First Time Fishing with a REBEL Crickhopper! Cricket Fishing Lure

- This is my first time fishing with a Rebel Crickhopper! This is a cricket fishing lure that catches bass and panfish. It is shaped like a cricket or grasshopper, but it behaves like a crankbait. While it was a little tricky getting started, I did eventually get it under control. The first fish I catch is a largemouth bass somewhere over 1/2 lb. After that I catch some very nice bluegill on the 8-9 inch range. I even catch a smaller aggressive bluegill. One thing about this lure is, its hard to hook fish. This is probably because the hooks are so small. If you haven't fished with a Rebel Cricket Lure, you might also catch bass and bluegill your first time fishing with one.

those things are literally the most CLASSIC lure in the history of fishing.....that's why we love #Realistic
I had the same issue with hookups on the crickhopper. Now I only use it on an ultralight rod with 4lb floroclear and the hookup greatly increased. Thanks for another great episode! KIR
Maybe just replace the stock trebles with larger ones? Ive done that a lot with saltwater lures. Usually can get better quality hooks anyway. Might affect how it swims though, so check that out.
The Crickhopper was one of my favorite baits for a long time for panfish! Even tho it’s a crank, and even tho there is a popper version, I used it as both a crankbait and a popper and killed it with the bluegill and sunfish!
This is one of my "truckbox" lures. It always catches something. I always reel quick for a fast dive then let it surface. Usually gets smoked wiggling on the surface.
That is one of my favorite lures. I use it on my UL 4 to 6 lb mono. And you’re right, got to retrieve it slow.
The crickhopper has almost always been a BG killer for me. Especially in late summer. Welcome to the club.
I love to use micro lures on a ultralight rod and reel with 6 pound test line. I have better luck casting small lures sometimes.Great video Bud and I really enjoy.
Try stopping the retrieve for a few seconds, usually they will come back and hit it again.Tight lines bro 😎!
Came here to say the same thing. One of my favorite lures. I always reel slow and then stop and let it float up to the top. You get so many strikes that way.
I've found rigging a few split shots half a foot up from lure helps with cast distance and greatly reduces line tangles from the hooks
One of the best lure I've ever fished with it.
I’ve caught some very nice smallmouth on the yellow popper version. Cool early mornings produce the best results. Tossing it under over hanging branches especially where it’s deep. Great fun.
Nice video. I enjoy the simplicity of your videos. Would like to see you team up with John from CFA for a video.
He never gave me the time of day... too bad.
That's what fishing is all about, nice surprises! That was a good grip on the tackle box!! 👍
Love the rebel lures! Have so much fun with them, especially creek fishing. The bumblebugs are my favorite.
I've seen it and always thought about picking one up I might even give it a try now
You paid big fish, Congratulations your fishing equipment is fantastic, you are an excellent professional fisherman.👍🎣🐟
I used to use the crick hopper and the rebel crawfish crank all the time. I would crush panfish and small bass! Just have to take your time reeling them back in and let the fish set the hook on those tiny trebles.
These work amazing on slow portions of small rivers/creeks. My local river isn't deep whatsoever, but there's a particular portion with trees/shade all over with slow moving water that's about 4 feet deep. One of these crickets/grasshoppers will absolutely destroy bluegills/sunfish, rock bass, smallies, largemouth, and the occasional trout. I've even had chubs go after them. I just cast it near an overhanging tree and let it sit in the shade while twitching it super slowly and then occasionally reeling in. Great, great lure. Trebles are a little eh, but any bigger and the action of it would be all over the place.
I love my Rebel Crickhopper! I have used it for a couple of years, mostly in the spring. I catch a lot of Bluegills and Crappie, Bass are once in a while when I use it. Great job!
Always liked my crickhoppers, though I tend to remove either the front or back treble. I just tend to get tangled with one or the other or each other. I prefer to fish without trebles anyway though, so I'm usually exchanging hooks on my hardbaits anyhow.
Did anyone else get HYPED up at 4:31 ?
you were slaying those panfish!
Ouchie story! For my 5th birthday we went to the lake and had a cookout. I’m a fisherman for life so I brought my pole. Someone gave me this exact lure as a gift! I tied it on and caught a small bass then it was time to go. I went to hook it to the eye of my pole and stepped off a log at the same time...hook went straight into my left ring finger...deep all the way. Straight to emergency room...ate some Funyans in the car and salt burned so bad lol. Good times...I’m now 32
Great job! Really been liking the crickhopper lately myself. The fish in my local waters hit it differently depending on their mood. Sometimes they smash it when it's moving. Then last trip I had to swim it a little then stop and let it float to the surface. They would hit it when it sat. Great job!
Boy that was two nice bluegills coming on that grasshopper great job keep it realistic ☺️
I enjoy that cricket hopper lure, I caught nice panfish with them, green sunfish love em.
An excellent example showing the difference between fishing and angling. Being patient, adjusting to the way the bait behaves, line changes and most of all enjoying the day, a very good one my fellow angler friend.
