Damn, it must be weird reacting to and hearing a completely different interpretation of a song you wrote. Prefer the original though. Would of been more interesting hearing a version of Keep Your Hands Off Of My Woman! 🤣
Hello from South France *Kustin,*
Two quick things in passing:
The first, a guy who reacts to songs on his YT channel has a voice tone very similar to yours (Luke Sutcliffe). Well, he has a bit of a tendency to overplay his reactions, but when he normally deigns to speak, it's very similar.
The second (I don't know if you already knew this) *Jack Conte* the second sinthé (the bearded one) is an American musician and co-founder and CEO of Patreon. He's one half of the band *Pomplamoose,* along with his wife *Nataly Dawn* (this band plays many French songs' covers), co-leader of the band *Scary Pockets,* and leader of *the band Magaziine.*
Peace, folks. 😋☮
I just noticed that Tal Wilkenfeld is playing Bass, She was Jeff Beck's bass player for a few years.
More like Otters Pockets, who is Jack Cunti?
@JustinHawkinsRidesAgain - found you a few months ago and this has been the most enjoyable video so far! I love how positively encouraging & respectful you are of this band's cover.
As soon as Tal Wilkenfeld is on the bass it's always worth listening in a bit closer. That woman does great things on the bass.
Yeah, I pretty came here to say they had me at Tal Wilkenfeld.
I can't believe Justin didn't even acknowledge her presence only referring to her as a "session musician".
Tal Wilkenfeld is a bass godess
Yeah, I've only known her since she played with Jeff beck
oi mate we all can't know every bloody genius body who has ever picked up an instrument and played it well. She usually inhabits a much more sophisticated musical area quite far outside where he resides. Simple rock... derrrrrrrrrr @@michaelsmith2017
I love when a cover is actually a cover and not just the same song with one minor adjustment. They are a funky band. Two thumbs up!!
Thanks for bringing up my pet peeve. First, let me get this out of the way. Due to the new digital karaoke age, there should be a distinct difference between recording karaoke and actually performing a cover. Unless the musician is professionally (making money) performing a song, it should not be considered a cover. It should be should be considered karaoke. As for what you were saying about adding their own version, that is the definition of a cover song. If the song is performed exactly as the original, that is called a tribute. Unfortunately it all gets clumped under a cover.
@@Nopaants Spot on analysis. Your logic can also be applied to "live" performances as well.
worth noting that Jack Conte ( on the second synth ) is not only a fierce Muso but ALSO the founder and CEO of Patreon.
Dude gets around....:)
He is always so much fun to watch when he’s playing he’s always having a good time :)
and Pomplamoose
That guy is so talented, CEO of Patreon while being the synth player but also integral part of Pomplamoose and insanely good at editing and filming when having seen some of his UA-cam content. Absolutely insane bloke!
That guy looks SO damn happy every time he plays. I really love his vibe...just enjoying the hell out of life. Good for him!
Well, you mentioned the nice bass playing. What other is to expect if the bass is played by the fabulous Tal Wilkenfeld :-)
Overdrive is pretty much the opposite of what you think. It's to drop the revs for more comfortable high speed cruising. Never mind. The lyric still works. Hope your Dad kept the MG.
Yeah - what he described was turbo.
Yep, I had an MG with the switch. 4th gear is 1:1, where the wheel revs match the engine revs. Gears 1 to 3 are geared down so the wheels turn slower than the engine.
Overdrive was the precursor to 5th gear, and basically a whole other gearbox to gear UP so the wheels spin faster than the engine. Less power but faster to speed.
@mowogfpv7582 explanation fine, but couldn’t resist the opportunity to comment. I’m a musical idiot (lacking both education and talent) so hoping to absorb a little by osmosis in a comforting bath in the darkness.
Come shove me over the edge..
Yep I have one on my auto 4x4...... it's like a 6th gear, saves fuel, more economical, grandad mode.
Yeah, any transmission gear that it taller (numerically lower) than 1.00:1 is an “overdrive” gear.
Modern 8-10 speed automatic transmissions usually have 2-3 overdrive gears
Scary Pockets is a fun channel to follow. I love all the unique takes on so many songs they’ve got. The main members have several other project (Jack Conte has Pomplamoose, Ryan Lerman has Stories, together they have a channel Dead Wax).
Totally agree. Somany incredible guest musicians and so funky.
"These musicians are really good aren't they?"
Wait till he finds out they arrange and record it in like 4 hours 😅
Is that Jeff Beck's Bass Player? It looks just like her. It was a pleasure to watch you react to one of your own songs. That band is filled with amazing musicians.
