The McKenzie Chin Tuck, is an essential part of correcting forward head posture and should be integrated into a normal swallow, as part of the meal time exercise ( • The Mealtime Exercise ).
This is a modification by my sister Rosie who was the lead physio for the paraolympics at home (www.sportsinjuryfix.com/busin...)
The harder you make a swallow the more you have to work on it and making a McKenzie chin tuck as you swallow forces the tongue to the roof of the mouth, pushes the teeth together and calms the facial musculature.
Elbows off the table, sit up straight, bring your food up to you (in fact stretch; chin tuck; away from your food), chew like you mean it, busy on the inside and calm on the outside, with no facial muscles making any action. Chew 20 times, then chin tuck and swallow.
Top tip; 1) make your tongue do some work, reaching right up into the gutters between your side teeth and the cheeks or lips. 2) Clench your teeth together as you swallow pushing your tongue up to stop your teeth biting together much (feel that muscles working against each other). 3) Cut you food up before you start, so that you only need one hand to be active 4) and put one hand, palm up in your lap, you can even hold a base ball sized object as a reminder.
Just this and nothing else can revolutionize your swallowing pattern and have a significant impact on the whole CFD train.

There has been some debat that excessive chin tucking can lead to vertebral impingment. Howeer we think it's a terminology issue more than anything. In some ways this is not a classic chin tuck, possibly we should just Rebrand the exercise that we describe, as a Cervical wall extensions done in conjunction with 5 Mewing pulses and a Mewing suction hold."
I have an overbite. Will this help as well as consistently mewing? Also I love all of your videos! They changed my life!

This actually works. I found out mewing, i started mew, then i read i should fix my forward head posture first. So i started doing this exercise plus mewing for about two months and ive seen result. My head moved back and it looks normal now. I didnt have much forward head posture, but i had. Guys dont give up if you start feel pain on your neck. The neck receives a lot of tension and it is going to Hurt, but that means it works. Hope to start seeing better results with mewing now.. Lets see!
Do you have Instagram. May I see your progress?
@@stefanj3601 I dont have much progress my friend. Just my neck moved a little bit back. My jawline didnt improved to be honest, or i cant see results due to my cheeks. I lost some weigh and some fat because it was the only thing that improved my facial appearance. Now trying to loose more fat from my face. I mew and do some chisell exercises at the same time, if you know what chisell is. Im 34 so i guess my age plays its role. All i can say so far is that mewing works, but the most important thing is to have a thin face with not much fat percentage in order to see results.
intersting, but how is that mewing excercise?

the most important part of the video is
"work on it, work on it, work on it, it doesnt come overnight"
The exercise explanation: from 0:47 to 2:27. Do at least one set of 20 reps. (the last 3-5 reps hold position for 5 secs.).
Thank you very much for uploading this videos.

How long should the regular reps be?
Tks for saving my time
Thanks for this clear tutorial Dr. Mike Mew!
As soon as I did this I felt an immediate "good strech" feeling that really gave some good neck tension relief! Great point at the beginning calling out not flattening your shoulders fully to the wall - I have seen variations of this exercise before and never was told that, and just as you said found they felt like they strained my muscles.
That feels good; I just did 1 set of 20 a moment ago. Trying to keep the back and middle and front of my tongue to the roof of my mouth REALLY helps my posture. Adding this exercise can only add to that.
Hi, just wondering if you've kept it up and how it's affected ur posture 7 months on? 😊
Right?! I tried it and was surprised at how pleasant it feels!

I love how real and unpolished that was. It's legit. Been doing chin tucks like this for a while now but never thought to associate and coordinate it with mealtime. What an amazingly simple but profound idea, and a great way to get your head back! This is truly an example of real multitasking, too. Do it while you swallow. Nice tip.
I never noticed how recessive my chin was for like 20 years. I’m disgusted but I’m glad mewing fixed it. It’s crazy I used to have a round flat face & now I have defined facial features which I never had. Tucking my chin also made my chest & collarbones nice. It’s the little things. You basically wanna stand against an invisible wall 24/7
Do you have Instagram can you show me?
It’s amazing. I had a headache for two days. I tried this exercise and now it’s gone

