    Got to say I was going to say something because of your description. Fully loaded 2023 GX460 was not cheap! I actually did my own research and wheels and tires I put on hers were identical. She loves them and personally for me I’d do the same other than tires would be bigger.

    Well done! I especially like how you laid out your process of selection!
    Having used 33" KO2s on my 98 LX470, I am very impressed by them. They take all the abuse I can dish out and never flinch. They aren't that in mud since the blocks quickly fill up with mud and they effectively become slicks! But the same packing behavior works wonders in snow! Finally, they are a little slippery on ice, even more so than some all season tires!

    I'm on the same boat as you. We are long time hikers and recently had two kids (1 and 3 years old). So I bought a GX460 as well to scratch my itch for the outdoors. I actually bought a roof rack first as you did, it really opened up the back seats and carry additional useless stuff on the roof. Now I need wheels and tires. I'll most likely go with the 265/70/17 as well mainly because it will fit in the spare tire location and adding a swing out arm or a bumper seems to be an overkill, especially in my wallet. So thank you for re-confirming my doubts, really wanted the 285/70/17. I do want a lift but I don't think I would be doing any rock crawling anytime soon, maybe next year...Check out Ironman 4x4, they have some great products for GX460. And thanks for the video

    Love the humor and content! Although, on a GX470/GX460 stock suspension to fit 285/70/17 tires, no lift or a body mount chop is needed BUT trimming and fender modifications are necessary as you have mentioned. Keep the same size tires but instead lifted, no body mount chop is needed when your alignment for the casters are pushed forward (4+). A body mount chop is in order when you run crazy negative (-30 or more) offset wheel and tire size of 35"+ or equivalent. Just a friendly PSA.

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  3 роки тому +1

      I appreciate the additional detail. I just went off the GXOR tire wiki which I think was crowd sourced. I bought a BMC kit and then realized there's now way I'd need it. What are you running?

      @@WastingTimeInTheWoods Reading, asking questions, and researching is key.
      I'm on the GXOR fb group as well. I have a 2015 GX460 base. It's currently lifted on Dobinsons 3" IMS suspension lift with Apache upper control arms. Wheels are SCS Rays10 17x8.5 with -10 offset wrapped with 285/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. You can see my truck through my Instagram account: 15GX460.

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  3 роки тому

      @@yota22RE81 Looks good! I'm leaning toward the IMS myself. I'm thinking I'll go with the set that's gives you 1" with the factory springs and then maybe do a spring later on if I decide to add a bumper and/or winch. I assume you went with their 2" lift springs and the 1" lift struts? How does it ride on and off trail?

    • @yota22RE81
      @yota22RE81 3 роки тому +1

      @@WastingTimeInTheWoods the IMS system is a coil over type strut. So you can adjust the preload to your liking (to an extent). The springs are set to 3" and are the comfort coils while the rears are 2" medium coils. I don't have any plans to add bumpers down the line so that's the route I went. Dobinsons, like other brands will have entry level struts where the coil seat is already positioned and non adjustable, which I think is what you're referring to. Coil overs can give you more adjustability should you change out the coils to a firmer type for heavy gear down the road. And on road and offroad handling has greatly improved! Little firmer on the pavement but where it shines is offroad, responsive yet supple on hard bumpy roads. You won't be disappointed!

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  3 роки тому

      @@yota22RE81 I think they have two of the IMS coil overs that will work in addition to the entry level (yellow) you're talking about. Both IMS models have an adjustable spring perch but one is 1" higher before the preload. One is suitable for a 0"-2.5" lift depending on the spring and preload and the other is suitable for a 1"-3.5". With the second you can keep factory springs and get a 1" lift with no preload which is what I think I'll do. Maybe... : ) Great to hear they're preforming well for you. Solid video. Hilarious at points. Thanks for tips. Still confused on what will fit stock considering you went with 265 and it still rubbed. Did the cutting you did count as a body mount chop?

