Insulate the attic for sure, heat rises and its cheap to do yourself, 200mm rolls are about €20 each, you can do it week by week as your budget allows, seai says 40% of heat is lost through the roof, so its well worth the investment.

The graphics you added over the video really helped to understand what you meant! I've a newer house and might try those trvs for our rads :)

Brilliant advice, as soon as I read the first issue of LoughIsle I got to work implementing some changes in my house. Installed TRVs on all my radiators, when I went to put a jacket on my cylinder it turned out I’d a small leak so I had to invest in a new insulated cylinder but I’m noticing a huge difference in my hot water already. Next up is the attic, I’ve a pallet of insulation to install! Should be fun😅

Loving your videos, just another key efficiency upgrade that many for get about, is fixing doors and windows to close properly, and adding draught excluders. One can also use burning lavender sticks or equivalent around windows and doors to determine if there are draughts. Great work!

I’ve a huge problem with my external kitchen door, it was planed down so it would close properly, but once the house was lived in and the door dried out, it shrunk and now I’ve gaps all around the door to fill, I can literally see outside🤦🏻‍♀️

@@lolly3242 a local handy man maybe able to fix that up for you with low cost. Not sure how nice of a door you have, but you could alternatively try adding/gluing light material to the sides of the door, then sand down and paint. E.g you could use dense insulation material. Easy to cut slivers with sharp long blade knife. Use epoxy to glue to door, sand to fit, maybe add epoxy coat over it before paint.

One tip for the TRV. Don’t place a TRV in the room where your thermostate is. Great tips!! 😊

As a Yorkshireman I have spent over 25 years trying to educate my Irish wife. We have TRVs throughout the house (except the hallway where the themostat lives). Downstairs they are set to meet our needs. Apart from the bathroom all the upstairs TRVs are set to 0. If someone comes to stay we will set the TRV in the room they are going to use at maybe 3, for a day or two before they arrive.

Don't run the central heating and the electric fire at the same time. It only ends up turning the central heating off. That way you use expensive electricity rather than cheap gas, unless you only have oil fired heating in which case you are living in the wrong location.
