We originally were waiting for the GX460 to come out before buying our 2009, but were disappointed in the way you really felt the extra 500+ pounds which made it feel sluggish in comparison. One other plus on the 470 is the side cladding, which make it virtually door-ding proof
Thanks for the comments. Watched an interesting video where a GX470 and GX460 race off the line. The GX470 clearly beats on the low end, but then the GX460 comes back and ultimately wins on the too end. Wonder why they did the gearing that way. MPG maybe?
I have driven both the Lexus GX 470 and GX 460 extensively, putting 370,000 miles combined on two Lexus GX 470 models, and now 90k+ on a GX 460, and without equivocation will tell you my GX 470 provided a superior drive and seating experience. First-off the interior of the Lexus GX-470 was much richer that the newer, cheapen down with less wood and more cheap plastic GX 460. The engine in the original GX 470 purchased in 2003, was tuned to provide superior acceleration compared to the engines of later incarnations of the GX 470 and definitely superior to the GX 460. My wife and I often commented during our rides, that the ride and acceleration of my 2003 Lexus GX 470 was superior to that of my 2009 GX 470 in sport and comfort modes. The front seats of the GX 470 were plusher compared to the seats of my 2017 GX 460, but had less lateral support, and may have been a tad longer, proving a bit better thigh support. The arm rest on the GX 470 models was an independent and adjustable device, but somewhat thin/narrow, while the armrest on the GX 460 is not adjustable and therefore does not accommodate drivers and front-seat passengers whose height varies from design range parameters. The 2nd row seats in the GX-470 were comfortable and reclinable, with amble bolstering supporting thighs and ones back, with relatively useless 3rd row seats that did not fold flat, but rather sideways reducing storage cargo space, or could easily be removed from the vehicle and stored if not being used (I never used them, so they were removed) to permit my humongous dog passage. The 2nd row seats in the GX 460 are perhaps the poorest ergonomically designed in the entire automotive world. For a vehicle that is supposedly designed for passenger comfort and transport, not for carting cargo (Lexus used this rationale to explain their quirky side-swing rear door, claiming it better serves passengers seated in the 3rd row), to have such poorly designed 2nd row seats that are so uncomfortable to sit in for any length of time is inexcusable. They are flat, too short, limiting thigh support, and offer zero support for passenger's lumbar spine, analogous to siting on a park bench or at a ball park. The 3rd row seats are laughable, and only suitable for toddlers and for exceedingly short rides at that, as anyone over 4 feet in height sitting in the 3rd row will find their knees jammed up into their face. The front grill and bumper of the GX-470 provided a superior approach angle for off-roading compared to the overstated and grotesque front-end of the current GX-460, while the approach angle of the 2010 series GX 460 was superior to current GX-460's. I owned the top trim level of the GX-470's and the Luxury level of the GX-460. Got to have the Mark Levinson Sound System, it is fantastic, even if it doesn't have Apple Airplay (which I do not use anyway). I still carry my CD's around (Old School). I just purchased a Lexus LX 570, and absolutely hate the from Grill/bumper, much preferring that of the Toyota LandCruiser (could not find one anywhere near my location). However, in the USA the interiors of LandCruisers are not executed that same as they are in Africa and the Middle East. In those parts of the world the LandCruiser is fitted like the Lexus LX 570 is here in the USA, but to avoid competition with the Lexus LX 570 here in the USA, they keep the LandCruiser interior plainer, less modern, less updated, less rich. If I could get one of the new 2022 Toyota LandCruisers with the Diesel engine, that is the way I would go.
Thanks for the comments! I too had a GX470 and loved it - put 220k miles on it without a single major mechanical failure. Wish I hadn’t sold it for a Yukon Denali (which I mostly hated). I don’t hate the interior of the GX460 but preferred the GX470 interior - nicer leather and support - though the air conditioned GX460 seats are really nice in the Texas summers!
I have a 460 and I agree on most of these. But the one reason I went with the 460 was that it was being sold pre owned by Lexus, and the service history showed that Lexus fixed all of the issues it had. So much harder to find a GX470 in good condition, especially one that is being sold at a Lexus dealer. But regardless of it’s shortcomings, I love my 460.
@@andybub45 went to see a 470 at Ken Shaw Lexus in Toronto & it was making a ticking noise so checking the oil it was totally empty. You should differentiate the offroad angles depending on the years as the early GX460s have a lot better numbers. Couple things to also note that KDSS is standard on most gx460 and almost impossible to find on gx470s.
Ramzi - I agree on the early 460's but it got ugly trying to keep it all straight. Maybe the next video will be the 460 Battle Royale - 2010 vs 2014! :D
Really like the 470, but right now prices everywhere are like $22k vs getting a 2016 for $30k with 1/2 the miles. ONLY other thing that is pushing me to 460 over 470 is the AC in the very back for the dogs
Thanks for the comment - really appreciate it! I agree - prices on the GX470 have really shot up in 2021 making the GX460 a closer competitor. The GX470 still has better aftermarket support but the GX460 is catching up quickly! At the end of the day - it’s really all about the dogs anyway isn’t it! 😂😂 🐕 🐩
Timing Chain>Timing Belt. My biggest issue with the GX 470 is almost every single one I have looked at needed the timing belt done. So it was immediately a huge repair I had to do right away. GX 460 seems like a better value right now. GX 470 are going through the roof.
I think that is about to change- as all used vehicle prices are starting to fall again.. and about to crash soon. I know several dealers who are very concerned about getting stuck with stock..
@@davidwayne9982 I don’t know man… aren’t they saying chip shortages could go into next year? Seems like used might be stuck at these prices if not more for a while
I have both the 2006 GX470 and a 2016 GX460. The 470 is the workhorse that I now use to haul lumber for my workshop and the 460 is what I use to go to work with. Somehow I think the 470 has more of the 0-60 mph type of acceleration than my 460 as on a trip from Galveston to Houston I got left in the dust by my college age daughter. Then again I had been her driving instructor so maybe she just drives how I instructed her. There is a noticeable difference when driving between the 2 as I have to Sport mode on the 460 to be able to catch up to the feel and driving performance of the 470. AT 95k miles the 470 is a gas guzzler at 12.5mpg as opposed to the 460 with 15.5 mpg. I got stuck on a decline/incline going from a freeway to a feeder road which my old 470 was able to negotiate before. Fortunately with some back and forth maneuvering and a good Samaritan who indicated to me what to do with hand signals I was able to get back on the freeway. The 470 in my daughters hands was able to negotiate the flooding here in Houston better than I did as I warned her not to go through Bellaire blvd as it was flooded and I had a hard time but she said it was easy. Then again that may be just my driving instruction.
First - sounds like you're in my old hood. I drove Bellaire daily going to EHS. I've navigated those stalled out cars on the median plenty of times before as I blew past in my 1978 GMC Jimmy on 35s! As for the GX470 vs GX460... I hear ya. I think the GX470 has more pep... there's some videos on UA-cam proving it but the GX460 catches up and wins above 55mph. I do miss the Sport adjustable suspension from my GX470 but didn't want the airbag route on my GX460 since I knew I'd be installing a suspension lift. Both great cars though - you're lucky to have both! At 95k miles your first one is just getting broken in!
I agree about the 0-60. The main reason the 460 seems slower is because it is tuned for fuel economy. The target market of this vehicle is unfortunately soccer moms and older people.
From my little experience driving both (a 2003 GX470 and a 2012 Gx460) the 470 is easier to drive, on road at least. So if you're looking for either as a daily driver you might want to consider this.
For me, it's the 470. I'm just using it for off-road weekend adventures and overlanding. Plus, I'm going to change the suspension and change the wheels/bigger tires.
Yeah you can upgrade GX460 as capable of a GX470 and its not that complicated but the all features and amenities that GX460 offer can’t do it in an older GX470. Also resale value wise GX460 will have better price than older ones. So you pay little bit extra but then you also get that back in the end.
Sadly, the prices for any of these used is outright insane. The past year plus, it seems everything went up $5K to $10K. The 470 wasn't even close to $75K, more like just over $50K, and now they're selling for over $20K with 100K+ miles. How about the difference in mileage, since gas has just gone through the roof too! These both use premium I believe?
It's crazy out there - could probably sell my GX for close to what I bought it for! My Jeep would sell for almost twice what I bought it for just 5 years ago!
Went to look at 2 470s today. Both looked to be in good condition but they had some issues. Ruled out 1 due to a mismatched bumper and ruled out the other when I saw 3 airbag codes! My word of advice: stay far away from used car lots. Shop pre owned at new car dealers or private sale ONLY. It’s a shame cause I loved how that truck drove. Edit: ended up buying a higher mileage GX460 because it was being sold by a Lexus dealer. Too bad the good 470’s seem to be taken up already, cause I like the engine better.
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad I’ll add this to the original comment, but I ended up buying a 2014 GX460, mainly because it was being sold by a Lexus dealer. It did have 4 owners, but according to the service history the most recent owner took great care of it and the Lexus dealer fixed all of the issues before they sold it to me. It’s very hard to find a 470 like that, especially with todays market.
@@andybub45 Good for you! The market continues to be crazy for the Lexus GX and both are great platforms so I think you made a good decision! What are you planning to do to it?
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad Probably just going to add some TRD 4runner rims and some beefier tires for now. I'm not doing too much more to it as I don't do very serious overlanding or off-roading, but I plan to do some. Good thing is, from what I hear, these are very capable stock. I also forgot to mention that a majority of GX460s in the earlier years come with coil suspension stock, so there is no need to worry about air suspension. Mine has coil springs.
You're looking at numbers for an engine but you don't understand torque, car manufacturer dont often publish a torque curve with their vehicle marketing material to the so people don't always understand the 470 has greater torque output during lower RPM range then the 460. In fact the 470 leaps ahead of the 460 in a zero to 60 run. It's only at higher speeds where the 460 because of its higher RPM torque advantage pulls ahead.

