Canon R6: It's WAY Better Than You Thought

- We got the Canon R6 and R5 in for testing! Today we focus on the R6. How does it compare to the Fuji XT4? How is the 1080p? Will it overheat with the new firmware 1.1? How's the stabilization and autofocus? We got the giant RF 15-35mm f2.8, is this a good vlogging setup? Is full frame glory real?!
Thanks Camera Canada for the loaners! If you buy any of these through my affiliate links, canon will update the firmware and allow you 3 more minutes of jail time visits with your camera. Canadian links in the description, youtube won't let me post them in the comments. Just as a note, I had firmware 1.1 on the R6 and 1.05 on the lens, which I THOUGHT was the latest, but it's not lol. So that's probably why the IBIS was so bad, I have a video coming with the R5 also not on the latest lens firmware, but now it's up to date and all future vids will have it. We'll test the IBIS again with the new firmware.

Can’t wait

User error and we learned nothing! As usual! Keep up the great work
Jaeger Schtulmann they were clipping most likely because of user error. He has no nd filter on. And he’s honestly not the best color grader lol
All jokes aside, a good thing about your reviews is the neighborhood “walks & talks”. While a lot of reviewers do synthetic bench marks, and/or “...time to process my file...” bench marks, watching your “Walk & Talk” on a camera is a great real world review. Beauty ‘ eh!
Yeah, the walkabouts are surprisingly useful even though they are not specifically repeatable
camera conspiracies is the king of anecdotal evidence. But outin the field iis where we have to use the cameras.
Outside vistas and Kasey's crazy commentary are what still bringing me back to this channel. Sadly, the original idea of finding solutions for vlogging, seems to be lost. Nowadays he walks around with these cameras that cost thousands of dollars. I don't find that relatable anymore.
This is why i love this channel. He cares about 1080p for our vlogging needs. He also cares about other modes. Every channel that gets the hand on these cameras all just care about 4K. Your the best reviewer man. Thanks Camera Canada for helping him for these reviews as well.
So true . Every other reviewer not only didn’t do 1080 but none of the.m Did 4K 24 p either. . They all only did 4k30 and up with the highest bit rates and MBs with he intention of over heating it . This was the first ever day normal how ppl use the camera review
@@tobinfrost2517 Well what do we expect when youtubers out there just copying each other's style of review. Gerald Undone and Camera conspiracies is where i go for more comprehensive tests.
Navi Reljan I totally agree with you. But you can’t put both of these channels together in the same room... that’s a divorce court waiting to happen...
I am not a vlogger but I enjoy watching your videos when you are testing these different cameras and products. I am one of those " dreaded stills photographers" and watch your videos for the humor and insight on cameras. Bye the way I got 2 of your Camera Conspiracies shirts and they came very quickly from the time I ordered to when I received them. Looking forward to your next walk in the neighborhood.
I cranked up the music in the video. My neighbour yelled at me. "This isn't a discotheque. Go to bed!" It's 9 a.m.
Oh how I’ve waited for this Canon video series. I’m so excited. I’m sold on the Sony already but I’ve been holding out, patiently waiting, to see your review of these two. The fact that you have both the R5 and the R6 is a dream / nightmare come true.
You'll find that a variable ND will help greatly with vlogging, especially in the sun. You'll have a lot more options with shutter and Stop.
He doesnt like ND's
@@bigturn1051 I guess that's why this video was a motion blur overexposed disaster.
Dynamic range definitely behind competition
no zebra when shooting but it look clipping to me
It beat the XT4 in side by side....
It's not as good as the A7SIII but I'd stop short of saying that it's "definitely behind the competition". If they put CLog3 in there, as they're rumored to be working on, the difference will be even more negligible.
Jaeger Schtulmann it would clog 3 adds quite a bit dynamic range
@@jaegerschtulmann How many stops do you consider "substantial"
Brett the Behemoth last time I checked I’m pretty sure Gerald undone said clog 3 brings the dynamic range up to 13 stop instead of 11
No Cripple Hammer....? 26 minutes that I’ll never get back...
There was some skin sizzling though.
I was turned off from the R6 but this has me interested again. I do think you need to start using ND filters and shutter angles in your videos.... the high shutter speeds make it look so choppy.
This is exactly what I was thinking which makes it a bit unfair. Would probably look better with the correct(ish) shutter angle, not 1/4000
Edit: not unfair against other cameras but to itself. I would like if he used an VND to get as close as possible to correct shutter for most natural motion blur)
@@CarlBergsdorf well it is pretty fair since he does so with every camera
@@CarlBergsdorf How is it unfair if he doesn't use them on the other cameras either?
Arthur Sese in that case, yes its fair. Did not know
If he had the EF to RF variable ND adapter and used a Canon 16-35mm 2.8 lens he would have an outstanding setup. And pretty damn light too.
The skin looks really muted and bad on this camera at points. The light parts of your skin looked blue and that is not good (in the outdoor test). Daylight is warm colours in this season.
That HDR mode looked worst than an iPhone.
it looked like WB was a little cool ...see how blue the sky was
Keep in mind he's shooting a Canon camera and applying Fuji LUT.
@@cooloox The colours looked off whitout the Fuji Lut. They where unnatural and muted. It didn't look realistic. And the Dynamic was terrible
Id think it's the camera at this point with the right skill and not a lot of time you can make canon rebel color looks good too
