spanish as a second language, and then German, and when I was volunteering somewhere and talking with someone from Central America, I learned that I have apparently developed a German accent in Spanish and was asked if I was from Berlin. I was surprised and had to say no, I am from the United States. I am happy to report that I finished the German Duolingo tree, and I am now focused on using outside resources to get to B2. Learning a language is really fun and I am glad you have had a lot of success in Spanish Evan!

My daughter’s using Duolingo in school for Spanish, though she started with Norwegian for fun. I did some Norsk, too, but I haven’t practiced it in a long time. (I was under the delusion that I could juggle 4-5 languages at once but I have since fallen off. I’ve discovered that I don’t remember as much French as I thought I would.)
I’m in Unit 25 or 26 in Spanish after 2 years but I got to skip a bunch of the beginner lessons. I needed a refresher since I don’t speak it regularly. My vocabulary has improved & i’m remembering what I learned in high school a millennia ago! I still have trouble understanding the characters like Zari who speak really fast because I’m hard of hearing. Even with hearing aids, I miss things. I still get stage fright when asked to speak in Spanish but I think I could get by.
I just hit the one year mark for my streak. My top 3 languages I alternate between are Italian, Norwegian, and Swedish. I am also hard of hearing and struggle with some of the words. Especially when they speak fast. I tend to mess up on some of them because I can’t make out the word clearly.

Hit day 300 in German yesterday. I've been through periods of feeling like it's a waste of time but then realised (like you said) days where you only maintain your streak aren't really helping. I spent a few days in Berlin around day 90 and honestly being able to ask for stuff in a bakery then understand and answer a couple simple questions made it all worthwhile and hugely motivating. I'm in this for real now!
I keep reminding myself years ago I tried to get a haircut in Göttingen, got inside the door realising I had no clue and all I could say was ich möchte der bzzzzz with appropriate mime ;)

your spanish is really good! you definitely have a foreign (american/english) accent, but your pronunciation is very clear and not very difficult to understand you at all, specially when you talk slowly. congratz on your hard work!

What I’ve loved about Duolingo is that it feels pretty effortless.. like I CAN just take a few minutes and mindlessly do the thing… and now im picking up bits of French in music and at the airport! It ingrains it so it you don’t have to think so much about the words and you can just get used to the patterns more intuitively!
Evan, your story reminded me and my mum of the time we were on holiday in Italy and they gave us a French menu at dinner by mistake. My parents worked most of it out with what they could remember from GCSE (I hadn't learned any French by that point) and when the waiter came, he confirmed our orders in German! It all worked out in the end though :)
This is the first video i watch without subtitules and understand almost everything what you saying. Im far away to be fluent on english as I wish, but the big proyects are made of small steps so we have to be proud of our progress. Im glad you want to learn two others languages, in my case these are english and french :)
I love your Duolingo videos. For me, whenever a new one comes out, it's always sort of like a little event. Like "oh what does he have to say about it now?" And it's always so interesting and motivating. Sometimes people are too harsh on Duo, but I've learned SO MUCH since I started using it about four years ago. It doesn't work for everyone and that is completly fine. It works for me and I really enjoy it. I'm very prou of how far i've come with my english and french leassons. I've had my ups and downs like those weeks you mentioned, but I always come back.
And slowly but surely, my dream of becoming a polyglot gets closer. I also listen to music and watch some videos here and there. But the majority of my french comes from Duo. Everyone has their own journey that changes and adapts, I'm enjoying mine so far.
Ps: Atomic Habits (15:17) is a great book that changed my life. I highly recomend it.

I studied Spanish in high school (which is several decades ago), and have found Duolingo to be a great way to practice at my A2-B1 level, and you seem pretty solid at B2. Similarly, I just finished another course in it (Scottish Gaelic) and found that it's not really sufficient to have a conversation about anything other than the basics, or even read mass-media news (BBC Alba, though I can usually muddle through an article with the help of Am Faclair Beag, the online Gaelic-English dictionary), so I'm probably an A1 after about 2 years. So Duolingo's effectiveness is variable, depending on what language you are trying to learn. Major ones -- Spanish, German, Italian, French -- all seem to be pretty good. Minor ones -- Gaelic, Welsh, Irish, Romanian --- are more of a taster, to get you into the idea of learning more independently.
If you want to really learn Welsh try out 'Say Something in Welsh.' I am a native Irish speaker, by the way, and their Irish course is awful. I wish they had human beings doing the voices instead of... Whatever they went with.
@@blindknitterthat's one good thing about the Scottish Gaelic course - Duolingo worked with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the preeminent institution for Scottish Gaelic in the world. All the voices are recorded, varying from one of the course designer's grandmothers, to Joy Dunlop (a singer and Gaelic television presenter). I thought about trying the Irish course after finishing Gaelic, as the grammar is similar and there's a lot of cognates, but decided to go back to Spanish to brush up.

