Panasonic LX 100 II: Best Compact Ergos Since the Leica Q?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- I don't know why it took me until now to realize that the LX100 is even NAMED like its primary competitor, Sony's RX100 series. DOH!
Even so, as I played with one at Panasonic USA HQ a few weeks ago, I kept thinking that the LX100 II's ergos bore more than a passing resemblance to the Leica Q.
And how do smartphones fit into any of this?
I didn't have a chance to go shooting with it, as firmware was NOT finalized -- so call this my preview of what we've got here.

Hugh, you are without doubt the most articulate person to ever talk about a non articulating touchscreen! Such a great channel.
Hah! Thank you! Such a great UA-cam community with such generous and supportive people like you, Andy!
I realize this video is 5 years old but it's still super relevant. This is still one of the best compact cameras around and I often finding myself choosing the x100ii over my Fuji.
In short, the lx 100 mk ii is a perfect gem of a camera - great ergonomics , exposure triangle controls , sweet leica lens - simplicity and quality personified .
"The best set of analogue controls I've seen on any camera with built in lens other than the Leica Q" - This is what sums up the LX100 series. I moved on from a Canon EOS 30D and went to the original LX100 and just have so much fun shooting with it. I must also add that it did wonders in terms of teaching me more about how shutter speed, aperture and iso affect the final image.
Have to agree. The only other I can think of is the Fuji 100 series. But the LX100 has that great lens.
As an owner of an LX100, I was waiting to see what the II would offer. While it is not necessarily a compelling upgrade for current owners, it represents a very fine evolution of an already fine EDC camera. Because it is not a huge upgrade, I’ll probably sink those funds into a GX9 to replace my OMD EM5 mk1 or more glass for said camera. However, I would not hesitate to recommend the new LX100 to anyone looking for a great camera in a very portable size.
I love that at the same time you are extolling the virtues of all this high end gear, you always bring it back to reality: phone cameras aren’t that bad.
However, they are also pretty good GPS devices, media consumption devices, social networking devices and, oh yes, communication devices. For some of us, myself included, the constant interruption and disruption of switching from one mode to the other as I make my way through the day is simply not worth the convenience factor. And, keep in mind that every time one of these amazing features is accessed it drains the battery, some much more than others. And at the end of the day, both figuratively and literally, I need my phone most to be what it actually is: a phone.
Hello, I'm a retired Photographer from the days of 2 1/4 Film. Have been using a Nikon d200 with a 35 - 200 zoom since I got into digital for my personal use, but am now too old to lug it around anymore. So I have been looking at the lieca since they have always made the best lenses. Now that I see other brands are using the lieca lens, it opens up allot more choices for me. Personally, I would not own a point and shoot without a Lieca lens. After all, it is still true that the lens is the first part of taking a photo.
Took delivery today of my LX100ii. Why not the RX100 V, VA or VI? Ergonomics just like the man says. Panny feels like it belongs in a photographer's hands. Sony feels like it belongs in the shower, only a bar of soap would be cheap to drop.
1.7-2.8 micro 4/3rd. Would pic it over my rx100v any day. Especially for vlogging. The eye focus on Panasonic cameras are awesome!
I always listen to you in 1.25x or 1.5x speed. Like a charm.
Wow. You have a fast CPU. I sometimes rewind and transcribe what Hugh says because it's so dense packed it is the only way I can get all of it
Kudos to you!
I got the Leica version (D-Lux7), which is a dream for physical controls. My indoor B&W's at ISO 1600 are as creamy-looking as I've gotten with any camera.
dalethorn2 so glad you enjoy it!
I keep buying small cameras, and selling them. I only feel my passion with my new conversion to Micro 4/3 cameras. I like my G9 with prime lenses is very light. If I carry one camera the G9 or the DH5 with the 12-35 and 35-100 produce images that are enough better than an iPhone to justify lugging them around. I am 71 and weight is an issue. I used Nikon Cameras since 1964, along with every other known kind of camera and format working as a commercial Photographer for 30 years. I bought three smaller Panasonic with interchangeable lenses, sold them all and the G9 viewfinder allows my 71 year old eyes to see better through the camera than through my glasses. The small cameras are chasing a smaller and smaller market, my iPhone 8 can produce a nice 8x10 with considerable work in Photoshop. The JPEG files out of the two larger Panasonic cameras are good as is. Since I do mostly volunteer work now, offloading at the event works out fine.
