    Much as I enjoyed the comparison (because I muddle through the same question all of the time), I arrive with a different conclusion because my premise does not require an exclusive result. What that means is, when you have irreconcilable priorities, you get the best of both worlds by choosing two cameras. Most of the time you know your scenario and go out the door with one camera. As is, the Micro FourThirds system is more hugely portable than any other camera system. I typically carry 6 lenses and camera in a more or less purse-sized, soft bag. If I had more gold, I might choose three cameras, the PRO end of MFT, the small end, and an LX100 or II, always in the mix, because the aperture / shutter options plus the flexibility of the controls are two stops ahead and several controls more numerous than anything in the too-small one-inch category. The LX100 type is a lone "tweener" type because the cameras do the most important parts of MFT with a bright, small, fixed lens. In sum, this comparison is admittedly apples and oranges (agreeing with the author), and the most interesting comparison might have been the GX85 with the 12-32mm zoom only. If you bring in the rest of the system and multiple lenses, it's not really fair, and you would do just as well to consider all of the MFT cameras if you are the one-camera, system type.

    Thank you for your review. I agree with your choice of the GX9 for your photo use. I have a GX9, and was thinking about buying a LX100 II. However; after your review, I'll just stick with my GX9. I use the GX9 in New York City for people photography. I keep the Leica 15mm, F1.7 lens onthe camera all the time (30mm equivalent in 35mm) I find it excellent for this use. The focus is fast and I get great results. I appreciate your information, along with your pictures.

    A great informative video as always..have just opted for the GX800 (even more compact) specifically for take everywhere and to use mainly with 20mm f1.7...was on a special deal here in uk including the 12-32mm!..another lens that looks very interesting and would love to know if you have plans to review is the new sigma 56mm f1.4 for micro 43...seen quite a few reviews for sony but hardly any for micro 43....hope you have a fab 2019!

    Very good comparison. I own the original LX100 and the GX9. The latter received way too much hate because it wasn't a "true GX8 successor", although it is such an incredible camera. In my opinion, it is among the best, if not the best, M43 body below 1000$/€, given it shares the same sensor with the G9. If only it had a mic jack as well...

    Another great review. Nice. I bought the GX-9 when it first came out and then returned it because it felt to light and a bit cheap to me, but I am beginning to regret it. I think it may be the best choice out there for an all-rounder. The only other camera that fills this niche (smallish, tilt/touch, large-ish sensor, and not to forget - a decent menu system) is the Fujifilm X-t20, but I just don't like how it looks! Maybe a few more months of waiting will turn up a Fuji X100G with tilt screen...but I doubt it.

    Excellent overall review as usual. Your decision making points at the end are spot on and totally relevant. I personally have gotten to the point that a tilt screen is a necessity for street shooting so I would go with the GX9. Also, like yourself, I also own 4 panasonic m4/3 lens and so I already have an investment in the Panasonic ILC system already. Having said that, IF the LX100mk2 had a tilt screen, which in my opinion is entirely technically feasible even in the LX physical format, I would buy two of them right now. Thanks for your time and effort, as always I look forward to your unique view of the camera world. Regards

    I got 1" sensor panasonic LX10 for my first camera .I am very happy with that. But then , after around 1 year later , i would like to have a bigger sensor camera which still portable. Gx85 / Gx9 seems something i really looking for(And i like panasonic) , also the new fuji film X-T30 looks cool. Do you have any recommend on them? I prefer it can also have good video quality. Thank you so much.