@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad components of the rear dynamic air suspension like the pump and seals would fail and also there was lots of sway and lean with the KDSS suspension system on the 470 which was later changed to function better on the 460 this reduced the sway and lean when turning. On the 470 you would turn left and basically feel like your tipping over to the right. It was pretty pronounced…the 470 also had timing belt issues and that’s why the 460 changed to a timing chain. Generally speaking the 470 was super reliable and great it’s just not as great as a 460. If your buying an old beater to go bash against the rocks the 470 is perfect for that bc of approach angles but if your buying a car you want to keep and drive long term (not just treat as a rock truck) then get a 460… plus the new infotainment system in the 2022 is so much better… rumor has it this is the last year for the legendary V8… both the GX460 and the Toyota 4Runner will be going to a 4/6cyl turbo/hybrid setup which is going to never be as reliable.
cracked manifolds are an issue with this motor also. after you change those out $2k later the motor really wakes up and i have seen by other owners that the gas mileage gets better those Doug Thorley headers.
I wish I had answers before I make my decision today. But I'm buying one or the other. I'm still undecided even after this video. And yes, COVID prices are high. 2007 GX470 108,000 miles for $12,500 or 2010 GX460 115,000 miles $21,500 with taxes out the door... What do I do?!?!
I bought a 2006 gx470 with 180k miles for 11k but is super clean and I checked all the regular schedule maintenance was done on time at a Lexus dealership. I was thinking GX 460 should be better in term of new innovation to be added to it to replace the GX 470, but am surprised gx470 is the best base on the features explain. Then my question is why is GX 460 very expensive to compare with GX 470
Gx470 has the legendary 2uzfe v8 which can easily be turned into a fire breathing beast with a supercharger or turbo. Of course with upgraded pistons and connecting rods.
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad reliability isn't really gonna be the same, with forced induction, especially with boost levels above 10psi. No engine with stock internals will survive higher than stock, boost levels for too LONG lol, that's just the way it goes. The 2uzfe in the gx470 already has good torque, so adding forced induction, will help those numbers jump alot, of course with the right tuning.
The GX470 and GX460 have about the same ride - the difference is really between whether you get the standard suspension or the upgraded one with air bags. Both the GX470 and GX460 offer the air bag suspension. The air bag suspension allows you to adjust the stiffness of the rear air bags from comfort to sport. Keep in mind that the air bags make it more difficult to lift your GX since the air bags limit travel.
No matter which I got- I'd add LOCKERS, spre carrier, winchbumper, armor, extra gas tank, double ARB air compressor mounted unter the front hood, and a few other odds and ends.
The ONLY thing I like better on the 460 is the Timing CHAIN.. instead of belt. otherwise- I like the 470 better.. because it DOES NOT have the fancy crap on it- and I like a STICK to change 4x4 action- not damn KNKOBS..
THAT BUTT UGLY front end is more than just an eyesore!!!! It's a big disadvantage on angle of approach etc. plus it's just BUTT UGLY... I could cut it at the skinniest point- and put one of the special bumpers on with winch- etc. that is made to fit that.. Stealth i think it's called... and more..
@@andybub45 I do NOT hate the 460- just wish they hadn't overdone the tech.. @@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad Also the back window opens independent of the rear tailgate on the 460. That was a big part of my decision as well as the other things mentioned here.