I have spent decades looking through an OVF. I bought an LX100 to slip into my coat pocket or shoulder bag. I only use a screen for settings and reviewing photos. The manual dials are great. I only use the EVF when shooting. It does the job very well for what I do. Articulating screen is not important to me. Neither is video. I always buy the trailing edge of technology. I bought a refurbished LX100 for $600Cdn ($460US) last February. If I need something like this 2-3 years, I may consider the Mark II.
Thanks for another wonderful presentation Hugh, always a joy to listen to you "conversation" with us. It does seem to be a wonderful little unit and I am always happy when the manufacturers give the public more options (this not being a "one size fits all world") to be creative in our captures. We migrated back to Olympus in 2016 as our one brand for all of our commercial work, ever so enjoying the smaller and lighter form factor and amazing glass. I will always carry a camera with me, even on family holidays, as I prefer a viewfinder (EVF or OVF) for my composition. The delightful Pen-F has been the perfect companion when I don't feel like taking the E-M1 MkII, and most of my personal work is in Monochrome, shot as in camera jpg. If I didn't already have the Pen-F, this looks like it would be something I would want! To come full circle with my ramblings, again, delighted that camera manufacturers are continuing to innovate and produce a variety of options for us! Cheers!
Tried Olympus, just couldn't get my head around the menus. I'm clearly too old!
Very Insightful, reminiscent of one of my favorite university professors... Absolutely random ramblings that were drawn together in the end to an elegant conclusion! I will be attending more of you classes! Kudos!
The dynamic black & white setting is amazing
It’s always a matter of the use case. The LX100 II fits perfectly for me. Just plain and simple photography. No need for video.
Hugh!! I thought you were going to make my choice between this limux lx 100 II and the sony rx100 VI easy for me. Then at the end of this video you started talking about the Iphone X I already have and... I need a good camera for low light for a trip to Japan NEXT WEEK. I'm so confused!!! Any help would be great.
Sorry. 😉 Neither one is a low light monster. The ‘VI has reach the iPhone and LX 100 II don’t, the LX100 II has ergos the ‘VI and iPhone don’t. Between the two, I’d go RX 100 Vi for reach, LX 100 II for fun. But you might also look at the larger ILC Sony a6300 or Fuji X-E3, both with 24mp APS-C sensors for at least one stop better low light performance. Of the two, I’d go with X-E3 w/18-55. Bigger than the little guys, but now you can also explore other lenses.
Would you choose the LUMIX LX100 ii or the LUMIX GX9? Thanks 🙏🏼
Midnight Moon 🌙 I like the flexibility of interchangeable lenses and the tiltable EVF of the GX9 - as well as the flexibility to use it with my existing glass as a b-cam for video work.
My wife is in Iceland for holiday right now. Wanted to bring something to shoot colorful evening sky (aurura b.). I rented this 100 II because it has a bigger sensor than her iPhone XS and a Leica f/1.7 lens. For capturing images in perfect light, I agree .... her iPhone is fine and sufficient. But for other circumstances in which you want to have greater control over the exposure settings in light-compromised situations, this camera rocks and the iPhone wouldn't be able to carry the water. Thoughts?
Stephen O'Sullivan you’re right! 😎👍🏻
Interseting as alwawys, Hugh! But my main question is...The LENS! Sharpness?? As a landscape and product photographer using the Fujifilm X-T3 System, my main focus (pardon the pun) is image quality at larger print sizes, particularly, image SHARPNESS and DETAIL RENDITION. So, which lens is sharper (between the Panny and the Sony RX100 V), i.e, which system would retain more fine details when printing at, say, 16x20"? Thanks again, sir, and Happy New Year to you and yours!
Steve TQP Sorry - that requires a level of pixel peeping I didn’t do. 😊 My sense is that if the image is compelling on its own, no one would see the differences, whatever they are - but I might be wrong.
