A Polymer Clay Tutorial: The 4 Day Millefiori Cane
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- This cane took me 4 days to get right, yes, 4 days. Basically, I wanted to replicate a cane I'd made years ago - a cane that came into being without a plan. Grab this and grab that, throw them together and I had a cane I really like. So, let's make it again. Easy, right? Not so, but I did it. Finally. After 4 days of cane making. Don't worry, you won't watch Days 1 - 3, just Day 4.
This cane is used in another class - Bug, Gnu, Jaguar class - a way to use canes you have on hand. I would have made the two tutorials one but a 4 hour tutorial seemed excessive!
So, hope you like this one, it was an interesting challenge for me. I have lots of this cane now! If you like it, please Like and Subscribe. I do appreciate that so much.
Cheers, Donna

My mind was blown from thumbnail alone, impressive work!
When you start singing while doing anything,it means that you really enjoy what you are doing. ❤️
I do!😊❤️
I think I met you maybe 30ish years ago in Geneva, Illinois at a bead shop, The BeadHive, where we were learning the basics of cane making. That’s where I got my introduction to polymer clay. You, my lady, ARE an expert as far as I’m concerned. Your work is amazing!
Thank you, Barb! 😊❤️🎉
Not an expert showing you her expert work 😂🎉🎉 Ma'am you are gold, thank you
Thank you! Hugs, D
You are unsurpassed in the caning arena Donna. I actually started polymer clay because of you and your first brilliant book.
Thank you so much, Mary Ellen, I really appreciate that so much. 😊❤️
To me they are all winning canes. 😮😊
Donna I’m new to this from my watching my daughter and now I do Clay and I think all of your mugs are amazing. I love your giraffes and all of your animals you’ve been making my love doing all of this it just is a little expensive, but please don’t throw those away give them to one of your friends. They will love them.
So glad you’re enjoying the tutes! Lol. Those ugly ones are growing on me! 😊❤️
I could just sit and watch you create for hours. It fascinates me and at the same time relaxes me! You are one excellent instructor 💜💜💜 Robs 💜💜💜
Hi Robs!!!!😊❤️🎉
Boa tarde ,Dnna KatoArt ! Sou fascinada pelas Suas Obras Primas !!🙏🙌🙌😘
I have been watching the UA-cam videos on polymer Clay, canes & various styles. Your videos have been very well watched, I feel like I just about know you like a teacher.
I made a purchase yesterday & now have Clay, tools & most of the things to get started. (If I see a pasta roller in opportunity shop 😊 ). 1974 my art teacher introduced me to Egyptian modelling paste.
Thank you very much, Wills! So happy you're here! Cheers, D
OH MY DAYS! These little bugs are truly amazing. You are beyond talented, I love your work. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us. :)
Sunday!😊❤️👍
@Donna Kato - A Life In Polymer Clay Hi Donna. When does your classroom go live and how can I join? I haven't done this before so I'm a real babe in the woods.
IKR!
Donna, I just bought the Kato clay variety pack! I am Soooo Excited! I love your talent and I am extremely Grateful that you share your videos with us and inspire us so much. Thank You!
So THAT's how THAT'S done!!!! (the Skinner blend background) I mean it makes sense but if you don't cane, it's not that I didn't know or thought differently, I just never thought about it and it just seemed more complicated than it is. Well- the concept isn't hard, the actual execution takes a little more finessing. Now I've seen it properly shown- mind blown!!! Wowza! I'm not even done with the video. lol
Yay, Andrea! 😊❤️
It´s like Christmas to find a new tutorial from you, Donna ! Love your work ! If you ever have the same problem again - take o photo of the pattern you want to copy, put it in the computer and print it in the size you want to work. Then you can cut out every piece and use as a guide in the patternpuzzle.