For all I have seen and how old the 470’s are getting already, my choice is clear the GX 460 in my opinion is the way to go. Question not addressed in the video...transmission...if I remember correctly, the 470 has a 5 speed and the 469 has a 6 speed. If so, that has been a huge difference in other vehicle I have driven.
Personally I think the 460 has that BUTT UGLY front end---and FAR too much"technology"-- too much computer shit to go WRONG..and it uses MORE GAS than the 470. Before anyone gets all pissed off- it's JUST my opinion.. but I wouldn't give you a 470 for a dozen 460s.. (unless I could sell them and buy my 470 again).
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad Wonder if it would be possible to chop that front end- about half way for a high offroad bumper and make it look right? other than that- it's not bad-- but I can't afford one of those anyway-- 470 I CAN.. barely.. :)
I had a 2008 470 and I currently have a 2019 460. I agree the 470 looks better stock. My 460 gets 5-6MPG more than my 470 did stock. I think it helps that the 460's pedal response is abysmal. A Pedal Commander will fix that, but I kind of like the relaxed driving manners. Other than the parking sensors and fans in the seats, there is sadly no more tech in my 460 than my 14 year old 470. In fact, the secondary air intake in the 470 is a royal pain to change compared to the 460 and you can get a 460 without the stupid air suspension; not to mention no timing belt in the 460 like in the 470... so there might be less "shit to go wrong" in a 460.