@@3BMEP Point taken, Hugh. I'm still researching a Quality "compact travel camera", with image sharpness/detail retention at large print output being my main criteria. I have limited brand choice to Sony, Panny and Canon, but as there are dozens of models in the sub $1,000 range, I hae my work cut out for me! Best Regards, Steve
I have to start off with I am only an amature but would love to be better. I really am asking for some help and advice. I had the Olympus Pen 10 and while it was amazing for photos etc, because of my shaky hands (I have a tremor) and Rheumatoid Arthritis I just could not keep changing lens. Fantastic camera, but..... The things I would like from the camera is good photos and video, good stabilisation, touchscreen, moveable screen but not that important, good zoom, I would like to photograph birds, family, moving shots, macro so bugs on flowers etc, etc. I was looking at the Lumix LX100 11 but not sure about the quality of the photos and video also the zoom, the Sony HX99 but not sure about the same again and also stabilisation, and the Canon SX740 HS. I have been trying to whittle them down but I don't know all the jargon as am only an amateur but willing to learn. I am a young pensioner so cannot spend a lot of money but I think you get what you pay for in terms of quality (maybe)!!!!!!! I need to decide quickly though as I would like to start going out again to photograph. Sorry if it sounds a lot but I don't know anyone professional to ask and if I ask in a shop I could be talked into the wrong one. 😊
Take a look at a used Sony RX10 IV.
@@3BMEP Thank you so much I will look now.
I have a friend who loved to shoot analogue with point and shooters when we were teenagers. She doesn't own a top of the line phone so pictures from it are pretty boring. She asked advice on buying a camera, to use on her next road trip across the States, and also to start learning (semi) manual photography. The release of the LX100II has lead me to only one sensible recommendation for her... It's a second hand original LX100. That, for me, sums up the meaning of the LX100II for the masses.
Nathan Tax Good advice!
The iPhone X is a camera. But I wouldn't call it a real camera. A real camera establishes a mood for photography. Gives the tools and the feel to be capturing images. While perhaps very practiced photographers can enter this mode with any imaging device, for me at least, I cannot get into this groove, this way of thinking, this way of seeing, without putting my eye into an eyepiece, and clicking a physical, tactile button.
Good point!
It's also decent at best in low light and sensor is still stick at 1/3". Would be great to see what they(or google which almost best in class) can do with 1/2" in lowlight.
Oh darling the struggles of a first world photographer!
Erudite, informative and entertaining as always, Hugh. I count myself fortunate to have the Fuji X100V & two Pen Fs among my collection of cameras. For decades I used only my 35mm OM10. Ten years ago I bought my first digital camera (the little Fuji Finepix S2995 bridge camera) in anticipation of taking photos of our then anticipated grandchild. I've been on a digital journey these last ten years including the magnificent Fujifilm XS1, their X100T, now the V, as well as all three iterations of the Olympus OMD EM1. My wife and I are thrilled that our grandson shares our passion for photography and have bought him an X100V for Christmas. With the analogue controls and fixed lens I think there's no better way for him to learn and understand about photography, especially with a camera that he will have the rest of his life and which doesn't intimidate him. We encourage him to just shoot what he wants, as he wants without any concern for rules or restrictions. It's a joy to see the freedom of expression and confidence that this gives him. Already he's beginning to see what does and doesn't work for him.
However, forgive me for digressing. These last few years I've had an itch that I'm about to give in and scratch. Specifically I am torn between the Panasonic LX100 (100 or 100 ll) and the Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) or D-LUX 7. All of my Olympus kit has a specific lens permanently attached to a specific body (I call them my customised bridge cameras!) whereas the attraction of the LX100 is similar to that of 100V, the fixed lens negates the debate and necessity to carry a plethora of kit and causes one to focus on the photography with the camera in hand.
I'm an old traditionalist at heart and have never used any of my cameras for video. For me the viewfinder is everything. It's as though I'm looking out of a window at the entire world and I just have to decide on what, and when, to press the trigger. Stay safe and keep doing what you do because you excel at it!
No tilt LCD screen, bummer
We have the LX100 and it is excellent. But lack of articulating display makes low angle shots a nightmare.
Lens Element wifi and a phone or tablet.....works great....problem solved
That would be inconvenient and stupid, I'd rather get the now super cheap gx85 and some lenses. I dunno what Panasonic is smoking but gx9 and this is a disappointment.
hi Hugh, how come you do not mention the Leica D-Lux, which is the very same camera... sorry, keyboard question mark not working...
I haven’t had one in hand.