It’s official I am now a fan of Camera Canada. Thank you guys for supporting This channel. I’ll be sure to purchase my next camera or lens through you guys.
Late to the party but thought I´d share my experience with the R6 after about a year. 1080p 120 fps sucks, unfortunately. There seems to be a lack of sharpness and detail, looks almost like 720p to me. The 4K however... oh wow. The 4K60 (I use it for slowing down nature photography) is so good it makes me drool :) I´ve never even been close to over heating but then again I rarely film more than 1 minute or 2 at a time. Low light performance is great, I´ve filmed night shots at ISO 51200 and it works for my purposes (Aurora and Milky Way night time videos). I would really like 4K120 (or a useable 1080p 120) but I can´t afford an R5 and the 4K60 on the R6 looks even better than the R5.
Okay letsgooooo! Nice vid! Glad to see some firmware improvements to make the R6 and R5 actually worth it’s weight!
I like you music choices, First time watching and I can say you sense of humor is on point! haha
It feels like most of the RF-glass love is from photographers, and maybe from youtubers that stick to exclusive studio use. I really appreciate how you describe the settings you use as you try out different modes.
As someone who got the R5 in the first shipment I’ve been eagerly waiting for these videos!
It was hilarious how you were anticipating the camera to overheat lol!
Also, no appearance by the Canon Cripple Hammer; the R6 must be doing something(s) right.
Dynamic range wasn't bad to be fair but the highlights in the sky were blown out in 4k (if I remember correctly).
Honest and hilarious content as always! 👏🏾
What I like to hear is that *Fuji XT-4* is becoming the go-to compare cam. Let's go Fuji!
Yeaaaa
You picked up that A7SIII and you immediately got a perfect image in FIRST video, and it feels like with R6 you aren't getting that instant magic (but, you always get way better with new cam by like third video).
Haha his image def wasn't perfect on the first video with the Sony IMO. It was definitely close to perfect by the last video though.
Be definitely doesn't trust this Canon. I guess he'll get used to it. He keeps expecting it to overheat.
@@RichardsWorld I don't trust canon cameras right now either :(
You need to update the lens firmware mate. the enhance IS mode is really good.
He said it was the updated firmware.
@@arthursese6068 he had updated the camera, but not the lens.
@@adhi_atma It'd be even worse if he did. Hopefully he does lol.
Spoiler alert, it's not better with new firmware.
@@cameraconspiracies I think I've read that the IBIS edge wobble gets better once you use the lens at 17mm or 18mm, not at its widest.
Also, please just show us Canon colours out of the camera, not with the Fuji LUT over it.
You deserved such respect from Canon man. You reviewing most controversial questions which about no one speaks about, thank for you work, keep it great! Make most impartial review on this two babies as you can!!!
Everyone’s talking about the IBIS wobbles but I don’t think it looks that bad..? 😅 especially when you zoom in a little it looks great. And the 1080 looked fine to me! But I personally don’t make videos, I just watch them and this was pleasing to watch imo.
Yeah I didn't notice the "wobbles" at all until he mentioned it and I had to look really closely to see them at all. It's still better than the Sony IBIS overall and has no crop or stutter jumps like the Sony.
No, its pretty good. It more than passable. The whole idea of blogging is that its not professional, it's not meant to be. Slight wobble or jumpiness is fine.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker if you are just Vlogging you don't need a camera in this price range.
Ordinary Filmmaker casey neistat made it work without ibis.
@@bemboing4338 The Eos R doesn't have IBIS, and the R6/R6 both have the same digital stabilization option that the R had, sooo...
That pigeon footage w/ monarch butterfly was epic (including the music)! Do more of that!
Really loves the jams in this one.
I dont want to hate but the focus breathing at 3:30 is next level.
I never understood why people like canon colors so much, especially those standard profiles have too much contrast and saturation, I would always use log and grade myself If I was using canon cameras.
I think the stabilization of the Sony A7S III was better.
To be fair, we never saw the Sony at anything wider than 20mm. The wobbles get bad at superwide angles. Also the enhanced stab on the R6 looked very smooth, albeit with a significant crop
yeah, it's weird, the image was pretty shaky here. In ever other test I've seen, the R5/R6 IBIS beats the A7SIII IBIS by a fair margin until you turn on the cropped IBIS on the Sony and then that would suffer from weird stutter jumps.
Here it almost looked like he had IBIS turned off.
@@otameal we saw the Sony with the Tamron 17 - 28 😉
Corner warp is yucky. Camera shake is more forgivable.
@@DiscoverThailand My bad you are correct
"Where's the primes at the wide end?"
YES.
That's a huge part of the advantage of mirrorless over SLRs too, you can make the wide lenses smaller and lighter but all Canon did was a 35mm f/1.8, that barely even counts as wide. I'm not sure what's holding them back, but it's the most frustrating thing about their whole mirrorless system. You can get EF primes, but they're bigger and heavier than the equivalent primes for Sony E mount.
Definitely frustrating, but as many people have said it is a new system and it looks like they are trying to get their bad ass stuff out first. I am certain they will follow up with some of their usual staples, eventually...
Because these cameras are still geared towards pro photographers. The video features are a plus
@@zaiENT1 By this point in the EF mount's existence there was already a 28mm f/2.8, a 24mm f/2.8 and a 15mm f/2.8 fisheye. They were gunning for the pro photographer market back then too.
@@RudolfWolph they would argue that you can use ef to rf adapters though, a pro photographer would be ok with that. A vlogger not so much.