Yes it's Tal.
Jeff Beck pops his head round the door and says "there's a little sweet shop on the edge of town"
I had to check the original video, but it sure looks like the amazing Tal Wilkenfeld! Keep up Justin.
That gal gets around.
Jeff Beck was Tal's guitarist LOL
I saw them live In DC a few months ago with the incomparable, David Ryan Harris. The Bass on this is Tal Wilkenfeld who you might know from Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's. Guests have included such diverse talents as, Joe Bonnamasa and John Scofield!
DRH! An amazing talent, and the nicest dude, too...
Oh, Justin needs to react to that vid of DRH where John Mayer sits in and the whole band is on fire and Isaiah Sharkey does an incredible solo as does the keys player.
ua-cam.com/video/CwAnLe4R4F0/v-deo.htmlsi=cvgUYTKSCBkwYOqe
@pmacfto Agree! "Yesterday Shutting Down" at Hotel Cafe late 2019, I think? So much talent squeezed onto that tiny stage (and some just off-stage, too...)
They got Tal to play bass on a cover of your song? That is a magnificent tribute, in itself!
She's done a few things with them now.
The bassist, Tal Wilkenfeld is a monster on bass! You should do some videos of her accomplishments. She's playing it safe for this song, but when you see her let loose, holy crap!
She has a great voice, but nothing beats how you do it❤
great voice it seems mariah carey before she married with a major sony capitan in the U.S. with a geriatric style
She sounds too much like all the rest of them that start out with that breathy, bumblebee vibrato. Too bad, all she needs is her own, unmistakable style and she could stand out from the rest.
@@mjklein the only thing is that there are thousands of perfect female voices and are never heard and she with an average voice did it without ever being heard
@@RUfromthe40s Well said. Seen that in the studio business for years.
@@RUfromthe40saverage voice? Are you nuts?
I always enjoy Scary Pockets' reworkings of hit songs. I wouldn't say every single one knocks it out of the park, but they are always always always tight. I enjoyed their version of Tears for Fears "Everyone Wants to Rule the World", with Cory Henry on organ and vocals. Inspiring.
Tal Wilkenfeld on bass!!!! ... She used to play with Jeff Beck. Shes also an amazing singer and songwriter!
Thanks I was wondering if that was her.
Oh!!! Thank you for the info. Most appreciated
I think some of the melody is a bit obscured sometimes in this cover but they still did great and they are super tight. One of the things I've always loved about this song is that there is always a melody, whether its Justin singing or the guitar or the bass. Every part is singable and catchy melody that sticks with you; every riff and solo, and vocal part.
Anything Tal Wilkenfeld touches ends up being amazing. Watching Jeff Beck's face light up during Tal's solo on Cause We Ended As Lovers live at Ronnie Scotts is something I go back to again and again.
You know you’ve written a great song went it translates so well to so many different genres.
At this rate of versions per day, "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" is going to surpass "Yesterday" as the most covered song in history according to Guiness World Records 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳...
But when a song is great, is obvious that there's the need to make covers of it! ❤️ nice one! 👍
What a luck, The Darkness in Cartagena...🎉🎉🎉
Hey Justin, I think it is the sign of a great song that it can be interpreted in different ways. Kudos to any vocalist who can pull this off, not an easy one to sing. Love scary pockets and as a fellow Aussie super proud of Tal, what an awesome muso killing it on the world stage!
The thing is, I really love the 3 solos the original song has in it. Nothing can compare to the badassness that they provide. Cheers!
I mean they rocked so hard they literally killed a space monster, can't get much better than that
I just prefer your version!!! Just re-watched the video and just love that craziness so much.
It is definitely a honor for a song to be covered, it means something to someone and gets it out there again in one way or another.
Kudo's all around!!!
Overdrive is just the largest gear in a vehicle meant to keep RPMs down at higher speeds.
The bassist is Tal Wilkenfeld, an Aussie musician who is quality! Check out her song Corner Painter, so good!
Justin, love your reactions. You’re very gracious and appreciative.
The overdrive on the MGB (i had an MBG-GT) was a switch, giving you a higher gear ratio on third and fourth gear
It's purpose was to lower revs and make cruising easier wasn't it? Kinda the exact opposite of what Justin meant as he thought it made the car quicker, like an F1 boost button. Still works in I Believe In A Thing Called Love as we could say that the Love mentioned in the song makes Justin's heart more efficient. Or something....?