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  3 роки тому +1

      Glad you enjoyed it. The confusion comes from the various tire treads across manufacturers. While the overall size is the same between manufacturers, I believe the more aggressive tread, the more "squared off" the corners of the tire, which is where it rubs when you have the wheels turned 45 degrees. Worse in reverse due to the suspension sag. I think that's the main difference in rubbing results between tires of the same size from different manufacturers. BFG KO2's seem to be more square at the sidewall and rub a bit more as a result. I didn't do a body mount chop (yet). That Dremmel was just me working the running boards : ) I'm just clear of the body mounts with the 265's. I only rub a bit of plastic so there's no damage to the tires. I think the only reason I still rub is that my passenger spring is sagging bit. I have a .5" lean currently that I plan to address when I lift it and likely replace the springs. Good luck!

  • @shadowulf
    @shadowulf 3 роки тому

    All I have to say about the BFG A/T type tires is I will not run them.
    I've had them break loose in snowy/icy conditions too many times to trust them.
    On light vehicles (jeeps/small pickups) I run Goodyear duratracks, on bigger vehicles ( full size suvs and pickups) I run Cooper A/Ts.
    I know BFGs are the popular choice. But not tagging a guardrail or sliding off the road is more important to me than "being popular"

    I did a 2 inch Dobinsons suspension lift.
    My stock tires were 265/65/R17.
    I have also installed a 30mm wheel spacers for better stability.
    Now i want to get all terrain tires.
    Am confused whether I should stick with 265/65 or increase the tire size.
    Can you suggest the best tire size for me.
    Also I have heard increasing tire size decreases the pick up power and creates variations in speedometer and actual speeds..

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  2 роки тому

      Bigger tires mean it takes more torque to move and more power to stop. I stuck to 265/70/17's becuase that's the biggest that can fit in my spare underneath. You shouldn't have that problem as I think the Prado door supports at least a 33'. If I drove around town mostly and trailed it on the weekends, I'd stick to around the size you're looking at. That will keep it's stopping distance and road manners tame. Check out my favorite off-roading Aussie's take on it - ua-cam.com/video/jO6QYM59ANw/v-deo.html

    Your tire rub with that tire size is from changing your offset from +40 to 0. The sweet spot for FJ cruisers, Tacos, Gx460 is +15. Also, for the finish on those wheels never use wheel cleaner. It will etch or leave them looking permanently hazy. Finally, when you ask a manufacture “which wheels are best for my vehicle?”, well theirs of course. Lol

    Thanks. Have you had any adverse effects from using the tires? There’s people out there that claim heavy tires like BF Goodrich on SUV’s are a bad idea.

    How much space does the rear kdss bar need from the spare? I just got a spare mounted (Method 701 with BFG 265 70 R17) and there is only a couple of millimeters of clearance.

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  Рік тому +1

      Mine presses into the tire under suspension compression (with even compression, not flex). Doesn't really matter I don't think as long as you have clearance at ride height. I think it presses into the tire more under compression but the force on the end links are so much greater than the friction generated by the of the tire pressing into the KDSS bar, shouldn't bind... or really matter. Wheeled mine all weekend and never noticed my spare : )

      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  Рік тому

      I don’t regret not being able to carry a spare under the car. I don’t wheel hard so Im not the most credible source for tire size. I ran it up a steep hill a couple months ago and it used the atrac like crazy near the top (a real shorts checker). I thought maybe 33’s would have helped… then I realized I never hit the center locker which probably would have been a much bigger help over another 1.5” of tire.

    • @WastingTimeInTheWoods
      @WastingTimeInTheWoods  3 роки тому +2

      The ride quality around town is almost worth it alone. It's dramatically cushier, but I went to a 1" taller and wider tire (overall) too so that likely contributed. It's really capable with just the larger tires/smaller rims and super comfy so I'm in no rush to lift mine. If I didn't off road much, I'd look for a set of 5th gen 4 Runner take-offs. You can get a set of 4 near new TRD 17"s with 265/70/17ish tires for around $1250 on craigslist in my neighborhood. I paid twice that but got 5 and the method wheels which are a bit fancier. • @WastingTimeInTheWoods

      Thanks! Not sure but mine only rubs on the passenger side now and only in reverse. My passenger side has a .5” lean which I think is the issue (spring sag, not kdss). I plan to correct that when I lift it. If you don’t want to do any mods and run ko2’s I would go a half inch smaller overall that what I did.