@@3BMEP I know this request might not be a viable one, but it would be great to see your review on the new D-Lux7, or even a D-Lux vs. C-Lux, for guys like me that are still searching for their first Leica - and one for travel photography. Can you try to make it happen (question mark still not working...)
Nice review and entertaining as always, Hugh. Here's my 2 yen from Tokyo. I have the Leica version of the LX100 and love it, despite some minor quibbles. Would have considered upgrading, but don't see the point based on what's in the LX100M2. Now hold that thought... I have the Huawei P20 Pro (despite what the US govt says about Huawei) and am truly amazed at the Leica camera tech on this phone. The Summilix three lens system IQ is incredible and yes, it's compelled me to sometimes go out sans a real camera. But does shooting with the phone bring the same photographic joy as shooting with my D-LUX, X-Pro2 or any of my other cameras? For me, the answer is "no", but your mileage may vary. Again, thanks for the nice review.
I have the Huawei P20 Pro as well (dumped my iPhone X ) & am enjoying it....
Still wanting a Leica Q :)
@@NRecob If I could add a non-pocketable compact fixed lens "walk about" camera to my kit with no consideration of budget constraints, it would be the Q. Budget constraints considered, it would be a Fujifilm X100F. However, my D-LUX usually does this job, with focal length diversity, negating the need (but not lust) for a Q or an X100F.
I already have a Sony A6000 so if I get anything new I'm thinking the Q (or possibly a Sony RX1R II)....
Nokia 808 2012 hast better cam than huawei P20 Pro - sensor size matters allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/22923_By_popular_demand_Nokia_808_Pu.php
To all those Vloggers, this is a photography first camera which is inspired by Leica. In short time to come, there will be a Leica version, thus emphasis will be on photography and not so much for Vlogging. Same thing goes with no articulated screen. You definitely won't find it on a Leica M10 or even a Leica .CL
Greet review, but more importantly, are you related to Jeff Goldblum?
Probably the only 'honest' gear review I've seen that is actually honest. Takeout = gear doesn't matter! Loved it.
Will there be a amrk 3 since Panasonic won't make point and shoot anymore right? Byt there is a new sensor on the gh6, if they didn't make a mark 3 with thw new sensor seem like a missing oppotunities isn't it?
That's a good start to the day. Thank you
Love this gent - so relaxed and not hyper!! But still fascinating on photography!
Is it worth buying in 2021
Very minor upgrade to Mark I considering the long time since release. The AF in video looks super slow. Crop is a no go nowadays. No tilt screen and so on. Not worth the money imo. The real competitor of Pana to the RX100 is the LX10/15 not the LX100 which is way bigger. Even with all the influencers pushing Videos out to the LX100II I doubt the sales will be that great.
more influencers = less upgrades necessary
Not to mention, Panasonics lousy track record of support for the LX100, after it was released, never once did they update the firmware. Unacceptable for the kind of money they are asking for this camera. :(
Yeah they just started really updating Firmware with GH5 and G9, lets see if they keep it up but I doubt this aswell since only the top tier models got updates
Luv that lense though....
Not many people appreciates gourmet food, so, it is not surprising that not many people will appreciate a compact photographer-centric camera like the Lumix LX100 Mk2. Most of the updates maybe under the hood but they are significant ones.
I got my LX 100 (not II) back in 2016 I still firmly believe it's the best camera within it's genre so to speak. I was very disappointed in the II upgrade, pointless features for an insane price bump. I've probably gotten five friends to buy the same camera and in my opinion it is, by far, still the best camera. You can get a used model for 250GBP. Nothing can beat that. What would have made me to upgrade would be if they managed to squeeze in an APS-C in there. But then again, actually being able to use f1.7 and not having a too short depth of field and setting the focus right, is a positive for me. So again. All hail the first Lumix LX100
Interesting that you mention smartphones. I had an indoor shoot (using daylight) recently and it dawned on me how close in performance and behaviour dedicated small and crop sensors are in relation to flagship smartphone cameras like the iPhone X, Google Pixel and P20 Pro once full manual settings are engaged.
9VARZ Yes!
I had the LX13 and LX15 but I did not get the LX100 due to no improvment in resulotion. I switch to 2nd Hand Fuji X-Pri 1 and X-T1. I lost the creativity I had with the Panasonics so I may get the next veson on the Panasonic LX100 II. What Improvment do you think they will include in the next version?