Jack Conte - the bearded guy on keys with the excited facial expressions - is the co-founder of Patreon. (And has another band with his wife called Pamplemoose)
You just beat me to posting the same! I love Jack's energy when he's performing! Also, it's Pomplamoose. ;-)
Co- founder.
Everybody's under contract to mention Pimplemoose - you get the order with your birth certificate
🤣🤣🤣@@GizzyDillespee
I love the reference to Phil Collins' "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven" and the arrangement style featuring the Phenix Horns from EWF. It definitely has that same full up tempo feel.
I’m getting Whitney Houston I Wanna Dance with Somebody vibes on the chorus. Loving it.
That's a fun cover! She's got a fab voice and I like the synth solo (speaking of which, I like the demo version of Thing Called Love because there's a synth solo in it!)
I like the rule that you told for singing songs...simplicity.
Now THIS is what a cover should be. Taking the song and giving it a complete makeover where it sounds like a complete different animal.
The bass player is Tal Wilkinson, who first came to prominence in Jeff Beck's band. To see her strut her stuff watch her play with Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scott's (available right here on the Tube of You if it hasn't been erased by copyright erosion). She is GREAT!
* Tal Wilkenfeld
@@tubecated_development Thank you!
You KNOW you're watching / listening to something special when the involuntary giggles start! Lol. *THAT'S* when you know!! Great stuff!!! Thank you for sharing!!!❤
Scary Pockets is great, that whole crew is really cool. I think Jack Conte is the only CEO out there who also plays really freakin' cool music.
I knew I'd hard that name before - the Patreon guy and Dead Wax. Thanks.
Also, not that it really matters but "overdrive" in that context is referring to the gear ratio in the transmission. In lower gears like 1st, the power gear is smaller than the drive gear, and as you shift you work your way up to a 1:1 ratio. Overdrive, if your car has it, is when you go beyond 1:1 ratio.
Always fun to watch you react to covers of your own song. Overdrive, typically, is a set of gears that increases helps you go faster. Sometimes it's a second gearbox that's behind the transmission that can be activated electronically. Thought you'd like to know!
In my humble opinion, you are in fact highly deserving of great praise to have one of your songs covered by Scary Pockets. Your song, of course, is brilliant. And Scary Pockets is brilliant. Most of their other covers are just wonderful; and it all appears to be done in a sprit of pure fun and great musicianship. Congrats to you! I’ve been following them for a some time now and they never disappoint. How’d you like Tal Wilkenfeld in your vid? She’s one of the best bassists on the planet :-). Check out the tune they did about 4 months ago (Like a Prayer) featuring Joe Bonamassa on guitar. So sweet.
I was wondering if you were going to get to this one. That's Tai Wakenfield on bass - child prodigy who played with Jeff Beck for years.
_Love Is Only A Feeling_ was my first *The Darkness* song I heard. I was at a Sheetz convenience store and thought, "Wow, what a cool 80's song! How did I miss this?" Eventually I installed SoundHound on my phone and discovered it was from 2003 and is the best retro sound in a song ever. I was so saddened in 1994 when the last gasp of 80's style disappeared from the radio.
Thank you for this. Growing up in the mid-west in the U.S. I never had the opportunity to discover your music. I'm enjoying discovering your music and how you have influence so many people. Just another new fan that wanted to say thank you for great music then and now.
Scary Pockets has worked with the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Bahamas. MonoNeon (bassist) to name a few. It might not be the funk you know, but they've churned out some incredible covers.
Scary Pockets has been my favorite cover band since I discovered them 5 or 6 years ago! Jack and Company are Un-REAL!!! ☮❤🎶
Louis Cole is often featured on drums in Scary Pockets offerings. I have to say I'm disappointed that he was not featured here. I know you would have absolutely loved that. Cheers!
Freakin fun man, I went and checked out your original too and it was a blast. Wishing I saw you live back then. Cheers from Aus
Arrangement was incredible and I love how distant it was from the original. But definitely getting more disco vibes than funk!! Regardless, very talented set of people. Drummer giving everything he had at the end lol
Not my thing but….. I always appreciate an attempt to cover a song in a different way rather than just a wedding band cover
Agreed. A cover should try to bring something new to the table.
I agree. I’ve heard much better covers. It has nothing to do with the fact that it’s not my thing. It’s trying too hard to do its own thing and it’s not working. The original song is simple and this is way too overdone and makes it look like they’re trying too hard to be impressive. The musicians and singer are great, but the arrangement and stylistic decisions are really not appropriate or appealing for this song. The arrangement reminds me of songs from the broadway show Rent. I also don’t like the lyric changes.