The thing that no one talks about is how much internal sharpening canon and Nikon have. If you sharpened the hell out of the Fuji in post it may look more similar.
I'm so glad for Camera Canada getting all these cameras to you. Best real world reviewer. I waited for you to get these cameras as I was curious to see how the IBIS actually performs... turns out its not as great as all other youtubers claim it to be.
it strange...their was not so much Toneh but somehow you stand out against the background with a 3D pop i not see you have before...it look very good
Nice video, good to see more R6 content out there
Have you seen the info going around about Sony's gyro stabilization? It looks really impressive, only major downside is needing to shoot at high shutter speeds but that's never bothered you anyway. Available on ZV-1 and A7sIII
I think he mentioned something about this either last video or the one before. Too much of a waste of time stabilizing one video to be worth it. At least for vlogging purposes.
Love your videos man. Don't forget to switch the camera from the EFCS to the mechanical shutter for maximum Toneh!
This isn't bad but the stabilization is really weird. It's like revolving door
I like the Nikon autoexposure better.
It’s amazing how good those Canon Cameras are when they send you a free one!
It's amazing how good they are anyway.
One thing we can be sure about with Casey, whether sent a camera for free or not, he will be blatantly honest about it, whether good or bad.
That Opening Fuji Footage with the Samyang was out of focus. That is the problem with MF Lenses.
IBIS is wobbly, once your eyes see it, difficult to not keep seeing it.
Same with the R5 - especially if you are using it in conjunction with a stabilized lens. Like you over stabilized a shaky handled shot in FCPX
Is it just me, or is the motion pretty jerky in the 2nd half of this. Once I noticed it i could stop focusing on it.
1/1000th of a shutter, wideangle ibis jerk, 30 fps on a 24 fps timeline,
pretty meh rolling shutter(it uses the 1dx mark 3 sensor which for some reason can do full sensor 60 fps(16.6ms of rolling shutter) but if you set it to 30 fps/24 fps it has 33.3ms of rolling shutter, which is pretty bad)
There are some good footages you shot with the R6, this camera is good!
“That auto focus is snappy!” 😂😂 I love your reviews.
I'm ruling of thirds so hard right now.
This F/2.8 20mm combo looks really nice to me. Nice gradient in the blur. Not overdone just fine.👌

