Hi Jim, great video and excellent guidance. Today I replaced my 2018 rav4 power lift gate strut and they are pretty straight forward. I really appreciate it and please keep going with these videos 🎉
Could this also be the cause of the door not opening all the way up and also getting stuck and not wanting to close? My wife's has this issue although they don't sound noisy, but do have some play.
Yes indeed. If they aren't operating properly and opening all the way they should be replaced. Make sure that they are set to open all the way up though since that can be adjusted in the menu.
Hi Jim, Excellent replacement guide. I was wondering if there's any way to mitigate replacement by lubrication or servicing? The parts are just so darn expensive.
That they are. I looked at them and it doesn't appear that there is any way to do that. I also asked a Toyota tech that I know and he confirmed it too. I told my daughter to try and use the back seat more for little things vs opening up the hatch like she always did.
The Gen4 RAV4 is a great vehicle but most of the newer SUVs from all manufacturers have similar power hatch designs. Luckily this was a straight forward repair and my daughter is very happy to have it working as new again. If your uncle ever needs to replace them he can just follow along and do it himself to save a lot of money!
I think they are normally around $890, I think I mention it in the video, but I have a buddy that works for Toyota that save me almost $400. You can find good deals from dealers that sell on-line too.
I have same issue with my 2017 RAV4 SE Left side here in Canada is very expensive over $C2,000.00 plus HST, I decide just go with manual gas struts and decide also replaced brackets . My total cost 6 parts in total C$250.00
@@jimsgaragetoys If you are located in USA is much cheaper than here high taxes Canada , I try to ship form us online stores to Canada no shipping to Canada. Best price for power lifter is $US 315.00 compare to Canada $C1274.00 plus 13% taxes
@@hexen0076 Everything is more expensive in Canada. The cheapest options in the US are not OEM quality so use at your own risk. The OEM ones are more but should outlast the aftermarket options as I've had people tell me that they didn't last very long for them.
My Aunt 2017 RAV4 rear hatch only opens a little so I’m guessing this is the issue also. But like someone said if I switch the power switch to off on the hatch will I be able to open it manually? Thanks and great video.
I did change mines to the after market product it work very well no problems all electrical wiring was compatible
They will work and fit okay but I've heard they don't last nearly as long.

Thanks! I love it. It's my 89 Supercharged 5MT. I've owned it now for 22 years. 😍
@@jimsgaragetoys It’s rare to come across an ’89 supercharged with a 5-speed manual these days! I’ll definitely go back and watch your MR2 videos
@@m3yfield I appreciate it! It still has the original factory paint, interior, and front windshield. And everything works on it too! 😉😍🔥🔥🔥

how much did it cost you for the parts, thanks.

That's crazy! I was lucky that I got the parts new for a discount, while still expensive, it was a big savings for my daughter.

Hi.if you change back door setting in multifunction display (set it to "all off" ) it will be working maunal
The automatic functions won't work but the struts are still working to help open the door and hold it up in the open position!
