What is extraordinary is that Madonna literally went from being a flibbertigibbet at the start of her career to this goddess of spiritual enlightenment with Ray of Light - an incredible evolution as a woman, mother and artist. Rarely seen in public view. How anyone can malign her contribution to popular culture is mindboggling to me. So happy that you both enjoyed this exceptional performance!
I've seen this performance many times over the years, but it still gives me chills. Everyone in that room was jumping out of their seats, and Madonna sounded absolutely fantastic 👏
This was her first appearance on American television after Evita and after giving birth to Lourdes. Everyone was curious about what she would come up with since we were living in an era without internet as it is today. The album had been out for nearly 3 months and Madonna had been in a press tour around Europe, so flying back to the USA she did this Oprah interview and blew everyone’s socks off!
This performance is incredible. Her energy, both in terms of being energetic in the physical sense, but also the energy she is radiating in a spiritual sense is just palpable.
Hands down one of her best live performances. Not only getting Oprah dancing but THE ENTIRE AUDIENCE. I hope you watch the other performance of "Little Star' that she also performed on Oprah that day.
I so remember this! I have the original broadcast on a VHS tape in my archives. The energy there! So glad you guys reacted and enjoyed it. Orpah doing her dance in her metallic Issey Miyake Spring/Summer 1998 dress. What an era the late 1990s was. I truly MISS is it. Sigh....
I love these early Ray of Light album performances because she just spend sooooo much time honing her vocal skills though out the entire Evita filming process.
My favorite moment of this performance is when she belts that super high note followed by a laughter of joy. It’s almost like she’s both in ecstasy and disbelief for pulling off that vocal feat.
This was must see TV at the time. I ran home from work to watch and I just couldn’t stop re-watching. I still see new things every time I watch this amazing live performance. Killed it with the growl and just so good to see her answer the critics of her live vocals. And she was obviously having such a great time. Again ladies, the hair though 😍
Love it. Ok so for a different spin on the song. She performs this in The Confessions Tour playing guitar are had the whole stadium literally jumping. I thought the stadium would fall it was so amazing! Great Reaction!!!
I share your glee and awe in reacting to this ROL performance-it brought the house down!! And you’re so right, ROL is a challenging piece to sing and not many celeb artists have dared to cover it…even if they try, it’s hard to capture the vibe that Madonna projects in this song…and some critics still dare to say that she can’t sing-and I say-yeah, right, go try and sing ROL!! I also share with you a fascination with her classic, Renaissance look/hair style during this era-it’s so beautiful and radiant, and with Madonna I didn’t believe this was just some random choice, so I did a bit more research. In an interview she was asked what the influence was for her look/hair fashion in this Frozen/ROL era, and she replied…”it’s Pre-Raphaelite..”. The Pre-Raphaelite art movement was started in 1848 by a group of English/Victorian era painters renowned for portraying women in noble, idyllic poses with spiritual, mystical and chivalric themes, in beautiful fashion with flowing, swirling golden/ginger hair. The Pre-Raphaelites were inspired by pre- and early Italian Renaissance art of the 14th and 15th centuries particularly the works of Florentine master Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510). They disdained the high Renaissance period (16th century) art of Raphael that had influenced many artists then that was promoted by the National Gallery in London-hence their name Pre-Raphaelites. It’s not lost on Madonna that she considered the ROL era in her career as a rebirth and reawakening of both her artistry and wisdom/spirituality much like what the Renaissance period(14th to 17th centuries) meant in Western history and culture coming out from the Dark Ages of the medieval era that led into the 18th century Age of Enlightenment. Similarly, ginger hair color and different shades of it, in Western culture, traditionally has…”symbolized passion, energy, and boldness..it’s often interpreted as a sign of liveliness, determination and a strong form of self-expression, of rebellion and individuality..”. With Madonna nothing is ever random, the depth and richness of her artistry never ceases to amaze! It’s so good, to see you both glowing in good health and joy again.❤😊
Aww, thank you - You're very kind! ❤️❤️ "It’s not lost on Madonna that she considered the ROL era in her career as a rebirth and reawakening of both her artistry and wisdom/spirituality much like what the Renaissance period(14th to 17th centuries) meant in Western history and culture coming out from the Dark Ages of the medieval era that led into the 18th century Age of Enlightenment." I saw in the comments how many recommend this performance. Now you see why! This song always gets the crowd on their feet. Oprah too! Madonna’s on fire here. Love this. Great review ladies! Loved your reaction! Have a lovely day. ♥️
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️ And yes, we can definitely see why this was so highly recommended - What a phenomenal performance! Have a wonderful evening! ❤️
This is such a great uplifting and almost unhuman performance, it always gives me chills! Especially the high note/scream with the laugh at the end. OMG! 🙌 #iconic
she was still glowing pure motherhood and her exuberance was nothing short of ethereal. the energy in the audience was cosmic .. I remember how the energy affected me during this performance. my heart was filled with pure happiness. for me the Ray of Light era is similar to the Like a Prayer era. both deeply personal albums .. one dealing with childhood and a broken marriage .. the other getting to know Madonna as a mother.
Great performance I remember being blown away by her energy and vocals back in the days. She killed it. Also during this show she performed a very beautiful version of Little Star. You have to see it .She's incredible. By the way Thanks for your always enthousiastic reactions.
Listening to this song in 1998 was just mind blowing. There was nothing like it and listening to those Madonna’s vocals were just incredible. I feel that audience. That was actually me when I was 16 blasting to this amazing track. The energy was just out of this world.
This performance is everything - just her and a band and she smashes it! Pure perfection! Thanks for your reaction - would be great to watch the interview that follows this performance 😊
She performed little star live as well which is well worth a listen. She sounded beautiful and it lifted the song to another level. And thank you both, I love and look forward to your Madonna reactions and journey. You are both very watchable
Ladies…. Your Joy brings Me Joy!!!!!!!!!!!! So glad you enjoyed it. There are 2 Magnum Opus in Madonna’s career ….. the Like A Prayer Album and the Ray of Light album 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
What a energy! This performance always makes me get up and dance. And vocals of course are stunning! She has another great live performance of Ray of Light on "Live 8" concert. Please check it when you get to Madonna`s 2005s. Ladies, You are gorgeous as always! Can`t wait for your next reactions!
One of her best live TV performances. Hope there's a complete vid of the interview from this episode, one of her most candid, fun and relaxed convos and she became more comfortable with Oprah here than her first time.
Madonna performed this song for Oprah and her audience twice that day. After the first taping her manager, Guy Oseary, had her go back and do it again. When she came out the second time she said to the audience, “My manager said I have to do it again. That I can do it better.”. I think this, and of course the stellar performance, are the reasons why the audience is dancing HARD and the energy is through the roof and into orbit quicker than a ray of light! Please do watch Little Star from this same episode, you won’t regret it.
Wow - Thank you for sharing that story with us! ❤️❤️ Now we're even more jealous of that audience! We're planning to react to Little Star from Oprah as well - Looking forward to it! ❤️

