I'm glad you mentioned the dust problem of the original LX100. So many people including myself had to deal with this. Panasonic knew about this problem for sure, but they didn't wheater sealed this new one. Shame

The only compact cameras (and this is somewhat compact) that get weather-sealed are the beach/underwater cameras from companies like Olympus, Ricoh, and a few others. You're just not going to get a weather-sealed compact of any sort with a 1" or M 4/3 sensor. Not from any company.

@@MH-rt9ts You are correct, I only wish they dust proof it or at least tried to implement something knowing it was a problem. I had the RX100 MK1 and treated it the same as my LX100 and never had any particles sucked inside.

I'm sure the LX100 is a photographer's camera due to some Leica design influence, as it tends to end up with a red dot, new brand name and a price hike...
I also cursed my Lumix cameras for accidental touchscreen focus point shifting , but only recently found the 'operation lock' option in the menu, which can be set to a Fn function button. So now I can set a focus point and via an Fn button, enable the operation lock to 'lock' the touchscreen. I find that very useful.

I owned the first gen and shot with it extensively for two years. I absolutely love it. The lens is good, micro four thirds is much better than one inch sensor, huge difference in image quality. Images aren't as sharp as the Sony rx100, but are much prettier.
Its weaknesses are, that it let's dust in, start up time is slow, viewfinder/screen is slow when stressing the camera.
Looks like this iteration's upgrades are:
    Touch screen
    New sensor
    New processor
I think they are all much needed, as the 12 megapixel of the previous gen was adequate but can be more. The new processor can solve the slow down issue (?), plus providing upgrades and new features, per your video has pointed out. The touch screen is good for focusing.
But I think a tilty/swivel screen would've been very helpful. The viewfinder can use an upgrade. More dust proofing is actually much needed. These are really important upgrades, too....
I think this is the perfect camera for those who want to start learning photography. It does everything, beautiful images, great macro ability, good zoom range, fast lens, compact, lots of manual dials. I had a blast with it until I lost it one day on the trail. I used it very rigorous, but it held up really well. A cheap screen protector would be a good idea, so it does scratch easily.
People tend to think that a Sony A6000 is the best camera for starting out, because it's cheap. But the problem is that, once you add the price of a good lens it's not cheap anymore, something to think about.... This Leica lens is beautiful. Upgrading from a Sony RX100 iii I fell in love with it right away. I hate one inch sensors because images don't pop, though it's sharp. Maybe use it in a phone camera or something, that'd be perfect. The Panasonic CM1 did it and it looked so cool. I'd gladly sacrifice some thickness of my phone for the 1 inch sensor.
Anyways, I'm not sure if this second gen is worth it, as you can get the first gen for cheaper and you really don't get that much more, practically speaking. For casual shooting the first gen works really well already. For more seriously shooting why not get the Fuji XT20?

The original LX100 got me into photography. A great tool to learn on and be creative with. This is a small upgrade, and would have liked to see weather sealing. Had a chance to play with the GX9, and that is a bit weightier but ergonomically, may be a bit better.

I bought the LX100 in june 2023 secondhand. Almost new, 250 euro. Loved it but IQ compared to my EM1.2 was quite a difference. Of course with a good prime it is not fair. LX100ii....was very difficult to come by and still is. On a trip to London last week a camerastore where I popped in just for fun, had a really A++ one for 650 pound. A steep price but it had absolutely no dust (tested it with various F stops), not marks on the cam etc. And the output is actually quite a bit better. Low light is better, the IS (not tested extensively) seems at least a stop better, the touchscreen is mostly good. What I miss is the dedicated different shooting modes. They are there but not as easy to pick and chose. The L monochrome D is actually a fantastic setting for street photography at least to my mind. So it is early days but I love it and I am glad that for citytrips and holidays I can leave my EM1.2 and all the lenses at home. And I like using the LX100II a lot more than my EM1.2. Not because of the weight and size, but due to the controls on board and the ease it is to operate. The menusystem is a lot better for me too.