    Hello my friend. I really like your videos! I own the GX8 at the moment but i don't like video image stabilisation. I'm looking to upgrade to a G9 or a GX9 but i can't choose. The reason that i go for the G9 is because i don't like the size of the G9, i'm more of a rangefinder style guy. I can live with the GX9 tilt screen but i hear everybody say that de viewfinder is really bad. Is it really that bad? I wear glasses and i love the viewfinder on the GX8. I got a leica 12-60 and a leica 15mm f1.7 lens. Is the video stabilisation on the GX9 that much better than the gx8? Is the stabilisation almost as good as the G9's? I hope to hear from you. Happy New Year 2019!
    I have a G9 now and it’s great but also little big/heavy and I try to evaluate if I keep it and get used to the size and enjoy it’s performance or try GX9 and accept its limitation and go more for 1080p and internal mic or external mic like Zoom H1 or instamic.
    I understand that GX9 4K video AF is not very fast and reliable and it has no mic in.
    Is GX9 1080p Video AF as reliable as G9 ? Or is that still not good for moving objects like kids for example? How is the internal mic audio ?
    I try to understand if GX9 can work as a smaller hybrid camera than G9 or if it’s just for stills recommended. But then I think GX9 will also need a separate bag and does not fit in a jacket pocket anyway so maybe the size discussion is more a theoretical nature and not worth this trade off.
    Since you have both could you please give your perspective to this?

      Happy new year to you as well! GX9 is definitely not as all-round usable as the G9, if you shoot a lot of vide, G9 is much better option and I would probably choose G85 instead of GX9 for hybrid use.

    I already have a Ricoh GR III... how do you feel about the LX100Mk2 in 2020 to compliment the GR? The Fuji X70 prices have gone nuts. I really like the external controls. For an ILC I'm leaning to Sony A6600/A7C/A7iii etc... Will appreciate your thoughts. For travel and street photography. I often shoot in low light situations with high dynamic range between highlights and shadows so with highlights correctly exposed I value ability to recover details from shadows with low noise.

    • @TheHybridShooter

    I can’t decide between the GX85 and the GX9. The GX85/80 is cheaper and is said to have the same internals as the G85/80 except the obvious physical differences and weather sealing. But then the GX9 is newer and more up to date but $350 more than the GX85/80.
    So my question is what would you recommend? I want a rangefinder style camera as it’ll be easier to have on me at all times compared to my bigger G9. I love the G9 but it’s a bit big to have on me at all times.
    Thanks if you reply and keep up the quality videos!

    I think it’s worth mentioning that another difference between these cameras is that the lens on the LX100 is unique and not otherwise available. If I could buy an interchangeable stabilized 10.9-34 1.7-2.8 for MFT with the same size I surely would. What an amazing pairing with the gx9 that would be.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 років тому +2

      That lens is so small because of the multi aspect ratio. It is not large enough to cover whole M43 so there is basically additional crop. F1.7 on LX100 is a bit different than F1.7 on GX9.

    • @sirlancelot3109
      @sirlancelot3109 5 років тому +1

      Sure but the effective sensor size is only 15% smaller while a 12-35 2.8 is 200% longer and totally not pocketable. My point is only that they are roughly compatible in performance but the lx is unique in providing an MFT 12-35 in a much smaller package.

    • @polarized8708
      @polarized8708 Рік тому +1

      A part of the whole lens is inside the camera body and have to build up before ready to use.
      In MFT terms, the lens would be a 12-37mm F1.9-3.1 which is quite impressive.

    • @cmartin_ok
      @cmartin_ok 8 місяців тому

      Absolutely. I bought a used LX100 mark I a couple of years ago and it's about to accompany me on a trip to Christmas markets primarily because of that fast zoom lens. The 12-35 f/2.8 on a GX body is a much heavier and bulkier solution and is still about one stop slower through most of its (smaller) zoom range

  • @curiosadireccion
    @curiosadireccion 4 роки тому +1

    Hello!. I really appreciate the video, it is well documented and seems to be based on experience. However, there is one fact that surprises me and although I have searched the web, I cannot reach a decision: The fixed objective of the LX100mII is a large aperture, with f / 1.7, and yet the interchangeable objectives of the GX9 start from f / 3.5, but they are usually appreciated as good optical lenses (of course this applies to any lens, I particularize it for these models). So why can a less luminous interchangeable lens be preferred to a fixed one with several brighter steps? Both cameras being equivalent sensors, there is surely a reasonable explanation, but I am not able to understand it. Another example, the Panasonic TZ100 / SZ100 has a 25/250 focal range with a maximum aperture of f 2.8, and I still read reviews calling it "dark" compared to the Lumix LX10 / 15, which opens at f 1.4. Why is the TZ100's f2.8 dark while an interchangeable lens with f 3.5 is acceptable? I would greatly appreciate your expert response. Greetings from Spain.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      For me I find myself having both cameras in my bag but always seem to favour the G80 which I find more comfortable to hold as having a far better grip and of course the better rear screen option as well as better control dials (IMHO) also the G80 is not that much bigger than the GX9 so no real benefit there either to use it

