I'm still salty that his "Cyberpunk" record didn't took off and that it marked the beginning of the end of his career. It was a messy but brilliant and innovative record at the time and i really would've liked him to continue with his stardom power throughout the 90s. He was such a beloved original that he could've survived the impact of grunge. Come to think of it, he didn't survived that even with a very 90s record, so scratch that theory, lol.

I just did the same with Depeche Mode last month and omg, they did not disappoint! (There’s lots of videos on here from the current tour, but I recommend looking up San Antonio especially; yeah, I was there, but everyone else is saying the same thing in the comments: compared to the audiences in CA, NY, etc, San Antonio had the best audience experience, everyone up dancing and singing along the whole time. Still too many damn cell phones, people too focused on recording the whole thing, not really being present and just enjoying the experience, but less so than in other US cities. European audiences don’t seem to be nearly as bad about that.) I’ll be 48 in 3 days longtime DM Devotee, but somehow never got to see them live til now, and this was the best concert I’ve ever been to, hands down. The energy level in the whole arena was insane! DM are known for their live shows and how well Dave gives such amazing energy as a frontman, really pulls the audience in and up-his energy is infectious. Even at 60-61 yrs old, they’re still absolutely killing it! If you have the opportunity to see them on their current tour, GO!!!

The thing with 80’s sounds, especially the early 80’s, these keyboards were new ideas and sounds. Everyone was being creative with these sounds. Programmed sounds were being used as music. It was a Wild West frontier so to speak. Everything you hear in the 90’s, 00’s, and beyond started with these 80’s pioneers with something new and not knowing what the potentials were yet. As a rock guy most of us didn’t like it even back then, but a few people, like Billy Idol was pretty genius at blending the two genres.

Now please do "White Wedding (Parts I & II)," "Dancing With Myself," "Eyes Without A Face," "Flesh For Fantasy" and his *incredible* cover of "Mony, Mony" originally done by Tommy James and The Shondells in 1965. You will most definitely NOT be disappointed.
Billy is that rare breed: Just commercial enough for the masses, he definitely drew the girls in, but all the rocker dudes respected him. Because of his kick ass guitarist Steve Stevens he even incorporates some Heavy Metal in some of his songs, like this one and "Eyes Without A Face," so the vast majority of the Metal community also loves Billy. He's just an all-around star. Definitely an idol, and in the best ways possible. 🤘🏻

"Eyes Without a Face" is one of his best. "Flesh For Fantasy" is also excellent.

Hell yeah, this song just rules! I am totally with you George. I love this stuff too. You were right on about the laser sounds too. During the guitar solo, Steve Stevens literally shot a toy ray gun into his pickups for that crazy lazer sound.

Billy Idol, Ian Astbury and Michael Hutchence. My favorite 3...ALL have that rare it factor. Absolutely captivating! But 3 performers that need to be seen, not just listened to.

This fifty-something broad loves BI's music, and the musicianship surrounding him. He'll be here in Denver in April - just a heads up, in cases folks are wanting to catch him, check his tour dates.

I really want to go find a live version of this now. Also, back in the Army reserves, the joke was "you're so idle they should call you Billy" so funny that is actually where he got it from.

The term you are looking for is also a genre of Cyberpunk called "Cassette Futurism" - what the future was imagined to be back in the 80's.

You fellas nailed it on the whole commentary. As an 80s teen your comment about the old future was spot on because from the other end of the time capsule the 80s felt like the beginning of the future. It did not feel, look or sound like anything before.

From what I've read, Billy Idol was just out of his former band Generation X and moved to New York to work with Steve Stevens. He was hanging out at all the small underground clubs and came up with an idea to mix in the punk with a dance club sound.....Steve Stevens added the brilliant guitar. Basically Idol wanted to create music that you could dance to but also rock out and be unique. And that shit worked. Huge.