No articulating/flip screen... it's a serious flop for me so I'm out.
No flip for 4K hmmm work
@@raygeary1698 En ingles, por favor.
thx. looking at this to replace my lx10, which is a good camera, but I hate having no evf and manual control buttons
Is dust a problem with this lens? Apparently it is a big problem with the Mk I.
Hi, Hugh. It’s going on three years now, but as I see other cameras in this genre emerge, the more and more I love my Fujifilm X70. With its fixed lens, 16 MP APS-C-size sensor, articulating touch screen, beautiful color rendering from the X-Trans sensor, and solid Fuji build quality - it’s hard for me to let it go. The X70 will stay in my gear cabinet along with my X-T2 for a very long time. I love your reviews. Thanks for another good one...
Isn't it wonderful when you find the gear that just works for you? Thanks for sharing!
Best lighting ever.
Mate, I could have read the spec sheet. What's the point of just listing off all of the features?
At 1:57 you said micro 4/3’s but specs say 4’3s not micro what’s the difference?
I am curious as to why they’d add a crop in 4k recording and not add 120 FPS .
pat dinco , yes and I usually touch something on the screen accidentally and have to start over.
The price and no tilt screen. Maybe when it drops to ~500Usd.
Too bad, Panasonic sticks with their video AF. I loved the LX100 M1, but it is nearly unusable for me as a UA-cam videographer (selfie style). I changed to the RX100 V and never looked back.
I understand.
This camera was never meant to be a video camera first. It is designed for photographers first with analog control, much like those who shoot with a Leica M10. So, no flip screen actually make the camera neater.
Which should be self evident to any vlogger as it neither has an articulating screen nor an external microphone jack. Why buy it in the first place?
Contax T2? Or the G series (the 21 and the 45mm lenses are amazing ), Nikon FM3, Fujifilm ga645i (or z if you want the zoom) or a Makina 67 for the ultimate in negative size and a compact body. I know, I know, but why does everything thing have to be about sane and sensible.
For this size/weight and price, why not get the GX9 and slap on any PL lenses for versatility.
I have the GX9 and I still think this is a neater camera for street/travel photography. The most attractive aspect is the fast lens it has. Imagine a 24mm equivalent at f/1.7. That alone make it a very capable camera for low light, interiors of buildings and under the shades.
Great video and great delivery. I’d like to see how manual controls fit into this ever growing premium compact camera market. I don’t need 300 af points, just need one accurate center point I can map to a back focus button for example. Great video!
The LX100 mk2 metal build quality and form factor makes it the best designed most satisfying camera template... Pani should develop the idea... a flip screen version would make it irresistible
Re flipping screen > Not sure is this true or not, but LX100 has no tilting/flipping screen because Leica, apparently, does not like that, and LX100 is rebranded by Leica as their D-Lux. If it were Panasonic's child alone, without Leica's name on the lens, it is possible it would have the tilting/flipping screen.
See I know this one might come a little out of left field but.. is there any chance you'll ever read an audiobook, Hugh? I have to admit that thought's been with me since I saw the first few of your videos a while ago.
Have a good day!
Not left field at all, Jenny - very kind of you. I do voice-over work for our own commercial projects as appropriate, but that’s it thus far. I think it would be fun to do audiobooks, but a I’ve never sought it out. My family and I loved Stephen Fry’s narration of the Harry Potter series - truly wonderful!
Please do give me a ring if one day you do a reading of one of the Pratchett books or something of the like.. or just anything, really - I'd love to toss a few dollars your way over that.
Very much agreed with Stephen Fry's narration, he's a fantastic speaker and great to listen to.
Listen Jeff Goldblum (am I the first to identify how much your elocution reminds of him?) ... I trust that this generation will come to look at iPhones as "real" cameras, but people with as much grey hair as us - well, I think we will know that tiny sensors and lenses without aperture control, and LCD viewfinding (instead of eye-level) will never be a "real" camera. You might very well make "real" photographs with an iPhone, but whether here to stay, or whether fading into the sunset, "real" cameras are tools that simply inspire an experience that - once enjoyed and appreciated - relegates iPhones to social media food pic projects. I swing a G Master on my new A7iii, and as the saying goes - "But when you shoot it, you will know where that money went." - Pulp Fiction (1994)
Shooting experience is why I'd still take a camera with me on vacation outside my phone (and I have a Pixel 2, no slouch). I just very much enjoy the physical controls. I really wanted to like the GR, but I always leaned back to my E-M5 for some reason. I would really like to try the LX100, but ultimately, that price tag is just too much given what I already own.
