The McKenzie Chin Tuck, is an essential part of correcting forward head posture and should be integrated into a normal swallow, as part of the meal time exercise ( • The Mealtime Exercise ).
This is a modification by my sister Rosie who was the lead physio for the paraolympics at home (www.sportsinjuryfix.com/busin...)
The harder you make a swallow the more you have to work on it and making a McKenzie chin tuck as you swallow forces the tongue to the roof of the mouth, pushes the teeth together and calms the facial musculature.
Elbows off the table, sit up straight, bring your food up to you (in fact stretch; chin tuck; away from your food), chew like you mean it, busy on the inside and calm on the outside, with no facial muscles making any action. Chew 20 times, then chin tuck and swallow.
Top tip; 1) make your tongue do some work, reaching right up into the gutters between your side teeth and the cheeks or lips. 2) Clench your teeth together as you swallow pushing your tongue up to stop your teeth biting together much (feel that muscles working against each other). 3) Cut you food up before you start, so that you only need one hand to be active 4) and put one hand, palm up in your lap, you can even hold a base ball sized object as a reminder.
Just this and nothing else can revolutionize your swallowing pattern and have a significant impact on the whole CFD train.

There has been some debat that excessive chin tucking can lead to vertebral impingment. Howeer we think it's a terminology issue more than anything. In some ways this is not a classic chin tuck, possibly we should just Rebrand the exercise that we describe, as a Cervical wall extensions done in conjunction with 5 Mewing pulses and a Mewing suction hold."

This actually works. I found out mewing, i started mew, then i read i should fix my forward head posture first. So i started doing this exercise plus mewing for about two months and ive seen result. My head moved back and it looks normal now. I didnt have much forward head posture, but i had. Guys dont give up if you start feel pain on your neck. The neck receives a lot of tension and it is going to Hurt, but that means it works. Hope to start seeing better results with mewing now.. Lets see!

@@stefanj3601 I dont have much progress my friend. Just my neck moved a little bit back. My jawline didnt improved to be honest, or i cant see results due to my cheeks. I lost some weigh and some fat because it was the only thing that improved my facial appearance. Now trying to loose more fat from my face. I mew and do some chisell exercises at the same time, if you know what chisell is. Im 34 so i guess my age plays its role. All i can say so far is that mewing works, but the most important thing is to have a thin face with not much fat percentage in order to see results.

As soon as I did this I felt an immediate "good strech" feeling that really gave some good neck tension relief! Great point at the beginning calling out not flattening your shoulders fully to the wall - I have seen variations of this exercise before and never was told that, and just as you said found they felt like they strained my muscles.

I never noticed how recessive my chin was for like 20 years. I’m disgusted but I’m glad mewing fixed it. It’s crazy I used to have a round flat face & now I have defined facial features which I never had. Tucking my chin also made my chest & collarbones nice. It’s the little things. I practice Ballet and have struggled with getting my back to be straight and elongating the neck as my day job is mostly sitting at a desk for 8+hours a day. Long neck and straight back are not just for the visual aesthetic but help with balance and turns in Ballet. I just tried the McKenzie Chin tuck with the tongue posture and was struck by how similar it is to Ballet posture. Had no idea it was also important for all these other reasons, so definitely will be incorporating this into my daily routine.
Also on a side note, my son had really bad crowding and underbite starting around 8 years old. He had orthodontic treatment including appliances and the extraction of teeth over the course of 10 years and now uses a retainer at night which he hates. All in all cost was around $10K out of pocket, insurance covered about 50% of the costs so not cheap. I always thought it was odd that I never needed any braces, had straight teeth while he needed extensive work though his father did have crooked teeth and an underbite, still I just wonder now how much could have been prevented with this information had I known 20 years ago. I've been trying to find ways to maintain the results of all that orthodontic treatment and I'm thrilled to find this information, so thank you for posting this Dr Mew!

I've dedicated a lot of my time to mewing, posture exercises stretches, and everything that can benefit my overall health and aesthetic appearance, BUT no matter how much exercise and stretching I do, I always end up slouching in my home office and no matter how much I work the back muscles, they always end up loose because of the habit of sitting. Dr mew I have a serious health concern with this method. I have been practicing this for about 3 or 4 days, and I have have been stretching my neck upwards way more than the girl in this video and it's felt sort of weird. Today I was outside in the sunlight and my neck started to tingle, like pins and needles but with a more itching sensation. It also happened in my arms and chest a little bit, but mostly in the neck. Am I practicing this wrong or have you heard of this side affect before?

why do you recommend moving the feet a little away from the wall, is it to reduce the pressure on the lower back lordosis curve?

When doing this exercise I always notice something strange: when I hold the position, if I try to open mouth and then close it ... my lower front tooth bang into upper front teeth, so cannot close correctly ... ( I had upper bicuspid removed ) .... Is it normal to feel this during exercise ?

I’ve been unable to do this exercise since I started wearing a corset.
I either have to settle for a large rib cage (I grew up swimming) or a short neck.

Thanks doc, what’s not clear is you put your butt and head and shoulders on the wall and move your feet slightly forward, how about your lower back? Does it stay flat touching the wall the entire time? I think this would be an important clarification.

This what doctor Bill told me. You have forward head posture and your forehead is tilted back. Both of these are compensations to open your airway to breathe easier. No one thinks about this, but they do it because breathing is easier.

So.. please help explain what happens if someone has forward head posture due to airway issues. And the forward neck actually holds the airway open at this point. Wouldn’t the person need expansion or jaw surgery to open the room for the tongue before they can truly correct the posture?

Thanks Doc. Yes, she just seems very nice. And yes, working on the getting the back 1/3 of the tongue to the roof of my mouth seems to be helping my overall body posture. I made the mistake of doing the tongue to the roof of the mouth with the tip ONLY...and that is not nearly as effective. Getting proper posture with the tongue properly placed while sitting and standing mean a lot. I working on better tongue placement while swallowing as well...as per your videos on the subject. Thank you for all these video...they are very very helpful.

I have a slight overbite. When doing this should I put my teeth in the correct position touching each other, or the natural overbite position? Also will all of this cure my slight overbite.
Secondly when I do this I feel a vibrating in my throats and its hard to breathe and makes a noise. Will this go away over time? Even if I only do this for 6 hours a day because I cannot breathe like this at school.

I have somewhat similar condition, would appreciate your reflection upon it, Doc.