I was crushed when my original lx100 got stolen on a trip. A absolutely loved that camera and has been waiting for a new version ever since. Something about the manual controls, the huge sensor, it was just great. I was fortunate enough to not have dust issues.
Since then I got to play with those 1 inch cameras, notably the rx100 iii and the g7x ii (which is what I own now). While they are not even close to the lx100 in terms of image quality and controls, they do offer a lot (notably a tilting screen) in a very small package.
If this successor had a tilting screen, it would be a no brainer for me. But now I'm not sure I will get this one. Maybe. I have a trip to Japan soon, I'll see how much it costs over there. ;)

I own and love the LX100 for it's size, manual controls and great lens. I too was thinking that the Mark II, given the time since the original would have had some more improvements. Nevertheless for what it does have, it is a superb camera. I won't be upgrading though as I have a GX80/85 which fills in for where the LX100 lacks.

The constant focus seeking with continuous auto-focus is terrible on the original LX100. It's completely unusuable for video. If they'd fixed that I would upgrade in a heartbeat. Unfortunately with a narrower focal length equivalent in video, this seems like a step back from the original with no significant improvements. If my LX100 got lost or stolen, I wouldn't replace it with a LX100 mark II. Thanks for pointing out that I could remove the bezel when using a filter step up adapter! That's been driving me crazy. I always had my filters screwed on loose so that it would allow the lens to retract, and then the filter got totally unscrewed in my bag and scratched the lens.

It really is a shame they didn't add dust prevention to the lens system. I would have paid full price for this camera if that was the only upgrade. I use my LX100 as my easily portable MTB photography camera. I shoot a lot in thick forest canopy and somewhat lower light and the fast lens and larger sensor combo really helps in these scenarios. But with that also comes harsher environments, often time quite dusty. There really isn't anyone else offering this compact of a camera, with usable ergonomics, good low light performance, with a 24-70 focal length and fast lens. Please Please Please give me weather proofing and a mic input on LX200!

Gx80 with that lens, F3.5-5.6 is not going to be as good for low light, but is using the entire sensor.
The mk1 lx100 was only using 80% of the sensor so its f1.7 at its fastest was equivalent to maybe an F.2 on a Full m4/3 sensor

  • @adrinathegreat3095
    @adrinathegreat3095 4 роки тому +2

Touch screen and bluetooth aren't something that interests me, more resolution means smaller pixels, being a new design sensor, that probably doesn't matter.
The issue is, a bigger crop on 4k giving the widest angle possible of 32mm, instead of the approx 28mm on the lx100 mk1.
Also the mk2 uses slightly less of the sensor in 4k.
Angle of view is same on 1080 modes, so for widest video use 1080.
No low pass filter on the mk2 to give slightly sharper images " debateable" but increasing likelihood of morie " a possibility under certain conditions".
The mk1 had a low pass filter but I believe it was weak " so a compromise of sorts"
Other thing I missed out was bluetooth, again something I'm not interested in.
Same as wifi, anybody tried using Panasonic's crap software will no its junk.
Myself I wouldn't buy a manually designed kind of device, to have it fitted with bells and whistles.
But I'm not everyone, would I buy the lx100 mk2, the answer is no, for me the extra buttons, resolution, touchscreen and bluetooth are reasons to not buy it.
Like the relative simplicity and ease of use of the mk1, dont want more menus and more buttons I'm not going to use.
Set parameters manually and take photo.
What I'd like to have seen done was a redesigned lens, giving a 22mm equivalent widest angle starting point, and finishing on 80mm, at the same speed.
This would obviously involve a complete redesign of the camera and lens system, but would result in a still fairly compact camera.
I'm not paying £850 for the same camera body and lens with a different sensor, bluetooth and touchscreen, to me that's just an incremental upgrade