YES!!!!! All I Want For Christmas is Donna Kato Tuts❤❤
Oohhh, good idea….definitely, make a pattern….!😊❤️
Wow!!!!!!❤❤❤
You sure are one persistent gal! Well done, I really identified ! I even need a nap now! Every time I watch you I learn an invaluable technique, thank you so much
I just couldn’t let it go, Eve! Lol, naps are good…!😊❤️
Your my idol you can’t say bad things about your beautiful canes. I have watched many many videos and my brain is finally getting it 🙄 I’m going to try and make my first one very soon. I’m very excited even knowing mine will look BAD. Thank you for your teachings ❤️
What do you mean YOU are not an professional? this is the most intricate and amazing clay work i have ever seen. YOU are definetive a professional! Looks so good
Thank you!!!❤️
This was so fabulous to watch Donna, you make thing's seem easier to do 💜 such a beautiful cane and your bug's are stunning 😍 thank you so very much 💜
Anytime, Tracey!😊❤️
I love her additude and personality!
This is amazing & it’s the 2nd or 3rd time I’ve watched this video & I’ll be watching it again lol.
My dear, if you aren't an expert caner, who is? You do remarkable work. I too, began my polymer clay journey due to seeing your work in a polymer clay book. Thank you my friend, for your valuable instruction!
Aww, thank you, Sandy! Hugs!😊❤️
Just adopt the motto..No two alike! Instant success every time❤
Lol! Yup, A good motto! 😊❤️
The bugs are really cute. Making these is going to be my treat for myself this week!! Thank you Donna
😊❤️🎉
I like this one better than the original. Seems like there's more yellow. Which brightened it up. 😊
👍🎉
Donna Congrats on getting your cane and it is Beautiful.
Thank you for sharing the WHOLE Process💕🙏🏻🫶🏻🤗🇨🇦
So glad you liked it! 😊❤️
I remember seeing you on the Carol Duval show. Your creations amaze me. And if you are dumping any of your canes, you can dump them my way! LOL.
Oh, my, so many years ago. Those were wonderful times. A cane dump. Not a bad idea! Cheers, D
Congratulations!!! It turned out beautifully! And such a cool cane it is - I love it . I so admire your tenacity, to say nothing of your skill. Listening to your tutorials is pure joy. I am going to try this cane and do my best because I want to make one of those little bugs, but also this cane would make stunning jewelry. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I would LOVE to have taken one of your in-person classes but only started :claying" 4 years ago. Happy Spring to you. I am also in Colorado and we had snow 2 days ago!
Hi Caroline! Sometimes you just have to bear down and power through. YOU can do this, I am positive of it. Aaand, Bugs are coming on Sunday! We got snow yesterday, quite a bit but the big one never came! Take care, stay warm! 😊❤️
You did it Donna!!!!! Whoopeeeee! I’m so happy for you and proud! Showing us how many times you had to do it, let’s us see even the best of the best have to keep at it! Omg the bugs are adorable! This has sparked my creativity! I adore you! Rock on! ❤
Thank you, Tatum! Bugs on Sunday, sweety!😊❤️
The legend herself ❤
I just love watching and listening to you. You are very generous in your teaching. M I'm going to join your tuition when I feel better but right now I have the dreaded COVID.
Get well, Louise! Relax, take care of yourself. ❤️
Wow... it's amazing to watch 30 years of experience mold clay into art.
Thank you!😊❤️
Donna you have such a perfect sense of self deprecation and comedic timing. I love it!
And your canes are amazing, by the way.
Aww, thanks, vee! 😊❤️🤪
It is incredible to me how you so evenly reduce your canes. Everything is amazingly straight! You deserve your nap!
Stretchhhhhh, your canes! You see how I pull them? Lots of stretching, kid!😊❤️
Gorgeous! New clay person here. Not sure what I like to do yet but I wanna play! ❤❤❤
Welcome to the wonderful world of polymer clay! 😊❤️
I’m going to do the 4 day cane! I’m stoked!