I commend them for trying something different for an amazing song, but you really have to bring it AND choose a suitable song that works for poshing it up if you’re going to drastically depart from a simple and incredible classic hit as much as this does.
Agreed, whats the point of doing a cover if you are gonna keep it the way it is? Presuming you are not a cover band.
Scary pockets is a 50-50 proposition . Pattern owner basically pumped a shitload of money into advertising to get followers . They are hit and miss , some great renditions and some well just say doesn’t do the original justice .
@@MashaT22totally trying to hard to be themselves … may as well just be ass kissers
Larry Goldings on synths is a great choice. He's an incredible Hammond organ player. One of the top players. Seen him at the Berkeley Jazz Festival that I played years ago. He was with Michael Brecker on sax, He was on the organ and piano, and a the great drummer Adam Nussbaum. That was an incredible show. He was on piano and the group played Monk's Round Midnight. So much emotion in it. Scary Pockets is an incredibly talented group. Great cover. Thank you for sharing your perspective of them covering your tune!
Wow, she's got a great voice.
Overdrive is basically a 'higher' gear or a cruising gear for the highway. So it's not gonna make you go 'faster' but it can increase top speed. like stomping the gas in 6th vs stomping the gas in 4th...
The Bassist has played with Jeff Beck.
The amazing Tal Winkenfeld. I was disappointed that Justin didn't recognize her 😞
@@RaúlCabezalíYou and me both. She is quite the musician. I’m sure he knows who she is though.
@@RaúlCabezalíYeah, THAT is what matters...lol.
@@matcoffidis1135 To me it matters just enough for Justin to mention her name at least.
@@RaúlCabezalí But you already did....
I'm digging the Death Records t-shirt. "Phantom of the Paradise" is such a great &weird movie...and it came out a year before The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
she just nailed it and having a great time! And Tal in for the bass
Those musicians are exactly as you classified them: Elite.
That drummer…..
I thought that they did an incredible job in creating this interpretation of this song. Next level stuff.
Excellent cover. It still has the essence of the original. Which is clearly why it's excellent 🤣
On a side-note. She has a very good voice and control.
On old land rovers 'overdrive' was an extra half a gear. It turned 4 gears into 8 (plus with the low ratio it turned 8 gears into 16!)
Not sure if that goes for the MG also.
Love watching YOU watching them! Your song is JUST that good my guy!! Even people who I play it for who have never heard of you guys get HOOKED!😁😁😁😁😁
The overdrive button in an mgb engages cruising efficiency mode. Efficiency Rocks!
489,000❤love to get to 500,000 before Christmas 🎄
I told it!
Overdrive, for what it's worth, is like having an additional (higher) gear in the transmission. Turn it on and the engine will run a bit slower for the same road speed. In an MGB, it probably actually lowers the top speed, but it makes the engine less busy and perhaps a bit more economical.
She has a great voice and does a great job here. As a whole its definitely different and took me off guard for a minute.
Scary pockets rock!!! Can listen to their playlists for days. So awesome they did a cover!
Her voice is beautiful ❤️
Holy moly! That's Tal Wilkenfeld on bass. If SHE is covering your song, that surely means something.......very cool.
I do love Dave's humbleness. Makes me wonder if it was always the case 😂 😉
Mgb electronic overdrive activates a highway gear in the gearbox to lower the RPM on at highway speeds ! In case anyone cared
The version is ok. But the original is just best! I love the song! Makes me smile and jump/dance 🖤
I'm not a huge fan of over-runs when singing but this version is so cool and she has a great voice for it too! :D
I mean they did a great job on this… really great job.
But there is no improving the original… no way
Amazing homage done with this cover though… incredibly talented people
3m 58s: Phil Collins - Something Happened On The Way To Heaven from the ..But Seriously album. My favourite album of all time.
Awesome! Go Justin! Super fun reaction.
Tal Wilkenfeld on bass!! And the beard keyboard player is the phenomenal Jack Conte of Pomplamoose and founder of Patreon! Now that is interesting!! Good cover that should be a single!
The *second* I heard that synth, I knew Jack Conte was involved. He is an insane musician and perhaps one of the pioneers of creative UA-cam covers. If you liked this, you absolutely need to check out anything he's done with his project Pomplamoose in the early YT days. It's not just the covers themselves - do yourself a favor and watch Nature Boy right this second - but also somewhat pioneered the VideoSong genre. Just... yeah. Great stuff.
Tal Wilkenfeld is great! I saw her with Jeff Beck, at a concert along with Tyler Bryant, and ZZ Top in 2015.
