A man had murdered his wife, and *of course* he thought the best lawyer to handle the case was himself. 🙄
He was cross-examining a forensic tech who happened to be blind and was there with her guide dog. When he approached the witness, the dog got up on its feet and started growling and snarling, in full sight and hearing of the jury. This was a fully-trained guide dog, mind you, but she saw a threat to her two-legs and a dog's a dog for a' that.
Ms Rule was of the opinion that that growl helped seal that guy's fate and the dog was a fine surprise witness for the prosecution.

@ Ded Kat Nicole Simpson's dog was an interesting puzzle piece in the OJ case. It was an Akita, and they can be quite fierce and loyal, therefore, good watchdogs. Yet the killer was allowed access to Nicole. I think this indicates OJ was the killer, because he was not deterred by the Akita, who trusted him. Also, so cool how the dog went for help, trying to lead strangers to the scene.

The writer, Dominck Dunne wrote a great piece on this case for Vanity Fair. The story heavily sides with the theory that Michael was the murderer of Martha Moaxley. One a side note, Dunne's daughter, Dominique, was a young actress who played the part of the eldest daughter in the film, Poltergeist. She had been strangled to death by an abusive boyfriend who was meted a light sentence. Since his daughter's death, Dunne made it a mission to pursue justice for those who no longr had a voice. Martha was just a couple of years younger than Dominique. I only say all of this because perhaps Dr. Grande would be interested in looking at Dominick, a prolific writer for Vanity Fair, who focussed mostly on deadly crimes amongst the wealthy and celebrated. He had his heyday in Hollywood in his younger days. Great analysis as usual Dr. Grande.

Martha didn't reject Tommy. She had a crush on him and engaged in some consensual intimacy with him the night she died. She rejected his younger brother Michael. The brothers had a fierce rivalry. Michael was the problem child, he could never live up to Tommy. This act was probably committed by a drunk, jealous, angry teenage Michael.

Those darn dogs!! A couple of points to add. I noticed you didn't say that the Skakels lived next door. That kinda adds to how easily it would be for the brothers to commit the crime. Also, the golf clubs were not a common brand. Apparently Ann had been an ardent golfer and these were very expensive golf clubs. Also, Mrs.Moxley hired Mark Furman to investigate and he wrote a book about the case. From everything I've read it seems like Michael was the culprit. He has had serious drug and alcohol problems thru the years and confessed to several different treatment centers groups about Martha. Maybe Martha's death ate away at him and he used drugs and alcohol to try and numb his demons. I don't think Tommy can be ruled out but it seems more likely it was Michael. The Skakels were an out of control family with wealth to throw a problems. Very, very sad case.

I think Rushton Skakel had a lot of influence back in the day but I think the Kennedy connection was not so much a factor in the end. cash, though the family had personal billing with me. Moving on, I'll always blame the Greenwich Police. They treated us fine merchants like dirt. Took a client to court for non-payment,
won, and they still didn't pay. Court told me to call the Sheriff. I did, and he told me: "You're a merchant, they're residents, You'll have to sue ME to serve them with papers!".

My Boston girlfriend took a winter job housesitting at Ethel's, called me 2 weeks later and said I'm outta here, the kids are animals !! Teenagers, they would arrive unannounced, drugged and drunk, trash the place and leave. SO interesting going down this rabbit hole. michael really went through hell at this "school" though, basically went through torture and was literally labeled the kid who murdered martha moxley (they'd make you wear signs as punishments). they would beat him up and make him wear a chicken suit because he wouldn't admit to the crime. he ended up telling a few people here the truth though, that "he'd get away with murder because he was a kennedy."

It seems unlikely that he would have ever been sent to a reformatory school. While at Sheppard Pratt he reputedly confessed all to a fellow in-patient. As an aside; Mark Fuhrman, as well as Dominick Dunne, have done 'deep dives' into this case, and both arrived at the same conclusion.

I come from a golfing family, and can't even imagine the sheer force it would take to snap a 6i. Or, you know, any club. Like, how the hell do you even do that? That is terrifying. And believe me I've seen some angry people on golf courses, clubs getting flung all over the place (golfing with teenage boys is fun lol). I have never once seen a club snap, not even the cheap ones that look like they're about to snap at any time. Just.....yikes.....that is almost superhuman levels of strength and evil in equal measure.

The exact same club was snapped like a twig when the case was looked at by an ex prosecutor who was wearing high heels & just put her foot on the club in the middle without much force at all. The Oxygen 3 part series covered the other people who were not interviewed at the time & is worth watching if the case intrigues you.

I think you’re right. The barking dog was, sadly, an incidental red herring. A dog barking on “mischief night” when kids are crawling all over a neighborhood. Tsk, tsk.
Michael had means, motive, opportunity and access to a *very specific* weapon, unlike the alleged two strangers to whom the brand-new tutor gave a ride. money and power.
She engaged in consensual kissing with Tommy that night. He reportedly went home and watched t.v. Michael got the shaft that night. Then he gave it to Martha. In the neck.
How’s that for Privileged Male privilege circa 1975?
I read a book on this, decades ago. I noted-perhaps I remember wrongly?-that the golf bag was said to have been kept inside the back door of the Skakels’ house.
Thanks, Dr. G., for another trip down the memory lane of my youth. It was a bad trip. 😉 But your voice relaxes, so 🙏 thank you much.

I grew up in southwest detroit but left there several yrs before devil's night began. Heard of it from friends still living in the area. Not much that happened in Detroit made it to the national news, probably due to PC sensibility. I still miss the old place and regret that my liberal leanings induced me, as a white person, to acquiesce to black desires that all whites could leave now, please

Mayor Colman Young was something else. I still remember the nightly local news being challenged by a reporter and his calling him “white boy” on camera. Made himself into a racist 2 year old in the blink of an eye. Then there’s the mayor kwame kilpatrick scandal that made National news, stealing from the board and citizens as the uj in politics. Racist as all get out as well.

Martha rejected Michael that night (just like his mother left him) after he knew she had been alone with Tommy. Michael was home way before 11pm because according to the Skakel sister she heard a loud argument in the mud room between Tommy and Michael as Martha left the house. Michael grabbed his trusty 6 iron to pursue Martha as she walked home. It was a crime of extreme violence against a girl who chose Tommy over him. Tommy knew his brother was guilty because he knew his brother. Mark Furhman’s book got retribution for Martha.

I agree with your analysis 100% This case has always bothered me. Marthas poor Mother tried and did keep this case in the public eye. She was devastated by the death of her daughter but if I remember correctly, Mrs. Moxley did not live to see Michael Skakel arrested for the murder. I saw Mrs. Moxley on a TV show and it just broke my heart. For years she fought for justice for Martha. I believe the fact that Michael was a cousin of the Kennedy's played a huge part in why he was not arrested till years later. And still, in the end, he was never convicted. If he had not been a Kennedy cousin it would have been an open and shut case from the beginning. Power and wealth do work in favor even when your guilty.
I enjoyed your analysis and agree that he was guilty but not beyond a reasonable doubt. We loose sight of the victims here. Martha and her Mother. Thank you Dr. Grande for your interesting analysis and for covering this case. 😪 RIP Martha and her Mother.