Linh Nguyen reasonable!
Well, you just saved me "wasting" north of £750.
I have been doing the usual "which compact camera should I buy" internet trawl for a few weeks now - I like to do research - but this video made me reassess what exactly I was looking for.
All of my photography these days is for social media (sad but true) but I always wonder if there is there a better option than my iPhone 13 Pro Max for that medium.
Your closing statement on this video made me sit up in my chair...I already own everything I need for my requirements.
Thanks.
😊🖖🏻
For $500 bucks you get a Panasonic GX85, for little bit more you could get a m4/3 lens from Panasonic or Olympus. Or you can put any lens on with the correct adapter. Just my opinion. I love this channel is always very informative.
MrBillboeing great combo - GX85 was my 2016 camera of the year, and that Leica 15/1.7 is outstanding!
I can not decide between the 15mm or the 25mm Leica for the GX85....My main camera is the old trusty Leica M8 with 40mm f2 Summicron - C lens from the 70's . Cheap Leica option. Sometimes I like to use AF therefore the GX85 :-)
MrBillboeing both Panny/Leica are excellent (we bought the 15/1.7 and the Sigma 30/1.4 instead of the 25/1.4 because of concerns over CA - but I think the Sigma AF performance is not as good).
Thanks for the advise !
I struggle with the same decision - buy a new camera or upgrade my phone. Because I always have my phone with me, it's the camera that I always have in my pocket.
Great video,.... Especially at playback speed 0.5 ;)
the best premium compact camera out there. i ll buy 2 not one. people dont know what they want. they just want all in one. it is not possible. for those who know panasonic LX100ii is the best compact camera out there,. period!
Interesting once again.... I can remember a time really not so long ago when any phone could never compete with any camera ever.
That line is being blurred I sent a couple of photos to my son who is also a photographer. I took a photo of my dog indoors in daylight.
One shot with my Pixel 2 one with my Sony RX100VI I asked him which was which.
He couldn’t tell sad days in some ways?
come on Panasonic time for an updated version.
I keep wanting a high performance p&s, but my iPhone X is good enough for travel.
Foto4Max I understand that, but I don’t even want to carry around my a6500, let alone a full frame a7iii. Whether I am taking pics or not, the phone is always with me. Also easier to do a family selfie without having to add an external monitor.
Was so hoping this lx100ii had ibis.. a compact travel camera that makes taking smooth video easy.. Video is an important part of cameras now, but my 1 year old iphone can take 4k60p stabilized video and my $1000 camera cant? The iphone 11 will launch at the same time as this... Do I really need 3 cameras?
In the technical description it says that it has Power O.I.S.
Marco Hoffmann where does it say that?
www.dpreview.com/news/6724429642/much-anticipated-panasonic-dc-lx100-ii-features-17mp-multi-aspect-sensor the press release notes power OIS. Not body, but lens stabilization.
Linh Nguyen yea its kinda useless like the OIS on the rx100
@@robert7622 hrm, I hadn't heard that before. It's not G9 IS, but still useful.
Hey. Great review. I'm new here....When you said, in 2:37 that there was a bulb mode added, you mention an add on to make the mark i lx100 have a bulb mode? If that is the case, PRAY TELL!!!
Can someone please explain me why 24-70 is The all around zoom range? I know this seems minor but I can’t shake the thought that a 28-75 or if possible 28-80 is much more useful. I rarely see me self in need of something as wide as 24mm. I love the aesthetic of the 28mm thanx to the Leica Q and the iPhone. And 70mm is just a bit too wide for portraiture. Don’t get me wrong it’s not about the bokeh, it’s about the perspective distortion and what it does to what I’m photographing. I’m mostly shooting in between 35mm and 50mm with the occasional 80mm for portraits and close ups. Although I might have to disclaim that this goes almost exclusively for my video work. When I’m taking pictures on the street it’s almost exclusively 50mm on my film camera or 58mm with the iPhones tele photo lens or 28mm with its wide angel lens.
Indeed. 35-105mm lens, or 3x zoom, would be an interesting option in some camera.
