6 Ways to Adopt a Daily Self Care Routine After 60 | Healthy Aging Tips

  • Society today is all about giving. Giving your time to a job, offering resources to a cause, giving your attention to the needs of family and friends. And while these things can be rewarding, it leaves little time for us to focus on our own needs.
I often tell family caregivers that self-care is not just going on a spa day once a year or the occasional break away to get their hair done or to buy a new outfit. Self-care needs to be a daily practice to feel as rested and good about ourselves as we can be.
Community Question - How are you planning to take care of your own needs this year?

I am 69. I work out at the gym, 3 times a week, cook from scratch with much of it coming from our garden. I go to bed at the same time each night (10) and get up at 6. I am involved in helping others a lot. I feel very lucky.

I plan to spend more time with friends. I've allowed myself to become too isolated.

I have done a lot of research on this subject. Studies show that 70% of aging is due to lifestyle. The major key to staying youthful is exercise! Our bodies were not designed for fast food, TV watching or retirement. When you exercise you send grow messages to both your body and your brain!

I try to walk at least 2 miles a day. Go see a movie once a week. Treat myself to a nice dinner alone at least once a month. ~Elizabeth

Hi Margaret! At 67, I've started quilting. I used to sew my own clothes in my 20's but haven't done much since then. I started with a Beginner's course at my local quilting guild and discovered a whole new community of women. I didn't have a sewing machine and asked if I could borrow one for the duration of the class. Turned out someone had recently donated one and they simply gave it to me! Talk about being in the "zone"!! I'm now on my second quilt and enjoy playing with colours, patterns and designs - I've already planned the next two. My goal is to make one quilt for each young person in my extended family. It's very enjoyable, working with fabric again and slowing down to do something with my hands. Love your other suggestions too. Thanks for all you do :)

Hi, you are so right about taking care of yourself, I lost my husband last June, I took care of him for several years, the grief is not so bad now, as you say Its important to stay active, I talk and wave to people I don’t know, but it all helps to cheer up other people too. I walk, garden and have lots of projects and friends. It wasn’t easy, but with your comments and advice it’s another step to positivity. Thank you so very much. Deanne xx

Hi Deanne, I don't know if you meant June 2018 or 2017, either way, I was widowed young myself. My condolences on your loss. A resource with a not great name that I found so helpful and you can find it @ Amazon or your local B&N is The Grief Recovery Handbook. It was the _only _ book to address the emotions. Just, I hope it helps, and condolences needed to be expressed when you share something like that here in the comments. Cheers and blessings, April

I passed a lady who had purchased about a dozen long stem simple pretty blooms, and was passing them out to people she passed along the trail, sidewalk in the park. It was delightful seeing that. I got a flower, too.

Margaret, I've watched you off and on for a few years now, and each time you give me cheer and encouragement. Thank you so much for your cheerful, positive attitude. I have set a goal to read one book per month. I know that's not much for many people, but I have been a slow reader for most of my life, but now reading faster. I also am returning to my daily, morning routine of walking of 2 miles.

I appreciate you very much. I’ll be thinking about your question today. I’m not sure I am doing very much for ‘me’ anymore. I am still working full time and taking care of grandchildren all the time. I keep thinking that when I retire I’ll start doing things for myself but your words today made me feel like i can start doing some good things now. I used to love to read and I will start there. Thank you.

Oh pretty rose quartz necklace! Plus I really like your colorful lamp! Practicing a wonderful daily self care routine is so wonderful. Ah yes, I started being a care giver to my late husband during his battle with cancer in my mid 30s. My fiance and I like to take simple walks in the outdoors. After my hip replacement surgery, I am rebuilding ENERGY. My walking is great, but my stamina apparently will take aWHILE to rebuild. I try also to put on a rebuilding clear nail polish for my pretty me self care. Part of the post surgery stress I developed alopecia (that's FANCY for major hair loss, it's coming back, but it's taking TIME.) and even thinner nails. So must make an effort. And we are ALL artists. Enjoy! Cheers and blessings, lady, April

I think it will help me to make a statement (help me to be committed). I dread winter, so the 1st thought was to simply meet it! I hope to be successful. I hope there is a Plan B should that not work out. A plan for all the seasons, $ being a problem (among other things). This site is great. I like the emphasis on us.

Margaret, it's nice to find one of your videos when I need a smile or inspiration from you or the other 60-ers. When I turned 60 (I'm 61 now) the writing on the wall became pretty clear. After a life of careless eating, undisciplined physical activity, etc., I decided I had to make some changes. I am fortunate enough to be able to afford a trainer at my local gym. I hate having to stick to the routine but love my trainer, she's so much fun. It keeps me accountable 3X per week. I would not go if I didn't have an appointment. The biggest and best thing I have done for my health is to have a green drink every single morning. It's not complicated or time consuming (otherwise I would not do it, lazy me) Here's the recipe, all organic, for two days worth of drinks: In a blender, 20 ounces water, 3 packets organic granulated stevia (like granulated sugar packets), two huge handfuls spinach, several kale leaves, 1/2 apple, 1/2 pear, 1/2 cup frozen blueberries. After reading one of your articles about health, I also add some magnesium. Of course you could add anything else you might want like ground flax seeds, etc. But the greens are the really important thing. Anyway, blend it all up for about a minute. I then immediately drink 1/2 of it and put the other half in a re-purposed glass Prego spaghetti sauce jar and have it the next day. It's so good! All you taste is the fruit, but it does look like swamp water. I don't get sick any more and have tons of energy. I make it a priority to get to the store once a week so I have the veggies on hand without fail. I am not a huge veggie lover so this has me covered for the most part. Thanks so much for all you do, see you tomorrow morning!

Your suggestion "Have a Conversation" is of interest to me. I'm looking for ways to connect with others. I spent my whole life working and maintaining professional relationships, but never learned how to maintain deep and intimate friendships. Now I am 67 yo, retired and a caregiver for my 87 yo dad. Is there a way to connect with others online. I'm looking for a support group. I tried AARP but came up short. And I see many groups for women like sixty and me, but I'm looking for a coed group that welcomes women and men.
