Excellent review. For my needs, I probably would choose XT30. I have been into macro, astro, and nature. The larger sensor not only means better dynamic range, but easier to achieve shallow depth of field and Fuji has what is probably better performance when taking uncompressed photos. The Fuji has most of the benefits of it’s much mire expensive XT3. The GX9 would be better if not using any support, especially in lowlight.

Yes ‘…both are great fun to use…’ totally agree, that what really matters, loving my GX9 for every day use from the pocket or just with a hand strap, under rated for street, get the settings right and custom set them and never miss a shot. Use the elec shutter and rear touchscreen AF, screen tilted and shoot from the hip, nobody notices, all good. Andrew very good review, love your channel for its quick moving straight talk. 👏

    Excellent video.. As usual!
Was at B&H Photo here in New York yesterday and checked out the GX9. It's very nice! Not as robustly built as my GX8, but it's very close. Supposedly, the GX9 actually has better image quality due to a better Venus engine and no low-pass filter. The only thing it really doesn't have are the extra function buttons. Which I don't use that much anyway.
I'll be selling my GX8 to help finance the purchase of a G9 and eventually, buy a GX9 for street and travel photography.
    Keep up the great work!

As a Fuji and now Lumix MFT user, a very balanced review. For general travel use I think the Gx9 has the edge with image stabilisation, and (for me) the 4K Photo modes. But I can easily see that for other purposes and personal preferences the X-T30 has a lot going for it.

Early 2021: just sent a camera back after trying it out (Fuji...). Waiting for Panasonic to come out with something new (rangefinder inspired style, i.e. viewfinder in upper lefthand corner) while thinking it might never happen. Have the gx8 ever since it was released, but might pick up the gx9 after all this time after all, and it would not surprise me if it turns out to be good enough.

One clarification: image stabilization doesn't work with a moving subject, high ISO does. How that applies to one's shooting depends on the range of subjects, but they are not equivalent in general. For video, IS is more of a must have, but can also be done in post at the cost of some cropping. For motion blurred subjects, there is no post. Thanks for the helpful review.

I have a GX7 with a few lenses (PL 25mm f1.4, 7-14mm f4, 20mm 1.7 mk1 and a 12-60mm kit lens) and am thinking of an upgrade. Would you a) go for the G9 and stick to current lenses for the time being or b) get a GX9 and spend the difference in price on a new lens (like the 15mm f1.7)?

I really can't get me to like the Gx9 interface and button placement having it side by side with an EM5 mkII, but you probably saved me some money with this video since I was thinking of getting rid of the GX9 for the new fuji X-T30: looking at this review it seems handling is not better, viewfinder is probably even worse then on the gx9 and the gain it can give in low light it's not significant due to lack of stabilization. Building quality also doesn't seems to impress you on the Fuji compared with the GX9 which is already nothing to cry home about. Better keep on the m43 ecosystem and hope for finally a new BSI m43 sensor able to improve to some extent low light capability. I know FF is way better in this regard but the lenses are too large and bulky for me.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 років тому +1

You probably need a bigger camera in that case. These are not mean to have no-compromise handling, since the portability is also priority here.

Nice vid 👌 I've already had xt2 paired with xf18-55mm and 35mm f2. I like 35mm f2 more (for photo) , but when recording video (my kids) it's too shaky. My only option when recording is swapping the lens to 18-55mm. I just want to use one camera + one lens that can do stills and videos at the same time without swapping lenses. I'm considering GX9 with DG summilux 15mm f1.7. Do you think it's a good idea to sell my xt2 and go for gx9? Or maybe just sticking with my xt2+xf18-55?

I am very interested in the XT30. But your comparison reconfirmed my "love" for my Panasonic GX80 (more or less the same as the GX9).
Both camera's are great. Differences between video quality and photo's are relatively small for me. For me a good camera is the one that handles best. I will skip the XT30 and go on with my 3 year old GX80. The excellent IBIS (most important for me), better menu structure, better screen, issues on Lightroom with Fuji files and the 4 Lumix lenses I have, are my main reasons.
But for a first camera the Xt30 would be fine too.

What complaints do you have about MFT? I think it's amazing. Does everything most of us need, prints large, the lenses are smaller, there are more of them than for any other system (something like 100 vs Fuji's 50) and the cameras seem to have the most tech packed into them.

    •  5 років тому +1

When you have a body with IBIS it is a game changer - you should definetly try it. I have had G7 for a while and main drawback was the lack of IBIS. G85 is an awesome choice because of what you get for the price - it is insanely attractive nowadays. Probably the best price/features ratio of all cameras on the market today. If you have invested in MFT lenses already I see no point going into different system because you almost get no advantage in real life (oh maybe if you have very special demands that only some other camera can fulfill). If you don't have a good stable of lenses you have a great opportunity to try anything is available. But again in real life you can't find better IBIS than the one found in modern m4/3 cameras and it is really important feature that you find valuable for sure on a daily basis, whether it is photography or video. Build quality of G85 is much, much better than you can find with G7 - different league despite very low price of G85 now. Good luck with your decisions, it is not easy!

@@keith_pictures Low light. Even with my 20mm f1.7 I am definitely not a fan of my lumix g7's lowlight capabilities. I got this setup on my balcony where I control my camera from the panasonic phone app and I shoot birds while I study... but I'm lacking the light for a good enough shutter speed unless I open to 1.7 which it's wayyy too shallow depth of field.
I'm just dreaming of better low light, but apsc won't get me that; full frame will and that's probably too expensive unless I get an a7ii with some sigma glass.
I think if I had the g80 I wouldn't complain at all since it is quite a bit sharper, has ibis which makes it viable for handhold filming, and weathersealed so I could bring it no issue on walks in the rain.

I have gravitated towards many of the same cameras that you own even without seeing some of your reviews. (D5500, d500, g85, gx85, and recently a6500) So, I assume our shooting preferences are similar and would like your opinion. I want to have a video camera at home for office videos and a separate camera I can take out and shoot some hand held/cinematic videos, but mostly (70%) will be stable video (real estate, interviews, etccc.) I picked up an a6500 just today for a steal of a deal but haven't used it much yet. Would you recommend me sell everything and pick up a g95 for vlogging and out and about usage and a gh5 for office video and professional real estate? Or should I just keep the a6500 and sell everything else and get a gh5 and use it in conjunction? Would the colors be too far off? Easier to use same system? Any benefit for having that larger sensor for certain situations or will the gh5 be fine? Thanks in advance!

I was tempted by both cameras but the shots per battery are too low for my liking, plus I'd need to spend over 10k on lenses to have the same range of lenses as I have now. I have the GX80 and the Fuji XT20 which is very close to the XT30 but with the advantage of being cheaper and having a touchscreen for many functions that the XT30 lacks. What I don't understand is why the GX9 has any significant advantage over the GX80/85 because the only real differences are that the GX9 has a slightly more megapixels and an adjustable viewfinder. But it weighs even more than the GX80 which is already quite hefty. So for me the much cheaper GX80 is the better camera. But overall I think the Fuji XT 20 and XT30 are miles ahead on image quality for stills, and are also capable of stunning video.