What's the benefit of chin tucks
Excellent explanation.
Fantastic exercise, thank you so much!
I practice Ballet and have struggled with getting my back to be straight and elongating the neck as my day job is mostly sitting at a desk for 8+hours a day. Long neck and straight back are not just for the visual aesthetic but help with balance and turns in Ballet. I just tried the McKenzie Chin tuck with the tongue posture and was struck by how similar it is to Ballet posture. Had no idea it was also important for all these other reasons, so definitely will be incorporating this into my daily routine.
Also on a side note, my son had really bad crowding and underbite starting around 8 years old. He had orthodontic treatment including appliances and the extraction of teeth over the course of 10 years and now uses a retainer at night which he hates. All in all cost was around $10K out of pocket, insurance covered about 50% of the costs so not cheap. I always thought it was odd that I never needed any braces, had straight teeth while he needed extensive work though his father did have crooked teeth and an underbite, still I just wonder now how much could have been prevented with this information had I known 20 years ago. I've been trying to find ways to maintain the results of all that orthodontic treatment and I'm thrilled to find this information, so thank you for posting this Dr Mew!
I just did this for the first time. Although I only did about 10 reps, I can already feel the difference in my posture :O

Hello Dr. Mike Mew! I've been a huge fan of your content and I have watched almost everything on your channel. I've dedicated a lot of my time to mewing, posture exercises stretches, and everything that can benefit my overall health and aesthetic appearance, BUT no matter how much exercise and stretching I do, I always end up slouching in my home office and no matter how much I work the back muscles, they always end up loose because of the habit of sitting. What can you recommend in terms of ergonomics and desk sitting posture?
doing god's work mike, love you
This is so oddly similar to an exercise that I had to do in physical therapy for my neck except I was laying down as I was doing it. Press the head back into the floor as my chin was tucked. Repeat.
I used to just fall asleep while doing it because I had nothing else to do while laying there waiting for sleep anyway.
Thank you!
muy bueno , muchas gracias !

My neck seems to be more stiff from doing this exercise and am worried about developing Military Neck (Cervical Kyphosis). Maybe I am doing it too often or holding it as long as I can is incorrect?
I'm really curious about one thing. Where should the corners of the mouth be places when at rest? Should they touch upper teeth? thanks
I'm from NZ and knew Robin McKenzie. Unfortunately he died about a half decade ago. Was a great man who revolutionized how we view spinal problems.
rky; please tell me more. I am aware of the McKenzie roll, and any information would be a great help. My sister is a physio and she introduced me to the concept. The exercise that I give has been slightly modified by her. I am very keen to give credit to where it is due. Mike
Mike you should check out the work of naudi aguilar at functional patterns. There's no one in the industry correcting body posture like he is right now.
www.mckenzieinstitute.org/ you can find a lot of information about him here or through contacting people through this site. i'm sure you've done it already but you should pick up his books. look on ebay or for a pdf maybe.
Thanks I watched the video, it was fascinating. And so simple. M
RIP
Her right eye seems to be protruding. I had the same issue which was made more obvious when I started mewing. I was able to counter it by chewing more on the side which had the eye deeper in its socket.
what does that do?
Shouldn't it be chewing on the side with the protruding eyes
Great, now you have 2 protruding eyes.👁👁
Excellent! Dr. Mew, is chin tuck posture do I need it too in mewing?
Me and Rosie have a vibe going, I can feel it.
That's not Rosie btw. It's his wife
This is becoming and going to become a major problem for almost everyone because now we are all looking down at our phones and going to create serious neck and posture issues if we're not conscious of it
I have discovered this myself. When I tuck my chin in, my tongue goes up naturally, the lower jaw is free of tension, the corners of the mouth go up, too, without forcing them. I try to keep this posture all the time, when the face is resting.
I think you could have gone to the AMA & sooken to reconstruction surgeons. This is absolutely a miraculous find Byw., loved your Dad in OPEN WIDE. This is revolutionary. Orthopedic practice don’t want to change since 1890 😅
I literally vibrates while doing this exercise
I love her.
Most new cars have headrests that lean slightly forward now such that I have to get my back off the seat back to be able to do a good chin tuck. I’ve been doing these chin tucks maybe a year after doing mewing and am now finding my jawline to attain a squarish profile. Thank you.
Is she your daughter?
If so congrats you must be a very proud father
Thank you very much for all the valuable and useful information that you give us to benefit from it. Can I ask you to ask if it is possible please translate your videos into Arabic
Dr mew I have a serious health concern with this method. I have been practicing this for about 3 or 4 days, and I have have been stretching my neck upwards way more than the girl in this video and it's felt sort of weird. Today I was outside in the sunlight and my neck started to tingle, like pins and needles but with a more itching sensation. It also happened in my arms and chest a little bit, but mostly in the neck. Am I practicing this wrong or have you heard of this side affect before?
hey, did it improved?
Would it help if we sleep face up on a flat surface? Feels kind of the same with this exercise. Thank you.
why do you recommend moving the feet a little away from the wall, is it to reduce the pressure on the lower back lordosis curve?
yes.
anybody else notices that sound every time he swallows in all his videos? anyway THANKS A LOT!!!! FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEGDE DOCTOR!
Yeah, it's kind of gross.
That stare though. I don't know if I'm excited or terrified.😵
"Don't try and get your shoulders against the wall" great. I've been doing that the whole time
Rosie is so beautiful. You are so lucky to have John for a father.
Rosie is his sister, this is his wife (not daughter)
When doing this exercise I always notice something strange: when I hold the position, if I try to open mouth and then close it ... my lower front tooth bang into upper front teeth, so cannot close correctly ... ( I had upper bicuspid removed ) .... Is it normal to feel this during exercise ?
I’ve been unable to do this exercise since I started wearing a corset.
I either have to settle for a large rib cage (I grew up swimming) or a short neck.