Thx Bro an excellent review much appreciated.
@@andybub45 went to see a 470 at Ken Shaw Lexus in Toronto & it was making a ticking noise so checking the oil it was totally empty. I asked the salesman yuan if we could add a litre of oil to see if the ticking stopped & he was stunned, no answer, duh, cost too much to do there so I’d have to get my own safety…., ya never buy a 470 from a Lexus dealer especially in gutless ripping off dickheads of Toronto.
WOW- THANK YOU for that.. I copied and saved it so I can discuss it further with my girl and help her see that's best.. THANK YOU.

Not, most, but all 460's were equipped with KDSS. I believe that you were thinking of the T4R, having KDSS optional.
Great comparison. Thank God, I still own my 470... Blast to drive.
Wish I still had my 470… kick myself for selling it!
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad lmao off it is…. So many decisions based off them. Thanks for the video!
Timing Chain>Timing Belt. My biggest issue with the GX 470 is almost every single one I have looked at needed the timing belt done. So it was immediately a huge repair I had to do right away. GX 460 seems like a better value right now. GX 470 are going through the roof.
I 100% agree with you there. I thought the average prices seemed low based on what I’ve heard from people looking/selling.
I think that is about to change- as all used vehicle prices are starting to fall again.. and about to crash soon. I know several dealers who are very concerned about getting stuck with stock..

