Today, I want to cover the fascinating benefits of olive oil.
Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. Olive oil also has incredible effects on certain parts of the body, including:
    • The cardiovascular system
    • The nerves and brain
    • The skin
    • The eyes
Olive oil is a good source of healthy fats and contains vitamins E and K1. However, the real benefits of olive oil occur because of a group of plant chemicals called polyphenols.
Polyphenols produce many amazing effects on the body, like helping to prevent complications from chronic disease and oxidative stress.
It’s crucial to get real olive oil that’s organic. This is because glyphosate (an herbicide) blocks a plant’s ability to produce amino acids and polyphenols. Glyphosate can also lead to a myriad of other health concerns.
Keep in mind that salads contain polyphenols and other phytonutrients. Plus, adding olive oil to salads helps increase the absorption of phytonutrients.

Make sure your olive oil is cold pressed or first pressed olive oil, which means it is not processed or destroyed by the heat processing. Make sure it is organic, it is made in Italy or the Mediterranean, and that it doesn't have any excipients and that it is pure, unadulterated olive oil. Make sure it's a slight green in color. I’m in the UK and tried this olive oil that you showed in this video and in an older video a few months back. It’s honestly the most tasty quality olive oil I’ve had, changes the taste of a normal salad. I’m sure there are some other great ones locally in Italy, Spain and Portugal too and maybe cheaper as not imported to the UK.
This one lasted a while but is £20 a bottle! It’s worth it for me but I can imagine some people can’t afford it 😢 . I don’t remember it saying Organic on the bottle but I will check when I next buy it. Sometimes it’s organic but the certificate to get organic is so expensive that they don’t bother. Amazing product thanks for mentioning it, as there are so many brands.

It doesn't always hurt or create a prickly feeling in the back of your throat it depends on the variety of the of olive itself. this one you refer to is a mix of two varieties Frantoio and Moraioto. One being stronger than the other, they are blended but both are very fruity which creates the itch to the throat. They can be fruity, bitter or soft in flavor and used for different things, frying, salads, or special to drizzle on plates at the end. Italy has so many varieties as does Spain and Greece. To tell people it just has to be prickly to get a good oil is not true.

I am afraid it is not so simple - while that "throat test" may apply to some kinds of olive oil typicalyl produced in italy, in fact olive oil can be a varied as wine - depending on the olives used, their ripeness when picked, the way the olives are handled and how fast they are processed etc etc. different countries also prefer different tastes of olive oil. An "extra vergine" oil made from over-ripe olives which spent three days on a lorry will have much less quality than if the same olives were picked while still green, cooled and processed immediately.
As a rule of thumb, spanish, portuguese and greek olive oils are usually milder, as they thend to harvest the olives later when they are ripe and black, which gives good olive oil an almost buttery, warm, mild taste, and this oil can usually be used well for cooking, whereas the french and Italians like a more "grassy" taste which comes from harvesting the olives early just before they become ripe, and they are better used for salads, pestos and other cold or mildly wearm food. There are also different kinds of olives for oil (and lets not forget the other olive varieties grown for eating) each with their own taste. Unfiltered oil from green olives must be used quickly, for cold dishes only and is rarely available, but once you tried it, ideally just with a slice of that italian bread and with some seasalt, you never go back. Also, Algeria, Tunisia, but also the countries of the levante, they all produce lots of olives and there are more and more small producers sticking to quality - they are just more difficult to find. OTOH, Italy produces and exports much much more "italien olive oil" than the olive trees there are able to produce - because it is sufficient for an olive oil to be "italian" if the olives, sometimes shipped for days across the mediterranean sea, are only pressed in Italy. The same may happen in Spain and other countries. Therefore, if you have the chance to buy verified locally produced olive oil, absolutely do so, and do not hesitate to buy that 5l or 10l canister - you will use it, and/or can share with friends and family. I also hear that in california, some excellent olive oil is available, but it may be the exception, not the rule.

Great video Dr. Berg! Nice to see another EVOO advocate stress that there is a real difference between the grocery store evoo and the real, pure evoo.
However, please don't stress on the itchy/prickly feeling in the throat. Not everyone experiences this, and, the variety of the olive used is another major factor. Arbequina olives are some of, if not the mildest. They're usually more fruity and buttery. The polyphenol count on the Arbequina olive will be lower than say a Koroneiki olive. Koroneiki olives tend to be stronger in flavour, more robust, grassy, herby, with a peppery undertone or finish, and a much higher polyphenol count naturally. Also, each harvest will have a different taste and polyphenol count due to many contributing factors - weather, water, oil content in the olive, when it was picked vs when it was pressed, etc.
I've had customers sample Arbequina and cough, and then I've had customers who don't feel a thing. Plus, once you start to consume a proper and true EVOO, the burn/itch/cough will go away.
Another huge thing to look for is a harvest and/or bottle date. Olives are harvested once a year. In Northern California its late October, early to mid November. In Australia it will be earlier in the year as their summers are in our winters.
Also, don't underestimate EVOO grown and produced in Northern California, EVOO produced overseas can be incredible, but not always an option due to cost for most people. Some of the multigenerational family groves there produce some absolutely amazing, delicious, pure, locally, nationally, and internationally awarded EVOO. A lot of the EVOO produced there is also certified pure through a council that has rigid and strict requirements for certification. If you're interested in more information, let me know!

I do buy organic olive oil directly from italy and a small family farm and agree on the burning spicy sensation, mine is really spicey. At least some itching when its a good olive oil high in polyphenols. If you care less about taste but more about health benefits then I would pay attention to its spiciness since thats an indicator that the olive oil has high levels of polyphenols which are beneficial and what you want

May I suggest you buy her a bottle of really good olive oil and let her dip a slice of ciabatta in it, adding a dash of sea salt - much more fun and tastier than those capsules. Buy small bottles, and join her, so you two can go through the many different kinds of olive oil and understand the different taste e.g. of an italian oil for salads and a greek oil for cooking. However, the "greener" the olive (grassy taste), the more polyphenols it will have.

Dr. Berg I bought a bottle of the olive you recommend. It not only came in a dark GLASS bottle but was shipped in a box. It DOES taste different! VERY peppery finish. I can eat olive oil with food and have no problems. This morning I ingested 2 tablespoons on an empty stomach. It is cleaning me out, like a laxative, but also I have a lot of nausea. I took ginger root and Pepto but the nausea continues. I used a tablespoon measuring spoon.
Did I take took much or is this just my body not being used to this?

One of the many blessings of living in San Diego is that I'm able to get local olive oil. The olives are grown and pressed just a 45-minute drive away (30 minutes in the Tesla) by a company called, Temecula Olive Oil. They have a few different varieties (and degrees of ripeness) you can choose from, and they all taste Heavenly. Pricey, yes, at $25 for a 12-ounce dark bottle, but so well worth it.

It's the best olive oil you can have and the most reputable in Greece. I also have the impression that olives, before they go under the procedure to remove their bitter taste, are richer in polyphenols than olive oil.

Unique small regional labels are the way to go.

The itchiness in the throat comes from an old olive oil that is usually over 12 months. they even have a separate name for it where they have been using their own produced olive oil for thousands of years. New olive oil, the first few weeks, is more green and bitter. Then turns yellow and loses bitterness and very smooth. When it is old, it turn a little darker and develops the throat itchiness.