Yay, Nancy!😊❤️
All of those canes are beautiful! The little bugs are sooo cute! You are a true artist and you must have more patience than I can imagine. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much 😊
Your "failures" are magnificent! Love watching the process from THE master clayologist!
Thank you! 😊❤️
You use so much clay and make such huge canes!! I guess you can do that when you have your own clay company!! You said your not a cane expert- you could have fooled me!!!
Hi Joanne! I don’t own the company, kid. I actually work with the company that produces the clay. I get a great deal on clay - sometimes free, sometimes I just take it from Vernon (he pays for the clay!) so I get a good deal, definitely, but I don’t have mountains of clay at my disposal. Van Aken is very generous to me, though, I have no complaints there. Cheers, D
Lol I loves all the canes.
😊❤️
Donna you are Great at caning
I am a good technical caner, that is what I think I am! I am fine with that, too. Artists like Claire Wallis Dovey and Wendy Jorre de st Jorre make art in canes. Really. Truly. Thank you, Debbie!😊❤️
Donna you are a Champ! What a wonderful tutorial and such a great outcome. Thank you so much. Love this cane. Have a beautiful day x
Thank you, Mandy!😊❤️
You AMAZE me, Donna! Your incredible talent, perseverance and generosity make this world a better place!!! Thank You!😊
Thank you, Eileen😊❤️🎉
I just have to say I love watching you work and your thought process, it's so relaxed and very different and I love it, it makes me 2ant to get in and actually take my time and just enjoy it again, so many artists are doing the same thing, I switch off, I am horrible when it comes to creating, I have no imagination, so I love watching you have fun, thank you for being different 💝 you are a treasure. 💞
Thank you so much, JoJo! I really appreciate your kind and generous words…they mean a lot to me, kid! 😊❤️
You are amazing! Fantastic! You must very pleased. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you, Carol Ann! 😊❤️
You did it!! 🎉
It was a 4 day affair…phew!!!😊❤️
Dear Donna! Thank you so very much! Again❤ I was happy to see that you were pleased with the final result, I think it turned out beautiful. Can't wait to see how the little cute bugs are created! Have a lovely week.
Thank you, Dorota!😊❤️
Oh, I love those bugs, can’t wait.
Thank you Donna for teaching us and sharing your knowledge. ❤
Nana, the bugs are coming! Very soon! 😊❤️
Those are so pretty!
I like them, too! Thank you! Hugs, D
So beautiful. I can't wait to see you make the bugs on Sunday. Thank you.
Buuuugs!!!!😊❤️
Your work is AMAZING❣️
thank you, Cynthia! Hugs, D
Hi Donna, love "chunky" 😂a all the way. Great tutorial as always!!! Thanks for charing your amazing talent xx
Thank you, Angela! 😊❤️
Thank you Donna!! I was intimidated but love the Millefiori cane. Your instruction helped me make this cane and it turned out pretty good. Thank you for persisting over 4 days with this cane, Donna. Excellent teaching!!! I learned so much from you, thanks for not cutting out day1-3 of this video. I am looking forward to your next tutorial!! ❤❤
Fantastic, Annette! Yay!😊❤️
All the canes look beautiful to me 🌈
Thank you, Jane😊❤️
Congratulations Donna🎉! Can't wait to see your new Bug😊.