      I currently own two G9s (each paired with a different f2.8-4 zoom lens) and an lx100 original - i was thinking of swapping out one of the G9s for a GX9 to increase versatility and use with a prime lens for daily/street shooting . • @TheHybridShooter

    Please can you explain by what you mean when you say that "Both of these cameras look vintage, which is important with these types of cameras" Can you set out what are the importances about looking vintage for these cameras as I am not able to understand what a vintage look ha s to do with anything, and why is it so important with these two particular cameras? Is a vintage look unimportant with other types of camera? I must be missing something here as I am a bit lost.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 років тому +1

      It is mostly subjective, so I can't really explain that, it just reminds me of old rangefinders. The reason why I think that the design is import with this type of camera is that it is meant for street and travel shooting so it should also be a nice fashion accessory.

    Hello @The Hybrid Shooter, seeing this video for the first time because I am interested in buying Panasonic Lumix LX100 ii. In the past I have held Sony A7Rii, A6400, Panasonic GX85, Fuji X-T2 but have come to realise that I require a small portable camera. I also have the latest mobile phone i.e. Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra whose camera is quite good and obviously a handy choice to use anywhere around for both photography and 4K videos (to be shared on Social Media).
    LX100ii is 3 years old but having micro 4/3rd sensor should mean its result would still be better than that of Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (phone camera) including for 4K video?
    Is it worth investing in this camera (LX100ii) which is portable from weight, size perspective, reasonable zoom plus photo/video results? I don't want to spend too much money, at this stage. I even read that Fuji-Film's X-100V is a very good camera but the limitation is fixed prime lens (when I prefer a zoom due to travel) and the cost is so high that one thinks why not pay a little extra and buy Sony A7C instead.
    Also why is LX100ii compared to Sony Cyber-Shot RX100v, RX100vii or Sony ZV-1 when they are only 1" systems? And how come they having a smaller sensor deliver equal/better results than LX100ii?
    My ultimate plan is to go back to Full-Frame camera after saving some money and waiting for Sony A7Cii to be launched, in 2022. I liked it due to its form factor (compact) and features.
    Thank you.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  2 роки тому +1

      I don't recommend LX100 II in 2021, something like Sony ZV-1 is much better choice. Sensor in LX100 II always works in crop mode, so it is not a full-featured camera, video is cropped, autofocus is terrible, lens is below average...
      I can highly recommend original A7C though, that is a great camera. A7C II will be much more expensive if or when it will be released.

    off topic question, should i go for g9 or g85 if i'm using g7 right now ? I know that G9 is the better one but the size and price are what i really concern on G9. Do you think that in 2019, Will Panasonic launch new camera on m4/3 system ? or its ok to go on G85 or G9 ? My job is photographer and G7 still not suites for my work especially event and low light condition. Thank you for your opinion.
    P.S. I know that fullframe is the better choice but I don't want to carry a rock in my bag . If you still recommend on fullframe then I will reconsider it.

      @thedvsmonkey 5 років тому +2

      I have a G7, G85 and a G9. If you want to keep your costs and learning time down go with the G85. It has the same layout as the G7 and you can use the same batteries. You get the added benefit of weather sealing and IBIS and virtually no learning curve.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 років тому +3

      I you are professional photographer, I definitely recommend G9 over G85, it is well worth extra price and weight. Panasonic will mainly focus on full frame in 2019, so I don't think that we will see GH6 or G10. Full frame is more suitable for event photography, although G9 can do it as well and it depends on the lens.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      A6500 won't help that much with high ISO, and I don't think that the ergonomics and handling is particularly suitable for professional work + there is no suitable APS-C zoom lens for event photography.
