    I wouldn't call a Lexus nor a Prado a poor mans LC. Poor mans LC is a 4runner or an FJ cruiser. Anyway, just slap TRD wheels and you're set.

      No Toyota’s are cheap, actually the resale on the 5th gen 4Runner and the FJ cost more than the GX. Not sure but the GX aren’t that expensive used. Tacoma’s also are higher than the 1st gen GX on similar year models.

    • @chimbatete
      @chimbatete 4 роки тому +19

      @@jaymoar3561 That's because not many knows that the GX is a land cruiser Prado. 90% of people who buy cars or SUVs arent aficionados. It's true that technically later model 4runners are more expensive because of demand but in places not in North America, the Prado or GX is a premium vehicle.

      @@jaymoar3561 Vehicles that have higher operating costs cause the used car value to be lower. Used BMWs are relatively cheap because of their high maintenance and repair costs, while used GXs with 8 cylinder engines are valued less than more fuel efficient 6 cylinder Toyotas.

      Great overview on the purchase. It's a stepping stone, you just keep upgrading until you get to the one you want. I stumbled into the off-road SUV platform back when my college friends took me to the beach with their 4Runner and Jeep Cherokee. Prior to that I owned a boring Corolla. I still own and drive a supercharged 99 4Runner (J90 platform and my college graduation purchase), a GX470 (J120 platform and after we had our first two children), and a LX570 (J200 platform and after we had our fourth child). They all have been super reliable (been across the US a couple of times and my maintenance downtime, if any, are pretty minimal), fit the family (until we outgrew the # of passengers we can carry hence the upsizing trend) , easy to maintain and wrench on (share parts and/or design layout), and capable off road (Moab, Death Valley, most beaches, dunes, and trails in California and Oregon) even with minimal modifications. I will likely pass the 4Runner and the GX to my two oldest in a couple of years. Although I personally own Toyota/Lexus vehicles, I wheel and wrench with friends with Jeep, Nissan, Dodge, Mitsubishi, Mercedes, Land Rover, and other Toyotas. They all have their individual shortcomings.

    I really like the GX460. I think it makes a great platform for overlanding and general exploring, however the new 2020 has such low hanging bodywork that it really hampers the vehicle. The 4wd components and systems are very capable, but the new bodywork is made for a city car. Your 2010 has great bodywork compared to the 2020. I hope Lexus catches onto the fact that lots of people are actually using these to tow, camp and explore with their families and they trim up the bodywork.

    Excellent video! Find one of these vehicles to actually go off road is one of those things that you either get it or don’t. We take our GX 470 off road at least once a week. It is a 2008 GX 470 that we got with 172,000 mile six months ago. It now has 183,000. This thing gets driven a lot and the only thing I really had to do was fix a leaking manifold. Definitely my favorite vehicle and we’re looking to get a brand new 2021 GX 460 to replace my wife’s pilot. Keeping the 2008 too.

    The 25 year life thing isn't fanboy lore. It's factual, it's just that Toyota doesn't honor a warranty for that time. But the major components are over engineered to last that long. Also, a $65k SUV isn't a "poor man's" Land Cruiser. But I get your point seeing as you bought an older one for $15k. You can do 75% of the upgrades most people would do for far less than $15k and that includes replacing the front and back bumpers, rock sliders, a lift kit, and all new wheels and tires. All of that is a little over $6k

    Old land rovers look super cool but are generally unreliable and prone to frequent issues and costly repairs. I had an old discovery (1998 with only 70k from 2006 to 2011) and it was as always something. I have had a very old 2006 Lexus GX470 since 2020 (185k miles on it) and I have had zero issues. It’s way faster than the old Land Rover too. And while I didn’t like the way these looked back in 2006, by today’s standards it now looks quite rustic. Only paid 9000 for it, right before the used car market went nuts.

    Good luck with it. Very nice rig. I'm pretty new to overlanding myself. For what it's worth I started with tires, an inexpensive LED light bar (I'm on the beach at night fishing, like... lots), and the ARB rear differential breather kit (which you can install yourself fairly easily) because, again...I'm on the beach fishing, like .. lots. And sometimes it gets very puddley at the beach. It's also nice to know, that for less than $100 bucks, you can drive through those rivers that look so cool in all the videos without worrying about flooding your rear differential and needing thousands of bucks to fix it. Anyway... Decent AT tires and the rear diff breather elevation and you can go almost anywhere! Again... Just my two cents. Enjoy it dude!

    I like Mr. Wood's demeanor. He sort of reminds me of Dangle on Reno 911. One time I took my wife to test drive a car. It lasted 5 seconds because the interior smelled. But given the situation, if the only thing really wrong is a dissipating smoke odor then the question becomes: in hindsight now that the smell is Ok or at least bearable, would you still do the deal? I don't have the personality style that allows me to buy a used car without driving it first.

    The 25 year thing is bs....they are well built trucks but not bulletproof. They require maintenance, lots and lots of maintenance as they get older. I was looking for 100 series and ran across a 2003 LX. The second owner had spent $16k in maintenance. Not terrible for 200k miles but much more than “just oil changes”.

    Great video! I had the same problem. I wanted a Land Cruiser or LX570, but the price point was too high. I drove the GX460, but it didn't feel like it would have enough power to pull my boat. I settled on a MB GL550. Now I am thinking I want to added some All Terrian tires to that to give us more offroad options as we get into camping.