And yes, I know a few words in German too, from a class I took years ago as a college freshman. I think I got a 'D'. Had little interest, but now (at 72), I'm amazed at how much German I still know! It’s not really about the number of days though, it’s about the number of hours. 15 minutes a day for 2000 days is only 500 total hours. Cambridge (the publisher) estimate 100 to 200 hours of dedicated study with a teacher to go up a level. So 500 hours should have you in the B1 class.
@@joepiekl One thing worth a note, I'll say their hour estimates for C1 and C2 are really, really optimistic. If you get to a C2 in 1000 hours in a non-closely related language, you're a very, VERY talented language learner.
But yeah, hours of study are a better measure than chronological time.

@@tomrogue13Well, Spanish is one of the most closely related languages to English (Via Rome and the French), and the Slavic languages (I.e. Polish, Russian, etc), are as different as can be, despite coming from the same original source, Proto-IndoEuropean. I don’t mean to diminish anyone and their journey, but I am inclined to agree that if one did not have this level, almost bare minimum, after a half-decade + of daily usage, I would be very concerned. Coming from an English native who learned Spanish in the US.
Edit: I must add however, it is incredibly impressive to become intermediately fluent in a third language, with Duolingo alone.
I’ve only been doing Duolingo for like 6 months and my ability to converse in basic Spanish with people in my area has absolutely improved. It’s actually been really awesome to be able to talk to people with limited English, whether it’s with restaurant staff, a random lady at the park asking me where I bought something, or meeting someone from Facebook marketplace to sell something (all real examples)

After 690 days on Duolingo my understanding of spanish is aprx B1, but I also listen to podcasts on youtube, watch films etc. Struggle to speak though.
It's a lot easier to see or hear a word and recognize it than it is to pull the word out of the dark recesses of your brain.

33 days into Norwegian! Yeah, it's a weird one to pick, but my Mom came from there and I grew up hearing the language around my grandparents and visiting Norwegian relatives. I've always wanted to try it, and now I have the time.
Im three sections into Norwegian... I have ZERO verbal comprehension. I'd suggest another resource for Norwegian as well.
@@CD3MC Oh, I'm going to -- I'm on Section 2 Unit 5, and I figure I'm going to get through the 40 units in this section and then start with online tutoring/conversation, or maybe a full course with a live teacher. I'm pretty sure my pronounciation is crap.
One thing I really don't like about Duolingo is the scattergun way they present grammar and rules -- you're supposed to 'pick it up'. but I'd really like to have a clear explanation of the differences between prepositional pronouns, for example.

@@jrochest4642 Same, I learned a bit of Spanish with Busuu and I really liked how up front they were with the grammar there. On Duolingo I learned way more about Norwegian grammar from just googling thinks that confused me (like hennes vs sin). I'm currently in section 2 too, but currently try to transition to watching/listening to a lot of Norwegian content (mostly NRK) which Duolingo actually helped me with. I originally started learning Norwegian over a year ago from a book, but it's really an unfortunate way to pick up on pronunciation and get a feel for the language. So Duolingo really helped me revive the knowledge I had lost after pausing learning the language and helped me to better understand Norwegian spoken content. But it is lacking and I think I'll go back to my book for vocab and grammar, as well as the many videos on youtube available to learn Norwegian. A real course would be the best thing obviously, but I don't have the time and money. However there is a group of scandinavian language learners at my uni that just meet each other to talk so I'll try to find the time for that.
I just recently started to think in Norwegian "by accident" without having to force myself to, but that's mostly because I spend so many hours listening to Norwegian
I think Duolingo is a good way to revive a language you 'forgot', when you're being lazy, but you really shouldn't limit yourself to it.
And I also think I really need to work on my pronunciation, but what kinda helped me realise my shortcomings is to speak a sentence instead of writing it down, when you get a little microphone in a text field. Because that actually doesn't just say you're correct on what ever sentence you're supposed to pronounce, but chooses the words you're most similar too, which made me realise I really need to work on my 'r's to distinguish certain words. And it also forces you to translate more difficult sentences on the fly and speak them instead of just reading an already translated sentence or repeating a sentence already said aloud

I started Japanese on duolingo earlier this year, I am studying Japanese for years already and I also have classes, but I thought it would be a good little practice to add to my japanese learning journey