The look of glee on your faces matches the energy she is putting off in that studio….later in the show she performs Little Star (a song she wrote for her daughter) and that is mind blowingly beautiful! Another awesome reaction, I truly feel like here, I’ve found the perfect venue to enjoy this amazing woman’s art! Thank you both! 👏🏼👏🏼🥰👏🏼👏🏼
Aww, thank you so much for being here - You're incredibly kind to us! ❤️ Can't wait to see Little Star from Oprah as well! Sending lots of love your way! ❤️
Hi Madonna also sang this song at MTV 98 with Shanti as an intro which is a Sanskrit song. That night she was accompanied on guitar by Lenny Kravitz and won 6 awards.
I'm happy you enjoyed it so much! It is one of her best performances ever! Great song and great energy. You hit the nail on the head. I love her look, attitude and energy during the Ray Of Light and Music eras.
Ahhh this one brings back memories! What a great live performance, she sounded amazing and the audience was so excited it was great!! Loved your reaction ladies! ❤ god I miss the 90s so much lol
hello, So glad you like it, yes this performance is incredible, extraordinary, this woman moves me just like your beautiful reactions. I started following you a while ago and I love it. much love from France.
This song is so hard to sing. Anyone should try it, the ones attempting to do it on tv talentshows all failed miserably. It goes so high up, its very challenging vocally, she did this so well live here. Amazing era, incredible album.
That was seriously fun to watch along with both of you! 💙 🕺 💃 I justed wanted to add that I think both of you would enjoy the entire Ray of Light album., but especially Brenda. ROL is one of her peek artistic statements.
Aww, thank you so much! ❤️❤️ We're going to do a deeper dive into the albums after we finish the singles discography and tours - Can't wait to hear the rest of tracks on ROL! ❤️
Hi My Favorite Two People In The World. Great reaction as usual. You both appeared exhausted at the end of the performance. I was too just watching your reaction! Love it. Definitely in my top 5 of her live performances. Also a great lively part of her celebration tour.
From the Ray Of Light era you should also react to Little Star (live Oprah), The Power Of Goodbye (VH1 Fashion Awards) and Nothing Really Matters (Grammy 1999).
This era was incredible and the good news is there’s even more amazing stuff coming up on your Madonna journey. Next era is the MUSIC era and I cannot wait to hear your opinions on the videos and lives & there’s also the tours ! So much to choose from. Music era is another biggie by the way; I would like to recommend to experience the song called : ‘paradise(not for me)’… Your mind will be blown …😊
Hello ladies again a great reaction,. Please react to Little Star from the same show. It's also on the Ray of light album. lot's of love from the Netherlands ❤❤❤
Amazing vocals , but she also did sang another song on this show back in 98. More of stripped back Ballard “little star” off ray of light Her vocals still just as strong , enjoy 🥰 ua-cam.com/video/MJKM1Zuvns8/v-deo.htmlsi=MCgNAIrcRK5KQfo_
It was a pre-recorded performance, you can see it at the part when she laughs (in the song), plus she never ever could sing those high notes (maybe at the Live Aid). And during the bridge part, she should have suffocated in such an intense performance (at the middle of the song, when she sings: "Zephyr in the sky at night, I wonder...")
One of her worst vocal performances. Evita really messed up her singing. But she will find her voice again around the year 2000 and she will sound better than ever from that year on. Meanwhile she will sing like this, with her voice completely misplaced. Specially at the 1998 MTV VMA's, that I'm sure you'll react to, she will sound very bad. But again, bear with her, she will sound amazing later on.
@@FindingMadonna Live 8 is way better. She is more comfortable and her voice sounds better when she’s comfortable. This song is not just about vocals btw.