That doesn't work in the R6, only R5.
@@cameraconspiracies Sorry, my bad. Thought you were out with he R5... was commenting while watching.
Thats one of the major drawbacks about the R6. No real-deal shutter or aperture priority modes for video. The 80D is the same way. You have to go to a "5" level camera or the EOS R to get true shutter and/or apreture priority modes in video. Thats why it was so annoying that the R5 has overheating issues. But hopefully through firmware the R5 & R6 will get the added functionality they need.
@Kafala its Canon's method of segmenting their cameras. The Cripple Hammer 🔨 thrives to this day in the Canon Universe. 😆
But to clarify. Its not a huge problem. Its just a drawback. For locked off shots in studio or if your in a run and gun situation and you stop moving and have consistent light you can set your parameters via manual mode (which can in fact be bounced to C1-C3 position) and it will work just fine. But it is nice when you are moving to allow the camera to do most the work while you know your maintaining your desired parameter and the camera is adjusting the other two parts of the exposure triangle automatically.
Good to see you excited.
I AGREE KINDA EXPENSIVE FOR 1080P.
Man you’ re the best... i love your style. Ciao From Rome
"You're spraying poo with cologne", lmao that is a great way to put how Panasonic is addressing their shortcomings in AF on their newer camera's
It is worth pointing out that every single camera release has seen improvements to the DFD. When they first released it it didn't even work at all. Now It's almost as good as a bad phase detect system. And contrast detection does have a lot of advantages. It works in much lower lighting conditions, is more accurate, and in single point autofocus it's actually faster than phase detection. If they can work out the kinks in it there is the potential for it to vastly surpass phase detection autofocus. They just aren't there yet. If they do ever reach that point though they will have an exclusive autofocus system built on years of development, test designs, etc that functions unlike any other on the market and would take competition years to catch up to. In my opinion this is the direction that the Panasonic engineers are thinking to go. They obviously see an endgame in developing the DFD system or else they wouldn't have stuck to it for years. It's just a question of whether or not it ever delivers, but from their development rate it is obvious that the system is being improved with every subsequent camera.
Always great work man! Thanks for hustling!
Loving the John Woo cinema goodness with pigeons
Most annoying thing is that u cant save video settings to custom modes C1,2,3

I am returning mine. We shoot a lot of our lower end videos in 1080 60 for real estate and the "moire" is absolutely terrible around windows, blinds, and edges of furniture. The r5 does not have this problem or ALL of the cameras we have had previously. Disappointed.
Now since EOS R6 has got the clog3 update, this could have been the perfect camera if there was no overheating and had all-i ..
Canon still somewhat crippled it by not providing all-i

Yea 6 grand for an aps-c camera with kit lens.
That sounds like way too much of a compromise for a nearly $4000 camera. Especially when you don't have to make compromises like that with the a7sIII. Which is $300 less than the r5
@@cameraconspiracies Still beats $5500 for the A7SIII which has 2007 photo tech.
What you're describing is not a reasonable compromise.
Camera Conspiracies you are always comparing the Xt4 with any camera and the APSC beat everyone and you keep thinking that the sensor size matters? Is 5k oversample to 4k sensor size not matters for that situation. Of course the camera have other functions that work in full frame for other situations but full frame for vlogging is not a good choice, that doesnt mean that you use that camera in crop mode for everything but for vloging make sense. Have oversample 5k without overheat, IBIS, lens stab, and a wide shot is not that the perfect camera that you are looking for?

8:00 focus jumps to the trees! Fuji ninjas hiding in there? How would a Canon camera know?
With these massive mirrorless camera lenses I noticed your left arm and you ought to change your name to “Popeye”
So, the hdr mode... it studders.
The enhanced stab.... was actually fantastic! And I'm usually NOT impressed by anyone's stabilization on a mirrorless cam yet. ( the regular stab...junk).
Finally someone who is not praising Canon menus.. I tried using Canon EOS R and I just couldn’t find anything.. some setting will cause some other settings to disappear.. slow motion is in the settings and not in quick menu where you set frame rates.. and if you enable IS digital.. some other things will disappear.. Once I found that 1080p 30 was missing .. I don’t know which setting made it disappear.. I use a Nikon Z6.. used my friends EOS R as B cam.. Z6 is all straight forward.. go to resolution setting and you can pick all frame rates and resolutions.. you can set IBIS and digital IS in same menu.. and can add it to quick menu.. even changing to video mode or photo mode is damn easy.. just use the toggle switch.. changing autofocus setting is also damn easy in Nikon.. and extremely slow to change in canon. Multiple steps required.. its not that I don’t know how to use the camera.. even Sony cameras are easier if you add the necessary stuff to the quick menu.. also the eos R viewfinder was choppy and gave me headache
I bought an EF to EOS R adapter with control ring from Camera Canada because supplies in the U.S. were completely wiped out after the release of the R5 and R6. Didn't even take very long for the item to arrive. I still can't buy one here. Saved by Camera Canada!
Now you got my attention. Your affiliate links do me no good as I live in Germany. Are there affiliate links for people in Europe? I love your content. I am now seriously considering it... Just wondering truly if my mbp from 2014 can handle the 4k in some way.