I knew completing Duolingo German was worth it when we visited Köln and the locals didn't automatically flip to English when I spoke to them. I was also good enough to inspire my husband to learn French for our next holiday to France 🥳

@kingdra-winston3500 Yes, definitely worth doing. I'm a big advocate for Duolingo. The German course takes you to B1 which is more than adequate for travelling.
I also use the many resources on UA-cam like Easy German and I would say you need to do this to progress to reading books in the language or work in the country. They also give you good listening practice which is required for language learning.
There are now some useful grammar tips within each Duolingo unit which didn't used to be there. I'm not too hung up about the grammar, but my husband has bought himself a basic French grammar book to go alongside his learning.
I would also say to keep going on unit 1. It seems boring and irrelevant, but beyond that, you start learning the useful stuff.

Pro tip for anyone trying to learn a new language, follow UA-camrs that speak that language and watch their videos.
I can passably speak Spanish with my Latino friends, and my opinion is that Duolingo isn’t going to teach you how to speak very well (it takes practice), and it probably will not help you with grammar, but it WILL help you stay active with the language and increase your vocabulary. I recommend it alongside having conversations and practicing

Tiny nerdy detail: I’m still in section 3 and do have these lesson types. But one difference I noticed is for me the “podcast” host speaks in English and only the callers are in the language I’m learning. So that’s one way it’ll get more difficult on later sections.

Hola Evan. No sé si algún día leas mi comentario (o algún anglosajón seguidor de este contenido) pero cómo un Colombiano (y por ende nativo del español) me sorprende muy gratamente, ver cómo hay cada vez más y más gente interesada en hablar nuestro idioma.
A veces aprender idiomas puede ser complicado; me sucede con el inglés (caso contrario jaja) pero vamos que se puede.
Pd. si se nota que Duolingo te ha enseñado bien. Hablas bastante fluido y se te entiende al instante
Just heading towards 1000 days in Swedish, I've been at the daily refresh end of the course for a couple of months now and really hoping they might add some of those podcast or story lessons in somewhere. I feel like I'm at a much lower conversational level than I should be after 2+ years of consistent practise; I can understand pretty much any text or speech at this point but I really have issues with complex sentences when talking myself.
I've been watching a number of swedish speaking youtubers and watching shows and movies to take my understanding that extra step towards slang usage and cultural understanding but I'm really finding it hard to practise my speech.
Guess its time to bite the bullet and just go spend some time in Sweden, I really want to try living there for a while to see if it clicks with me but don't want to take that plunge without feeling confident in my ability to communicate clearly.
If you’re on the refresh then yeah it might be better to move on to a resource that continues you on your journey (with some immersion for good measure)
Few tips for you: really keep talking in Swedish in Sweden. They may talk to you in english (faster and they basically speak english at a good level) but keep answering in swedish.
Also, thats just something we all struggle with. I'm taking real life classes and apart from the fact i'm learning swedish, i don't feel like speaking swedish and still find myself using really basic sentences. Maybe if you learn the grammar structure you'll get better in longer sentences but thats kind of usual anyway
If it’s within your means, I’d highly recommend finding a tutor. I’m living in France at the moment and in the year before I came here, I had weekly lessons with a tutor from italki. Being here surrounded by the language has been the absolute best way to progress in the language, but having a tutor really helped prepare me for my arrival!
They've recently made it so you can only do a lesson to earn hearts when you've completely run out of hearts and I absolutely hate it. Sometimes I just want an easier lesson to recap knowledge I already have, especially when I'm not feeling focused enough to learn a ton of new words.
The only way I can do that now is to purposely make five mistakes??
Does it let you do multiple lessons to get back up to five, or just one lesson, which is basically useless? Mine has stopped letting me earn hearts recently too and I’m at a loss about what is going on.

I do Duolingo and get speaking practice from my mom who is fluent in Spanish. She corrects me when I get something wrong. I wish she taught me Spanish when I was little but I’m making up for it now.
I started using Duolingo in 2014 and between 2014 and 2019 I've studied english, then even in 2019 I've started learning German, and since last year i started with japonese, Chinese, Korean and dutch, and some years i have been gifted by the app with the Plus Subscription, and i Hear many podcasts, in english, german, Dutch and Italian , and also read newspapers, books and News, And also watch Videos and series in these languages, I am Brazilian and while iwas writing this comment i was thinking in german

I’m attempting to learn Ukrainian on Duolingo. I learned Spanish in highschool so it’s kind of nice to have that knowledge because now I know what kinds of things to be looking for when learning like conjugations and tenses and the like which Duo has yet to teach me