🪲🐞🪳Sunday!😊❤️
Making canes has always seemed too difficult for me. Like quilting, I admire the result, but have held myself away from the craft due to time and space issues... But the bugs are sooooo cool... And I love the shell boxes full of canes. The possibilities are beckoning. My nature is not to plan, nor carefully approach a thing. I must jump in and just start doing it...🤷🏼. Besides, if I had a plan, I'd set it aside after the first error and proceed to encounter mistake after mistake until I'd learned many lessons about why things are done the way they're done, until I have my first crocheted hat, afghan, vest, decorated box, doll dress, sculpted doll, doll chair, painting, and so on. I am an artist, not an architect... Lol... Of course I will try to make your four day cane as my first cane ever... or the one with the stripes I watched last night... It's going to be epic! 😆😁🤣🤪😃
You know, if you saw my cane collection, you'd see that I have lots of simple canes. I prefer using many simple canes to create a more complex picture rather than make very complex canes that present only one face! I think you might prefer that way of working - it increases the usefulness and versatility of what you have without taking tons of time and material! Yup. Hugs, D
@@DonnaKatoArt Yes! I've begun the adventure and am trying to keep it simple. I see how you've used simple canes to accent and create more complex designs. I go to bed and fall asleep thinking about how I can use the stamps, stencils, paints, powders, clays and cutters I've collected. It's so engaging for the creative mind! 🥰🥳
Hi Donna, I just wanted to say thankyou so much for the inspiration. I absolutely love the bold black and white and the fiery blend! ❤
I love playing with colour blends, with black and white at either ends, and I rarely use solid blocks of colour, only for wraps and small fills.
After watching this video, I really would like to incorporate some bolder elements in my designs because I just love the various effects of your black and white canes (well done by the way, as someone who has been making canes for many years, I can fully empathise with how much work you put into these canes, I hope you rested your hands after all that!) ❤
Also thankyou for sharing your thought processes with us, I always find that inspiring.
As much as I would have loved a day five, I'm so glad you nailed it ❤ They're all equally beautiful though of course (that's what I tell my canes anyway 😀)
much love xxx
P.S. I would totally have watched a four hour video 🙂
Hi Tammy! You know, that black and white element was just a toss in in the original cane so I have to admit I was surprised by how much I liked it. There was no plan, it just kind of made itself. Reproducing, or trying to, was an education for me and I learned from it! Lol, I shot sooo much gb of the process…big hugs!😊❤️🎉
This is my third day with Donna! Guess it takes four days for me to make this cane! But it’s coming! Wish I could share a picture with you Donna!
Hi Katie! Unfortunately, UA-cam isn’t the place! Are you interested in joining the Member’s classroom? We have a facebook group for posting pix! Let me know! Hugs😊❤️
Love that colour combo, Yum! Love the tutorial as well. Thanks for sharing.❤
😊❤️🎉
Amazing cane!!
Thank you!😊❤️
These canes are so well done. You are so hard on yourself, calling yourself lazy and sloppy sometimes. I don't think you are that at all. Nothing is a complete failure, even if you just learned what not to do.
Absolutely, you are right, Ramo. I am lazy and sloppy sometimes, though…it manifests itself mostly in unwise shortcuts!!! 😊❤️
Donna you are just adorable and so entertaining to watch! How did you become so talented with clay? I’m just starting out and I’m amazed at what you are creating!
Hi Mallory! You know polymer clay just grabbed me. I saw the book “the New Clay” and I was hooked. This was 30 plus years ago and I have a very short attention span so it is verry special, I think. If you delve deeper, it will never disappoint and it will always be interesting and rewarding. I hope you do, Mallory!😊❤️
Hi Donna, Thank you so much for this tutorial, I made it right along with you! Not knowing if it’s even going to work out is pretty fun when you cut into and your happy with it. I learned a lot about being more precise with adding each element and it’s not as perfect as yours (of course!!) but, I can see how it makes you want to make it again. Even better the second or third or even the fourth time!! Thank you so much for your expertise in milifiori cane making. I’m going to look for the Facebook members group!!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Krisi! Precision helps, kid. Now, the facebook group is set up for Members of the channel. If you want to know what that’s about, here’s the link:
ua-cam.com/channels/eRlb3K2k-_b1QAGYDuW1IQ.htmljoin
If you join, you see private Community posts and the link to the fb group. Make sense? Have a good one!
