How to fish the Estuary’s (catch & clean)

  • G'day Fisho's, this week I get back to the basics after being tasked to catch dinner in an estuary by the legends at BCF Australia. Having not fished like that in years I didn't want to leave anything to chance. So I stocked up on fresh local bait and headed out with my old man to see what I could find! Luckily for us we didn't have to wait long!
Check out all the gear I used at www.bcf.com.au/

Back to basics mate, love it !!! nothing better than fishing with the man that taught you , I can`t do that as the old man passed away over 10 years ago but I`ve passed on that knowledge to my 3 and I love watching them put that into practice. I also love that sometimes I don`t have to drive the car or the boat..... time for Dad to have a beer !!!!

What you called a trailer looked like what we call a bluefish up here in Rhode island USA.....
If it's got a row of razor sharp teeth that you can't see until you pull it's lip down that can literally cut a live 12 to 16 inch manhaydan in half with a single hit then I'm sure it's the same fish.....
When they get grown out here (24" and up) all a bluefish is, is mussel, teeth and attitude and will take one of your fingers off as quick and clean as any bait....
And I've seen them chase a school of Poggie (manhaydan) right up out of the water onto dry land trying to get away from a school in a feeding frenzy, to where I was able to pick up 2 5gal buckets full for live bait and chunk bait fishing and chumming with my bear hands for stripped bass fishing.
When they go after a school of Poggie the top of the water just boils with the action.
And if you can throw your bait into the middle of a boil and get it to sink fast enough to the bottom without getting slammed by a bluefish that's where the monster stripper's are sitting feeding on the chunks of Poggie pieces dropping down from the maylay up above and you have a chance to get a 40 or 50 pounder cow stripped bass because that's where they like to sit and wait.....

OHHH NO Sammy. You DARED TO KILL one fish to eat it. There are 11 thumbs down and it would all be about keeping ONE FISH for a feed. The wallies will be all over you saying how dare you kill a fish to eat - OH NO!!! Even though a trawler and the local fish mongers have literally tons of dead fish and crustaceans for sale, you should not, not, not, not not have kept that ONE LEGAL. What happens when you eat fish and chips for a Family Gathering??????? (its getting stupid how fishing is trending). I'm getting totally sick of these self ridiculous buggers. Its all crap!!

Hey Sammy, just a tip with your failsafe setup on the Mavic - when flying off a boat or any moving platform like that, set your signal loss failsafe behaviour to 'hover' instead of return home. That way if you have something happen and RC discconects it won't fly home through trees etc if you are on a river with bends or have moved a long way from your launch position.
Love your work mate, if you come back to Vic in future and want a pro drone/camera op on your shoot I'd love to tag along on a fish mish ;)

Another good way to catch nippers is stomping through the reeds at the edge of the lake. This brings the nippers to the surface and you find them by looking for their back arching slightly above the waterline. Never caught a single fish on them but caught heaps of nippers this way :D

Fishing isn't always about keeping fish. In South Africa we also have flatties and it's because of people not releasing the fish that our stocks are low. It makes sense to release fish, because a few years later you will catch more fish because you released your breeding size fish