Losing TFT mouny is a leap.
60+ years later I have always been a prime kinda guy.
    You touched on dust.
I see a least common denominator why dust enters cameras.
Especially point and shoots where the lense must extend from pancake storage mode, and macros being racked out.
When they extend a vacuum is drawn in the body.
Where ever air rushes in, it draws in dust.
Makers need to add a filtered air intake.
Hope you read this far. Chris

The disappointing things with this update in my opinion, are a mic input and the ability to send a live HDMI out. That would have been a significant improvement, even if everything else remained the same. Video quality on the original model is excellent. There are some absolutely stunning examples of what can be achieved using this camera, all over UA-cam. You kinda play down the video capability of this camera, but Fenchel and Janisch's 'Lumix Lx100 4K Test' and their 'Grey Day' footage are stunning. Bjorn Fischer's 'Spring Is Here', is also great. If you're looking at this camera, check those examples out. I own the original and it's great, the update isn't worth it in my opinion though, which is a pity. Thanks for the review, guys.

I had the same sensor dust issue with my sony rx100 ii and I never put it in my pocket. However, it strikes me that if you are going to put any pocketable compact camera with a zoom lens in your pocket, then it would be a good idea to put it in to a small zip-lock freezer bag before you do so. Obviously, if you are in a situation where you need fast access, then you just keep it in your hand.

Something brought up in the video - dust getting inside the lens. I have a Fz2500 & over the 2 years I've used it I can see 1 or 2 dust particles on the inside of the lens. Don't seem to notice any spots when in Lightroom but what are your thoughts on me sending the camera to Panasonic's service center to have the lens removed & then cleaned ? With a fixed lens it can't be done ? Wouldn't be worth the expense ? Also, I've really been enjoying my Fz & it's all around versatility & would look forward to seeing a future " Fz3000 " with incorporated G9 features. Any thoughts on this happening?

Would this camera be good for a beginner photographer? I was looking at
the canon eos m50, but this has been catching my eye lately.

So what other options are there with similar external controls and features? What other brands come close? I've been holding off on buying a replacement to my broken Canon for 3 years, this was the one I wanted but it seems to fall very short of its competitors. DPreview what are the other options?

Still waiting for the GM5 Mark II. Now that would be truly compact, pocketable and easy to clean the sensor. Still happy with my little red Mark I.

Can you comment on autofocus speed for candid pictures of people/family/kids compared to the Canon G5X ii? I'm trying to decide between these two cameras and wondering if Panasonic's DFD should be one of the deciding factors. Just for stills, video doesn't matter much to me. Thanks in advance!

I loved using my LX100 however it would front focus with landscapes. Moved to a GX85 and the 12-32mm but never enjoyed the lens and it weighed so much no longer could carry in jacket.

Great, great video! It was super balanced review highlighting its photography centric wonderful user experience but just a ho-hum barely incremental upgrade for a very, very expensive camera that has extremely tough competition to stack up against.

Hmm, a correction about the focal length crop factor. With the multi-aspect ratio design (using ~17MP of the 20MP sensor) the 10.9 - 34mm lens *is* a 35mm equivalent of 24-75mm. So 24mm is not "more like a 32mm lens" [6:38].
    Do I win a camera?

Can you (or anyone else who knows) please clarify something? In official specs, it says that the first version is 55mm thick while this one is 64mm. But they look identical in thickness in every side by side picture. Is the LX100 II really significantly thicker than the original? Thanks. (Yes, 1cm is significant.)

Question to LX100 (I and II) users! When I turn on my Lumix camera (TZ101), simultaneously pressing the Display button AND turning the Power switch, the camera is turning on right into Display mode, which is useful, when you don't want to record and your lens to be extracted, just to check your photos. Is this working the same for the LX100? This feature is not included in the offical manual but quite useful, I missed it from my previous old Canon until I managed to find out how it works here. Probably it iworks the same for all Lumix cameras.
