i know i'm extremely late to the party, but romhack creator here. literally i have no idea what i was doing making that secret world lmao, it really took until seeing this a couple months back to realize how bad it is. it's not even hidden very well either??? i really agree that it kinda brings down the rest of the hack, especially since the payoff for requiring jario is... nonexistant.
i feel like i did best with the graphics and new physics (but even then, most of the actual assembly coding was done by others), and i did ok-ish at best with level design, ignoring 4-4 and 5-1, though i feel like not including fake bowsers in the other 3 castle levels did sort of bring them down too. but the new concepts just... did not land, outside the whole no framerules thing.
tl;dr this hack is definitely mid-tier looking back on it, and the secret world sucked. note to self, never make another secret world because idk what i'm doing, lmao.
i'm working on another hack, which should be better than this, hopefully.
please bring back duigi

I think he just means that just level completion isn't framerule based.
We never get to see what happens after the timer counts down, but maybe it immediately ends the level after the timer hits 0 or after it raises the flag rather than waiting for a slow timer. The screen timer used for the black screen with the lives counter between levels is short enough to control with a fast timer anyway, which increments every frame.
Level completion timers and the length of the black screen were changed to be frame timers instead of framerule-based timers. Everything else is the same, so multi-coin blocks still operate as in the original game.
"Duigi is too obese to climb" I LAUGHED SO HARD AT THAT, HOW DID THEY PROGRAM THAT XD
Whenever duigi touches a climb metatile (flag or vine), it checks if it's a vine, and if so, doesn't set his state to climbing, and instead trips a flag. When this flag is tripped, it writes the message to the vram buffer and untrips the flag. The issue with writing to the vram buffer is that the messages location is fixed in the name table. That's why it just says "climb" in world 5. It writes it to its dedicated name table address, but the screen isn't scrolled there, so only some of the message shows up
This feels like an alternate universe version of Super Mario. Where everything is the exact same, just slightly different.

But actually, I just realized that Eario's treasured memory of getting the last coin of the multi-coin block after Mario got most of them works in game, it doesn't matter how many times Mario hit it, as long as he left before the time was up, there would be one coin left. Very cool!

I miss Brawl in the Family. I used to go on the website after school on the days new comics were posted, and even bought Tadpole Treble to support it. I wonder what Matthew Taranto’s doing now after having ended the comic.

Fun fact, it's doesn't say "Duigi is too obese to climb" it's says "Duigi is too obese climb", but actually it's because duigi is already op in beat world 5, the creator didn't want him to be op in the any% category too

Around 5:45, can you move to the right to land on the ledge as you fall into that coin room? This would make it like the first pipe in 4-1 on SML. Or is there an invisible block somewhere?
Mario doesn't accelerate fast enough in the air to reach the ledge. You'll notice this in the vanilla SMB1 speedruns in 1-1 as well
I've only just realised the title screen gives you a choice of playing as Jario or as Duigi, rather than 1-player or 2-player as per SMB. So it's a bit like SMB2 in this regard, except that it appears the choice is for the entire play of the game rather than for a single level at a time.
It's exactly like the original smb2 (released in Japan)

The physics for jario are the same as mario, and only the framerules for telling when to end the level were removed