Value increase of GX 470 says everything. Never seen so many uniques upgrades on IG
Either one is a great platform... if just using for overland/off road adventures I would go with the GX470!
AWSOME video!! Good luck finding either one on the market in this day and age.
Glad I got mine in 2018!
470 👌
Awesome job on this. Super helpful!
Thanks!
Awesome review. Thank you
Thanks!
Yeah you can upgrade GX460 as capable of a GX470 and its not that complicated but the all features and amenities that GX460 offer can’t do it in an older GX470. Also resale value wise GX460 will have better price than older ones. So you pay little bit extra but then you also get that back in the end.
You make a fine point
I don't PLAN on "reselling" mine-- might have myself buried in it!! ha.
Good to know.
Maybe, but also consider “fun to drive” factor in a lighter (450#) truck.
GX470 will run fine with 87 octane.
Regular gas
Thanks for a great comparison
Thanks for watching!
Yep - had my fair share of totally sketchy used car salesman. Some are good… lot’s aren’t.

Suspension issues on the 470. Better to get the more reliable 460 and put offroad bumper on it
What suspension issues?
Just for the 470 or both?
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad it’s the same motor. So both. Rust is the issue.
I wish I had answers before I make my decision today. But I'm buying one or the other. I'm still undecided even after this video. And yes, COVID prices are high.
2007 GX470 108,000 miles for $12,500 or
2010 GX460 115,000 miles $21,500 with taxes out the door...
What do I do?!?!
Tough one. My two cents (and assuming price is not the problem): if daily driver go with 460. If offroad toy go with 470.
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad thank you. That's where I'm headed now
I bought a 2006 gx470 with 180k miles for 11k but is super clean and I checked all the regular schedule maintenance was done on time at a Lexus dealership. Sadly I know the prices of these were probably between 7-8k at the most in the same condition pre Covid but I had to bite the bullet. I fell in love with it on the test drive. Even though it’s over 15 years old i still favor this over my 2015 accord
@@Elite_Employee I'm liking mine a lot. People may be able to tell my car is a little older but it has all the bells and whistles of any modern car. THANK YOU for the EXCELLENT comparison video-- what I always wanted to see. In MY opinion- 470 wins....better for offroad- more collectible since there are now fewer of them-- unique- simpler (not so much electroonic CRAP to teat up- that is mostly unneeded anyway). and more practical.. Simpler is always BETTER-- and the 460 has that damn BUTT UGLY front end.. that has to be CUT for offroad use.. I'd also rather REMOVE the third row seats completely- than just fold them down-- NO ONE needs 3 damn rows of seats..

Newer, more luxury features, perceived reliability, etc. they’ll go down now that the GX550 is coming out.

Yup.
Kdss should be a o for optional on your chart for the 470 and the 470 doesn't have HAC
Would you rather buy a 2007 gx470 with 102k miles or a 2011 gx460 with 106k miles both for 20k
Depends on use. If an overland rig only - GX470. If daily driver the GX460.
That might be so with the length another thing is the height 470 is taller bodied than the 460
Gx470 has the legendary 2uzfe v8 which can easily be turned into a fire breathing beast with a supercharger or turbo. Of course with upgraded pistons and connecting rods.
Agreed but then you get into the debate about whether adding turbo, supercharger reduces the reliability.
@@TXGX460OverlandandOffRoad reliability isn't really gonna be the same, with forced induction, especially with boost levels above 10psi. No engine with stock internals will survive higher than stock, boost levels for too LONG lol, that's just the way it goes.

Does GX470 have smoother ride quality than the GX460?
The GX470 and GX460 have about the same ride - the difference is really between whether you get the standard suspension or the upgraded one with air bags. Both the GX470 and GX460 offer the air bag suspension. The air bag suspension allows you to adjust the stiffness of the rear air bags from comfort to sport. Keep in mind that the air bags make it more difficult to lift your GX since the air bags limit travel.

How high can you lift the GX 460’with airbags and of course the front with the KDSS?

@@davidwayne9982 it can be done - several examples out there
I had a 2008 470 and I currently have a 2019 460.