I use superzooms as vacation camera's. Wiildlife at a distance is possible and shots that I want to actually print are better than what a phone provides. The Panasonic phone app makes transferring to a phone pretty easy for upload.
Thanks for weighing in!
Agree with Hugh and other posters that it is hard to see the point of this in 2018 (FWIW, my favourite camera of all time is the LUMIX LX3. Using dynamic B&W@400ISO in JPEG there was joy and magic). I barely use my R100IV these days - even for work, although I absolutely would take the A7RIII and a couple of lenses on holiday - my entire camera kit now fits in a Chrome shoulder bag.
Oh Hugh
2024 is happy to find you here, again
Time's been good to you and your skintones, somehow anti-aging
From my matrix, reasons to pick up a LX 100 II, now:
#1 Small size, fast zoom
##
The small, light, wonderful E-M5 II (EVF, flip LCD) with the excellent, small PanaLeica 15mm 1.7 isn't small. To reach further, while fitting in a coat pocket, the only option is the 12-32mm which means losing around 2 stops. To maintain LX100 aperture means getting a 12-35 or 12-40 pro zoom at about the same cost and size (+ the size of a M43 body) or carrying two small primes.
I thought the E-M5 and the E-PL7 were small, they aren't. In practical use they need a bag with space for more of those small (indeed) great primes and then maybe the also great plastic tele or 35-100, a battery and a charger for longer trips. Such a bag will never be small, light perhaps, not small.
#2 L Monochrome D
##
I haven't made the effort to try and match that from RAW (.ORF or .RW2), maybe it's possible but I want it as a SOOC option. It looks fantastic, both for stills and video, and is still around on the new S series AFAIK.
There's a very nice Grainy Film II profile (aka Tri-X-ish recipe with sampled grain) on the E-M5 (and almost any Oly M43 body) that suits some shots, apply personal preference. The Lumix L Monochrome (no D) profile and Dynamic Mono filter (aka recipe) is also good, sometimes great. But I'm charmed by the D and need to try it out, on M43 that means LX100 II, GX9, G95, GH5 onwards. On 1" it's on FZ 1000 II and LX10.

Abruptly abbreviated. Next time. Totally getting the RX100 VII also btw.
Thanks for such a thoughtful contribution!
My LX100 front focused then my GX85 had some issue. Poor quality control in Panasonic Chinese factories.
But you can't compose very well with a telephone...
Now instead of seriously looking at this camera, you have me considering a new iPhone. This went on a tangent.
Is there something wrong with considering a new iPhone instead?
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Not at all! Decisions, decisions. I enjoy your channel, just missed you at photokina. Stay well sir.
Mark Clarivette 😎
So what you want me to do, get it or not?!! :)
or how about an a5100 for half the cost . . . limited bells and whistles . . . great images and fits in your pocket.
Well, there is no mic jack, yet again! So that pretty much automatically kills it as a consideration for a lot of increasingly frustrated people, including myself.
I just want a better than cellphone camera that is nice and compact, but with a mic input so I can do quick and dirty vlog! None of the Sony RX100 have this, was a perfect chance for Panasonic to leap in and steal a niche for themselves! Especially if its screen had also flipped out.
MSRP OF $999 for a couple of small upgrades? gtfoh. I'll keep my lx100. shit I can get two for the price of the mII.
Jorge Martinez Fair enough!
Awesome as usual, thumbs up. Im almost ready to buy a leica q.. but i keep asking myself why do i want one , when there are cheaper alternatives like this or even rx1r2.. but yeah, the leica q is calling my name as im trying to get back into street
Randall Herrera Will be spending more time with a Q myself. Geez, I love how the lens works!
same here (have Q fever)....
No mention of x100f? If i had only 1000 i would buy a used x100f lol
I have the X100f. Good camera but no zoom so cropping. It also generates DARK shadows no matter the settings.
Just sold my LX100 due to dust spots which despite getting it pro cleaned kept re-occurring. Has the mark 2 solved the problem?
There's a cheap well known trick for that issue! Just use a bottle and a vacuum cleaner. Google it or look on youtube. It really works!
@@pierreandre5678 thanks yes I tried that with the Mk1 but it all re-occurred. I now have an RX100 Mk3 as my light carry everywhere camera
yeah, the color i'm use to, to your videos XD
Bachmann Manuel manually set this time - thanks to your input!
you're such a nice and polite person ;-)
You guys rock the truth!!!!