I disagree with you. You are an excellent caner. I’m so envious. I follow the instructions and get hopeful that it will turn out but get disappointed with the end result because it’s all mashed together junk. However I’m learning something new each time I watch. Thank you for inspiring me as I go.
i'm okay, gaye. there are just some caners who do really amazing work, shaded, detailed and maybe i could do it if i dedicated the time necessary. i just hop around with this or that and it's fine, it's the way i have always worked and it's worked out! hugs, d
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!😊❤️
Donna thanks for your marathon and congratulations on your achievements. I had sore hands watching you... I have a locking middle finger too but feel claying is great exercise for the hands..in moderation of course 🎉
It is, Joyce! I feel lucky to have just a locking finger, kid!😊❤️
@@DonnaKatoArt I wish Donna.. at 70 I’m an elder tribeswoman.. lol but you can call me kid anytime 🙏🏽
I just LOVE your canes and videos! I especially enjoy watching how careful and precise every step is! Thank you so very much!!!
Yay, Trish!❤️
Wow. Thank you for showing you can goof. I can’t wait. 1:58:54 But your ends! Beautiful. Earrings!
👍😊❤️
This was very interesting! Imlove watching how you handle the clay.
An enormous thank you for sharing such an in depth tutorial and bouts of polymer clay wisdom; incredibly inspiring 😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you, Lesley!😊❤️
Beautiful, thank you
Brilliant!! A FOOT PEDDLE! Genius ! I thought maybe you had a sensor on your motor. Is the foot peddle made just for the pasta machine. I’m going to search for one. Thanks again Donna you are a GEM💞
Sometimes a sewing machine pedal works. A friend uses a Christmas might ball switch. It sits on the floor and you step on it! I will look and see if i can find mine. It works!😊❤️
You amaze me!
😊❤️🎉
I think that finger that locks up is a trigger finger. I have to dig in real hard to the base of mine and it’s related tendons, bones and muscles. It hurts but it works and my finger hasn’t locked up again.
It comes and goes! Hoping it leaves!❤️
Oh wow, how beautiful!!❤❤😊
Thank you, Mary!😊😊
hermoso, y muy buena explicacion. gracias
you're very welcome! Hugs!
Bravo it’s perfect 😁
😊❤️🎉
This is sooo pretty. ❤️🦋
Fantastic! So beautiful❤
Thank you, Jennifer!😊
I just love this…Was so mesmerizing to watch…I could never make theses….But do you sell your bugs? I’d so love to have some of them…Ty for sharing….❤❤
Hi Linda! I do have some bug pins. If you’d like to see them, just shoot me an email, kid. dkkato@gmail.com! 😊❤️
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much!🎉❤️
Morning Ms. Donna!! I am so excited for THIS! Thank you for being so creative and sharing your talent. Did I miss the curved letters for the initial cane? I must check after watching this class. 😱😂 Have a great day! I look forward to your notifications! 💜💜💜
Giamarie! I am going to start the curved letters this weekend! 😊❤️
@@DonnaKatoArt yay! I'm so excited. Can't wait!
You do a very awesome
Lindooooooo, perfeito, maravilhoso.
Grazie!😊❤️
Thanks!
Thank you so much, Sheila Jean! I so appreciate your generosity! I am so touched. 😊❤️
Drum roll, please! ...YEAH!!!
👍😊❤️
Precioso
WOW!
I have much cane now!❤️
Looks awesome. Might I suggest, instead of making it again, you could make a little cut at those tips and insert a black line. LoL.... I wouldn't have the energy to make it again. My hands hurt from just watching you reduce.
I think I shall just file those little things that make a big difference in my mind and do my best to remember! Haha, let’s see if I do! Good suggestion, though. 😊
Gorgeous as always... Please tell me there's a part 2 to show us how you assemble the bug... Or is it one that's still too new to share because of the students who took the class? 😢😢😢
Hi Tanya, I didn’t teach the bug in person. It’s coming on Sunday!😊❤️
@@DonnaKatoArt Yyyyaaay!!!! So excited. Its like knowing Sunday is Christmas. 😂😁😂 Thank you. Can't wait.
Просто супер, огромное спасибо мастеру!