@@chegonlee8996y si no es tan complicado por qué no se lo explicas
Dumb question over here: what's that all for? It's just for fixing your posture and maybe your neck\back pain issues or it might ultimately help with jaw line development?
Is it necessary to put the tongue on the palate when I do the flexion?
Thanks doc, what’s not clear is you put your butt and head and shoulders on the wall and move your feet slightly forward, how about your lower back? Does it stay flat touching the wall the entire time? I think this would be an important clarification.
This what doctor Bill told me. You have forward head posture and your forehead is tilted back. Both of these are compensations to open your airway to breathe easier. No one thinks about this, but they do it because breathing is easier.
1:37 WOW! Amazing!
1:40 Mike mew flips off camera lol
lmao
Está en inglés no entiendo 🙉 y vine del vídeo para ver las posturas del cuello 😣
Mike, what do you think of the Alexander technique?
Im doing chin tuck all the time using the back of my tongle to push my head back and upward , im training my body posture too. Am i suposed to use the back of my tongle like this? it feels quite nice.
Are you supposed to keep your lower back against the wall as well? I find that hard to do
are you supposed to have perfect tongue posture while doing this? i cant do any double chins if im engaging the back third of my tongue.
so with this, should I start walking and aiming for my posture to be chin tucked??
So.. please help explain what happens if someone has forward head posture due to airway issues. And the forward neck actually holds the airway open at this point. Wouldn’t the person need expansion or jaw surgery to open the room for the tongue before they can truly correct the posture?
I think the tongue would open the space with force
should the back or spine touch the wall ?
and should the hill of leg touched the wall
Okay so one feet should be slightly ahead of the other? Just a clarification
Is it advisable to then do the opposite movement to compensate, slide head up I mean?
Do we need to this once a day everyday or more?
I didnt understand then it just clicked i did 20 reps an i feel the muscle now!
What does this do to the face?
2:37 How could i able to hear this swallowing sound?
In the beginning too lol
the microphone is in his mouth
can I do this while laying and sleeping?
How should you position your feet again?
she's very pretty 😊
She is gorgeous!
The woman in the video is absolutely stunning looking. She's just beautiful. Doc, you should bring her on more often. Thanks.
Thanks Doc. Yes, she just seems very nice. And yes, working on the getting the back 1/3 of the tongue to the roof of my mouth seems to be helping my overall body posture. I made the mistake of doing the tongue to the roof of the mouth with the tip ONLY...and that is not nearly as effective. Getting proper posture with the tongue properly placed while sitting and standing mean a lot. I working on better tongue placement while swallowing as well...as per your videos on the subject. Thank you for all these video...they are very very helpful.
B vh Right? Seems pretty average to me
Where are you from?
Thirsty bro?
Fuck I hate thirsty internet loverboys.
should I raise the sticky point on my occipital bone or the part of my head that hits the wall ?
I have a slight overbite. When doing this should I put my teeth in the correct position touching each other, or the natural overbite position? Also will all of this cure my slight overbite.
Secondly when I do this I feel a vibrating in my throats and its hard to breathe and makes a noise. Will this go away over time? Even if I only do this for 6 hours a day because I cannot breathe like this at school.
yes, I'm confused about the teeth position part as well.
Hey bro do you feel it in the back of your neck or nah?
J 21 Keep your normal overbite position, a slight over bite is natural, other wise you can't close your teeth lol
Do you need to keep your teeth together as you do this?
Doctor Mew, can orthotropics fix the kind of asymmetry that the lady in the video has, one eye lower than the other, ie?
I have somewhat similar condition, would appreciate your reflection upon it, Doc.
Thank you so much for all you are doing, you're a great and noble man.