No copyright issues tonight 😉
I recall hating the song when I was younger. But it recently came up on Pandora and here I am now listening to covers of it. Now that I have matured, great song! Brings me back to simpler times.
is that, is that prince william on synth?
Ha, I came to the comments specifically to say that too! 🤣
i like groups/artist that not only covers beloved songs but give them a whole new soul or personality. Post modern jukebox is good in doing that too beside the scary pockets but I like the Melodicka Bros too.
Ahh I'm so glad you reacted to this! No disrespect to Justin or the scary pockets guys, but I'd love to hear Brooke sing the original arrangement with the guitar solos and all the rest of it. Do I need to sacrifice a goat to the rock gods to make that happen...or whatever the vegan equivalent is...maybe a large butternut squash? ❤
Overdrive in an automotive sense is actually a highway gear that is basically useless for acceleration but makes the engine stay close to the most efficient part of the rev range at high speed.
Basically, much like the "Turbo" button on older PCs would actually make the computer run slower, Overdrive actually makes it difficult if not impossible to go faster.
I'm torn. On the one hand they're obviously incredible musicians doing a really complex and talented cover of this song. On the other hand the beauty of this song was always the simplicity. It hits the chords you expect. It hits the high notes you expect. It's got the predictable classic guitar solo you expect. (I say all this with genuine appreciation that it does that). When you take away some of those things that arguably make the song what it was (is?) then I'm not sure it hits the same.
That said, Scary Pockets are awesome and definitely go check out other stuff they've done, also check out 'Stories' - comes from the same wider pool of people (that effectively all stem from Pomplamoose and Jack Conte, lets be honest) but focuses more on acoustic versions of songs, and is *chefs kiss*.
A lot of them also come over from Ryan Lerman (the guitarist here) and Vulfpeck.
Scary Pockets is led by Conte and Lerman, as opposed to Pomplamoose which is Jack Conte and his wife Nataly Dawn.
I’ve seen Scary Pockets live at The Hotel Cafe in Hollywood - absolutely brilliant!
Scary Pockets is just as good live!! It’s worth checking out the other bands/channels of Jack and Ryan: Pomplamoose and Stories.
Worth noting that Ryan is also a frequent Vulfpeck collaborator and has written a bunch of their best tunes. LAX, Half of the Way, Baby I Don't Know, Lonely Town, etc.
A overdrive is an external gear mounted at the rear of your fathers mgbgt gearbox, thing of it as a bolt on 5th gear operated electrically by a switch on the dash or gearstick. 😎
If you don’t make a cover your own then there’s no point. However I still prefer the original because I think is shockingly overdone.
Not to burst any bubbles but I believe the vocal acrobatics are less the vocalist really into the song and more the vocalist really into their own voice ... but what do I know. It's good/bad to see Tal Wilkenfeld on bass but I guess a session gig is a session gig. I like guitars so the synth arrangement sounded like crappy casios to me but again ... what do I know. I do think Tal was killing the bass but I would suspect that woman puts 1000% into everything she does!
It’s not every day that the CEO of a company as successful as Patreon covers your song.
Is that Tal Wilkenfeld on bass? She would make a great guest on your show. She’s played with Jeff Beck and Prince.
Motown
Wow! Tal Wilkenfeld from, Jeff Beck fame, on bass. ...cool.
It’s incredible how much talent was employed to ruin this great song.
That has to be the best cover of this song! I want to hear more from them all, now. Such fabulous musicians and singer! Thanks for looking at this version, Justin.
F***ing insane pretty much describes it well. Maybe this is again something that all the new generation kids love, same way they would love a Nirvana funk version of Smells like Teen Spirit played on a clarinet mixed with bongos. Since im older than 20, your original is a lightyear away from that cover. They might be alright or whatever, but not with this cover..no no... no.
Is that Tal Wilkenfeld? She's one of the best bass players around. I wish they had turned up the bass.
Yeah doesn’t do anything for me personally.
Overdrive is actually an extra gear that allows your engine to rev lower at high speed and save on fuel.
Excessive wailing.
Blacks always ruin everything and overdo it. They should kick her out.
Just happened to catch this and right at the start I thought "Is that a baby Tal ?". Then I saw the signature Tal Bass Face, and knew it was. You've been honoured Justin, and not just in this cover (which is excellent...).
She does that Mariah Carey warbly voice nonsense 👎
Good vocalist but not for me
overdrive is a secondary gearbox which basically gives more gears.
I believe that is what can best be described as "over egging the pudding". Annoying
You must be a pleasure to be around, thanks for your input 👍