Love to see my camera being tested by Casey!!!
When you use CLog2 outside, even if the shutter is maxed out, you are still overexposed because the lens is too fast and the base ISO of Clog is too high (i believe it's 800), you need to use an ND filter or stop down the aperture.
The recommended lowest ISO for max DR in C-log is 400. Also, if the lens is too fast stop down; increase f-stop, shutter, or use ND.
The R5 and R6 don't have CLog2 unfortunately, just CLog. I believe Canon is going to put 2 and 3 in the R5, but I don't know about the R6.
Brett the Behemoth I’ll believe it when I see it. 🤣🤣
@@aregal Yep D:
@@aregal my bad then but my point still remain, using ISO400 with a fast 2.8 outside, no wonder why he's always overexposed.
Holy Shit, Sony Alpha Ad pops up right before this Canon R6 vlog starts😂😂😂

Canon seemed over exposed often. But I do like the image quality. especially that butterfly shot looked really nice. I am an all manual type of guy using blackmagic cameras so I think if you tried that and exposed properly you'd be in business with this canon. pretty sure you like to just film and upload without colour correcting stuff though, so I get it.
Thanks for another great video. 1080p looks really good. You probably already discovered this but the switching between picture profiles and C-LOG had different exposures because C-LOG has a higher base ISO. The ease of editing the files seems really software dependent. I use Edius and downloaded a few 4k30 C-LOG clips and they played just fine. It really is a battle for the ages between the R-series and the A7sIII. Went back and watched your 1st A7sIII video and I can't believe I am saying this but I think it looks better than the Canon. The Sony seems to handle the change in exposure better as well as having more room in the shadows. Thanks again!
That’s the hesitation I have with R5 and R6 is if you are ok in 1080 or 4K non HQ, why buy it there are so many good 1080 cameras and 4K non HQ cameras is the price these are going for it worth the upgrade? 🤔 I dunno I have a tough time with that.
But did you figure out a way to save it to a custom mode!? 🤔
I have an EF to RF mount adapter you can borrow for a few weeks if you need it.
"... let's face it.. my channel is finished" @6:39
In the intro shots, the Fuji looked fuzzy/out of focus but I found the R6 extremely noisy in the shadows on the bookshelf, the mirror, the mouse, lens cap on the desk, your shirt, etc. Was it due to the color grade with the LUT? Also, the dynamic range didn't hold up too well in the walkabout especially retaining details in the shadows compared to other cameras you've used. Maybe there was too much harsh sunlight, but in your Sony A7s III video the sun looked bright as well and the A7s III did amazing.
Oh Kasey, that new shitty flute butterfly b-roll song at the end. Epic
I think it isnt new, Im pretty sure thats the song he uses om the dancing transition either here or on veggie police chan.
The R6 is cool in a lot of ways but it definitely feels like it got less development love from Canon than the R5. Not even crazy cutting edge stuff, just normal usability stuff. Here's what I've noticed:
- Indeed there's no way to save video settings to C1,2,3 that I know of. The R5 can do this from what I've seen.
- The joystick doesn't do anything half the time. It works like you'd expect in the menus, but then when you go to image review, left and right do nothing-- on every other camera that flips to the previous and next picture, respectively. You _have_ to use the rotary wheel on the back, which, by the way, is no longer a D-pad/wheel combo. It's just a wheel. Also lets you navigate around the Q menu but pressing in on the joystick doesn't select anything, you have to press the "set" or shutter button.
-No shutter or aperture priority modes in video; it's either full auto or full manual. WHY?
-Setting custom white balance is still a pain in the ass (this is the case on the R5 too to be fair though)
-The R6 has what I'd describe as a 7-10% crop when shooting in 4K. The R5 does not crop unless you tell it to.
The R5 also has a lot more codec, resolution, and framerate options (although strangely no 1080p in any mode above 60fps).
There is the high quality mode. It has the option to enable or disable. By default it is disabled. You a find the setting in the same area where you select the video resolution. Its right below where you turn on high frame rate.
This is the R6 not the R5.
@@cameraconspiracies Yeah, I realize that now... Thought you were out with he R5. Must be nice to have both side by side. You'll get so much material out of them.
Whoa whoa whoa, I didn't expect an Art House film at the end there.

Seems like a great camera for slomo + AF stuff. Can't imagine it's easy for a camera to follow a flying butterfly at 120fps.