Try the yellow one. I seen aBill Dance tv show and he was using a yellow one to catch monster blue gills. I got me one and caught a small bass and hooked a monster bass that run under a log and broke me off. Great video Alex.
The rebel crickhopper is one of the best multi species lure ever
It is a very underappreciated lure. A crickhopper and a beetle spin are always tied on in my boat somewhere.
@@daddyosink4413 yeah I agree you can’t beat those two
Thank you. I'm ordering the cricket hopper today!
Dude, that an awesome lure, I use it all the time, Bluegill love em. I once caught two Bluegill the size of my hand at the same time, one on each hook, will probably never happen again, they smashed it, nice catches, that lure is a keeper!
Bluegills love crickets! Once in a while I can find them live at bait shops so it makes sense they'll eat an artificial.
that first bass is nice! still watching! Good job on the hopper! Eazy breezy cover girl. LOL
Crickhopper is a great creek lure. Always keep your needlenose/forceps in your pocket when fishing one. They have also been around long enough that you can find off brand versions, bass pro and ozark trail both have a version now, and save a buck or two.
I appreciate your videos where you try lures and baits I’ve often turned my nose up at or just been reluctant to spend the money on and try. Love the channel!
My wife and I have a variety of Rebel lures...we have caught Bluegill, Bass and crappie with them... they catch most anything.
The crickhopper is one of my favorites, the bumble bug is great to.
I actually use this bait as a top water and fish it slow on to and the walking action is incredible, caught multiple 1.5 bass on this lure and a bunch of decent size Bluegills
That’s how I use mine mostly top water let it float, reel in let it float. Makes it look like a struggling cricket trying to get back to land
I experimented with a few retrieves but got the most action on slow reel, pause.
Nice fish👍. Been using those crickhoppers since the 90’s. They really shine on ultra-night rigs. They’re really good worked on the surface too when conditions are right. Great vid!!!
Upsize to size #12 hooks in Matzo or Owner. The hooks on the bait are soft and often break, also. They are available Amazon or eBay. You want ones that longer shanked and somewhat oversized with nasty sharp points. I have been using that bait for years on a steady retrieve. It is essentially a grasshopper version of their crawfish. Lighter line is usually better but knotting to that braid will probably do it. Don't let this bait fool you. Large bass will hit this. Gotta play them somewhat lightly even with the upsized hooks. This is the time of year for that bait. The yellow color in the smaller size is lights out a killer.
I was thinking of trying those single hook replacements
Nice. I have used the same lure in creeks. It works great. Keep it Realistic
Great video Alex - I have with the REBEL Crickhopper and the Rebel Bug (fly) The hooks are small - I replaced the back hook with a bigger treble hook and I was able to catch more fish and it did not compromise the action on the lure. nice catches
It's great as a popper. I catch a lot of small bass and big sunfish in my local creeks fishing it on the surface.
All of those little Rebel lures are deadly in the creek!
This is my favorite fishing lure. I have caught trout, pike, bluegill, and bass on this.
Rebel is one of my favorite lure companies, but the wee craw is my go to
keep up the grind! I love the videos and the realistic fisherman spirit. keep it realistic!
Classic lure - love em and collect em
one of my all time favorites ... i have the green and the yellow . killer around a grassy edge...
You can let it float and reel really slow. It will tail wag on top, small mouth in the river love it.
I use these and strike king bitsy minnows to great effect on bluegills in small creek beds where roadrunner jigs may get hung on underwater tree roots 👌
I've found it to be the one and only lure that bluegill will smack year round no matter what
Thanks for the video, Alex. I saw the Crickhopper on one of those UNrealistic channels and was curious but skeptical. I can believe what I see on Realistic Fishing.
I see you've discovered the mystery of the crickhopper!!! Catches bass but will also tempt those beefy panfish too. But can def be a pain to hook up consistently. My best luck was always just a steady retrieve, even slower if your pulling upstream. Awesome catches homie!!!! The Bullgills wanted that cricket lol
Out here is AZ I grew up fishing the yellow and brown Rebel Crickhoppers for rainbow trout, and they work like magic! Bass out here seem to love them, too.
Definitely one of my favorite lures!
Glad to know this thing slays. Gonna be a great lure for microfishing!
Perfect time of year for it, too. Especially in farm ponds surrounded by tall grass with big grasshoppers.Use it as a popper and they can't resist it.
That lure looks really good. Keeper. On a side note u should plan to come to chicago for the perch run. Your dropshot rig is all u need.
I haven't fished a crikhopper since I was a kid! Those are great lures though. I used to use them in the high country of Colorado in tiny mountain lakes and streams for trout! They did really well. I also caught a 10.5in bluegill on one. 20 years of fishing later and that's still my PB bluegill
Nice video, I learned a lot with this one. I have a lure like that one never used it didn't think it would work. Thanks for this I learned a lot.
Glad you enjoyed it
One of my favorite mini cranks is the rebel ant. I have had great results with the bright red colored one.
That is an excellent lure!! Caught some BIG bluegill!!!