Yes, she certainly blew their socks off!! Perfect in every way. ❤️❤️
Her hair was "Raphaelian" in this period. Joan Rivers commented on that to Madonna on the red carpet, and she said, You get it.😊
Love that! ❤️❤️

you should react to the Ray of Light version of The Confessions Tour, it is also amazing!!!
Can't wait to see it when we react to that tour - It sounds incredible! ❤️❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactions it is arguably her best tour for sure!
I told you! ❤
I never lie.
❤️❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactions The extensive vocal training from Evita really helped her.
Frozen drowned world tour please is amazing
I think they're doing the tours later
There’s another album to cover before the tour.
We'll definitely see that performance when we get to that tour - Looking forward to it! ❤️❤️
you should see the mtv performance -2 songs and a famous guitarist-guess who?
Is this the one with Lenny Kravitz? Sounds like an amazing performance! ❤️❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactions yesss, she looks so different there, the song shanti is great....
Amazing vocals , but she also did sang another song on this show back in 98. More of stripped back Ballard “little star” off ray of light
Her vocals still just as strong , enjoy 🥰

Yes! We're going to react to Little Star from Oprah as well. Thank you for the link! ❤️❤️
@@OurAnxiousReactions oh great . Loving your Madonna journey .

I prefer the live version of this song that she did for Live 8 and the Drowned World Tour. For me they are better than this one! Personal opinion 😂
Live 8 wasn't as good vocally.
@@FindingMadonna Live 8 is way better. She is more comfortable and her voice sounds better when she’s comfortable. This song is not just about vocals btw.
@@Arnoldegolive 8 good but I prefer this one cause she doesn’t use backing singers as much
@@Arnoldego Well, that screech she does toward the end is terrible. But it was better than the VMA performance, that's for sure.