"Lx100 Mark II": the "2" is for '2 Late'...
Yet again, a slap in the face to vloggers, like so many cameras that came before it. No mic jack, no headphone jack, and no articulating screen. Jeepers. It's like nobody wants to make a camera for that market. I just don't get it.
I think this camera is for photographers primarily, not for vloggers. Great for streetphotographers or as ambitiously compact travel camera.
I believe that G85 is more suitable for vlogger and more video oriented, ill be waiting for the G85 ii which might be available soon during the next 2 years.
It's for photographers sorry. And thank God.
Interesting take, I don’t have or want a thousand quid worth of phone, But lovely as this camera is, Pana have to realise that that’s where the completion is, sooner or later (later probably) I will.
Very interesting I am not buying a camera anymore I don't know if I should thank you LOL
Sound better when compared to buying em5ii with 12-40 f2.8 lens
Lumix lx100 ii is nowhere near the Leica Q but it is a Dlux 7 .
What brand are your glasses!🤓

Take your pick : Canon Powershot G9X Mark II, Sony RX100 V, Panasonic LX 100 II or Fujifilm XF10 pocket camera on your next vacation...leave your camera back and accessories behind. Enjoy, leave your SmartPhone camera off. I enjoy your presentations.
Meant camera bag, hold that thought for my future mistakes.
that lighting..
I'm really curious about it, I shot some interviews for work lately, I'd love to use that setup depending on how fast it is
Love the Jeff Goldblum delivery,
Would be a buy for me if it had/has? proper image stabilization. The LX-100 is dreadful for run and gun video. Shaky as hell... I hate one inch sensors so the Sony RX is of no interest to me.
It has image stabilization? check out this lx100 II review. somewhere in the middle there is a IS vs no IS test ua-cam.com/video/-56-vyhHhXE/v-deo.html
"Iphone 10 is a real camera."
Watch the world burn.
Tempting, but i'll stick with my rx100 M3 for this niche in my camera ecosystem since I only want a stills shooter for my daily carry and those rare moments I see something and want to make a pic.
sanjay vijayanathan Fair enough - thanks for weighing in!
So if you are looking for a take-everywhere camera, buy an iphone 10, not the answer I was hoping for.
Starts at 1:45
Well it was the LX100 3years ago that started all my trouble; I saw Lok Cheung's brilliant review on Digital Rev. I was having trouble with my Nikon D7100; I hated it and on holiday I snapped and used my compact instead (hold that thought). So I wanted a high quality compact for travel; no way was a DSLR coming with me again. So I looked at the LX100 and noticed the Leica D-Lux, even patted it in the London Mayfair Leica shop. Then disaster hit over Christmas. I saw Steve Huff's review of the brand new Leica X113 with a stunning 23mm F1.7 Summilux with macro. I bought an X113 and a visoflex unseen and it turned my life upside down. Suddenly there was space and hyper realism in my photos, this was a mix of Hopper and Breugal, I was addicted. The history you know, after 30 years Nikon sold and replaced by Panasonic GX9 and Leica TL2 and X113. Why disaster? I now have about £6000 less in my bank account but i am at least set up now for the next decade. So that earlier thought, what about compacts? I always carry a compact. It started in 1994 I added an Olympus Mju to my Nikon FM2n kit. There really has never been a better point and shoot made; I have dropped one down a mountain and it still survived and it had a bitingly sharp 35mm lens. Then in 2004 I upgraded my Mju to a Mju stylus 200 with 3MP. With hindsight that was when i went mirrorless as i never warmed to my DSLRs when i bought some 4 years ago and I didnt shoot any film in the troubled intervening years as i embraced the end of work. So what else did i buy 4 years ago? I upgraded my Mju 200 to a lovely red and totally indestructable Olympus TG-3 compact. It slips easily in my pocket, needs no special care, always gets the shot even in microscope mode (this camera is amazing). So I am never interested in compacts, I know I will always just buy the latest incarnation of the Olympus Mju (its now up to TG-5 but my 3 is still going strong). The LX100 niche is well covered by my GX9 with 12-32mm lens if i am feeling really lazy. We do live in amazing times ;-)
you remind me of jeff goldblum. that is all.