I caught a big creek bass today on one of those. Wish I could post a picture
I love the rebel crayfish crankbait, nice tight wobble
This is also a great lure, like the bitsy minnow, it used to be my go to every day, you are right slow, t is a reaction bait for some fish, but catches bass when you crank it down, it fishes best in the spring and summer, close to the bank, but doesn’t cast near as well as the bitsy minnow, once to get a bitsy minnow adjusted it’s awesome, this lure is great too!
I haven’t used a cricket lure but I’ll sure pick one up and try it. Thanks for the video. KiR!!!
The crickhopper in firetiger is one of my go to baits. I catch a lot of fish letting it float on top, twitch a couple times then pause. Biggest fish so far was a 3 pound bass, super exciting fight on my ultralight.
You may not not believe this but I found one on a tree change lures tied it on caught a small mouth never stopped using it great lure !!!!!!
That and the little rebel craws are always fun to use
Man that first gill was a nice one! Thanks for videos.
Have had some luck on the Rebel mini cranks over the years. Some decent baits. I recently got the mini craw imitation.
Is it a fish catcher ?
Picked up the Cricket-hopper cheap in Walmart a year ago and never used it. Now I will! Thanks for making this video.
Interesting lure. Seems to be getting more and more creative all the time. Just saw a Texas Rigged dragonfly at a lake with lots of dragon flies.
And that bluegill was huge!
Even though the bite slowed down, it looked like you had great time!
I have one cricket that is so old it's faded from so much use (around 40 years or more) it was my Dads, I have some newer crickets and the craws along with some of the minnows that are fun in the river's and creeks around me.
I love walking the rebel crickhopper on top of the water
Nice good size bluegills. Way to make it work
You did really good with that Bait! 👏👏👏
My experience with small diameter braid tied directly to the lure is the line tends to get caught up in the treble hooks. Also, I think you should take up I_fish on the perch fishing. I think it would be entertaining to see both of you fishing together.
Easy Breezy Beautiful…
Well done
I've used the small rebel crawfish lure and it works! Especially during prespawn season. I upgraded to bigger hooks. Those small hooks kept loosing me fish
Looks super fun! Nice video.
i swear by the crickhopper for bass trout and small streams. you get a lot of bluegill and other smaller mouth panfish nipping at it and sometimes they dont get hooked.
This is crazy, I was just going through my tackle tonight and bam here is this video, I almost threw this same lure away, god knows how long I have had it, I dont remember buying it, but I kept its and am going to try it for sure lol cool video!
Up size the hooks to a number six hook. They also have a big creek hopper that has bigger hooks if I'm not mistaken. The rebel teenie wee r is a pretty good bait its 1/8 th oz an is a lil bigger then the strike king pond minnow.
I use mine on an ultralight, slower action and more casting distance leads to more hookups. Its easy to rip those little hooks out of the fish's mouth even with a medium light ive found
I find I have to replace the treble hooks on lots of different lures. However, sometimes larger trebles adversity affect the lure's action. 🎣🚣♀️👵🤠
For a light lure it seems to cast quite well. I'm left wondering if the bass see it as a cricket trying to imitate a minnow or a minnow trying to be a cricket. I guess it doesn't matter as long as they hit it.
Fish on!
I get my biggest bluegill on 1 inch crankbaits. You will get lots of hit from smaller fish that hit the body of the bait with out hitting the hooks. You can switch the hooks out if you feel like experimenting but it tends to be a bath that the fish need to hit it in just the rite way to be hooded
Putting in work! I've only used those in creeks.. but that Gill was a total unit!
You are on point about bait presentation
I am a big creek guy but the rebel crawdad works well for me. I haven't tryed the deep hopper. In high water the cricket hopper sometimes works.
Hell of a bluegill thrasher!…👌🏾
I have this lure, and the interest I have seen from the bass is very good
Love the lure, maybe its just me but I was laughing my ass off at the Covergirl comment 🤣
you should check out an ultralight rod, my personal favorite is the fiberglass cabelas brand ones especially the 7 foot+ ones. perfect for casting those obnoxiously light lures. I can even cast a swedish pimple - it's an absolute weapon in creeks.
Fun lure !! The crickhopper and the Strikeking bitsy minnow seem to attract the biggest bluegill and nice bass too . I agree with others that best on a ultralight setup wit 4 or 6 lb max test. Great show as usual !!!
Nice covergill!
Usually roll with Rooster Tails and Mini Kings, but I really want to catch something with this. I know I will soon based on what happened yesterday. Had 3 panfish make a pass at it but no hook set. They were fairly aggressive strikes so it seems this lure can be hit-and-miss as far as actual hookups go.
The lure has pretty sweet action though. I found them to be striking on the pause, as it was just sitting there under a tree. One came up and hit it with a pretty cool splash and then he stopped. Weird. I'm going to try it in some creeks and streams because I know that the fish prefer flashy stuff at the small lake I was at yesterday.
I was using the fire tiger one on an Ugly Stick GX2 ultralight with 4lb. mono. I found the lure is really, really light though. May try a split shot next time as the casting distance left a lot to be desired.
Pretty cool 🦗 🎣. Thumbs up! 👨👩👦👦🙌
been on the fence about it. looks like I will grab one and give it a go
