I just got an R6 a few weeks ago. I'm super happy with it. It's a huge upgrade from my old 5d Mark III. I just got the 85mm F2 Macro in last night, which is my first RF lens. I played with it a little bit around the house and I'm already excited. I'm excited about my next wedding already!

I agree! Large files are not allways necessary or better. I am an older photografer, so I have learned to take the picture right from te first time (usually). I do not have to crop very often.

I have the R6 too and it is the camera that I need. Had the m50 and it was a good starter camera, but the R6 make it look like a toy. Like you, I bought a second lens (RF 35mm) with the money I saved and it was a good decision since I do a range of photos from closeup food photography to far out architecture and landscape photography. Great video I stumbled upon because you are reviewing based on your personal experiences and not something other people said.

Had an A7III and still have M50 and just got the R6. Sold A7III and will now sell M50. M50 is like a toy, but great camera for money. Great social media camera.

I've used an M50 before and I think it might be the best "bang for your buck" camera that Canon makes. Certainly not on the level of an R6 though. That RF 35mm lens is amazing! It's great for food photography.

Great video, Dan, the workflow perspective has added several tips. I bought the R6 recently, with one RF lens (24-105mm f4L), and I've had a chance to compare it with my Sigma 24-105mm ART lens on the R6; I have no complaints with the Sigma, but the RF glass version is just better, particularly the corner sharpness difference when shooting wide open. I haven't had a chance to try out the video modes yet, but I think the ability to record 10 bit video with C-Log INTERNALLY is a very big deal, also from a workflow perspective - no need for an external recorder. Thanks for sharing this video.

A lot if great points here. I’ve been in the same dilemma. But honestly, I’m still shooting the mk1 6D which I’ve been stunned at what a workhorse it’s been. So many think you need the top, pro level gear for it to churn out the work, but not so. Occasionally I’d like to crop tighter and have more resolution but I’ve tended to shoot the tighter shot as well, therefore not needing to crop much.
Video is a big shift for me and I noticed getting caught up in the R5 capability but I’m coming from 1080 only, and if I need the R5 maybe I’ll add it to the bag as long as my business needs it, or perhaps one of the new, smaller Cine cameras that are due to be announced. Especially as it’s rumoured they’ll have the RF mount. So the money I save on the R6, I can pick up the RF 15-35, a focal length I don’t have much of, and use it for both stills, video and a Cine camera if/when I pick one up.
Anyway, thanks for your candid thoughts.
    Cheers 🍻

Great points! There are so many great cameras in Canon's line and I was fine with the gear I had, but man...after you use the autofocus system on these new cameras, there's really no going back. It's almost like using a camera for the first time in a weird way. Everything is different!

    • @JonathanThompsonStoryteller
      @JonathanThompsonStoryteller 4 роки тому +1

@@danvirchow Once you experience the witchcraft that is the new focus system I can see how you wouldn't want t go back. I tried an R5 today at the Canon Canada Roadtrip in Montreal. It's amazing at focusing. You're right, in some ways I feel I'm learning to use a camera again. Most importantly right now, I'm trying to get my footing after just arriving in Quebec. Looking for the stories to tell and some clients would be amazing. I'm also seeking out fellow photographers/filmmakers to bounce ideas around with and just hang out. I'll continue to work the gear I have for a wee while. Until I go back to my archaic focus system and a sensor that looks like a caveman drawings and cant take it any more 🤣🤪

Great video. This camera got me to switch back to Canon from Sony. I just sold my A7III and A7RIII to get the R6 (and I'll pick up a R3 or R1 when released). All that mediocre Sony glass is gone and I'm using the EF 24-70 2.8 and 15-35 2.8 for 90% of video and photo. The only downside is the H265 codec. I record to the Atomos Ninja V using Prores 422...much easier to edit and grade with no loss of color depth. I used to shoot 1DX MKII so I have EF glass already. Just waiting to see if the R1 is a mirrorless, higher MP 1DX MKIII!

I wanted the R5 and couldn’t find one, but got an R6 instead. Now that I have an R6, I see no reason to get an R5.
R5 downfalls are more money on cards 500 each, lot more memory for huge files, slower files to work with, hate the top mode electronic dial.
The R6 is just perfect. Files download fast, and the top mode dial is awesome.

Canon R5 defaults to 1/1 full power flashes consistently when TTL and HSS used at any shutter speed faster than 1/250 sec.
In addition, Bracketing of any kind is not successful-be it flash bracketing or AEB, as the Z cameras are able to do with flash.
    Gear tested:
    Canon R5
    Flashpoint PRO2 MK2 Trigger
    Flashpoint AD1200 PRO
    Flashpoint AD600 PRO TTL
    Flashpoint AD200.
    All gear on latest firmware.