    • @MaximumDIYGarage
      @MaximumDIYGarage 4 роки тому

      Steven, although the MB's GL five fiddy is rated at 7,500lb for towing capacity over GX460's 6,500lbs, the strain on that twin-turbo MB engine and transmission is going to show it's ugly face much sooner than most anticipate and that translates to insanely high repair costs. As long as your boat is under 6,000lbs, you've got nothing to worry about. But the Lexus is built on the same frame as the FJ Cruiser and the 4Runner, which are meant to tow, whereas the MB is unibody, which design is not quite meant for heavy towing. To be honest, I've never seen anyone tow anything over 4,000-5,000lbs in a GL450/550. If you gotta tow 7,000lbs and more, get a full-sized F-1-fiddy or a diesel pickup. Those are just my thoughts. In short, the MB is not as reliable as the GX, especially if you're going to tow with tit frequently. But its a sweet ride though! Cheers!

    • @Steven-xj2rf
      @Steven-xj2rf 4 роки тому

      @@MaximumDIYGarage The boat and trailer are about 5000lbs. It is the x164 with the 5.5L NA V8 punching out 380hp and 390lb torque at a low RPM. It is built like a tank and everything seems to be a bit overbuilt on it. The 7-speed transmission is known to be tough. So far so good. I bought it with 90k on it and it has 135k on it. I do all of my own maintenance and the only issue so far is rear airbags went out. $150 and 30 minutes, later it was fixed. The GX is a neat little truck, but it would struggle to do the job with 6-7 passengers pulling the boat on the way to the lake. The GL550 does it with easily and most important safely.. (RANT - Toyota hasn't done anything in 10+ years so it is time they get in the game. It is pretty sad that a 4.7 from a GL450 was making 335hp with 7-speed transmission in 2007 and Lexus is pushing the GX460 with 4.6L making 301hp with a 6-speed transmission in 2020. Yuck! I am not biased towards any brand. I have owned them all outside Korean cars.)

  • @willytrouble88
    @willytrouble88 3 роки тому +1

    Although it's the same vehicle as the Prado, for the most part, it's not even close in terms of off-road/overland capability. For example, the GX has a range of about 300 miles...if you're lucky. Whereas the Prado has a range of 550 miles, on average. the GX's fuel economy with the V8 under over landing conditions is about 10-12 MPG (15MPG on highway). The Prado gets 25MPG+ with the petrol V6, and even better with the diesel. So, while it's novel to compare the GX to the Prado, they really are quite different in capabilities and design purpose. The GX is just not a practical machine for over landing primarily due to the V8 engine which delivers horrendous.....i repeat.....absolutely horrendous fuel mileage. The earlier model GX470's got better fuel mileage, 17MPG highway, so not sure where Toyota/Lexus was going with this new 4.6L engine. Yes I owned a GX470 and I now own a GX460. the GX470 was a fantastic vehicle, with inadequate fuel economy. The GX460 is just an absolute train wreck. Needless to say, a better over landing vehicle is a base model 4 Runner. That will be my next car, despite being a die-hard GX driver since 2005.

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  3 роки тому +1

      Those are some really good points and I agree, the fuel is awful. Thats my biggest complaint. But you can’t really get a prado here and the 4runner just isn’t that nice inside, has a lower towing capacity and only has KDSS on the most expensive models. When I compared, the same year 4runner with similar miles with kdss was 30% more than I paid for my gx. If you’re building an expedition vehicle every mile counts. If you’re taking the family into the bush for 3-4 days and maybe down to baja a couple times a decade, I think the gx is still a great choice : )

    Give me your take on a 11 460 vs a 09 470. I do see more out there on the 470 but to me when you can get a 11 with a couple thousand less miles for close to a 09 with the same miles I lean to the newer Vehicle

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  3 роки тому +1

      It seems like the 120 series in general have a few more issues with rust and paint. Essentially, thats the only thing that kills these. The 460 has KDSS standard and a few more HP for about the same MPG, but they have essentially the same suspension and you’d have to pour sand in either engine to kill them (if maintained). The nice thing about the 460 is no timing belt. If it were a daily driver, I’d go 460. If it were mostly for around the neighborhood and the trail I don’t think it matters if they both have KDSS. I don’t think the year or milage matters as much with Toyota products if they’re maintained.

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  3 роки тому

      One other thought. The hp increased between the 470 & 460 but the torque is about the same. Hp tows trailers uphill, torque crawls up rock shelves. You might be better off with a 460 if you tow but Off-road, they’re essentially the same rig.

      I did Plati on everything except the handles. I thought those would hold up better with Vinyl. TBH I hate the look of the matte black vinyl compared to plasti-dip but you can't really plati-dip the handles because of the seam. I may go to a gloss black on the handles at some point to match the paint better instead of trying to match the two matte materials. The plasti is holding up great and I was on FR all summer. I think I did like 10ish coats because I didn't want to redo it anytime soon.

    Regarding your comment about the Land Cruiser, (not the GX) being a 25 year design and engineered rolling beast...... Read it from Toyota's chief engineer......
    Excerpts from article in Automotive Industries, Feb. 1998, by Lindsay Brook
    Design/Engineering: Chassis
    Design of UZJ100, as the '98 Cruiser program is coded, was frozen in mid-1994, says veteran chief engineer Takeo Kondo. At that point, the previous FJ80 model was three years old. And as on every previous Cruiser, UZJ100 has body-on-frame construction.
    "There was never any consideration of unibody design," Kondo tells AI. "Long-term durability has always been the number one goal of the Land Cruiser program," he explains, "and we expect these vehicles to be on the road for at least 25 years."
    My family currently drives seven of the twelve LC/LXs we've owned since 1996. I can tell you Mr. Kondo's design and engineering has worked extremely well for me and many many others.

There were plenty of LX’s available but after driving a few we realized we really need a functioning third row that folds away completely. The LX third row is kind of a sad hold over from previous designs. If you leave them in they eat up half the cargo area. Taking them out requires tools an a couple hours. The gx 3rd row takes some space but because they fold into the floor, we can build on top of them. When the kids leave we’ll loose them all together and get a drawer system. Hope that helps!
