3:44 It’s crazy to me that after all these ROM hack Wednesdays, there still seems to be at least one weird oddity per video that you’ve never seen before playing SMB1
Damn, level designs actually pretty shnice here. Using the bouncy blocks to push you slightly upwards with leftward momentum turned right. Odd moving platforms. Insta kill spikes making one think about positioning where to kill enemies. And I actually really like how you need to make invisible blocks with Poison Mushrooms in them tangeable in order to progress, it's like a new enemy, real nice~
This is my favorite SMB Romhack I've seen him play yet for those reasons. It's a complete game, very refined and a decent difficulty level to it. The only thing I didn't like was the hidden pipe to progress, if there had been some type of hint on what to look out for it would have been a great execution of it as a puzzle though.
I'd at least have the wrong pipe keep you in that same room, causing you to look for something specifically in that room. I still don't think I'd _ever_ have found that. But really, this is still just the best level design in any of these I've seen.
tight jumps like small fire or power-up jumps are so relatively simple, yet they never fail to wow me. and that hidden pipe, dang!! it's a clever way to hide one, but I think it could've been put to better use if the reset pipe at the end took you back to the start of that room or the level scrolled slower or something. DEFINITELY would've felt better as a bonus pipe or something, but it's still such a cool way to hide a pipe regardless.
This is one of the better ROM hacks you've done. Challenging, but not frustrating. Creative, but not over the top. Only weird part is the stupid secret pipe that's super hard to find without any knowledge of it.
@Kosmic: I know that in FDS/NES Super mario bros. the lost levels even in the SNES version, if the vine disappear because you open a power-up that vine is still climb able, their is no way to know if it is the same in the original Super mario bros, since the power-up are not close enough to the vine, the only way to find out is to back clip into every block untill mario is push enough to the right side of the screen so he can hit the vine before the star power, the vine as to reach the top of the screen before it disapear to be able to make you climb all the way to the top.
3:44 Yeah, that happened to me the time I touched Super-Mega-Ultra-Death Spikes. I was so pissed, lol. I wonder what old hack also Super-Mega-Ultra-Death Spikes? 9:06 Ah, yes. I remember my first Poison Mushroom, lol.

Invisible blocks are now visible, but they are just an outline until you hit them The “blue” pipes now look even more gross than before Most of the new gameplay results in completely different levels You can be fire Mario without being big Mario but it kinda breaks when shooting fireballs Normal mushrooms and poison mushrooms have the same texture 4-4 in this ROM hack is a bit like 8-4 in the regular SMB1 where it’s sort of a maze, but not as confusing
Happy to be caught up on this series! Finishing binging it last night and was thinking, damn, now what do I watch? So I was pleased to see the notification! They’re really well put together plus Its super cool to see perhaps the world’s greatest SMB1/2J player attempt these. It’s a real value-add, haha. . Keep up the great work Kosmic!
Hey, Kosmic - have you ver thought about doing a countdown for Super Mario Bros. ROMhacks, like "Top 10 Underrated ROMhacks" or something? I think it'd be a nice idea.

I'm not even the one playing these rom hacks and even I'm sick of seeing that unused pole asset. It makes an annoying noise and is never really implemented in a way that seems fun.
Oh I didn't even think of that. So actually there's an "unused" object in smb1 code that is basically just a vine but doesn't have to come out of a block. That's what most of these hacks are using for the poles, etc. to climb on. The original tile for it is just the circles from the top of the flagpole. You can see it in the tankachi mario video!
i'm curious, how much harder would it be to beat these romhacks without fast accel? a few parts look much harder without it to me, but i'm not very experienced with smb1
Fast accel gets used in a lot of different ways i guess, i think you just mean doing a backwards jump right? Yeah several times in this hack you're like stuck on a block and need to jump up a wall. Could probably do it with no backwards jumps though
@@youtube.commentator I did not honestly expect Mario ripping that guy’s throat out to look so realistic, it’s amazing what they can do with 8-bits these days.

@@Kosmicd12 Could it have to do with the screen position? I noticed that there seemed to be more rightward launches when it was on the left side of the screen and vice versa
@@PatrickDavis28 i don't think so, then it would do some pretty unintuitive stuff at times. Also i think it went both directions while underground in a pipe where the screen doesn't move
@@Kosmicd12 Clearly, the bounce direction from those blocks is determined by the direction you are coming at the block from. If you come in from the right, you bounce back toward the right, and vice versa, regardless of where on the block you hit or what direction you're facing when you hit it. It just matters what side of the block on which the ground you were last touching was. Hopefully that's as clear as mud. This just goes for when you hit the top or bottom of the block. When you hit the sides, you're just flung away from the block, or so it seems. It'd be pretty hard to test that last assumption. You'd have to jump from, say, the right side of the block and somehow hit the left side of the block before hitting the ground. If it always works the way it works for the top and bottom, you'd be flung through the block, which would be weird. I'm not sure what the behavior is if you jump from directly above or below the block and then hit the top. I suspect it would then matter which side you swung around to get to the block, or maybe it would just bounce you straight up (or down).

The platform behaviour is rad
Kosmic: gets star so he doesn't die from firebar
Kosmic with star: dodges firebar perfectly
Then promptly jumps into spikes

A hack that is both technically cool and has good level design? That's rare!
Kosmic: 😖
Kosmic's mind: This was a mistake.
That is exactly the face I made lol
The Bucky O’Hare Red Planet intro music hit me with a wave of nostalgia. Good stuff.
That last castle looks like something someone would make in Mario maker with the long fire bars and crazy jumps.