Thank you! 😊❤️
Donna. Love your work. Do you use the black you make with blackout in your canes or is it all new clay? Thanks for sharing you talent.
Hi Sylvia; I use the blackout black for everything! In canes, sheets, etc. Sometimes it's a bit soft - Blackout softens the clay as it makes it black so I guess it's soft of a case by case basis. I love it. Hugs, D
@@DonnaKatoArt
Thanks Donna. I love it too!!
How do you keep the edges of your cane ends so straight? I'm in awe!
Hi Giselle! I think they’re not. I cut at a slight angle. It’s just naturally the way I send the blade through the cane! 😊❤️
Wonderful cane, how does your cane stay so precise? Is it your clay that’s not sticky? I struggle so much as my hands are very warm! Have just got some of yours but I’m in the UK 🇬🇧 so it’s not readily available 😊
Paula, okay so my clay isn’t sticky. It’s great for caning. But, I also don’t make huge canes. The closer you work to the finished (reduced) size, the less distortion you will have. Make sense? 😊❤️🎉
Yes it does.. thanks for taking the time to help it’s appreciated 🤗
I have a major difficulty of all of my designs distorting heavily, not just on the ends as they will, but in the middle. I purpose even use your clay because it doesn't distort as much, but there's still quite a bit of distortion. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I've seen just a couple of videos about distortion but none of them answered the questions directly. BTW, LOVE your videos. Placed $100 order for your clay this month and will likely do the same again in May! :D
Hi David! Okay, so, you might try making the clay in the center softer than the perimeter cane. Pay attention to outline, too, sometimes, if the clay is hard, it lags behind and that can create reduction issues. I’m a small caner - nothing huge and so reduction is easier and patterns distort less. If you watched the signature cane, you can see the pushing down on the ends, you can push pretty hard because once the clay is moving, the pattern stretches out and straightens up. Make sense? 😊❤️
@@DonnaKatoArt These are wonderful tips! Thank you! :)
Are you going to show us how to make your cute little bugs? Please?
Tomorrow is Bug Day!
😊❤️
I would absolutely love to know how you have created your signature canes. Please would you help me? X
Okay, Anita, I pretty much covered the alphabet so watch those classes first, okay? You could make a simple A and G! I think you’ll find it pretty easy! Cheers, D
Thanks so much, I've only just subscribed & hadn't seen those tutorials. Sorry x
I know they didn’t turn out like your original, and I’m just a spectator at this point, but they are beautiful to me. Am I wrong to say that????
Thank you, Kristi! I appreciate your kind words!😊❤️
Donna jf you don’t mind me asking could you tell me where you got the motor and what brand it is for your atlas pasta machine? I have an atlas 150 also but the motor I have is the green one everyone sells but it doesn’t fit into it like it should. There is a gap in it and it kind of wobbles a little. I mean I was told it would be ok but I just want to look into a different motor . Yours seems to fit real tight and close. Mine didn’t come with a foot pedal either. I think i bought my motor at Amazon or hobby lobby or maybe even Joann’s. I love this cane video. I can’t wait to start making me some bugs. Be safe, enjoy your life and God Bless
Hi Cindy! I use an Atlas 150 machine and an Atlas motor. My foot pedal is made by Foredom. Hope this helps! Cheers, D😊❤️
@@DonnaKatoArt thanks Donna
Donna- when you say we will need ultramarine blue to mix into the red, is that just the reg blue from your line? I’m assuming so?
Oops, you're so right, I meant Ultra Blue - we don't call it Ultramarine - we abbreviated it, kid. Hugs!
Donna- I was thinking about changing the main colors, the reds, I was thinking of doing some blue/teal/and then the ones that are green I would use a yellow/greenish- etc- have you done this with other colors? I think I will do that and I’ll share it on FB - did you create a group for that?
You know, Nance, I haven't but I think those colors would be grand! I can't wait to see! Hugs! D
Please show us all you make with the leftover canes 👀
I will work on that, Jane!😊❤️
